I'm kind of glad Coachella has started live-streaming the whole event because I feel like it refocuses the social media aspect back on the music. It might just be my social media bubble, but this year I saw a lot more videos of the musicians (both from the livestream and on-sight), and people talking about all the acts they saw and reviewing them, which was refreshing. I also think since Beychella, people have been really focused on the fashion and artistry and spectacle of the headliners, more so than influencers, which has also helped refocus the festival on the music. I think some Coachella purists may decry the focus on super popular acts, but that's still music! It's cool to see artists really show out and do something unique for the festival

    • @princessjellyfish98
      @princessjellyfish98 Pƙed 21 dnem +4

@@strawberrylime33 moderngurlz goes a little bit into it in this video but basically Tati was trying to get back at James for promoting a brand that was competing with hers (the hair vitamins), and she brought up some personal issues she'd had with James to justify it. Like was said in the video, James was 20 at the time and Tati was almost 40. Some of her accusations against him included stuff related to his sexuality, and later on people associated this with the very real abuse allegations against him, even though there's not a 1:1 connection. Either way, I'd say exposing someone's SA allegations ONLY in response to them competing with your brand is pretty scummy behavior (and that's not even how they got exposed), especially with the age gap between them. Tati should've known better than to handle the situation like that. But James is such a terrible person that she gets venerated as sort of predicting the future, and no one really critiques her own behavior anymore

So I go every year, I’m a fellow musician and I will admit I get swept up in the fashion aspect of things and I have fun with it. But the utter takeover of the social media spectacle of it all and the flex of what it is to attend for people on instagram- it’s getting cringey. I know several people that only went down to attend parties and never set foot on the festival grounds which is mind boggling to me. Putting a lineup at the forefront that is undeniably star powered and caters to as many genres as makes sense is going to be what puts music back at the focus.

To me, it reflected the golden days of festival culture, where yes you did occasionally care about what you were wearing, but it was also just about enjoying really great artists and being in the moment. In Australia, one of our biggest festivals got cancelled this year which was such a blow for the industry, and mainly due to low-ticket sales. I realise that the past is the past, however I hope that a bit of life can be brought back to the space so that people can continue to have these core memories, just as I did. In the late 2000s, my then-boyfriend used to go to Coachella every year with his sister (who worked in the music industry) & her friends. I remember that I definitely wasn’t too impressed about this; I’d heard of it, but saw it as a kinda niche thing. It wasn’t as ridiculously inescapable as it is now. No influencer culture yet, either
man I miss those days!😭

Great video, I learned some new stuff about coachella that I didn’t know before!! :D
Honestly, I think that the reason people see coachella attendees as strangers who only care about fashion and instagram likes is because chances are, those are the only people on their social media feeds they see there.
Plus, when you think about it, the discourse over rich people showing off their wealth at shows and making the experience about themselves and not The Art has been around for *hundreds* of years. It’s so easy to picture the ladies of 18th century Versailles gossiping all about how la duchesse angelique eclair baguette du fromage was perhaps dressed a little *too* fancy at that Mozart concert on sunday. Why, it’s as though she only cared about people seeing her new robe de polonaise and her 3 foot tall powdered wig! she must not have cared about the music at all, sacre bleu!!!!!!
Actually, to be perfectly honest, I find myself at and near many concerts due to my line of work and one of MY FAVOURITE things to see while walking around near the venue is being able to instantly tell who your people are, because they all have their Little Outfits. For instance, if you have a dress that’s too flashy to wear every day, it can be the perfect thing to wear for a sparkly pop concert! And, where else are you going to wear your fancy boots and your best ten gallon hat but to a country concert? If you’re seeing a my chemical romance concert, everyone knows that you need to be dressed like you’re going to a funeral at the bare minimum, even if you don’t choose to go full goth. Hell, even the old man rock concert goers have a very specific unofficial uniform where they dress as though they don’t care about their outfits at all.
Honestly, I believe that people have their Little Outfits in the first place because they genuinely care about the music, and like any of us, they want to look their best when they go to see their heroes perform, you know?
Yeah coachella is really oversaturated and I definitely understand people being annoyed seeing influencers talk about it all the time, but also. I’m not going to pretend that I WOULDNT take the opportunity to wear a cute little flower crown if I ever got to go to coachella, you dig?

So I used to sell water at Coachella in the early 2000’s before it really blew up and seeing what it has turned into is wild. It’s almost unrecognizable. I’m so glad I had that experience though, the early days were really chill and we used to eat our lunch in the same area as all the bands. Great video as always! It’s very interesting to see Coachella’s evolution over the decades.

A friend of mine who loves fashion went the year Eminem performed. Yeah, she had a few posts of her outfits in front of the iconic backdrops, and she looked great... But, she was also a music major at UCLA, and she now teaches piano and voice lessons - and we met at a latin dance class.
So while yeah, there's a massive component of fashion, social media; I think there's still a massive love of music too!

"didn't want to overcrowd the venue" I'm pretty sure the point of festivals and headliners is to space out people across those few days. So giving people no option to buy single day tickets makes that impossible. Make it make sense.

Agreed with your point it’s the fault of the organizations not the concert goers I also think thanks to social media the lines between underground/alternative music vs mainstream/pop music is blurred artists like Lana del rey, Billie eilish, Tyler the creator etc are proof of that especially when niche/underground music genres like hip hop, urbano, R&B, alternative pop, EDM, etc have overthrown pop music as the dominating sound for the 2020s so far. As a big swiftie I would love to see Taylor perform its surprising she’s never performed there she’s honestly the only artist who can match beycyella if we’re gonna keep it real

As someone who went to EDC for years, the quality of people does change thanks to social media and influencer culture. No one cares if you take a picture at a festival it’s the blatant disrespect for other people’s experience. Same with fitspo gym culture, sorry but I do think influencers do ruin everything. I’ve resorted to festivals out of the country just to avoid the same vibes because a music festival is an investment you want to make sure the experience is good and friendly

I think I would have liked the old vibe of Coachella. Now it’s pretty young which I know is the point and a little to electronica for me. I like to listen to music and zone and enjoy. My vibe isn’t doing Molly and Ketamine. Honest about Coachella I’ll never go so it doesn’t bother me how trendy it is the only thing that irks my a little is how they get everything for free. Airbnb’s clothes tickets it’s annoying and just makes more and more turn up every year. Seems now the people dressed are the influencers, the celebrities are more relaxed and dress more incognito. Don’t blame them

I went to EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival) in 2010 when raves weren’t mainstream. I went for my high school graduation and wasn’t a fan. I hate that electronica music and I never do drugs. But the druggies were nice and I’m glad I wasn’t sweating my ass off like Coachella people are
I wonder if that 44-year-old who didn’t want his teen daughter going had his daughter go anyways.
Palm Springs and that whole area in the 90’s was nice and calm. I live in Orange County and my parents rich friends had a house in Palm Springs (2 hours from OC). We would go stay with their childless friends and I always enjoyed the desert at that time.
My birthday is April 22 and Coachella is always the weekend of or before my bday and I’ve been invited to go but I just don’t want to. I would prob only go to see Pixies, but I don’t think they’re there. And the 2000 Coachella having 32,000 people is a lot. You said “only”, but 32,000 is the size of a small town tbh

I loved this history, but there was one point I'd like to correct; as a teenager I attended Coachella 2005... my ticket was $85 then (pre-fees, it's printed and in a ticket album so I know my ticket price rememberance is correct. The mainstage lineup was indie to pop with exception of Bauhaus. While I adore them now, I'll never forgive the organizers for what happened; hundreds of goths pushing their way forward and me and my friend out of the way; from row 3 we went to row 13, but yeah... the Main Stage line-up for 2005 was Ravonettes > Snow Patrol > Wilco > Weezer > BAUHAUS > Coldplay... WTF.
