    A few months ago a non Cat shop replaced one of my injectors on my KCB C-13. I was asking about the CD that came with it and nobody had any ideal what it was for. The motor runs smooth and not noticing any problems. I have been really worried that their might be long term damage. After seeing this video it helps me sleep better at night. Thanks!

    Had a view of this vid. Was working on a C9.3 with #6 chucking up a "not responding properly" code. Sort of guessed that it may have had a new injector installed, but never got the trim code etc to properly get it working and I didn't want to lift the rocker cover. I did a fuel verification test, to see if that would say "recalibrate" the injector without having to get the trim code etc and it worked. But i'll keep your method in the back of my head. Nice find.

    When first 3406E and 3176B engines they had no trim code at first. So Cat used 1100 as default on 3406E's and 2300 on 3176B's. When new software came out, it was looking for a EUI code.
    What I have done, is run a high speed cylinder cut out test. Put engine at high idle and data log the run. Fan, A/C, air compressor not pumping, engine at operating temp. Kill five cylinders and let it run for one minute to stabilize. Kill number one and fire number two quickly, do this until all cylinders are tested and have all cylinders firing again. Look at your data log, mainly engine speed. You are looking for balance on all six cylinders. You could have a cylinder(s) over fueling or worn and under fueling. This way you are putting that injector at one hundred percent rack. I like to kill and then fire to see if that cylinder has the power to pull it back up. If the cylinder is weak and you know the engine will die, you will have to fire before you kill the other cylinder.
    A chassis dyno you kill one cylinder at a time.

      it's commonly done in data communication, to include a small block of 'check digits' along with a string of numbers to confirm that all digits in the string are correct, without simply repeating them. Look up 'parity' or 'CRC' for more info. the CAT 7.1 injector trim file number is actually a 120 bit binary number (like a GUID), printed in hex (base 16, ie hexadecimal, whose digits are all 0-9 or A-F), and the check digits are to confirm all of its digits are correct, so you don't get the entirely wrong file because you missed just one digit in your writing it down...

I have a 2WS getting less than 5 mpg all the time running it like a grandma lol I just noticed my coolant temp sensor that goes into the side of the thermostat housing is unhooked, but the one on top is hooked up though. My gauge works, my fan wiring is jacked so the fan only comes on on a toggle but my question is, will that one that goes in the side affect my fuel economy? Best way to tune a Cat motor is a PDI tuner or an older Cat file. The new Cat files SUCK because of the Low NOX files they put in them. PDI Turbo,PDI Tuner,Manifold ect will make the great 3406E AMAZING. Better MPG,Better Power ect. I know this doesnt mean much to this video BUT to anyone trying to tune one of these things right,he's a good simple way.

    Hi, i have a challenger mt875b with c18 acert engine. I bought 5 reman injectors ,i want to replace it because it already has 7,000 hours in it. But te manufacturer said: “The injectors do not have the trim code because they are manually calibrated within a maximum difference of 1% in the fuel delivery. Caterpillar provides the trim code because their injectors are not manually calibrated. We sold 100+ injectors of this family with no returns from the market.” and “ you need to tell your mechanic to do the same job he does on OEM injectors except for two things: 1) Leave the old trim codes in the ECM 2) He does not have to do the injectors calibration in the ECM.“. I really don't have to change the original Trim codes? it is possible?

    • @JeffMTX
      @JeffMTX Před 2 lety

      Take my comment with a grain of salt. I'm only an amateur mechanic, but a veteran electrical engineer. You might enjoy reading online about "linear systems" (an entire field of study- people make careers out of it) -- my point being: the injector essentially has a "transfer function" or input/output relationship such that you *put in* 1) a certain fuel pressure and flow capacity behind that fuel pressure and 2) an electrical switching pulse to make the injector *put out* a pulse of fuel. We can't just assume that for a square input pulse we're going to get an instantaneous square pulse of fuel out. For starters, there's going to be a *delay* after the input pulse, before any fuel comes out. Moreover, the delayed fuel output pulse will also likely have a 'rise time' from zero gallons per second (ie flow rate) up the the maximum flow that will spurt out of the injector during its squirt pulse. Then, you have the same kind of dynamics as the pulse is closed off. It will fall smoothly back down to zero (closed).
      .
      All of these rates and things are described by one single transfer function curve, and while I do not KNOW this, I suspect that is what is contained in the injector file. They make the injector, and then they run it through a test machine that actually measures its input/output relationship (almost identical to a response curve for that big woofer you bought back in 1984!), and they put that curve in a file. And then they identify the file with that god-awful 30-digit hex number.

    • @johngoldsmith6629
      @johngoldsmith6629 Před 3 lety +1

      Cat trim files are four digit older engines just tell ECM what number is. Newer engines require a file. You get it with a new EUI on a CD. Or download from Cat if you have security clearance, and on the EUI is a four digit confirmation code. A trim file tries to balance out fuel delivery at maximum output for that part number EUI. So they all should meter the same amount of fuel when installed. As I work in the truck world the four digit code has been cracked and truck drivers put the code that meters high amount of fuel. Problem one is voids warranty if you have any. If emissions checked may fail and pay a fine. What I dislike is you now have a unbalanced engine, as if you have a really strong EUI. It will cause that cylinder to hit harder. Thus you could have a vibration or something else. If you want to turn it up, balance the cylinders and change the FLS/FTS, blow head gasket's and buy more parts.

      I second this..... I need correct info regarding my truck so I can have it corrected. Roadtrip isn't a problem, honest knowledged troubleshooting mechanics are very rare.... I can't stand a "parts replacer list" mechanic, IF it's #5 , fix #5 and not 1-4 first. Adept Ape what's happened to the old CAT program that matched tires, transmission, engine, etc.??? All the dealers I've asked have that dumb founded look and don't know it existed or say thats old and deleted. I know a tire up size has effected part of my issues from 10 series to 11's BUT NO ONE can tell me IF it's the true issue or multiple underlyings. Thanks

    ,,, kinda a shame most Diesel engine manufacturers don't put that much effort into getting the air that even cylinder to cylinder .

    How the Hell does an engine cough up a valve out the intake??

    • @johngoldsmith6629
      @johngoldsmith6629 Před 3 lety +1

      Intake valve spring breaks, ACERT, could have a IVA problem. Had a 3406E, EUI spring broke. Coil moved over the top of intake roto coil and unkeeped the valve. Stem and all dropped down into the cylinder.

    I know you're pretty busy between work and making your awesome CZcams videos but you're probably one of the most knowledgeable person to ask this question to.
    Do you think hydrogen systems work for diesel engines?
    I was looking into this system I have three short videos below if you have time I would like your input on what you think.
    Thanks
    this link shows the system on its own not installed to a truck
    czcams.com/video/fP_1Fe6sET4/video.html
    This link here shows it installed to a big rig.
    czcams.com/video/KZqZbd-0jEg/video.html
    And this last link it's actually on a Dodge Ram Dually Cummins doing a driving test getting 30 mpg vs 16 mpg is the average for these type of truck.

    NOPE doesn't need to be done all hotrodders claim it gives them MORE power and NEVER HAD A ISSUE. What they don't know 2 of numbers for timing other 2 for fuel but they never told us which ones. Sticking in number 6900 is not always going to give you more power. Actually you make engine have imbalance one cyl may fire sooner and give less fuel and next cyl opposite. Seen many hotrod engine with broken cranks or head gasket blown out badly. Seen one fuel was cranked up so much engine had fuel knock in tell engine had some temp in it. TRIM codes what make ecm fire at same time and put same amount fuel in each cyl. True engine tuner can give or take fuel and timing through software. But so many think just change trim code good as gold (HINT run from these guys)
