the side bit holds the "ghost whistle" or the PKE. I took them off as well

I think that bit from the side of the pack you removed was for the Ghost Whistle they released.

I did the exact same thing and right when I finished ALL of the paint started cracking and peeling off. And I had to cover the whole thing in mod podge to seal it. I'm going to have to put light weights in the bottom of it because once I connected that tube It's nearly impossible for him to get the wand onto the proton pack and have it Click and connect because the tube keeps pulling up the proton pack and since it weighs absolutely nothing it's a big disaster.

Maybe you could put some kind of cover on the back so that it covers up the hollow interior.
