Hack Windows 10 & Download HEVC Codec FREE TechTip 👨💻

- ⚠️ IMPORTANT UPDATE: PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ⚠️
I would like to inform you that Microsoft has recently decided to discontinue the availability of the free version of the codec on the Microsoft Store. This decision comes after several years of being aware of my video, during which they finally realized the reason behind the declining popularity of the codec. It's quite amusing, isn't it? 🤣
However, this development should not cause significant distress, as there are alternative options to fulfill your video playback needs. One highly recommended solution is to download Video Lan Media Player (VLC), a versatile media player that offers a wide range of built-in adaptive codecs. Whether you're dealing with cutting-edge formats or obscure vintage files, VLC has got you covered 😈. To ensure a secure download, make sure to visit the official website at www.videolan.org/vlc/. Additionally, if you possess an RTX card from Nvidia, you can take advantage of VLC's support for Nvidia's AI upscaling feature 👍.
Nonetheless, if your intention is to obtain codecs that allow you to use any media player of your choice, I suggest installing the K-LITE codec pack, available for download at codecguide.com/download_kl.htm. With this pack, you can customize your selection according to your preferences, starting from the standard pack containing commonly used codecs, all the way up to the ultimate pack, encompassing a vast array of codecs you could ever imagine.

Windows 10 HEVC H.265 Video Codec Now Costs $1 on Microsoft Store but with this Hack you can get it for FREE by going directly to the hidden MS Store PC Builder link that provides the same exact codec for free. This codec shipped with Windows 10 originally but was later removed by Microsoft hoping they could get you to buy it back. Shame on you Microsoft for scamming your loyal Windows users 😡

It still takes me to the MS Store but they lie and tell me that the app won't work on my device. I'm actually having issues with HEVC while trying to do video editing with Pinnacle Studio 26. Any suggestions?

Any other useful apps / codecs / fronts, etc. we can get for free via the "from Device Manufacturer" store? Thanks for the tip.
Free HEVC needs a code in 2020. This video no longer valid without it.

So, Microsoft can remove any feature of the OS any time they feel like it, and then charge you to get it back?
Sounds pretty shady.
Hey Barnacules,
I hope you see this message, I'm the manager for a computer and phone repair store. I just so happen to get a new toy of a laser machine made for removing the rear glass of the new iPhones. Apple decided they wanted to use heat resistant glue so you cannot simply heat the back off for removal, like you can with androids. I would absolutely love to fix that cracked back for you! I've followed you for years and since you provided so much information to me that I'd love to give something back! I'll cover all repair and shipping cost if you are interested.
I can confirm this. The laser machine, mixed with replacement back glass that has a larger hole for the rear camera is the cheapest method for replacing it.
I have done several by hand with a heat gun, the heated plate method at 250 C°, the laser machine, and full frame swaps.
I personally liked the frame swaps like they do at Apple as it is easier to reseal the phone but for cheaper the laser machine does great.
Good guy Rendaime. Hope B sees this :)
So this is windows microtransactions begins.
Please Jerry be back for good this time. I need you in my life man. I need that dirty, funny chill talk you give me. Makes me happy.
I'll do my best Billy!
You're a lifesaver Jerry. They literally ripped HEVC out to sell it back literally to nickel and dime us. Nice to know there's a workaround 👌
thanks again, love having you back and making vids like these. Keep it up man!
I wish people wouldn't get so upset when I re-share some old videos when they are so helpful to new people that didn't see them the last time I shared them. I wish people would think more globally and not so much just from a single perspective. I get that it's hard though! I'm glad I could save so many of you $1.
This really helped me a lot! Thanks!
I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft pulls this from the store by the end of the week.
If they do I'm going to just change the link to a 3rd party site to grab a free codec.
Thank you Jerry! Happy to see you making videos again.
I missed your videos. I haven't been recommended them in a very long time, many months even thought I used to watch your videos regularly. Good to see your videos again since it was recommended.
i spent an hour and a half downloading stuff for fixes and this one solved all my problems a little under a year later. THANK YOU!
Microsoft is giving a even better reason to switch to VLC.
Thanks for the tip Jerry! Already have it installed! You literally paid for my patreon sub this month :)
Thanks for being a Patron sir!
Never seen your channel before, not sure how or why you popped up in my recommendations but I'm bloody glad you did. Very informative and definitely entertaining. Great fun.

Wow, Imagine having to pay for a video codec, on an OS that you *BOUGHT*, that also installs random *3rd party* crap on your system, without asking your permission, shows advertisements, and collects your data, with virtually no way to turn it off.
Hey Barnacules. Thank you so much for this. My laptop suddenly asked for this code after formatting and I don't know what to do. Fortunately, I saw your video and it fixed it.
I'm in the UK and tried your link and it asked me to connect to the UK store, which I did and got the download link and IT WAS FREE !!
So downloaded and installed and hey presto all working. Thanks for highlighting this MS omission.
apparently this no longer works....it asks for you to redeem a code now, so it appears you have to pay?
Another thing Microsoft done is remove 5.1audio output from some hardware. I can't enable 5.1 audio out on the optical out on my MSI X470 Gaming plus. I can't enable 7.1 audio on my TurtleBeach Z260 either. Until Windows 10 1903 I was able to enable 7.1 audio on my headset but the option is no longer there.
I tried different drivers for my motherboard audio but I can't enable 5.1 audio on the sound out. Its just showing stereo out when I select configure audio.
That's bizarre, I'm still able to get 5.1 working with a Realtek chip
@@RaaynML I have 5.1 audio using the audio jacks but not the optical out. I use optical because it gives better audio out.
@@citycultivator2101 My original post said it was removed from "SOME" hardware. I did not say all hardware. I had DTS and SOLBY Digital Live with my old Asus Xonar II soundcard with 1903 too but thats a PCI card and my new motherboard doesn't have any PCI slots
I just subscribed to your channel while laughing LMAO. I was one of the probably many that actually paid the 99 cents. Thanks for the great video and keep them coming.
Thank you so much, I thought I lost all the videos I recorded with my Galaxy S10 that I had to switch the HE off. Great video.
Not any more now you must sign in and buy it or provide a 25 character code to get it
Is there any way to make an offline backup of the codec install file from the microsoft store?.
hi Barnacules, I have been watching your videos for a long time and I was wondering if you could do more programming videos. I really liked the Codegasm vids
Good to see you back in action, J. I loathe Windows but still got a kick out of this one. Future video topic: Raspberry Pi 4 has a single lane PCIe to facilitate USB 3.0 but some clever souls have ripped off the VL805 chip to access the PCIe connections underneath and wire in a real PCIe slot externally. I wanna see your take on that. Do you think there could be a third party mod soon where the PCIe channel is brought out but leave the VL805 intact?
Video actually starts at 8:00
I definitely had H.265 back when I was trying to upgrade my HTPC to 4K Blurays. The PC uses my old parts from 2009 and the copy protection made everything useless so it wasn't as simple as a GFX upgrade. Anyway I got a standalone player so I have no idea if I still have H.265, I'd better check because I'd like to incorporate 4k playback back in at some point. Thanks for pointing this out.
You're very welcome, spread the word!
Dude this actually worked! thank you so much I video a lot on my iPhone XR and it gets annoying when I can't either upload them or can't see em or open em up & now seeing this not only did I not pay that dollar I got it for free! thanks bro! now I can video tape and upload as much as I want!
DUDE this was so good haha you saved me, videos are pretty good man, keep it up.
I did not pay for the movie, what makes them think I would pay for a codec.
didnt need it when i saw it, now that i do, cant download it
middle finger to microsoft
I just did it! it worked for me! :) Many Thanks! Friendly suggestion! make videos shorter and straight forward. THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE! Ended up subscribing to your channel!
Great video Jerry! Noticed you're using a Sony camcorder. What model is that? Really like your video quality and am planning to upgrade the camera I use for me own channel!
Microsoft had found this out and changed it to "redeem with code". Which I didn't expect them to catch on.
I blame Barnacle Boy.
@@Mario583a I doubt that he would do that on purpose. But I guess it took a while for Microsoft to find that out.
Mhh.. I'll guess i'll stick with VLC Media Player then
@@punch3n3ergy37 I was fortunate of getting one.
if you didn't get it before the change than no you wont be able to get it for free since i was one of the lucky people to that where i dont have to pay for it
HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer is currently not available.
OMG!!! It worked Ilysm!! Lots of love and prayers!!
I want to give you a BIG THANK YOU!!! To say I was irritated would be an understatement when I could not view my videos from our vacation. I will share your site with family and friends!
Dude please, you're a smart guy, surely you know apple doesn't support repairing devices, they'll tell you that you need a new frame, logic board and digitizer, that's what they do. Check out Louis Rossman on CZcams
VLC, Klite, CCCP, default app ?! people still use those? use MPV
and add:
vd-lavc-dr=yes
vd-lavc-threads=16
profile=gpu-hq
to the config file
I ♥ this comment since you're the first person to show the configuration changes to get MPV to utilize hardware acceleration and multiple threads which isn't on by default. That being said though it still won't do HDR or Dolby Atmos.
cheers mate works like a charm , spend 2 days searching how to fix it you managed to do it in 2 mins
HA! What a coincidence! I was prompted to buy the codec yesterday, while editing on my new setup, but I did not buy it. Just got it via your link now:) Rendertime went from 3 minutes down to 1 minute on that clip I was working on!
mine is not installing, just keep on downloading for a very long time now :( what to do?

1$ Saved from me!! Thanks!! :) Also I noticed that Premiere Pro was very sluggish to work with h.265 files, where my CPU would freeze on 100% just waiting for the timeline to scrub... This continued, though, even after installing the codec, even on FHD files ( I don't know why they were in h.265 to begin with, just a client sent them)
have been looking for this video for a while now thank god I found it again!! also Thanks for the help you just gained a sub

OMG I'm glad I saw your video, this helped me a lot. Even if I tried to pay .99 cents to Microsoft it won't allow me because I am not from the US. I subs and liked your channel now.
I sometime skip long video and this one I watched full. Thanks for this. I was looking for a very good solution and this video really helped.
just use our old traffic cone friend, VLC. It's made from a country where it isn't illegal to distribute decoders, and, although they say that you are supposed to pay to the people before playing any H265 content, you can just kind of ignore that one entry in their manual page. lol
VLC is amazing and even linked in the video description. However, the built in codec supports HDR which I use down stairs playing back stuff on the Windows Store netflix app and the Movies & TV app and plus it heavily utilizes the GPU which I found VLC was a bit more CPU heavy out of the box. But it's still amazing and I recommend it to anyone that can't figure out what codec they need. I would stay away from the K-Lite codec packs though, they tend to drag down performance and cause issues with Explorer when generating thumbnails.
Architector #4 I still use vlc to this day for my video files and as my dvd player if I choose to.
@@Barnacules
I have no issues using any version of MPC including K-Lite Codecs. Not sure what you mean by drag down performance, since it's the fastest video player i've found (only one that can play back 1080p HEVC videos on a celeron laptop smoothly, VLC cannot on the same machine and video)
Wait people need to download it? doesn't vlc come with it included?;
Yo, thanks! This video sure is helpful and entertaining at the same time! Subscribed!!!

On the one hand, I think it's stupid that companies put glass backs on the back of their phones. On the other hand, don't feel sorry for anyone who doesn't put their phone in a case.
i like my phone without a case. why make it thinner if you stick a 3mm case to it? often you can't even see the back of the phone, considering how flashy they are making them nowadays

why is it that I've only just now found your channel?!
btw, I love your setup...
Windows must be smart to this. All I can see is "HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer is currently not available", and "redeem a code"

Oh man you are a genious!
I can now watch 4k content on my gtx970 that has hybrid support for h265
Thank you man!!
You don't need this codec probably ever. Just install LAV or any half decent video player: PotPlayer, MPC-BE (-HC), ... these either come with bundled LAV or ffmpeg in them or you can reconfigure them to use what ever codec you want, such as LAV, these support any CPU and GPU for software and hardware decoding of up to 8k HDR 60fps VP9 even if your hardware decoder supports it or your CPU is monstrous to deal with that. VLC is meh, never was good and has it's endless quirks and issues. There are other free players with decent hardware acceleration built in but they tend to be "simple", mpv etc. This M$ crap HEVC codec supposedly doesn't support even 10 bit LOL, who the hell records HEVC in 8 bit? Even AVC was 10bit for good encodes. Movie & TV, worthless as is this codec when compared to other options that are free and have been around for over a decade now. Unlike old times you don't need to bother installing 3 different codec packs to get it all, now you install one video player or one codec (LAV for example) and they do it all including latest HW accelerations for as many codecs as possible, with selection of how much you want HW accelerated even.

Cool vid. Thanks dude. What is your main camera? Please do setup video.
That’s actually pretty disgusting of Microsoft to do. It was already shipped with Windows 10 to begin with. Why remove it and force us to pay a dollar to get it back. I know it’s not that big of a deal, with it being one dollar, but my gosh, this is just a shady business practice. HEVC is the way of the future for videography! 😄
You know... with Windows 10 beeing "free" ? (is it still?)
It is likely they remove more stuff from time to time, that you need to download, either bundled with an app or standalone, and... You need to pay everytime.
//My opinion!
