MT-82 vs Tremec T56 Magnum XL Review

  • In this review, I compare the Tremec T56 Magnum XL transmission against the stock Mustang GT MT-82.
    The Tremec T56 Magnum XL is installed in the car during every part of this review along with an MGW Shifter.
    Mated to the transmission is the McLeod RST Twin Disk Clutch with 26 spline disks to accommodate the larger input shaft. A One-piece Dynotech Aluminium Driveshaft is also installed.
    Car is also boosted and has 760 HP with a shit ton of suspension modifications.
    I touch on the speedo box install to re-calibrate miles per hour. However, you don't need an Abbott Box or Dakota Box if you have a good tuner. Like Alex Flores at VMP or Ken Bjonnes at Palm Beach Dyno.
    Tires in the video are Mickey Thompson Street SS.

    Back in 1998-2002 the T-56 came in the old Camaro’s making an under rated 300 hp. When I did heads in cam in mine, I went to 3.90’s. It made 420 rwhp but not major hp. The T-56 is a tank and even if you gotta go 4.10’s it’s worth it!

    From my experience, the problems with lock out can be attributed to the clutch more than anything else.

      I agree. However, I still had lockout after I installed the McLeod RST. It wasn't near as bad, but it was still present at 7k and up shifts. It went away with the Barton and the trans mount insert.

      Christopher Lee Hey what company did you buy T56magnum complete kit from. Sliver State Transmission offers complete kit for conversion for around $5k plus. They have 36 month warranty and free shipping no tax. My pos MT82 broke for the 4th time and my dealer wont cover it again cause past warranty period. I run about 600wheel pump gas with 28in drag radials and 90/10 shocks up front. Ain't spending $2500 for MT82 rebuild when it will break again. My input shaft bearing, seal and 3rd gear synchro shot after only 2 years hard street driving.

Installing the trans brace bushing when it shows up as added security. The Magnum XL is not a T56. It’s a modified TR6060 from Tremec.

    • @MindHoudini
      @MindHoudini  Před 6 lety +1

      True, it's not a T56. However, that's the aftermarket marketing used by many dealers. Tremec is trying to get away from calling it a T56, but that's what most people know it as. Even though it's not technically correct. But there are big differences between the TR6060 and the Magnum XL.The important difference between the TR-6060 and the Magnum is the TR-6060 uses a remote shifter configuration like what we talked about earlier, to keep NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) concerns to a minimum for manufacturers. The TR-6060 also has an integral bellhousing, cast into the front of the transmission. The Magnum has a conventional bellhousing. The Magnum also uses a slip-yoke 31-spline tailshaft configuration, which is more desirable from a strength and weight standpoint. The TR-6060 uses a bolt on yoke.

    • @happyness5293
      @happyness5293 Před 5 lety

      I know this is an old post, but in reply to you question. I have a twin turbo 850rwhp in a Boss with 3.73 gears, I just ordered a 2.66 T56. I'd rather change the gear in the back to bring the rpm up, in 1st gear than to have the 2.95 ratio 1st gear with the wider ratio gears to follow, or a 1-1 4th gear with a 3.23 rear gear. The 2.66 has closer ratio between 2-3-4th gears than the 2.95, making for less rpm drop between shifts. I believe the overdrive in both 2.66 and 2.95 are now with the higher ratio's, and are the same. Higher rear gear ratio with the 2.66 vs lower rear gear ratio with the 2.95, gives the 2.66 T56 more power(higher RPM) in 4th gear and the overdrive modes. I guess it's all down to preference, and how you plan to drive your car. Personally, I am not worried about rpm in 4th gear through Traps. My preference is for on the road drive-ability, especially if you have a power adder, for me the 2.66 with the correct gear in the back, will make the entire experience that much better. Either way the Freakn, Mt82, is like a truck trans with a granny gear.

    I'm planning on procharging my 3.7 Mustang later this year, my mt82 is starting to go to shit soon as it tends to stick in 4th gear, taking some effort to get out of it. Considering the cost of having the getrag rebuilt with upgraded internals, replacing the driveshaft and all the crap that comes along with handling 200hp over stock, is it more worthwhile to say fuck it, put a Magnum XL in it? The car is paid off anyways and I plan on keeping it for a long time so that may ease the price shock.

      Torque and driveline shock destroy components, horsepower is much more insignificant. That said, memory tells me the MT82 is only rated for something like 383 ft/lbs, it's already under-matched for stock 5.0 power. Go easy on launches, don't use sticky tires, don't add significant power, don't install an aggressive clutch, match your revs well, and the MT82 will last awhile.

      Matt dude, 100% stay away from the RXT. Don't dump the clutch. Rev match.

      fernandizo no, it's not. but it can handle that power.

      so I'm confused, are you saying Getrag is incorrect in their assessment on torque for their transmission?
      yes, it will take some abuse, but all mentioned above are guaranteed ways of the MT82 meeting fate.

      Matt there are guys running 650hp 5.0 on the Mt82 on the forums (thats more than I would think to put on that trans). and they havent broken it yet.. I think the issues is with power shifters. If you rev match your gonna be good 90% of the time. I have a 15 GT pushing 450hp to the wheels on intake throttle body headers exhaust and tune on 93octane and ive had 0 issues. and I drive that shit pretty hard.

    I thinks it's the crappy clutch . My buddy changed his clutch and there's no more lock out at 7k rpm. I wouldn't dare power shift my mt82. It would break so easy. The shift forks are very weak.

    • @MindHoudini
      @MindHoudini  Před 5 lety

      The new ones are even worse. Yolo blew his second gear shift fork on camera in his 2018. WTF

    Mt82 is also double O/D. That's how 5.0's avoided a gas guzzler tax

      5th gear is 1:1 and 6th is overdrive. The T56 Magnum XL is double overdrive. 4th is 1:1.

    I don't understand vloggers. I waited through two minutes of obnoxious music and just...BS...with no meaningful content....before I gave up and turned it off. Do you think viewers WANT to have their time wasted with a low signal/noise ratio? Not just this channel....many many CZcamsrs do the same. I don't get it.
