- Launch and recovery of AS-201, the first flight of the Block I Apollo command and service module and the Saturn IB launch vehicle.
Research, cleanup and audio/image processing by Retro Space HD.
AS-201 (or SA-201), flown February 26, 1966, was the first uncrewed test flight of an entire production Block I Apollo command and service module and the Saturn IB launch vehicle. The spacecraft consisted of the second Block I command module and the first Block I service module. The suborbital flight was a partially successful demonstration of the service propulsion system and the reaction control systems of both modules, and successfully demonstrated the capability of the command module's heat shield to survive re-entry from low Earth orbit.

Earlier that day, Astronauts Elliot See and Charles Bassett II were killed when their T-38 jet slammed into the roof of McDonnell Aircraft near Lambert Field. The accident elevated Astronauts Tom Stafford and Eugene Cernan to the prime crew for the Gemini IX mission.
What a beautiful shot of staging there!
great vid showing all aspects and history of the vehicle - well done. not seen before video!
It's an original video. Of course the images come from NASA documentaries and archive sources, but the editing is original.
The capsule used on this flight is now on display at the SAC Museum in Nebraska
And used to be outside of Morril Hall in Lincoln
Fun fact: I was conceived at Offutt AFB. My old man was stationed with SAC and my mom lived with him in on-base housing.
that's a good launch.
This mission should've been designated Apollo 1 after it was launched.
It all starts somewhere
Loved the video, what was the music in the background?
It's "Please" by Wayne Jones from CZcams's music library.
@@RetroSpaceHD thanks mate, have a good day.
So the S-IV B was never fired here?
It was, at around 1:30 There's even an onboard view of staging.

Staging
That poor Block 1 model would result in one of the worst catastrophes in NASA history.
The overdubbed music ruined the video
Point taken. Some videos have music, others don't. Depends on personal preference.
@@RetroSpaceHD thanks for the honest reply the 200 series rockets have the least about them... I want to hear the officials-the coundown-rocket sound... and the technicians ...I got to see SpaceX Falcon heavy July 2019 loved it
