- 2013-2017 Honda Accord 3.5L V6 ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid Service. In this video I show how to replace the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) on a 2013-2017 Honda Accord with a 3.5L V6 engine using genuine Honda ATF-DW1 transmission fluid. How to change the transmission fluid on a Honda Accord V6. The exact vehicle in this video is a 2017 Honda Accord EX sedan with a 3.5L V6 engine. 2013-2017 Accords with a V6 engine should be similar. Enjoy!

Hey Big Dog! How can I get intouch with you? Wanted to ask you a few things
I’m extremely happy you did a video on the V6 model of this car. It’s rare I’ll see a maintenance video on the V6 version it’s crazy.
One thing to mention, when servicing the 6-speed “Hondamatic” it’s a lot easier to fill the transmission with its fluid through the dipstick. Mostly because filling it up from the fill-plug could be difficult at times, & the dipstick cylinder/hole is wide enough to accept most funnels.
Can the job then be done without ever removing the trans fill bolt? Simply removing dipstick, removing/reinstalling drain bolt and filling through dipstick hole? Is removing the dipstick enough to help the trans fully drain?
@@turbocharged9589 yes that is correct, fill bolt does not need to be removed and you can add fluid through dipstick tube. You will need a long funnel or one that has a flexible hose. I did it this way for my 13 accord v6 (same process as the one seen in the vid)
@NZN_Motorwerks correct
Perfect timing man changing my old lady’s v6 accord trans fluid today. There’s a million CVT videos but not the traditional 6spd automatic
Watched your video a couple of times and then did my first EVER transmission fluid change on a 2016 Accord V6. Thank you for making and keeping the video active. Even after buying some tools to do the job it cost a TOTAL of ~$60 for a transmission fluid change. The second one should be under $40 because now I have all the equipment. The Honda dealership near me was well over $100 if they did the work.
This shop by my house was asking for $160 oil change and they said $300 for transmission oil change if it's a cvt. God damn man, i'm doing it myself . I got 2015 v6, might be just like this accord in the video.
I've had the dealer do the last few, but I was just quoted $220 so I'm here to diy. $55 for the ATF and drain plug washer 👍
Best video I have watched in a long time. Straight to it and very detailed, great job!
I appreciate the comment, thank you!
Great job.
Its good to hear that the last year of the V6 has a conventional transmission. I thought it was a CVT which was a turn off for me.
👍
Thanks a million. Really the best video on transmission fluid flush on Honda Accord v6 2017
I appreciate the comment, thank you!
This car is so nice, would be a dream with the manual.
Thanks for the DIY upload. I’m pretty handy with cars and did oil changes, brake fluid and coolant flush on my son’s Honda V6 EX-L but has never serviced the ATF yet. Your video saves me a lot of research work. THANK YOU!
The dealership didn't know these cars used transmission fluid so I did it myself. Found out if you lift the ass of the car up higher than the front you van get an extra quart out. Also recommending changing the filter with a Magnefine 3/8 P/N 3810000 which also has a bypass pluse a magnet 🧲 not included with OEM. Remember ATF flow is from top hose to bottom hose your welcome for the research. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, I just changed the fluid in mine today. tipped the back end of the car up for draining. It took all four quarts that I had. Just a fuzz above the top level on the dipstick.
How do you change the filter one one of these. Honda’s “Hondamatic” transmission design doesn’t allow for the main filter to be changed. I wish there was a video one this.
Great video. What about the transmission filter?
I added fluid by putting a long funnel down the dipstick hole and pouring slowly. No fussing around with washers and took no time at all
Very nice video. Too bad they can't make the dipstick a little longer&or more accessible. However, having one is a bonus
Thanks for sharing. I learned that washers have a flat side and a round side. Cheers!
Glad you got something out of it, thanks for the comment!
I appreciate the short and sweet intro. Thank you for not blasting our ears.
Great video as always.
Some people disagree about the importance of checking transmission fluid level while warm on Hondas.
Could you please do a comparison video of transmission fluid level while cold as against while warm?
I'll see what I can do, thanks for the comment!
Wow! Thanks so much. V6 accord videos are hard to find. Great lighting and demonstration! Next, can you share a video on how to remove the ecm for this same vehicle?
Excellent video sir. Kudos!
Thanks!
My 2015 Honda Accord EX-L V6 Coupe has a dip stick hole that i use a long funnel to fill it up with.
Me too. I’ve been wondering if there’s a difference filling up there?
@@mikeoffical532 None as far as my research goes. I've done 5 drain and fills on my car and it's been perfect!
Thanks for another great video. Best channel on CZcams. At what intervals would you recommend doing this transmission service? 🇺🇸
I recommend doing this service at least once every 30,000 miles. Thank you I appreciate the comment!
Fantastic! Thank you!
Thanks for the comment 👍!
Great video, really like that you showed the jack points and the tips for the DIYers.
Thanks for the video. Awesome info. I replaced the transmission filter located under the battery, and ended up being a full 4 quarts to get fluid to show up on the dipstick.
Great video thank you, I have a 2016 EX-L V6, I think my mechanic put in all 4 quarts vs 3.3 quarts. You think the extra 3/4 quart will do harm otherwise I will drain some out. Same for the engine oil he dumps the whole 5-quart jug and the manual states only need 4.5 with an oil filter so an extra 1/2 quart of oil hopefully no harm.
The engine oil might not cause any issues but the ATF could, I would put the proper amounts in if it were my vehicle. Too much ATF can cause shifting issues or creeping while in N, too little could damage the transmission so the level needs to be correct. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for this video. Well done, informative, and detailed. Took me about 30 minutes start to finish. That filler cap…..damn. I tried it with 3/8” ratchet, it snapped my POS extension!
Since I changed my Honda transmission fluid regularly, I only buy three quarts from the dealer. I use a measured clean plastic cup to catch one third of a quart of the used fluid while it is draining. I'm not trying to save any money but I hate keeping unsealed containers of any automotive fluids in my house.
Thank you for sharing the content & parts number links.
About every 30k mi. We change the external trans filter & a "3x3" drain svc.
You can fill the transmission fluid from the dipstick hole instead and save yourself all the effort.
Purposely looked at the comments to see if anyone addressed this. I thought the same thing
I was thinking the same thing. I'm changing my fluid this weekend and I'll probably just put the funnel in the dipstick hole to make things easier.
Yes you can it goes to the same place anyway
Exactly, on the 6-Speed “Hondamatic” the dipstick hole is wide enough to accept most funnels. Just be careful when filling it up, as the pressure difference inside the transmission vs the outside atmosphere will cause some of the fluid burst out if you try to fill it to fast.
I have a transmission funnel and this is the second time I have filled in the dipstick hole and no issues. I agree little slow is better, to not leak fluid.
thank you for this. every step was perfectly detailed. greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much for this throughly made video. Very detailed step by step. Saved me a ton vs going to the dealer. ❤
Thank you for the comment!
Really enjoyed the video. Thank you for the great instructions and tips. I wish you had included the transmission filter change as well though.
Could I refill it from the dipstick if I stripped the bolt and don’t want to take it off again
Yes you can
This was extremely helpful. It made it very easy.
Good video right to the point no BS.
Thanks 👍!
Thanks for sharing Dave. You and family have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July weekend Artie 🇺🇸
Thanks Artie, same to you!
Do they have a transmission filter to change after dropping the pan?
Using the top fill plug is not hard and less mess refilling than dipstick tube lol Plus it will refill faster, unless you wanna wait forever using the tube. Doing buddies '12 Crosstour right now for him
I'll look forward to any CVT service in the future. Thanks.
👍
Great video, you left nothing to chance and safety precautions were also taken. Awesome vid my friend
I just changed mine tonight and I used the dipstick hole to fill it. Didn't know there was a plug in the back.
It can be done that way, just takes longer and a funnel that fits inside the dipstick tube (on V6 engines). Most older 4 cylinder models are made to fill through the dipstick tube (it's quite a bit larger).
Thank you very much for the video.
You fill in the dipstick hole and avoid changing the fill plug gasket
These are great cars love mine, good video
Thanks 👍!
Can I fill the transmission from the dipstick pipe?
ones again doing well video thanks Dr honda 👍💪🏻💯🇵🇷
Thanks 👍!
Thanks for the video. '14 Accord Auto V6 110k in cool weather doesn't quickly shift into 2nd from 1st (pedal drops/engine revs, then pops into 2nd). Also gets stuck in 3rd. Park then Drive resolves that. Trans fluid change 2-3x in past 2 years. Would you change again and add an additive like Lucas? Filter, shift solenoid or something else? Thanks in advance for ideas!
nice presentation
Thanks 👍!
Very informative video. Need some help here please. I just got a 2012 accord 3.5L V6 coupe with 66k miles. Do you know if your procedure applies tor the 2012 model? Sucks but there are not many videos about the 3.5 engine. Thanks for any help
As always, very nice video.
Thanks!
No need to warm the oil…just measure how much was removed and add that!
Another great video Big Dog.
Thanks!
Gracias, excelente video👌🏻
Thanks 👍!
Mega job! May I ask you what kind of diagnostics do you use? Can you send me the model? I am interested to purchase one.
Worse case you can't get that ATF fill bolt off you can slow fill it in the dipstick hole.
👍
Great job as usual
Thanks 👍!
Nice well explained thank you
Wow. Such detailed video
What are your thoughts on doing a drain and fill twice in order to get more “new” fluid in there?
That shouldn’t be necessary if you keep up with changing it on time, but if you don’t mind wasting some fresh trans fluid that is a good way to clean out the old stuff a little better.
Better idea is to change the transmission fluid every oil change. That keeps the transmission fluid on an indefinite fresh cycle. Tranny oil is easier to change than the engine oil so only takes a few minutes (use the dipstick to refill, and ignore the trolls who say otherwise)
Do these models have transmission oil filter
Great video!! Would you be able to do a video for a coolant flush on a V6 model?
Thanks Bigdog! Very helpful. I will do this next weekend. Can this be done without that extension? I have nothing like it.
I just filled it through the dipstick with a fluid transfer hand pump. Way easier and worked fine. YMMV.
Great vid. Even levelled the car…👍
Thanks 👍!
This is a great video. So today I went to buy a 2016 Acura TL V6 (Acura version of this car) and found that there is NO dipstick. In addition, the change procedure involves taking out a plug from the horizontal side of the trans to make sure fluid just drips out at exactly 104 degrees operating temp (with the engine running). AND it uses Honda Type 3.1 fluid. Why is it so different?
I believe those had the zf 9 speed transmission if I remember correctly
Correct. The Honda and Acura do not have the same transmissions??@@devondelgado1818
What is point of taking off the fill bolt?
To make sure you’ll be able to fill it before you drain it. If you drained your transmission fluid and then went to take the fill bolt off and it was stuck, you’d be screwed.
Great video brother. I’m a CZcamsr. Also appreciate your hard work in great detail.
Nice video, is there a way to reset transmission maintenice manual without scan tool? Thanks
Do you need a special tool to reset the maintenance minder? Can you do a video showing that part please?
Great video, very clear with good lighting and camera angles, plus you explained all the little details. Thank you.
Cant u refill using dipstick hole?
Thanks for sharing
You bet!
Can you refil using dipstick hole instead of the fill bolt area?
Yes you can I have done it my last change no problem
I have 2016 v6 coupe and honda told me that's the wrong fluid it should be HCF-2
HCF2 is for CVT. This demonstration is clearly a 6AT.
Good to know that at least the fluid can be changed more often. Especially with no filter to access I would definitely NOT recommend following the …Lifetime Fluid” schedule…..The fluid will last the lifetime of the transmission…read that back to yourself slowly and you will see the problem.
I've been told that there is an external filter. I was given a price for it today. I couldn't tell you the part number as I've not picked it up yet.
Question, What about filter?
There is an external serviceable filter located under the battery. The other is inside the transmission.
Any videos of changing the filter out as well? I am some slight issues similar to many others who posted. And I have yet to change the filter on this car since I bought it.
I don't have any ATF filter videos as of this writing.
Great video
Thanks 👍!
Hi love your videos my cat was stolen on my 03 element replaced everything 02 sensors up and downstream and a new cat still getting and downstream code checked my sensor and wire harnesses with meters everything seems to be working properly please help
Caution jacking accord rear end on that tie down hook under trunk. Actually bent bottom of spare tire well, had to persuade it back down with BFH AND 2x4 impactor to allow cover to lay flat . Maybe just my car?
Not sure what happened on yours but that's the designated lift point in the rear on this generation Accord (and many other Hondas). Of course as they age and rust and corrosion take a toll that can change things.
@@BigDog50001 thank u for response . I thought it was designated lift point also. 2005 accord EX no rust . Felt stupid when wife asked what I did to the trunk. , because the flat thin board cover was sitting 2 inches proud
I’m new to cars so this was helpful. Do you not need to change the filter? Is this also considered a flush or just a change?
This is not a flush, Honda does not recommend flushing. This is a drain (partial) and refill. As far as filters go, there should be an external filter on this generation V6 czcams.com/video/0o4lh9_AyG0/video.html
@@BigDog50001 I appreciate the response. I watched the video and gave it a thumbs up. Not sure if you’ll see this but I’ve got a 2013 year of this same model and I don’t thing the transmission fluid has ever been partially replaced. Mine has 128k miles on it and I feel like it’s starting to shift not as smooth but I’m hoping this can help it. Partial fluid changes should still be okay even if it hasn’t been serviced before with this many miles, correct?
Having what I think to be are trans issues… @ 40 mph while cruising the car seems to be surging like it doesn’t know if it wants to shift or not. 93k miles 2017 v6 accord. Also making a hard shift @ about 20mph while slowly accelerating. Can anyone suggest what they think might be the problem? Appreciate it.
Having the same issue with mine around 20mph
It could be a dirty or plugged transmission filter. Have you changed the filter out on it yet?
@@Harrisonweightman I just had my fluild switched out at 50k miles. I bought the car around 44k and I don't think the previous owner had the transmission serviced. The technician said the fluid was black. So far no slips.
Could be the fuel pump recall
Same here , also when I put it in reverse the trans slips sometimes . What can the problem be?
Can you do a video on the service bulletin re: starter replacement/ fly wheel adjustment? I’ve replaced many starters. The flywheel rotation is new to me.
Honda says 30K, but I change mine a little early as I want the transmission to last as long as possible.
@@tomsullivan2907 George is talking about the flywheel service bulletin not changing the fluid. Honda service bulletin 16-002.
i rotated the flexplate flywheel one bolt clockwise and it worked for a bit and now its starting to have problems my next step is replacing the starter
This is just an odd question as i am thinking of buying a used car for my first car. And i am obviously looking for a very reliable car for at least 5 years to drive as in now in 2022. I am always a big fan of honda accord and civic. I do drive a bit speedy as well. And i saw that on the market there is a honda accord V6L model on sale with 110K km on it. But then after some research i did heard there were many problem occuring with the honda accord during these year around 2013~2016. So will you recommend to buy a used honda accord v6l for a first car or should i just buy a honda civic 2017~2018 which is not the 1.5l turbo engine but the standard 1.8 l engine. Anyone are welcome to give me an advice.
Thanks for the video, what is a maintenance minder?
It is built into the car's computer and is a messaging system that pops up on the dash/instrument cluster that tells you service is due. After service is done this system needs to be reset (told that the service is complete). Thanks for the comment!
@@BigDog50001 How to enter the maintenance page to reset (like you did in your video) ?
Hi Big Dog 50001. One of your subscribers. I change my atf for honda accord 2012. The problem I got is when I put it back the atf bolt. I over tighten it and it crack the female nut or where you put back the bolt. What should I do? Can you help me? I live in Sacramento Ca. Please.!
I have a 2014 Honda Accord with a 3.5L V6. It has about 75,000 miles on it. The other day I was driving it when all of a sudden this blinking signal popped up on the gauges that looks like a D3 except the D appears to have a X that goes through it. I looked in the owners manual and it appears that this mystery code is not in there. Has anyone else here have the same problem? Do you know what the problem could be. When this signal goes off, the LDW and FCW lights also come on at the same time. This causes the forward collision and lane departure warning signals to stop working entirely.
I would scan the system for trouble codes to start, there should be some codes stored in memory.
What was the mileage? I'm really trying to take care of my transmission since my last car blew its out. I'm certified in maintenance and light repair, so as long as I documented all the specs I followed and everything It shouldn't void my warranty.
At what mileage does it recommends to change it out. My 2017 has about 57,000 miles so far.
Can I skip removing the fill plug entirely? The dealer parts dept gave me the ATF and only one washer for the drain plug. I'm wondering if I could just use the dipstick hole instead of needing to remove the fill plug and go back to the dealer for a new washer.
Easier to just reuse the old washer. Ideally, you want to do this procedure 2 or 3 times to get (almost) all the old fluid out. I wouldn't even change either washer until the last time. In the mean time you can swing by and get the proper washer.
Yes. That’s how I’ve serviced our odyssey transmission since new and it has 200k miles on it now and still shifting smooth
I have a 2014 V6 with a CVT
Anyone have problems with the transmission specifically the V6 touring model with 6spd showing a "transmission system problem" warning light on the dash??
I would probably scan it for trouble codes to start.
@@BigDog50001 I have a P2714. what does this mean
I have the same issue, did you figure out why it was happening ?
@@raymonddeleon3613 I never found the problem. I flushed the transmission twice. Nothing. I ended up selling to Carvana for profit.
I have this “transmission system problem”. Should I change transmission fluid? Does Honda care cover under warranty? Any suggestions?
I have an A3 light at 116000 miles one dealer recommends drain and fill with new filter for 190, another dealer recommends flush for 375 and says it doesn’t have a serviceable filter just a mesh screen? Any advice on which way to go would be appreciated
Were is the RPM sencor
U don't change the inline filter?
I do the internal filter every 100k but I do the online filter every 30k. I drive 90% highway miles so my car isn't laborious and over heated in stop and go traffic so I just do the recommended.
After i replace the internal filter I unhook the ignition and turnover three 2second no firing engine turn overs so we don't Start the vehicle with air inside the filter causing a dry start which transmissions don't self lubricate as quickly or resiliently like an engine does so u need to do a few non firing turn overs before starting. Treat every car like your car.
Big Dog! I just purchased a 2013 Accord V6 with 93,000 miles, and I don't have any service records showing a transmission fluid change in that time. Do you recommend doing the 3x transmission flush (draining and refilling 3 times with 10 min drive for each change) on my change here? Thanks in advance for your help and your great videos!
Since nobody answered, if you change the engine oil every 4-5k mi and drive 15-20k mi/year, an alternative is to change the trans fluid at the same time for the next year. Valvoline Max synthetic for Hondas has worked well (YRMV).
My 2013 Hond accord has 64k miles and it thrusts every time I switch it to drive or reverse. Do you know why?
Is the amount of fluid the same for every year? I have a 2014
Is it true that Honda Genuine DW-1 is manufactured by Idemitsu?
My 2014 honda accord v6 coupe has an ATF bolt behind the engine air filter and that where it says to fill it up. Please advise!
Forget that, use the transmission dip stick with a long nose funnel. Ignore anyone who says to do so otherwise.
What millage do you change transmission oil ?
Why we need to open the ATF bolt while we can fill the transmission fluid through the fluid checker hole?
What fluid checker hole? That’s why he used the ATF bolt.
That is the hole which you plug the dip stick to check the level of transmission fluid
There’s no filter for this ones?
