"Bella Ciao" - Italian Anti-Fascist Song (Rare Version)

- "Bella Ciao" (Goodbye, Beautiful) is an Italian workers' song that gained popularity during the Italian Civil War when it was sung by the Anti-Fascist partisans in the Committee for National Liberation (Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale, CLN). It was first written in the late 1800s and sung by striking farmers in Northern Italy, but when the CLN used it, they modified to lyrics to talk about the anti-fascist partisans who resisted Mussolinite and Hitlerite fascism. These days it is one of the most popular anti-fascist songs of all time, if not the most popular. Performed here by my favourite choir, the Trieste Partisan Choir (Tržaški partizanski pevski zbor / Coro partigiano Triestino)
Stamattina mi sono alzato,
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao!
Stamattina mi sono alzato
E ho trovato l'invasor.
O partigiano portami via
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao!
Partigiano portami via
Che mi sento di morir.
E se io muoio da partigiano
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao!
Se io muoio da partigiano
Tu mi devi seppellir.
E seppellire lassù in montagna,
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao!
Seppellire lassù in montagna
Sotto l'ombra di un bel fior.
E le genti che passeranno
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao!
E le genti che passeranno
Ti diranno o che bel fior.
È questo il fiore del partigiano
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao!
È questo il fiore del partigiano
Morto per la libertà.
Ed era rossa la sua bandiera,
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao!
Era rossa la sua bandiera,
La bandiera del lavor! - Hudba

lmfao bet they’d cut that last verse out if it was being sung in america, i would’ve never expected this song to hint at socialist ideals, much respect to italy and it’s fight against fascism
And it sounded like communist in last verse
Last verse is not commonly understood to be part of the song.
Partisans in italy weren't exclusively left wing, but rather a very small minority from across the political spectrum.
@@DavidPedratscher communism among partisans was by no means a "very small minority" communism in Italy at this time was very strong, and for a couple of decades had been mainstream.
@@ekamandalaputra5517 bacuse it was brother, whats wrong with wanting to distribute the fruits of ones labor amongst the populists?
@@noah4822 it's not wrong if all farmers and labor are treated equally. The only problem is when it's cause another civiĺ war
Actually, the verse 'che mi sento di morir' can be interpreted in two ways: the first one is as 'because I feel death approaching', as it was translated here; but the second one is 'because I feel ready to die (for the partisans' cause)'. The wording of the verse and the use of the preposition 'di' point more toward the second meaning actually, but Italian allows for a lot of linguistic freedom in verses/poetry, so both options are on the table.
The correct translation would be "Because I feel like (dying / I am about to die)" rather than "feeling death approaching". But you are correct on the double interpretation. It hints at both the dramatism of grief ("I feel like I'm about to die (of indignation) from having my homeland taken away from me"), and as a commitment to the anti-fascist cause ("Today I feel like I could die for my homeland/ideals")
Italians use these dramatic expressions very often, like "I felt death creeping up behind my back" when you feel shivers (as my nonno used to say), or "you're going to kill me from embarassment/disgust/etc", but since "di" is used, that is correct, it also indicates willingness towards sacrifice.
Tipo "che mi sento di [dover] morire". Secondo me è come ho scritto.
Thanks for explaining that so clearly. I love this song and I've wondered about that verse for a long time.
Its correct. As and italian i tell you its the second meaning

This song wasnt even made to be antifascist, infact it was made in the 60s never even sung by partisans. So much for your antifascist fantasy about italian history because we can even see that fascism had support after the war and up to today. But we arent allowed in politics, because you need authoritarianism to combat authoritarianism and then you need to describe authoritarianism so now they ban the left or they ban the right because they are by the opposing side as "authoritarian".
