This new version of Windows 10 restricts the user to only apps installed through the Microsoft Store and imposes other limitations like only being able to use EDGE as your default browser and you're forced to use BING as your search engine. Let's explore why this is wrong and what they are really trying to do which is to reboot Windows RT and force people to use only their services and approved software.

Bottom line on all of this, this is MS's way of trying to keep Windows relevant and their cash cow. This started way back with the birth of the internet, and the fact that a lot of people were no longer going to the store and buying physical copies of Windows/MS software; I look at this the same way I look at their service agreements for the older versions of Windows. Working in tech support for several years (H&R Block, Sprint), I saw plenty of offices that wouldn't upgrade, both because of cost, and the hassle of learning new steps for doing the same thing that they could do with the older systems. If MS wants to kill Windows off, this is a good way of doing it.
I'm one step closer to start using Linux.
It's not buggy dude.It really depends on what you use it for.Linux is great for consuming content(browsing,games available for linux via steam and open-source games,videos,music,images),great for programming , great for DIY projects , great for servers.Linux is bad for content creation at the moment, but it gets better every year. It can be buggy if you use apps via wine but I usually find it very stable for native apps.

A friend of mine needed a new pc, she just browses Internet, and write something down... I've built up a cheap, low-power pc and installed Ubuntu on it. After 2 months she's pretty enjoying it.
No continuous restarts, no viruses, no other harassment. And it's free (money) and free (open).

Any student should probably do that anyway with any school-issued laptop. The case: Robbins vs Lower Merion School District, centered around school district employees remotely turning on the cameras of school issued laptops and snapping a few hundred-thousand pics of kids at home using the covert remote-surveillance program included in the theft-protection software suite the school district installed on the Macbooks issued to students.

Edge is actually better for laptops as it conserves more battery power - plus it's almost as fast as Chrome, you can check out speed comparisons..

+Brian Bass My biggest problem with Edge is the interface. It's just personal preference I like my interface in a certain way so I can navigate my screen faster. I can operate chrome without looking at my screen since my common activities are basically habit at this point. I don't have anything against people using Edge, but personally I'd rather use Chrome.

SEP is actually quite lightweight in my opinion, since I am running it right now on a HP Compaq with 1,5GHz Pentium M and 768MB of RAM, and it uses only 98MB of RAM (reduced size definitions).
It's not invasive and harsh in my opinion, once you have set it up the way you want it it just does what you want it to do. Best antivirus I've ever used, and best 60⏠ever spent :-)

@@edgara9316 You can use another computer to make a bootable USB and boot into it by holding shift while clicking "Restart" in the start menu and when the advanced options menu pops up, select the option to boot from USB. This bypasses any W10S limitations. This works for any distro that has support for secure boot (such as distros that use Ubuntu and Fedora as their base). For others, you need to disable secure boot in the BIOS, which is a bit more involved.

I wouldn't call Win10 "light". My HDD usage is always at 100%. Just sitting there. And we're talking clean boots with no software installed. Microsoft deflects this all the time. "its your antivirus" "its adobe" "its whatever thing we want to tell you it is". Drive health is perfect though, pop any other OS on it and its smooth.

let me guess, do you have a spinning disk? when I was still using Windows (Windows 8) I found that they must be optimising their services for SSDs, in particular the file indexing services. Have a search for how to disable the windows indexing services and see if that helps.... or give Linux a go :P
I had a bit of a scare earlier today when Bitdifender updated, a window was already popped up saying something about an account which I have no idea what it was, something about One Drive. anyway, at the bottom there were these mysterious two icons, one was Mail, one was App Store, internet explorer was there as well. to the left half of my screen were nothing, except icons for things. I restarted and everything left and right halves was back to how it was (those two icons were gone) I'm sure this, whatever it was, will not come back.

A. If you buy Surface Laptop, you can upgrade to Win10 pro for free until the end of the year.
B. If something you bought from the store is removed, I think you still can download it again. MS already does this on Xbox. Some games are removed from the store, but you can still download them if you bought them.
C. Most parents/teachers have no clue what or how group policies work

jonilaht C.- If it's "targeted" to education, it doesn't work that well if ther restricted all apps but the store ones. Any school that have more than 20 computers, the IT need to know what they do.
In my University the technician have near 300 computers to support, and with different versions of Windows, and he have the policies to block all software to execute except the ones the teachers tell him to allow, that includes allow the programs made by the students but not some random downloadedâ program. If the thing of W10S is that strict, then that means you can't even run your own compiled code, if not, then it have flaws.. in any case, the mere concept of W10S is shit.

Windows 10 is amazing once you have solved the privacy issues a little bit, come on man.
A fellow dev here.. Barnacules, you should make a video about what it is to actually publish legacy app in Windows Store. This was a big feat when they were launching, they were extremely proud and loud to announce that Windows Store will support publishing old apps. And so I tried. Long story short, I ended up writing a 5 page manual on how to do it that takes "only" about 3 days of time to go through and guess what. Microsoft headquarters in my country actually used that to send out to developers of companies Microsoft bribed to publish their legacy apps on Microsoft Store.
+Barnacules Nerdgasm Here's the thing: you can already restrict Windows 10 and 10 Pro to just install and run apps from the store. Under Settings > Apps > Apps & features, there's a drop down box under the "Installing Apps" section which allows you to choose from 3 options: Allow apps from anywhere, Warn me before installing apps from outside the Store, Allow apps from the Store only. There is literally no reason for Windows 10 S to exist.

Couple notes:
1. Iphone's, ipad's and the like are ALSO ARM devices. Apple license's from ARM to make their 'own' processors. Still ARM arch though.
2. Android doesn't quite suffer from that same store issue. If a developer pulls an app from the store, and you had it already installed, it stays on your device. Only change is you can't go to the store and download it again. Good thing you can just download an APK extractor and put the app on any device you want (that you own of course) ;)
As an educator, the first thing that gets disabled and blocked by the network firewall is the windows store. There is not one app in the windows store that I feel is needed, necessary or beneficial.

There isn't an "upgrade from Windows 7"! That's it. Everything new is a downgrade. 7 is the last good OS. There is a reason ~50% of computers are still using it.

You can't use photoshop for video thumbnails, but I'm pretty sure that MS Paint or other store tools can get you covered well. Maybe there are also video recording programs in the store, who knows.
Also, on the Microsoft Windows page, the operating systems are listed in order from left to right: Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 S, Windows 10 Pro.
Some users will read from left to right and just because of the order feel that Windows 10 S is better than home.

I work in IT for a school district and it is true, we dont need the OS to be locked down, we have ways of doing it already, which definitely makes Microsoft's argument a flop at best.

Yea, it's North Korea's state distributed Linux distro. It is my understanding that they actually claim it to be the invention of North Korean ingenuity from the ground up, I think it might actually just be modified Ubuntu but I'm not sure although whatever they built it off of judging by pictures and circumstances, it is probably built from a very old distribution.

Publishers who want to develop on mac publish on the apple store. Publishers who want to develop on Android publish on the Google Play Store. Publishers who want to develop on Windows publish on their own webpages. This means that the overwhelming majority of applications for Windows are simply on web pages, rather than in the Windows store. Windows computers would go from having the largest pool of applications of any device, to having one of the smallest.
But IIRC correctly they showed Windows 10 S with the ability to join a domain, a feature not available in Windows 10 Home, they are offering S free to any schools with who are running Windows 10 pro. This would indicate that this isn't based on Home but rather Pro.
I am pretty sure it was mentioned at Build that AppX packages could be distributed via the web, for those developers that didn't want to use the store.

No, what he was explaining is that a lot of popular programs' binaries are in the x86 instruction set which isn't the nature of ARM-based CPUs. Hope this info helps.

For the people who don't want to run Linux because it doesn't support some programs only available on Windows: there is this program called Whine that makes Linux able to run programs designed for Windows.
I agree with your sentiments in this video, but the one thing you missed is that you can upgrade to Pro for free within a year of purchasing the laptop, and then it's $49 after that first year.
So basically Microsoft is now trying to rule it's users with an iron fist. Wouldn't be surprised if they decide to force an update onto non S windows 10 OSs that basically turns it into Windows 10S.
I'm a big fan of Windows 10, but with W10 S, they took out everything that made normal Windows 10 my favorite OS.
The other day I accidentally opened Microsoft Edge on my Windows 10 Pro computer and I noticed the option to change your default search engine no longer works. Every time I try, Edge tells me "you can not change the searches engine at this time."
This shit really fucking pisses me off. So I want to download something from the windows store. Microsoft makes me sign in.. Ok...? I'll sign in. So I sign in, It completely signs me fully into windows and uses my Microsoft account password to sign into my computer. #AnniversaryUpdateSucksDick!

I don't use the Windows store. Once I realized it's tied to Windows Update, I abandoned all notions of ever using it. I only enable the Windows Update and WMI services when I choose to update.

That happened to me to and that was enough for me to nuke Windows 10. Even though I use a Ryzen CPU I prefer staying on windows 7 and have no security updates (I just use Windows to play GTA V so no big deal, the rest I use Manjaro) than using windows 10 that pisses me off every time I have to use it.
But, Microsoft doesn't require you to use or make a Microsoft Account with Windows.

I'm just sticking with windows 7 :) Then once that runs out i'll switch to 8.1. Then hopefully at that point Linux will have enough videogames to be able to switch over lol. Plus video card drivers (proprietary ones) for linux really suck, there's still no easy way to install amd's drivers for my R9 390 in linux. :( And the open-source ones are crap for playing games that are more graphics intensive than TF2.
I successfully installed dual boot windows 10 and kali linux with secured uefi settings turned on in single ssd of my laptop with no problem.

Arguably, many IT guys are incapable, and canât implement group policy properly. I remember back in the XP days this was a very big problem, where you could circumvent the group policy by simply renaming executables, or unplugging the LAN cable during logon, to prevent scripts from running.
In Jan 2016 the person (me) running their Ms 10 was the administrator!
How did that change? A lot of people welcomed that choice and didn't send the computer back. Now I wish we would have.
So glad I'm a Linux user, Everytime I use my windows partition it's a pain to use because my workflow is so reliant on the multitude of keyboard shortcuts I have set up that Windows is just unbearable to use anymore. It also can't read my EXT4, Btrfs, and Xfs formated drives.
I will just stick with GNU+Linux.

If you want to fix something on Windows then you have to go through countless fucking google searches and fourms and it almost never fucking works.
Ever since I've started using Linux Solving problems has been easy as hell. Theres almost always a fix that will work.
Detinu Detinu in my year and a half experience with Linux, every problem I've ever had (which I could probably count on just my fingers if I wanted to) I've fixed in less than a day, most of the time in minutes. I'm sure there might be a handful of bugs that aren't covered super well on forums, but most problems should already be covered and easily fixable.

No Iâwould hate that. Lite has been a term some people have used to make their own custom stripped-down lighter versions of Windows. A disorganized non-standardized community of random people would have to use some other word.
Plus I don't know how lite W10S even is; it seems more like a limited-permissions version.

The thing about the Windows Defender situation is that you still have a web browser on these things. You can get infected without downloading an app or program.
My theory is that it's Microsoft is going to make 10S free version of Windows and then charge people with monthly/yearly fee to access full functionality.
This way, they will:
1) Reduce piracy because lets say all future versions of Windows will be S-like and require on-line activation to upgrade this crippled version
2) Forcedly increase user base of their app store, thus making it appealing for developers

Great video and I get your point. But Windows 10 Home now is already being sold at like 120$ from the Microsoft online store. 10S is free and the Pro is 50, so we're still getting the pro version for less than the actual home edition, unless im mistaken and the 10S is not free.
