This has been working for me too, can confirm. The forums say it isn't possible.
although i would add that i dry the grains over a fan on low for about 10 minutes, i've had bad luck with overhydrating if i just let it sit to dry off.
also i sterilize for 2.5-3 hours, but otherwise we use the same tek :)
@@SilentKiller672 how much water do u add to the pot for that long?
@@MadameCasper Water level is generally up to the metal wire spacer. You wouldn't want the boiling water to knock over your jars! don't forget to unscrew the lids a bit too
@@MadameCasper steam doesnt escape on instant pots since its fully automated and electric you dont need to add extra water he explained that in the video as well
Great video I followed along it came out great. I currently have two tubs going!
I've used my Instant Pot for years for everything mycology, from agar to dehydration, and everything in between, so it is good to see you sharing this tek. A couple tips. No need to punch lids to ventilate. Since there is little moisture in the kernels, a very limited amount of pressure will build up. If you are concerned, you can just cover tightly with foil, no lids, and then add the lids after you LET THE POT COOL COMPLETELEY. Also, if you are in the US, you are seeing lots of high strength bags for food products. From granola to salt, these high strength, ziplock bags are all the rage in food packaging and a great upcycle option. You can use these bags for everything from grain prep to agar plate wrappers and tool bags...you just need to experiment a bit.
Nice video!
I really appreciate the use of broke boi jars.
I've been waiting for a video about this! I saw your Instant Pot agar video a few weeks ago. Last week I bought a 6 qt Duo at Goodwill for $12, lol. I'll be putting it to use soon. Thanks for the Instant Pot videos.
I used this for my popcorn an agar with no problems. I'll co sign lol
Thanks for reuploading this!! I frequent this video often !
If you don’t have or want to use a lid you can also just use aluminum foil. Just poke some small holes in it with cover it with micropore tape. Then you can just knock it up that way when done!
Use my 6qt insta all time, works perfect for sterilizing
I had good luck last year just using broke boi canning method but after several successful batches started getting contam. Got an Instant Pot for my B-day and might give this a try. I still have a spore syringe in the fridge.
I use my instapot for millet and it works great!! I soak for 18 hrs approx and then boil until they swell to the max. Not an intense boil!! Scoop out of the pot with screen and already as thinkly and as quickly as possible. Let steam off until dry to the touch. Jar up with gypsum and erythritol and pc in the insta pot for 90 mins
Hi, I've been looking for a method for millet in an electric PC. Thank you!! to clarify, You add gypsum to the dry millet?
You're my hero Helios! This method worked out great for me :)
Been doing this since you posted. 100% success rate
Incredible camera work and effort, thanks man!
I do all my grain spawn (in jars)in the instapot. Much better than the old PC. I can only do 4 1qt jars so I have to do a couple rounds to get 8-10 jars depending on how many mono tubs I’m running at the time. Love the instapot!
What kind of grains you using? have you tried WBS? and if so, what are your settings?
@@chrisbellson7164I use rye berry grains atm. Did whole corn for a bit but I feel the rye berry colonizes faster. For the instapot I use the high pressure, keep warm function off and a time of 60min. I let the pressure naturally come out vs hitting the red button. Never had a contamination but everything I do is done in a SAB.
What size is your Insta pot?
@@iamthewelcher8qt. It’s the largest one available.
I love this tek, popcorn might be more expensive compared to WBS, but at least there’s less of a chance of fermenting your grains.
I also use an instant pot with really good results
I have never grown any mushrooms and the back to roots kits always let me down but I live in florida and always bought them from home depot and always get like really dead mycelium maybe it's to hot here the way they store thwm...anyway did this method and cloned my first black pearl mushroom from the store and now have three our of three jars full of mycelium ready to fruit.....it works perfectly
Thank you so much for making this video!!🌟
I’ve tried this tek and it worked perfectly
The inoculation video is missing/private. How do I inoculate?
Worked perfectly, Thank you sooo much!
Great job, show em how it's done. My personal preference for yellow popcorn is 2:15hrs.
Nicely done video. One minor comment, when you’re drilling that hole in the lid it looks like it’s a lot bigger than a quarter of an inch.
Great vid…to the point, no waffle. I use ninja foodi. Same principle, with good results. I’m not prepared to sell a kidney so I can afford a 15psi canner😂
Thanks alot for your help.
Very Nice videos
The beat is sick. Is that you?
Good results 👍 this can work
Did six jars, but I actually sterilized them in the oven and so far there is no contamination. They are almost ready to come out just in 2 weeks 🎉🎉
How did you sterilize in the oven?
@@chrisbellson7164 I used a pressure cooker, but there is a way to do it with the oven
@@chrisbellson7164 a video by mush culture called “how to make popcorn spawn” would be the best video to watch. Got good amount of jars that survived
Love your channel thanks for the info.
I need to learn how to do this with millet.
Can i use without trivet?
do you think i could use the medallion of the ball jar lid upside down, and not tighten it all the way instead of drilling a hole and taping it to allow air exchange during sterilization?
You would be correct. It’s a matter of preference. Assuming the lid is on at least a fraction of a turn, you can put aluminum foil over it to secure it even more and keep out condensation.
Thank you for such an informative video! Can’t tell you how helpful it is. Have you had success with other grains besides popcorn in the instant pot?
Hi, I tried oats and had a huge fail rate. Popcorn has been the most consistent for me.
Helios' Mushroomery What time for the oats ? Only 20min as well ? Sterilisation is a time at temperature equation, so given your at a lower temp (due to lower psi) you need a longer time, as total time = penetration time + hold time (15min @ 15psi) , penetration time is much longer for oats than popcorn.
@@heliosmushroomery9264 I'm wondering the same thing with rye berries. Should you do 20 minutes for this grain?
Hello, can you pls experiment your instant pot with rice ? Pls this we’ll help me so much, having to also be able to use rice as well !
What’s the gypsum for? Can I not use it?
What size is the pressure cooker in the video? Great content btw ✌🏻
are the lids of the jars completely tight or backed off?
i tried this exactly and almost all the kernels are burst and overhydrated, worked way better when i did 20min then vent and remove right away
Dude: "Drill .25" hole."
*drills .5" hole*
The gypsum is for?
Anybody... Know how many qts jars fit into the 10qt Insta pot?
Awesome thank you.
Cam you use popcorn to spawn every kinda mushroom?
Think this would work with Drippy Corn Tek? I.e. adding corn syrup to hydration period? Thanks for this great video.
It works in instant pot. I’m not sure with theirs but probably so. When I do corn I cook it for like 2.5hrs because of lower psi
Nice!!
Part2?
Helios how long does the popcorn stay good for? It's cold and my jars are taking longer than I expected!
needs to be 73 degrees at all times
is gypsum a necessity?
Your second video is private. Any chance you could share that with me?
bless!
I get my from an online store his got shroom, psychedelic and microdosing products well refined also ships to anywhere discreetly, can also guide you on anything......
His on Instagrams, with also telegrams with,,......
*Mycopete%......
Should there be moist inside after sterilizing
how long do the spawn jars last?
what about millet? does it go with the same protocol as popcorn?
Thanks for this. Do you have to close the little black venting knob once it's up to pressure or is it automatic? I'm just a bit confused because one video said to do that but nobody else has mentioned it
Thanks a ton. Pt is set to private...by design? Thx
Can your reuse jars ? Also how do u sterilize with pressure cooker?
If I use rye berries instead of popcorn would 20 minutes be too long or is that time adequate?
The million dollar question...
isn't 15psi just a little above 1 atmosphere ?
how come the instant pot can do only 12 psi ?
1 psi is 1 pound per square inch HIGHER than atmospheric pressure, it doesn’t necessarily mean 1 psi. We aren’t cooking in a vacuum or in space, so 12 psi is 12 psi higher than the air you breathe.
@@danchan7116 thanks, I figured it out since then :)
do you get left over residue from the gypsum? i had some residue not sure if it was gypsum or from the popcorn
can you hydrate WBS in this way?
after you sterilize grain jars do you have to use them right away or can you let them sit for like 2 days?
Hi Nate, you can let the sterilized jars sit for a few days for sure. I've waited for up to ten days before use and it has worked just fine.
@@heliosmushroomery9264 awesome thanks for your response
🥲can't open the inoculation link 😔
Im having trouble with moisture in the grain jars after the 1.5 hour sterilization and leaving overnight. Any ideas or help as to why? Thanks
I know it's 1 month later but but anyway
The next day when you some moisture I just shook mine up a bit and rolled it around then left it for a few hours and rolled it again. This allowed the grain to absorb the moisture evenly. (I think if you have water sitting at the bottom you might not dried long enough, a little bit should be fine to get the grains to absorb though)
Do you ever inoculate corn with MSS? I have been having problems getting colonizing from mss to corn
Personally, best practices, I wouldn’t inoculate straight to grain. But if you’re going to do it, I would use a smaller grain like millet or rye. MSS seem to do better with having less space in between individual grains. Temps must also be on point. I’ve had issues with longer colonization times with MSS on corn.
@@heliosmushroomery9264 what do you think about LC to grain?
@@idubbzimfake5276 LC to grain is fine since it is already established mycelium
does th popcorn have to be completely dry before putting in the jars? or is moisture okay?
Hi Aaron - Some moisture is totally okay. Pooling of water is what needs to be avoided.
I let the steam/pressure out manually right after hydrating the popcorn. Does it matter if I do this?
Nope. That’s perfectly fine. I personally don’t do it because it stinks up the house and the liquid gets all over the walls. But, functionally, it’s fine. Take care!
I thought mushrooms grow in the wild on logs. Why do they need sterilization?
This is a joke, right?
Yes, most plants and fungi grow "in the wild" but when you cultivate them, like cannabis, it's often brought indoors. Easier to control the environment needed for mycelial fruiting bodies!
And sterilization is necessary because you would be trying to grow a specific type of mushroom, if you get to that point, and you don't want other lifeforms competing for nutrients in your grow.
most if not all these pressure cookers are 10 PSI.. almost every video i watched a 15 PSI is recommended.
Your gas exchange holes are WAY to big.
What is this instant pot? Duo or Duo Nova?
Why let it decompress that slow??
Where do you get that Micro-pore tape, and what is it called? Thanks and great video :-)
Its actually just 3m paper tape like medical tape it says micropore inside the role but generic medical paper taoe works well too
Pharmacy
the reason its so confusing is because the term "micropore" is trademarked by a company so others cant call it that and have to go with paper tape usually
did you find out the popcorn grows green mold too?
Nope. Did you find out that food grade popcorn is cleaner so pressure isn't even necessary? Or that coffee is the trich culprit? 🤣🤡
@@peppersanches412 where you been? this is like 8months ago, hahah i gave up on growing mushrooms, to much mold around my home
Can this be done with those spawn bags?
Hi - Most definitely. Bigger bags will require more time to sterilize.
what size jars fit in the instant pot ??
4 pint jars per batch.
Can you do this with a ninja foodi
Hi, I have never used a ninja. However, if it reaches 12 psi, it should work just fine.
my popcorn came out of the pot soggy, what can I do?
What popcorn did you use?
@@johnbs199 I used Redenbacher's. The moisture eventually went away after a few hours. Inoculated them last night. Will have to wait and see. My Bens tek bags are doing great!
@@Mike-mp1hk how are they?

What size pot is that
Hi - It’s a six quart instant pot
doesnt the pore tape fall off with the moisture in the cooker?
Why use music rather than just say what ur doing?
Pint or quart ?
both can work just less or more corn and depending on insta pot size
Pints, most instant pots aren't big enough for quarts, sadly.
use pint. quart jars couldn't fit in my instant pot.
@@brocmt in my viva i managed to fit a quart and 2 pint jars, gotta really play with it for it to fit though
And if this doesn't work, nail polish remover.
Can't get past the cheesy music. sorry!
I noticed you dont make an injection hole for the lids, do you do grain to grain jar transfer??
cant wait to try. My fam has an instant pot but no pressure cooker. Have you ever tried the smaller grain white popcorn? it has more surface area technically but I wonder if that messes up measurements
I use the small popcorn I actually think its better than the normal and it doesn't need to soak as long
An insta pot is a pressure cooker
