ABC 1981 Fall Promotion - "Now is the Time" (4 versions) - High-Band Color

- Four promotional films produced by the late, great Harry Marks of Marks Communications. Although there are several copies of this already online, I believe these may be the best available -- they were recorded off-air to a 2-inch broadcast videotape recorder. This video was captured directly from that tape -- no interim consumer formats! There are four versions here: three 1-minute spots, and one 30-second version.
Music composed by Jonathan and Mary Lyn Wolfert at JAM Creative Productions. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
And the great ernie Anderson abc voice over on the promos during the 80,s good times!! Now a days most network TV sucks!!
Harry was great to work with -- we did these promos at Modern Videofilm in the early 1980s. These were all color-corrected from a combination of cut negative and some print on an original Rank-Cintel Mk IIIB flying-spot scanner. It's amazing how well they hold up today.
Did Frank Gari do the jingle?
How were these animated? With computers?
@@pwehrle232 Sort of. If Abel was involved (like I've heard they were), the effects were previewed on computers, then rendered using stop-motion with computer-controlled cameras. You can actually see what looks like some of the previewer output in the video; look at the TV at 0:25 and the security monitors at 1:29.
@@jimscottsoldchannel7103 I don't have a cite handy at the moment, but I recall both the Clio citation and the Copyright Office entry saying Frank Gari and Artie Schroeck co-wrote it.
Always nice to see different variants of TV Promos--these I don't think I've EVER seen before.
The great Ernie Anderson, the voice of ABC.
ABC is the best for promos!
I would agree, but I also love this one from NBC: czcams.com/video/QopmioqWGOE/video.html
CBS had a good promo this year as well ("Reach For The Stars"), but NBC's was seemingly such a whiff that you can't even find footage of it. The only version of "Our Pride Is Showing" I've been able to find is a local version for WRC-TV someone posted years ago.
Arranged by Artie Schroeck. Same guy who arranged "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" with Bob Gaudio for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
Hey, that’s good knowledge. Thanks for posting it.
Crisp recording!!
Simpler and better times
Wonderful!
I love this
I always found it so strange that ABC neglected to include shows like Three's Company, Laverne and Shirley, Mork and Mindy, The Love Boat, or even Bosom Buddies in any of these.
As far as I can see the only time they managed to get Robin Williams & Pam Dawber in person for these promos was the 79 'Still The One' 'balloon' promo films. Tom Poston & Robert Donner did some rep work for Mork & Mindy in others. Be glad to be proved wrong though.
@@LFire12 Robin appears in a series of promos for Mork and Mindy around this time, but, when they went broadly promote the whole network, you don’t seem to see many people from their veteran series.
Likewise, I always found it weird that I recognized maybe half of the people in these promos despite being familiar with a bunch of ABC shows from the era (either because I watched them when I was teeny-tiny or caught them in reruns). Apparently the ABC soaps were a big deal in 1981-1982 and some of the featured players are from them, and I was all of 4 in 1981 so I wasn't going to know who they were.
@@lee4hmz Yeah, for instance, I don’t know who’s at 1:16, 1:19, and 1:20. I’m assuming daytime stars based on what you said. These network promos were always focused on prime time programming, though I have seen some include daytime stars, though rare. I remember seeing one of the 1979 “Still the One” promos on here, but, it featured some of the daytime casts in the hot air balloons.
And of course Jersey girl Genie Francis, 'Laura' from General Hospital as anyone who was alive on planet knows. EVERYONE watched that soap, man, woman and child, and pet! She's still married to Bethlehem PA boy Jonathan Frakes! Fantastic.
Yes, My Name Is "Colorado"
Now Is The Time, KRDO Is The Place
Was that Robert Stack grinning like a maniac at the end?
Yes indeed.
Stack was in a short-lived Friday night crime drama called 'Strike Force'.
At 0:24, the actor on the left and the actor in the middle both ended up in “Police Academy” didn’t they?
That's former NFL star Bubba Smith.
Who did the vocals?
Frank Gari, Artie Schroeck, Marty Nelson, Cathy Ingraham, Florence Warner, and Diva Grey.
@@jimscott2050 All of whom, IINM, also supplied the vocals to ABC's "Come on Along" campaign the following year...
ABC: Now Is The Time (1981)
Of course the great 'Voice of ABC' Ernie Anderson. (Father of filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson. I always wondered what it would be like to have the voice of ABC call you down for dinner. "Toniiiight, on the table...it's Roast Beeeeef and Haaaaam, with a little help from the graavyyyy. '
@1:14 Who is this Natalie Portman lookin babe?
Connie Sellecca
