  • disney's latest animated movie, wish, just hit theaters and i'm sorry to say that it's been just as disappointing as their last few animated releases despite having a promising premise. in today's video i took a closer look at disney's wish and discussed some of the ways i think it could be improved. what did you think of wish?

I’d even go so far to say Anna makes adorkable work (like Rapunzel and Mirabel) since she grew up alone, but Asha? It makes NO SENSE. She would’ve been the perfect opportunity to make a character that is ambitious and hardworking, meeting a moral dilemma when it comes to recovering the wishes or pursuing the career she wants. Idk, there was so much potential for an interesting, complex character but HEY ANNA, RAPUNZEL, AND MIRABEL ARE CUTE, LETS MAKE HER ONE TOO!

Anna and Rapunzel make sense since they grew up alone, they wouldn't be aware of social norms hence 'quirky'. Mirabel makes sense since she is the outcast of her family...She needs something other than not having a gift to be outcasted. Moana is the case of being a dork in a normal family and internal doubt making her unsure. What does Asha have to make her a dork? NOTHING

i agree that Anna's adorableness makes sense, for the reasons you already mentioned, but it also impacts the plot in a major way. Had she not been so naive adorable bubbly, so shut of from the world, she would have never gotten with Hans. I wasnt too big a fan of mirabel's quirky side tho, I think she was much more compelling whenever she was sad of angry, but it didnt make me go, hey, this doesn't fit here. I just wasn't into it with Mirabel. Honestly, the best thing would just be if Disney could diversify their female protagonists a bit, and be a bit more creative, it doesn't feel like that big of an ask.

I would have been nice but, as mentioned in the video, there aren't enough people working at Walt Disney Animation Studios that could make a traditionally animated picture, almost all of the artists are exclusively CG animators. For things like the Once Upon a Studio special, the 2D animators were practically guest animators since they now work as freelancers. Heck, in Mary Poppins Returns the animated segments were outsourced. Can't imagine Disney outsourcing the production of a 2D feature, their movies have to be made in-house

There was a missed opportunity for the queen to be evil and part of a villain power couple with her husband, but I'd argue that her being good was also something Disney hadn't explored. We've had evil stepmothers marrying good men, but we've never had a villain's spouse forced to realize that the person they wanted to share their life with is not a good person. Here we have a princess who lived happily ever after with her prince, and decades later, all the good in him fizzled out until she had to go against him after he drew a weapon on her for trying to talk him down. This is heartbreaking, this is dramatic, but the movie barely wants to acknowledge her, so it has no impact. Knowing What I Know Now should have been HER song, not the song of a bunch of teenagers with a queen guest appearance. I don't care how cute your ragtag teens are, give her a moment!

Concepts are only as good as their execution. If Wish had executed their concepts really well, no one would really be begging for these old concepts.
I mean, the idea of a king who is slowly driven to villainy by his paranoia and need to cling onto power, driving away his queen as she is tragically forced to watch the man she loved melt away and be replaced with a cruel, villainous shadow of his former self is SICK AS HELL. If they had done this well, I probably would have PREFERRED it over a shallow Disney villain couple.

I know lots of people want to see an evil power couple from Disney, but honestly the concept of a loved one giving into their paranoia, being drained and becoming a shell of their former vibrant self, would be SO HEARTBREAKING to watch.
The fact that the Queen basically went "oh, he can't be saved, he's just going to be evil forever because of that random book we didn't bother burning, so sad, oh well", it just...struck me the wrong way with how easily glossed over the arc was. The love of your life that you built an entire kingdom with...and even if he couldn't saved and that was due to external forces amplifying his paranoia into greed and being "wish thirsty", you don't have ANY sort of feelings of pain, guilt of having to sacriface your own loved one, nothing??
Why was the Queen even needed if she was just there to support Asha and nothing more??

If anything, one positive thing Wish did was make me appreciate Tangled even more. Similarly to Wish, Tangled was also a celebration movie. It was Disney’s 50th animated feature film, and conceptually, it was ALSO similar to Wish. It’s a modern day retelling of a classic fairy tale with plenty of references and allusions to older Disney movies. Except Tangled actually delivered with a good story, memorable characters, a FANTASTIC villain, and great musical numbers.

People had arguments over his statement. He's not entirely wrong that not all wish should be granted, but it also feels like he's overcontrolling the kingdom to the point where people rely too much on him to grant their wish. I haven't watched the movie but seeing the review, I wish Asha's motivation and the whole message of the movie aren't so naive. It would've been better if it's a "be careful what you wished for" type of movie. This seems like a forgettable movie like Raya (literally nobody remembers that movie lol).

    • @Nohandle1125
      @Nohandle1125 Před 5 měsíci +97

I don’t think you paid attention. It wasn’t just that he wasn’t granting each wish. His sorcery removed the desires of the individuals and prevented them pursuing their dreams. Of course not each wish could be granted. However, he could return the wishes, explain why they weren’t being granted, and offered each individual the opportunity to request a wish that didn’t disrupt their society. Also, imagine living your whole life and dying without knowing what your wish was and living with that emptiness for… 100+ years. Each Person who presented a wish to Magnifico was a completely different person from before. And you could make the argument that each citizen gave their wish consensually but they didn’t. They are denied informed consent because Magnifico does not inform them (nor did he intend to) of possibility of their wishes never being granted. If each citizen was fully aware of ALL the stakes of giving him their wishes, they likely wouldn’t.

    • @SonneLittle
      @SonneLittle Před 5 měsíci +106

@@Nohandle1125 I would argue that the citizens of Rosa are kind of at fault for giving away their wishes. At one point, Magnifico said he granted 14 wishes in the past year and I assume it's more or less the number of wishes he grants every year. People know this because he makes a huge celebration out of it so it's not like he hides it. There are people like Saaba (Asha's grandfather) who have spent like 82 years waiting for his wish to come true. Like, people absolutely can infer, by logic, that there is a possibility that their wish could never be granted so it's at their own risk that they give it away.

And I add Rapunzel because the whole "quirky, weird cute girl" thing was actually part of her character and Disney basically turned it into a now unsuccessful formula. i agree with this comment, and like everyone else who replied, i’d also like to add a princess, Belle. i can’t remember a time when she was really quirky, maybe there were one or two times, but those wouldn’t count as part of her personality. i view her as a reserved, introverted bookworm who is really smart and curious about all things. yes, she does resemble the old Disney princesses when it comes to being “royal”, “perfect” and “elegant” at times, but i still think they fleshed out her personality better than the older princesses, where they just wander off into the woods (or somewhere idk) longing for someone to love (i’m not trying to hate on those movies, i just didn’t really take interest in them so maybe i’m wrong). instead, she’s longing for adventure and excitement, and i really found that charming about her. anyway, that’s just my opinion and i agree that the princesses you mentioned deserve to be one that list. 👌

I think Asha should have started secretly granting villagers wishes regardless of their potential impact, to disastrous consequences. When the king found out someone was granting wishes and undermining his power he should have gone crazy ramoaging while Asha had to deal with the consequences of wish granting, how they damaged the kingdom and left people listless since they didnt have to work to achieve anything. This way Asha learns that you can't just grant wishes, but she still believes the people should be allowed to persue their dreams through other means. Also Asha should have been an assistant as a call back to the magicians assistant

The animation style and character designs are so disappointing. Disney noticed the trend of mixing 3D with more stylistic 2D elements (Spiderverse, Puss: The Last Wish) but instead of going all out, it’s like they were afraid to take risks and only did it half-heartedly, and instead of looking like a beautiful, cinematic film Disney is known for in their animation (both 2D and 3D), it ends up in a weird middle ground and looks more like a decent budget Sofia the First special. Nearly all the 3D Princess films look better, Rapunzel was first way back in 2009 and looks so, so much nicer with brighter colors, beautiful cinematography, iconic character designs, etc.
Asha and every other supporting character look so plain and blend into the background looking like default designs, and it doesn’t help that the similar facial features, dark hip-length hair, and purple dress make Asha look like a bad knock off of Isabela from Encanto (who still has a much better design and still stands out from such a big, colorful and unique cast). Asha herself doesn’t stand out either, all of the recent Disney princesses, whether they were well written or not, still had very distinct designs that take inspired from the cultures they’re inspired by (Moana with Polynesian inspired elements, and Raya taking inspiration from Southeast Asia). Asha’s outfit? A purple dress, vaguely resembling old Spanish (?) dresses, I’m not totally sure. No distinct colors as they’re all just close shades of the same purple making the dress not stand out and look plain, and a boring silhouette. I like the locs of her hair, but I’m sure they could’ve done it just a tad less simple? Overall, I think Wish had a lot of potential, but in rushing to do something without truly understanding what could’ve made it special, it falls flat (literally) and is quite a disappointment.

The original ideas and concept art for this movie (2D, Star being a mute shape shifter, an evil queen AND king), and even the ideas she brings up in this video (too many side characters with little to no development, and extra talking animal, the King not being overly evil enough or playing into his backstory enough, Asha not being enough of her own character and how she could have already been working as an apprentice, and a better soundtrack) could have made this a real enjoyable watch.

@@leonardobazail8740 oh yeah, sometimes you need a second party to reign in ideas and structure things so they need to make more sense, but lately (when comparing of what COULD have been in these newer Disney movies) Disney has been overly involved, overly cautious, and very safe…or bland…
For example, a lot of deleted scenes and ideas from Frozen II would have made it a darker/more serious story REALLY digging into Elsa and Anna’s family history with the Northuldra (also, the amazing song: “Get this Right” was cut and it is a CRIME). Also, just watching some episodes from The Making of Frozen 2 had me so livid with the amount of interference and disorganization behind the scenes at Disney, it surprises me that they are even able to create a few movies that I like (since Moana, I have liked Encanto and Strange Word-as it gives me Atlantis/adventure comic vibes and I love that).

So long black hair with a side part and swung to one side, light purple-ish long dress and tan skin 🤷‍♀️ The dress also is indeed nearly identical to Rapunzels. To me, already during the trailers, this gave off an incredibly lazy vibe where the main character seemed to be an amalgamation of previous designs with nothing new or unique. This made me from the start already dis-interested in the movie 🤷‍♀️ Now that the reviews are confirming the meh-ness of the film, I will probably just watch it on Disney+ and definately not pay for a cinema ticket.

Let's not introduce a romantic subplot because it can be problematic for modern audiences (even if Disney gold era have a ton of nice and competent romances.) If I'm the editor, I'd turn the king into a paranoid man & show a glimpse of his past & what led to him removing people's wishes. The king truly has a point that a wish is dangerous. They could've shown some people's wishes hurting others, becoming evil, etc. Since the king's wish is to protect his family & didn't want to repeat the tragic past, the king used the forbidden magical book. This, however, did not corrupt him. Instead, it corrupted the soul of the person he cared the most.
As for Asha, I would've written her as someone who is socially awkward if they want to stick with the boring side characters who are not really nice friends to her. But even though she is socially awkward, she wished to become a guiding star for those who are around her. As she manifested that glorified fairy-like power, she became much more matured & powerful. She guides the king & corrected him just like how she aimed to become the king's assistant (I'd rather not do the apprentice thing). In the end, they beat the queen's evil self & the king cried, bowed & said sorry to the queen. The lesson is that we all have something that we are afraid of. Thus, we do things that we thought would be best for us & for people around us. But it wasn't. We ended up hurting the people we love the most. But there will always be a friend like Asha who will guide you to the right path so long as you embrace such help.

The reason why I think the young “adorkable” protagonist is so popular now? Because it’s the most palatable “flaw” to movie-goers (initially) tolerated/liked in a young person/teen character
What do I mean by this? Well, I commented something similar on Aldone’s video, but screw it. Whenever you look at irl young people and even past Disney leads, they’ll often exhibit traits such as being temperamental, selfish, gullible, salty, rebellious, and dishonest. But that’s okay because A) We’re not perfect, and our fiction reflects that B) The leads need to have flaws in order to have arcs and dynamics anyways
However, while most audience members usually appreciate this sort of character writing, it’s not going to connect with anyone. I’ve seen parents dismiss Disney protags like Ariel, Merida, & Cinderella for being “disobedient” and “a doormat,” complaining about how their kids will apparently emulate these sorts of bad behaviors. Anyone remember that Twitter/X drama where the Mystery Skull creator went on a rant about how Lilo was a horrible brat? Because they found her annoying in their SUBJECTIVE opinion
So those flaws are undesirable and potentially make you unlikable. However, as ModernGurlz pointed out in the Adorkable video, the quirky, quipy, dorky female protagonist who doles out that MCU meta-humor, is (or now was) acceptable in the eyes of executives and audience members. Because those flaws of awkwardness and lacking social cues were turned into endearing, positive, traits, despite ostensibly giving the Disney female leads a unique flaw/personality
Well that might have worked during the early 2010s, but we live in a post Joss Whedon world where every character has to either be a self-aware snarker or a self-aware adorkable geek, it’s not really “unique” anymore Disney

It’s a clever method Disney, up until this point, has perfected. Having your cake and eating it too
Disney can say that they’re correcting for the past mistakes of princesses/female leads not having a relatable/realistic/unique personality for young girls to look up to (Meaning: replacing poise & grace w/ a HEAVY dose of klutzy slapstick & “well that just happened” quippy humor)
While simultaneously not having to commit to any of their female leads’ intentional character flaws causing consequences or story impact (ie. Tiana’s workaholic tendencies, Merida’s temper, Snow White’s naiveté), with the risk of causing a portion of the audience (no matter how small) to dislike them for it as people, not as characters

Disney was mine along with many people's first exposer to real and genuine TRUE LOVE. I still hold that standard for if I ever am in a relationship. and it's just so heartbreaking to me that kids won't get that in newer movies. long live Disney's classic princess movies, which died with Frozen. So sad :/

@@gabslovestayI think instead of getting rid of princes entirely, Disney could have princes who are friends to the protagonist, or let your female protagonists have their romantic princes AND still be strong. Belle, Mulan, Meg, Esmeralda, and Jasmine were all strong women who didn't need romance, they CHOSE it. They were strong and smart and they chose to fall in love with their princes/love interests, and that's a strong feminist message too. You don't need a partner, but if they treat you well, make you happy, and encourage you to be a better person, there's nothing wrong with falling in love and being romantic

IT BOTHERS ME TOO. I think Disney Executives believe that because their new princesses are badass and girlboss they don't need a romantic interest anymore, when the entire company was founded and recognized by their romantic aesthetic and storylines (Snow White)
The last princess film with an interesting romantic partner that had an amazing chemistry with the female lead was Tangled. I don't count Frozen since they obviously sidelined Kristoff (specially in the second film) and the main focus are Anna and Elsa's relationship.

I think part of the problem is that Disney doesn’t understand why their past romances in movies were critiqued. Not having a love interest doesn’t make their female protagonists more independent and instead they are failing to use their platform to portray healthier romantic relationships.

Magnifico should’ve gotten a redemption arc, honestly. He didn’t start off evil, and his corruption came from a place of fear. If Asha and his wife were able to pull him out of that, it could’ve been a love conquers all AND a you don’t need to rely on magic for your dreams compounded message. I agree Asha and the side characters needed more development, and with some extra dialogue, it wouldn’t even have to extend the film’s runtime. This is the thanks I get was a banger though. When I watched the trailer, I could already see all the signs of awkward humor and redundant side characters, and that killed any interest I had in seeing it. But even from the trailer I'd thought Asha was already the king's apprentice, because I literally couldn't imagine why else she'd be welcomed into his inner sanctum and told such a huge secret. And can we talk about how depressing it is that even in a magical world with literal wish fulfillment, job interviews still exist? A reminder of corporate capitalism is the last thing I want in my fantastical adventure story, but clearly the execs at Disney don't get that.

Disney is going to keep hurting financially if they keep releasing sub par movies. I think Wish has a REALLY interesting first act. The lore of the world, Magnifico's complicated relationship with wishes, Asha as someone who looks up to him and has total faith in that system - all of that is a great setup. The fact that Magnifico's fear is grounded in reality need not be a bad thing, it could make for a more nuanced story where the protagonist and antagonist need to find an understanding. And no, that doesn't *have* to be the same as something like the "generational trauma stories" of Encanto or Turning Red. There are many ways to write complex characters and situations. You can even have them fail to find that understanding, and end up as enemies. Maybe in the end, Magnifico is too afraid of change to ever give up power, but he can still be sympathetic, and his fears can be realistic. Just build up their relationship more, then frame that as a tragedy or at least bittersweet rather than a simple triumph. That could work great with your idea of Asha already being the apprentice with a father figure-like relationship to Magnifico.

It's like the people making it don't even know what they're trying to make, or worse, they had a great idea (which they did) and had to condense it because of Disney execs telling the writers and animators that they need to follow the Disney princess formula because it sells. If I had one to make, my wish would be that those execs get fired and Disney remakes this movie (which had too much potential to be such a miss) with the original scrapped ideas.

Disney made a second movie starting a black girl lead, one where she doesn’t get turn into an animal, but doesn’t give her a real personality nor good motivation in a movie with that was just made to make references of past Disney films rather than tell it own story. They should had made the star into a shape shifting star boy as depicted in the concept art. So what if it reminds people of genie? That much better than just putting in references. At least I’m seeing people make their own version of wish following the original concept. Especially ones where they ship her with the star boy because you don’t get to see black girls in popular pairings often.

Hear me out. I had a theory early on (more what I wanted than what I expected) that Magnifico was either half or whole star. Since they are/were shapeshifters it could work. Then instead do going full camp villain you instead have two forces who are actually on the exact same page but on opposing sides.
Star is following Asha because she made a wish that brought him to earth, but that doesn't change the fact that stars can not grant everywish that is offered to them. Magnifico can then be desperatly trying to stop Asha from doing something stupid. Like granting wishes that sound good on paper but functionally not so much. Maybe if they still wanna go crazy evil, he pushes himself past his limits to stop what he thinks could be a disaster and goes nuts. Now armed with a bit of introspection Asha can still face off against a mad king, but this time in an act to make up for her recklessness. Then you have sequel bait where Asha now has to take care of all the magic stuff in Rosas while also looking for a way to fix Magnifico's brain.
Magnifico doesn't have to be perfect, he can still be a narcissist who jumps to anger way too quickly but as long as his main goal is to protect his kingdom no matter what, he stays out of the pure evil category. Have his wife established as the one to rein him in, then show her mourning his insanity after everything goes down but refusing to give up on him or the kingdom they built together.

To be fair, she doesn't have to be amazing at everything, she just has to stand out in some way. You covered my first idea in the video, suggesting that she has a talent for magic. Make the Sorceror's plan for all the unfulfilled wishes feel more like a personal attack against Asha. How could they skip on a villain couple! It's disappointing for many many reasons. Anyway, I'm going to go rewatch Tangled✌🏾

Yeaa it feels like they couldn’t decide on what Magnifico should be. Like they weren’t sure if he should be a sympathetic character or just evil like Maleficent. They also didn’t seem sure if they wanted him to be controlling since he supposedly only allows himself as the sole person using magic and hoards wishes but then he doesn’t seem to impose strict rules on the people of Rosa (at least nothing we see imposed like in Duloc from Shrek).

If they'd made more of his past trauma, and gotten rid of the "there's no saving him now" angle, we could have seen how a Disney villain ended up a Disney villain--and how he found his way back again.

Btw “ protect you at all costs” is actually kind of a love song, just watered down because they changed the scenario in which it’s sang
The original was supposed to be for star-boy and Asha, when they show the first flicker of romance!
    Or something like that

I have so many thoughts about this movie: The music felt like repurposed scrapped projects for other contemporary artists, which gives some story moments really awkward tone due to that music. You nailed it yourself when you mentioned the duet felt more like a love ballad.
The biggest music offender in my opinion is Knowing What I Know Now: from afar it looks like an overblown reaction to criticism from someone who's been in the field longer, not as an actual stand against a tyrant. It has "giving opinions too early into your new job" energy
Also, this movie could have been such an excellent commentary on goals versus reality: there are a lot of people who can relate to working towards something, but felt frustrated about the reality of what it takes. This is common for people who go to college to pursue one profession, only to end up doing something else. It would have been such a powerful message to say that changing your destination mid-flight doesn't mean you failed: It's okay to pursue a new dream. Asha learning how wishes are handled would have been perfect for setting up this plot point

If Asha joins the official Disney Princess lineup, I’m going to be LIVID!!!! She has done literally 0 work to get to where she got by the end of the film, unlike Mulan who LITERALLY SAVED AN ENTIRE COUNTRY, but also because the movie is SO BAD!!

Asha isn't a princess. Disney just made a princess movie without a princess. that is stupid beyond reason.

@@jennah5990 It will probably be released on there in either a month or 2. But if you can, pls go see it in theaters. It is such a magical film and imo is being straight up slandered by "critics" which is why I mostly believe it is flopping at the box office

I wish her personality was more like belle and Tiana. And also maybe she can admit she was wrong in some parts of her argument. It'll be nice to see a main character to admit faults or meet the supposed villain in the middle.
