Bok nam deserved better.
Abused and abandoned by all around her, even her last hope, her friend.
She even defended her when she was about to get raped, even though she know her friend abandoned her. Really depressing story.
except from the prostitute who try to help her.
@@rookswoodsrok3614 arent she allowed her brother in law to rape her ?
Friend? She was barely her friend tbh. She literally only had herself and her baby.
Her friend should have died, i hate her from the beginning
Hae-Wan: worst girl
Bok-Nam and Jennifer Hills: best girls
It's the truth and you should say it
Hae-wan is atleast realistic, just a person done with life who doesn't want to do shit. Bok- nam and Jennifer hills are what teenage girls think they look like.
@@luv83 Hae-Wan is realistic, but a majority of teen girls aren't raped and abused daily like Bok-Nam was. Is it unrealistic for her to go on a killing spree? Yes, but teen girls don't just get raped and kill a whole fucking island.

The trashed letters from Bok-nam asking for help broke my heart. She had no one on her side on that island. Poor girl.
Me too! Break my heart!
Yep, Bok-Nam and her daughter could’ve had been saved but if Haewon wasn’t up her ass and was decent enough to help her own friend out. Seeing that letter broke my heart and made me feel numb/empty for awhile
The scene at the bank got me thinking this was gonna be Korean "Drag me to hell".
Holy shit was gonna post that too. Didnt expect such a good storyline.
I was thinking the same thing
Same lmao
Right ?
Me too....not the movement...lol
The reason Haewon's cold nature hits so close to home, is because we all have met people like her. People who turn a blind eye on all the suffering and pain they see and won't lift a finger until it all catches up with them.
It really speaks to how fantastic the writing in this movie is. I imagine if I was Korean I would get more out of the cultural aspects of the movie, but even so, the character writing is so well done! Honestly, we all have some of Hae-Won's nature in us to varying degrees. When you see so much suffering around you, like how many people who live in areas of high homelessness and poverty do, there comes a limit in how much you can care. Emotional fatigue, I guess.
@@chucklebutt4470 I have to agree. Same applies to news. Constantly seeing bad news about the suffering of other people makes us numb.
@@chucklebutt4470 Desensitized. I almost rode by a dude hitting his girl until I remembered this damn movie and turned around. All I had to do was flash my lights and he ran off. I was too afraid to get out of my car though. There was a guy in my state, Delaware, who intervened when a loser was harassing a woman and the loser turned on him and stabbed him to death. His death rocked the community. Dozens of people stood by and watched while he fought for his life. Even though he died alone in a crowd of people, he died a hero.
Soulless beings. It genuinely seems that these people don't have souls, and are npc like.
yeah, there was this bar manager in brooklyn or manhattan who was being stabbed to death and neighbors heard her scream but did nothing, not even call the police while they're inside their apartments, away from being seen by the perpetrator, something plays into the public's psyche that indifference sets in, that you can't exactly pinpoint...
"She has a witness. Hae-won."
So, basically, no witness.
The prostitute was a real one tbh, the only one who actually cared and tried to help. Also Bok-nam is so beautiful and good and deserved better :(
She probably dead though
Ikr. That’s why we shouldn’t judge most of the prostitute.
that scene of the daughter getting felt up was...really gag inducing
As the oldest of 4, and one of my siblings is a 14 year old girl and I don't even know what I would do if someone did something like that to her or any of them.
I feel bad for the kid who had to act in that scene, way too uncomfortable.
I was so incredibly disgusted! Couldn’t even look at it :(
@@alman8908 Still gross tbh
A Dog not for me tbh.
The reason Hae Wan is so hard to tolerate is because she's unreasonably apathetic. It wouldn't have cost anything to point out those things or help Bok-Nam, but she just chooses not to for seemingly no reason.
Sadly there are a lot of people out there who are just like Hae Wan who choose not to do the right thing because they think it's not their problem or don't want any trouble. When you look at for instance spousal violence & child abuse, in many of these cases people in the victim's life knew that abuse and violence were going on, but would do nothing because they don't want to interfere with someone else's family. A famous case was Kitty Guenivive who was stabbed to death despite dozens of witnesses from the apartments above, no one called the cops or tried to assist the young woman, she died in the street from the injuries HOURS after the attack. This stuff happens all the time because people are more concerned by their own safety and well being than that of a stranger.
A personal example was my own grandmother, we had some neighbors where the mother and maybe the daughter were being beaten by the husband/father. My grandmother knew, and instead of calling the cops, or offering support, she just ignored it and forbid me from going over to play. Had I been older & more brave I would had called out my grandma on her shit and called the police myself.
@@opheliacox3996 sadly that case is of the extreme. 99% couple argument is just an argument. you called police when the husband slap, the wife bail out the husband and become his witness, he get out of arrest, go to your house and demand bail money. either way you are fucked. even worse they sue you.
i think she afraid those people would hurt her
@@kittykat5980 nah, she's a bad person
legitimate points but legitimate counter point: people have been harmed and outright killed for trying to help others. And you'll never know how far people are willing to go to retaliate against those who interfere in their abuse. You don't need to risk your life in order to help someone nor should you. When the worst thing that can happen is that you get killed for helping someone esspecially when violence is involved, helping others isn't worth it. Not if it costs you your life. Which you cant really know whether it will end up that way or not. Thats a job for the police, and sometimes not even then when calling the police on someone else's behalf causes trouble for yourself, even tho that should never happen and you have nothing to do with the other person's situation, but that has happened too.
Depending on who you are helping others is a dammed if you do damned if you dont situation. And if someone has reason to believe helping someone else is going to get themselves into trouble one way or another, I dont blame them for not acting, as shitty as the situation is for everyone involved.
honestly? I love the sex worker character. she tried. she really did. 😢

she started the letters with to my beloved hae wan, my sad ass can't take this
Hae-won, I hate to say, is the exemplification of a large portion of various societies. Complacent, selfish, prideful, angry, power in the guise of cowardice, etc. Kim Bok-nam is the courageous underdog, uprising to take a stand for what feels, or may be “right.” In the end, her death left its own legacy to humanity itself: Acceptance & forgiveness.
What I hear also from you Spooky, is you appreciate loyalty in someone’s character. Hae-won definitely lacked in that department. I think you may have enjoyed this film? Another great breakdown! Thank you 🙏
To summarize: Hae-won represents how people from Asia are.
@@mmatatimaphoto766 Hae-won represents the bad ignorant elites that are really just cowards to stand up against injustice when looked in the face. Bok-Nam is that simple girl who would take some shit in humility but would also stand for herself when shit hits the fan.

I've never rooted for a killer so hard in my entire movie-viewing experience. I really wish Hae-Wan ended up dead or at least that Bok-Nam got to live a semi-happy life (happy aside from the guilt of being a killer) on the mainland after her horrible life.
Theres a lot of beauty standards here. Bok-Nam looks almost "clown like" when she arrives in Seoul because 1. shes using the makeup that was given to her daughter 2. She is wearing much lighter foundation. This is because by common Korean beauty standards, which is paler skin and perfect features are ideal (Bok-Nam naturally has thicker eyebrows and darker skin compared to Hae-Wan) 3. Bok-Nams makeup isnt flattering to her as it is likely one of the first times she's using products. Due to her ignorance this makeup acts as a mask.
I liked that commentary on that aspect of korean femininity and how Bok-Nam is gorgeous and strong and wonderful, but by shallow standards, thinks shes ugly.
I like that Hae Won is the personification of "the bystander", and that she changes at the end of the movie.
RIP to the homegirl Bok-Nam, though.
Jennifer Hills and Bok-nam would probably get along really well.
of all the disturbing breakdowns you've done, this one was actually a good movie. Too many disturbing movies just devolve into faux snuff, but this one had some substance to it. I was on the edge of my seat constantly hoping that Hae-won would have had a profound character development moment and help her friend out, but when it was revealed that she witnessed the daughter's murder, I realized her issues were much deeper.
it's sad when someone who doesn't even know her is more caring then her friend who she's known since she was little
I just finished watching this movie and I cried so hard... Bok-Nam was such a sweetheart and deserved the best. She even spared the old man’s life. I wish she could’ve finished off Hae-won. That girl is the worst “friend” alive.

while bok-nam might be a psycho, she’s such an understandable, sympathetic, and layered character, she’s been through so much serious trauma so it’s really understandable, her character arc was one of the best character arc’s i’ve seen, she definitely deserved better and if it wasn’t for the other character’s selfish actions she could’ve escaped a while ago.
15:26 the way Bok-nam hit her head against that wall out of sheer mental anguish really hit me hard. I genuinely felt her pain. That was literally a mind fuck from hell by Hey-wan.
Also, Lady Vengeance has entered the chat because there’s no way she would’ve let any of this ride
Basically what I watched what the movie is :
Main character : goes through watching what was going on does nothing to help or feel sorry to save her friend.
Friend dies at the end.
Main character: 😭 my friend I will change for you in memory.
End.
@Honin Akecheta true, like that be a moral of the story as a way to get her to ask why are you like this and she reveals the reason. Still confused me why having a bystander effect make someone become heartless. Seriously her friend lost her kid and has no one to care.
Cut to 6 weeks later: she's back to being a bitch
Right like if seeing a lil girl get killed doesn't make her want to change I dont think anything realistically would
I'll never get used to scenes where parents realize they lost their child/children. Especially, for people in situations such as Bok-nam's.
as upsetting as bok-nam dying at the end was, i guess you could try to think of it as her finally being able to reunite with her daughter after avenging both of them

Woman that are able to leave abusing relationships are always great to see. As a child, my father was very abusive but my mom left him when i was in 5th grade. That didn’t stop the abuse but it did help
Hae-wan's cold and non-caring behaviour is only shocking to us because it's in a movie main character. But this EXACTLY how we public are in real life. The silently watching public who turns a blind eye to all the wrong and crime happening around us. People don't care until it's happening to them. It's like showing us a mirror, and self-realization is the most uncomfortable shit.
This is one of the most frustrating ones!! What was hae-won's purpose at all in this movie?
flora & fauna Maybe she’s a commentary on how most people in the cities act like Hae-won.
I think she’s supposed to represent the ‘bystander’
Monroville Not in the Cities. Like have you never been a bystander your whole life?🤷♀️ ... think of the little things and not just those messed up things like in this movie
She represented not just society as a whole, but also us as the viewers. Perhaps this is why we hate her so much, because she is the most similar to us. Most of us watching the film are not the heroes or villains of the world's various horrors and storylines, we are instead the oblivious bystanders even when we don't mean to be. It's easy for us to blame Hae-Won when we watch this film, and for good reason, but ask ourselves, 'what have we actually done to make the world better?' Just like Hae-Won we simply live our lives in society without actually making any sort of change in the world. We drop a few likes on a post, maybe donate a few bucks to a good cause, but in the end we are simply idle bystanders to the horrors that others must endure.
Well, that's my two cents anyways.
Bystanders allow the world to fall apart more instead of growing a pair and doing something, all the evidence is there but if you're that weak to stand up and say something you're not a human of society and unit, you're just wasted space of being a decent person, thank you.

The big difference between Haewon and the villains in those other movies is Haewon isn't some embodiment of evil. We've all known a person like her, and that is what makes her so... hateable
This shit would’ve won an Oscar like Parasite if it was made today
In the words of kakashi sensei, “those who abandon their friends are worse than scum”
I put up the ultimate middle finger to Hae-won. How could she stand there and witness all the bullshit that happened to Bok-nam, and then try to escape without even saying goodbye. She witnessed a little girl die, and then was buddy-buddy with the person who killed her. Then had the nerve to look shocked when she saw Bok-nam kill the person who was supposed to get her out of there. When she survived, I wept for Bok-nam, because people like her always get away and never feel the consequences of their actions.

Glad you’re keeping it up while being so busy!
This is such an excellent break-down of this movie!! I did a thesis essay on this film in university and had to watch this movie soo many times to get the details right. This was a great mini commentary of all of the main points of this story and you really articulated the plight of Bok-Nam so well. I do not like "Rape & Revenge" sub-genre of movies because it can often feel cheap and exploitative-- but what sets this movie a part is the complicity of the women's actions in the film, making the revenge have way more depth. You're awesome!!!

People like HaeWan should just not exist. Imagine losing your child, murdered. And your best friend is trying to do everything in their power to get away from you. So they don't have to "deal" with you and your problems. That is just..so terrible it's absurd. HaeWan will never help anyone, always be selfish, and hurt any who try to get closer to her or will hurt anyone that is close with her. That's just top tier humanity right there. And It's rare for them to change. Selfishness to HaeWans degree is sickening.

The only good and likable character in this movie other than bok-nam and her daughter is the prostitute. She atleast tried to help! And she was so sweet.
Imagine sitting back and writing the screenplay for this. I’m sure, as a writer, you pull from some part of your life. I would hate to imagine what part of this and what characters are pulled from this writers past.
I’ve been in a similar situation as Bok-Nam. I was living with my ex & his family when we were together. All the men (his father, brother, and himself) were abusive to the mom (nothing physical that I’ve seen). My was ex abusive to me in every way but sexual and they all knew it. Only his mom tried to stop him, mostly by discouraging it. I think she was afraid of him too. I also think she was brain washed cause she urged me to pamper my ex and take care of him, that things would get better and he would be happy. But why should I be a slave AND treated like shit?
I had finally gotten out of my situation with him but I know his mom still wishes we stayed together, though I suspect she just wanted to keep me around. I feel bad that she’s still stuck in that situation with them.

I feel every character of this movie was top notch and extremely believable. So when things went crazy it delivered. Love this movie
One of the reasons I love Spooky is hearing him uplift characters like Jennifer Hills and Bok-nam. The way he speaks about them in a way that I don't hear many male reviewers speak always warms my heart.
Also, the prostitute was so kind to offer to help Bok-nam escape the island. It makes me wish their plan had worked.
I knew the daughter was going to die... This movie is... Powerful
This was actually a pretty good story line
I love this movie for its two main characters reactions to stress and grief and how their coping mechanisms aren't working at all. Hae-won distances her emotional bonds, detaching emotionally from her work mates, customers and her friends since she believes she won't feel bad if she isn't emotionally there, this comes off as her being an apathetic asshole. Bok-nam bottles up her stress, putting aside her bad feelings to instead look after her daughter, this allows her to continue loving her daughter, but the bottle of emotions explodes eventually.
I give you props for staying sane while living your actual life next to these youtube vids. Editing these videos with the scripts ( not to even mention the rendering ) and studying, i couldn’t do that. Instead I watch these video at night when I’m not able to sleep. Much love from the netherlands ✨
this movie kind of hits close to home because i have been in a less extreme but similar position as Bok-Nam. i was able to leave much easier than she was. the way the movie shows how Hae-wan was so willing to trample on her friendship for little to nothing is also unfortunately relatable. i really like how the movie shows everyone looking kind of shocked when Hae-Wan lies about not seeing anything. she had chance after chance after chance to help her friend but chose to side with the people abusing her. i think more than anything it's just sad that people like that really do exist.
Hae-Won is likely insufferable because unlike the other characters listed is she had multiple opportunities to help and chose to cower in the corner instead. She is what that quote about what evil needs to succeed is referring to, even if all she can do is call the cops at least that's something.
Saying nothing in the face of evil is the same as helping the evil. If she just spoke up or took action she could’ve saved so many lives.
She's way worse than any villain on the island besides the husband and rapist and his other brother. Like I really don't know why the movie just acts like she is a hero

Part of me believes that, if Hae-Won was raised on the island surrounded by this society we see in the movie, her lack of action may come from the fact that she was raised to be alright with mysogeny and abuse. Sort of like how the old women are encouraging it. It doesnt excuse her lack of action but it definintly might explain it
Hey-one was the worst! I hated her the whole time!
Shay A Hell yeah she should have, and then some too!
*Hae wan*
Man i dont care if this comment gets lost but your videos are awesome
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing

Spooky, I don't even like or watch these kinds of movies, but I keep watching your channel because or your humor, realness, and most of all, your strong moral compass. I always click on your new videos and this was the best one yet! Keep up the great work! Best wishes. :)

I honestly was kinda mad Bok-Nam got done like that, she was like The Bride from Kill Bill + Jason.
Hae-won is a real life problem. That 'turn a blind eye because I don't wanna be involved' shit gets people killed
Just found your channel and It’s great because I wanna know about disturbing movies without having to be fully alone and invest all my own feelings into them. Especially this one. I literally felt faint after the murder spree oh my god.
You are absolutley amazing! I love your channel! You are in depth and no holds barred but still find some humour in it! I appreciate you!
Just so you know "Hae-Wan" sound like "Haiwan" in my native language Hindi. Which literally means "Devil".
