Good video...one tip on the trans fluid. I always put my old trans fluid in a pitcher and measure how much came out and then just add the same amount of new fluid back in. Simple and no guess work.
This works -- if the fill level was correct before you changed it out. My transmission fluid was overfilled by the factory. Not much, but I put less in than I took out to try to get it right at the full mark.
Hi, The trans fluid will drain smoother if you remove the dipstick before draining. Good instructions👍
I totally forgot to remove it before I drained. Good point.
@Izaiah Avery Yup, I have been watching on Flixzone for months myself :)
There’s a fill plug marked atf behind air box
Still requires same funnel though haha
Awesome video! Great instructions, thorough and detailed video as well - appreciate it!
Thank you.
I think you and I have different definitions of beaters 😂
That's what I was thinking immediately
great video. going to do trans and oil. Never done this on my accord yet but looks easy enough.
It's definitely a must do thing.
Have the same V6 accord. I used a ziplock bag around the old oil filter to catch the drips.
Good idea!
Like your supervisor. Wearing protective gloves might be good in the future. I mark empty clear 4 gallon jug with markings of 1/2 gallon and put used transmission fluids to find out exactly how much to put in. No guessing needed.
Smart. I'll do that next time.
Thanks for the helpful information 👍👏
My pleasure
Best DIY for 9th gen accord.
Thanks. It was a easy job
Great video. Changed my trans fluid yesterday. although, I recommend keep the car flat as possible when draining ATF
Yes I had it flat
its wasnt flat.. it was on stands that why on 3 quarts came out and not 3.3..
Excellent vid.., thankx.
I like the Supervioser part :) so cute doggie ,, great video
Thank you 🤗
Nice tutorial!
Thanks!!!
Yo next time you do a Oil Change again on the Honda Accord. To avoid any mess use a plastic tag plate and insert underneath the oil filter and than make sure you have oil drain bucket underneath to catch the old oil. Try it. A trick to avoid a messy lower control arm and lower splash shield 👍💯
Will try it thanks
I there any type of transmission filter associated with the Honda V6's. I have a 2010 Accord I'll be doing this to shortly?
jacks+ stands+cinder blocks + tree trunks... good idea!
Bricks, mother in law….etc. lol
Transmission fluid should be warm WITH ENGINE OFF when checking fluid per Honda factory service manual. Otherwise excellent video!
How did you get the red dash in the v6 model? I thought that was only on the sport
Maybe change the crush washer :) good video bro
Eh Honda is a beast don't need to lol
Great walkthrough in the video. As an owner of the 2016 V6 Accord, I do find the transmission can be a bit abrupt when down shifting and lot of online forums say this is the case. Did you notice a difference in shifting after you replaced the fluid? And how often you recommend the transmission fluid be replaced?
Mine is smoother now. I would do it every 40k
I have a 2016 V6 Accord and I just replaced my trans fluid at 87k miles for the first time. I did experience the abrupt down shifting and its a night and day difference now.
Glad to hear it
Does it also go by years or just miles regardless of how old the car is?
What about the transmission filter ? It’s necessary or not ?
Next time pull the dipstick to allow the fluid to drain smoothly.
Thx for the video. For easier oil filter removal, take the tire off (use Jack stand instead of ramp). At least on the 2014 model there’s an easily changed inline trans filter behind the air filter housing (remove that and battery). Honda#25430-PLR-003.
Thanks man
LOL I guess I've waited a bit too long to do this one. MY car is a 2009 Accord EX-L coupe with 145,000 miles on it! Mostly Highway miles, granted, but tranny still shifts great.
It IS a HONDA, remember!! These vehicles will go 200K miles on the highway with no major repairs.
I found a Castrol substitute for the brand name Honda fluid if anyone is interested. It says it can be used to replace Honda ATF-Z1 or Honda DW-1 fluid as long as its not a CVT transmission, which mine is not. Those didnt come until about 5 or so years later. It is called Castrol Transmax Import Multi-Vehicle ATF. It is a full synthetic fluid. Existing fluid is still a bright pink so I guess I'm not real worried about it. To be safe though, I'm only going to replace it one quart at a time and see how it performs along the way. GREAT VIDEO!
OK so I did this several months ago and decided to do 3qts at once. No problems so far shifting beautifully!
Hi! I have a 2014 accord v6 sedan at 31k. I just checked my tranny fluid, it’s not as dark as yours, so I think I’ll wait till 40k. So I tried to fit under the car without jacking it up, I was able to get my 3/8 wrench into the nut and still have enough room to turn it. I then tried to fit my 15 inch long torque wrench, but it had to be face the front of the car to be able to turn it. I bought a 5 inch tall oil drain pan, which will fit underneath and still be able to loose the nut with hand. I think it’ll be easier if I just buy a jack.....I already have 2 stands, but I don’t know.
Yea to drain it it's easier with tht car up
I looked for, but could never find, the fill location. There were 3 bolts of about the same size but the front and rear ones were marked "10" or maybe "D1" the middle bolt head was marked "FL". I removed the FL bolt and tried to put fluid in it and it wouldn't accept any and ran out on the floor. I don't know what that bolt is for and I hope I didn't screw anything up.
Edit: I finally found the fill bolt, it is under two hoses and 6-10 inches toward the passenger side than I had been looking.
How often are folks changing their transmission fluid in their 9th Gen Accords with 6 speed Automatic transmissions? I find my transmission shifts rough at 15K miles, and when I change it (the 3-3.5 quart drain and fill), it smooths out. I'm doing the changes at every other oil change. Is that overkill?
Definitely overkill. Do it every 30k
The trans fluid level is the hardest thing to check on the dipstick. I ended up sticking a white flexible pipe cleaner in the dip stick hole just so i could get an accurate indication. Major Pain in the a$$
you should have some wheel chocks in the back dude! safety first! good video tho, i wanna do this on my '17 V6 coupe
I pull the hand brake up those wheels not moving. Do it so easy
When checking the trans fluid level was the vehicle running or its engine off?
Off
When you drained the transmission fluid, did you let it drain until no more fluid came out and then put in the three quarts?
Yes
do you think doing this on a slight incline would be ideal? my driveway isn’t flat sigh
It's actually better if you're backed into the driveway because the car will be closer to level when it's raised on the stands. Just make sure to chock the rear wheels.
Why did you shake the bottle.??
How do we check the transmission fluid level on the GS-F?
Sadly we can't. It doesn't have a dip stick. It's a sealed transmission.
Not even via obd II Computer?
how often do you change gearbox fluid?
I like to do it early. 40k
Got a 2016 accord and it has high Milage and the trans def has some hard shifting. Not sure if it’s ever been changed before so would you still recommend changing it? Got about 140k
I got a 2013 with the same miles, I’m going to add some stop slip and then do a transfusion in a month
@@bigtuco0496 im just scared it’ll do more harm then good to change it but still wanted a second opinion. Thanks for the reply!
@@Jnotmoney I don’t know why a lot of mechanics online say it will hurt the car’s transmission. I think it may be the case in older cars but I had a 2007 civic that was shifting hard and I did a transfusion and it started working flawlessly again. Today I emptied 24 oz of the fluid in my accord and replaced it with the Lucas trans stop slip. It started shifting a little smoother but I think doing a trans flush will help a lot
@@Jnotmoney just an update if you still haven’t done it , I got my transmission flushed 2 weeks ago and it’s performing way better.
How’s the car running after the drain & fill?
Very good
why didn't you change the external filter?
That external filter doesn't need to be changed
Do you do the tune up on the GS as well ?
Yes
You need 3 times drain and fills to change out 83% of old fluid. Each drain & fill changes out only 3.3 quarts. There is 7.4 quarts total in the transmission - rest in torque converter. Do 2nd and 3rd D/F after driving it for 10 miles between changes. Also, change the crush washer for both oil and transmission plugs. The washers can be crush a few times before it won't crush no more and not seal right.
All true
I reused mine. Call the dealer they sell it it's pro like. 90 cents
That's not what honda recommends.
Anyone have problems with the transmission specifically the V6 touring model with 6spd showing a "transmission system problem" warning light on the dash??
Not me
I'm going to change my transmission fluid today and I'll see if it maybe goes away.
@@elcachanilla1759 did it solve your problem ? My touring is having the same issue
Hi, I am from India. My 05 Accord V6 automatic refused to move in Drive when lights changed to green. It did after 15 min of cooling. Took it to shop and they flushed and refilled. It seems to be holding out. Do you think it will happen again? Shop guy says nothing wrong with transmission. He says I might need a new radiator as car is heating up a lot even on a short slow speed drive. Does a hot engine temporarily shut down transmission?
Ask the shop I don't knoe
probably didn't have proper amount of fluid
Use pressure washer and spray out ur radiator and transmission cooler. If u drive on dirt roads it easily clogs up.
The transmission doesn't have a filter?
It does in the oil pan. U have to drop the oil pan to change it. I was just changing fluid
You had to remove the ATF bolt first, then fill it back through there and through the dip stick 😂
Does the gsf have a transmission dip stick
No it does not its a sealed transmission
@@BulletsGarage just like my is stupid Lexus design it's a little more involved to change the fluid
How important is it to have the car level when draining the automatic transmission fluid?
when draining it does not matter. for the honda it only matters when you fill it and then check the levels
@@BulletsGarage that is actually not correct. If you drain the ATF from the V6 with the front end raised you will get less of the old fluid to drain. I have tested this with mine and when I lowered the front more old fluid drained out.
Really how ?
@@RRofick We did it by jacking up the rear...comes closer to draining 4 qts.
Does your accord have really aggressive/jerky down shifting?
Ben Pearce sometimes
I have a 2017 V6 sedan and yes when I’m braking the car start down shifting very aggressive and makes the car brake more than what I expected and is a little bit annoying, also on regular driving the shifts are not smooth at all 😅
@@BulletsGarage have a 2017 V6 sedan and when I’m braking the car start down shifting very aggressive and makes the car brake more than what I expected and is a little bit annoying, also on regular driving the shifts are not smooth at all mostly 1st to 2nd and probably 2nd to 3rd 😅
How many miles on the car??
@@BulletsGarage 43K miles
You said the car requires 7.7L but you only did 3 qts of transmission fluid? Why did you only replace 3 qts and not the full 7.7? What about the remaining 4 qts. Will it hurt the car not having that changed?
The only way to get all the fluid out you need to have a social machine to do a flush. I just did a drain and fill.
Bullets Garage so I’m at 50k miles now if I do the 3 qts like you when should I do it again after that?!?
70k
The drain/flush with 3.3 qts is more of a 'refresh' of the trans fluid. Honda says to complete a full system drain/flush at 90k.
The owner's manual describes the full procedure: three, yes THREE drain-and-fills with 'breif periods of driving between'. You will never, ever drain an automatic transmission's complete fluid capacity in a single drain. Ever. The main valve body and torque converter will together retain well over half of the automatic transmission's fluid capacity. Honda explicitly forbids flushing the tranny and instead, recommends the 3x3 drain-and-fill; and even then, you've only replaced approximately 82% of the old fluid. Drain-and-filling transmission fluid only one time CAN be considered good preventative maintenance, given the interval is frequent and regular. Good video.
Don't reuse crush washers.
Why you shaking the fluid, it's not Chocolate milk 😀 plus it might froth it.
Lmao I love to shake things
DavesGenny
Some times the additives in fluids can settle at the bottom I always shake fluids a little, not enough to froth it though. For example if you ever use penzoil platinum ultra syn look in the bottom of the empty jug you’ll see some of their additive package that settled at the bottom.
Yup that's why I always shake them up a bit. Better shake then not. Got nothing to lose.
Most transmission fluids say "shake vigorously" on the bottlem so kudos to you. Screw the keyboard subject Matter experts
Im buying a 8t Gen them earth dreams direct injection im iffy seen many complaints of oil dillusion problems
That's possible
Just did my transmission fluid change. 8 years, 17k miles....
Yeah, I fail 😂
Engine oil capacity:
5.3 us quarts or 5 liters
its just under 5 quarts
Video ok but u were changing trans filter too. Now l have to find a video on that. Maybe by someone else
It's not matter where you fill transmission fluid?
There is fill plug for transmission fluid
It’s easier to fill from the dip stick
@@BulletsGarage My concern is if it safe to fill from dip stick
@@dba99985 Its an entry port that goes straight into the reservoir.
........Need chock for back tires ,, sailor. OTAY👌🏾👌🏿. LOL. ........LOL .....
NO. Hand brake was on!
Normal metal shavings and the magnets 🧲 do the job.
lol if you pull your dipstick out of the transmission, Your oil will drain smooth without puking lol,,,
Honda manual calls for 3.3qt.
You forgot to replace the crush washer! You should not reuse it!
Once is fine.
@@BulletsGarage I guess so. I am just use to replacing it also every time I do the engine oil. I saw a sheet that says to replace every engine oil change but it did not mention for every transmission oil change
The port for my dipstick is tiny! (LOL great for a woman but not so good on the car!!) I dont know how I'm going to get the fresh fluid in there, at least that's what SHE SAID!
I just did my transmission fluid but can’t get the dame fluid level right it’s measuring to high
The car has to be off and cool when ur checking the level
On the Honda ?
Yes
Ok thanks 1 more question. Do you know if you check both sides of the dipstick or just the one on the back side that says hot on it ?
The one that says hot
I’m a Honda technician and Transmission fluid on these call for 3.3Qts and Oil 4.5Qts it makes me disappointed that you used Honda fluid but not a honda oil filter or oil lol
Why would I pay mark up price for "Honda oil" when it just relabled oil from another oil company
Owen White Why would he need honda engine oil or filter?
He used penzoil which is one of the best oils out there.
You probably be using “honda” brake fluid and “honda” windshield washer too loll
Hhaha and Honda blinker fluid
Bullets Garage lmao i know right
Owen White
You sound like youre still a Honda lube tech. The Honda filters that dealers get in the US are made by fram with cardboard endcaps (take one apart) and are not as good as the wix xp that he used. Honda does have good oil filters though they are made by filtech but US dealers don’t get them anymore. Unless special ordered.
use the damn fill plug!! it's right on top of the transmission. complete facepalm on filling thru the dipstick plug, newb. also, if you crack open the fill plug first, when you pull the drain plug, the fluid will come out far more smooth
