this is a traditional song composed for the resistance during the World War II. It talks about a partisan that is going to defend his country from the invaders, so he asks the woman he loves "If I die as a partisan bury me in the mountain under the shadow of a flower". So, he says, everyone that will see the flower will say "What a beautiful flower". Add so that will be the flower of the partisan died for the freedom.
I don't know if you can understand how we feel, but this songs talks about a civil war in which guys has been kill by young people of their same age to defend their family and their country, so it makes me cry every time...
