Turing it off while it was updating is probably what caused the error.
For future ref, you could have just booted into the recovery media and done:

He do worked there for years and with a good wage and health care, he always thanks MS for the health care when his son born, so i don't think it was simple job, also, he can program well, it was part of his job, so maybe telemetry wasn't the only reason for he get fired, maybe was the whole new direction in monetization that make his job less worth

You're really not helping him by saying that.
FYI, he is correctish. The error clearly stated no BCD info. Based on the limited info given out, the above would have resolved it, worst case scenario he could have manually remade the bcd info. Also, being a dev doesn't magically make you an ops guy, typically if your a dev guy, you know what you developed very well, but not the rest of it, where as a ops guy knows how to rtfm and even though his understanding of the program isn't anywhere near as deep, he knows how to do sudo basic things like re-build the bcd/google search the error code.

Laserturken 8659 Well, I've only told my personal experience. I have had several OS-level issues with Windows which made me want to switch. Never had a problem in 5+ months using Ubuntu exclusively. Including installing a ton of software compiled and modified from source, live kernel patches/updates and all. Zero problems. Plus it doesn't slow down with low disk space neither thousands of processes (minimal overhead), can be left on for months without ever being a slowdown due to temp/ram garbage collection, has system-level software updates... Linux for the desktop has moved on, I certainly wouldn't have switched 2 years ago.

I used to dual-boot Windows and Linux. A Linux update fucked my system and I had to reinstall everything. That was the last time I really messed with the OS.

***** I did, then steam would start and show that it's loaded in the System Monitor, but nothing shows up. Found a fix that said to delete a certain folder deep in the steam files, did that, client finally loaded properly but no games would run, it would just say "running" but the game doesn't properly start. Finally found a proper fix that required I run steam through the terminal using this variable "env LD_PRELOAD='/usr/$LIB/libstdc++.so.6' steam"... it was a total nightmare, not to mention more than half my library wasn't compatible with linux (which I understand).
Yeah, GRUB self destructing on Linux is a much better experience.
Fil T that bug was fixed and it wasn't even linux's fault, blame valve for being lazytards with steam on all platforms

Person. You can change where Windows games and other Windows Store software install. it's an option. I have Forza on my secondary SSD. Look it up, I forgot where you go to change it.
Yeah of course, but some have more than 1 SSD so it's nice to know that you can install it on something other than the OS or C drive.

Best LAN advice i can give you:
Bring installation media for OS
Bring backups for all games you want to play.

Put that many PC gamers and Nerds on any non insane internet connection and it will struggle.
Recovery partitions are for simple end users, not power users. They take up far too much unnecessary space. Better to just keep a thumbdrive handy.
VERY slow! Most lans have blazing fast internet that immediately downgrades to the cheapest package your internet company has to offer once everyone starts gaming. -_-

Wow I cant believe that you didn't fix it. I had the same problem, I booted in to the Windows 10 ISO, and repaired the boot file with 2-3 command lines. It was like the second result in google. Took me 15 minutes to fix it. You didn't need to reinstall.

Strange, I had the exact same problem after installing the anniversary update. Maybe next time split the partitions and install the games on another partition.

Depends on the game. Most games don't need to write anything to the registry. But the shortcuts wouldnt work anymore unless you had the same drive letter.

Sorry Jerry but I think it's time for you to try Linux as your main OS for a day. Grab a spare drive and install Ubuntu GNOME, it's a good place to start.

Implying Linux is not susceptible to botched updates breaking the MBR, or causing other problems. In fact, Updates destroying things in Linux is such a problem that Linux Mint prides itself on having a "Don't break my computer" mode in their update manager.

In my own experience(can't speak for everyone), I've had more issues Windows than any Linux distros I've used combined, and I find that I'm more likely to be able to fix issues myself in Linux compared to Windows without going through a complete reinstallation(and I've been using Windows for far longer than Linux).
The only time an update actually broke anything for me, it was somewhat my own fault. And it would have been an easy fix, had I actually thought to reinstall my GPU driver at the time.
Anyway, sure, Linux isn't perfect and things certainly can break under the right conditions, but Windows can be less forgiving with its issues.

If your laptop was compatible with Windows 7 that might have been a better temporary option as it's easier to disable updates, love these kinds of videos, i always comeback to these and binge watch them

great video. as always -thank you. im freelance IT in Manchester England. the windows 10 anniversary update caused problems on roughly 50 out of 500 pcs and laptops that i support. the main problems were : 1. printer completely stopped working- HAD to delete printer and re-install it 2. wifi and ethernet would throw a wobbler : solution was to reboot a few times re-run spybot antibeacon , re-delete all the windows default apps, re-select all the privacy settings. 3. i did a disk cleanup to remove the old version of windows from the "windows.old" folder. 4. things are stable now - i hope microsoft doesnt inflict another major update on us for a long time.

I've had very few issues on my windows 10 machine beyond my Android phones not showing up as a MTP device, and I've tried all the patches and fixes so I just use software data cable, or one of my Chromebooks when I need to move stuff to one of my phones, but I will admit Windows 7 was the last MS OS that got it 100% right out of the box.
linux + win7 for the few games that i can't run/well enough on linux currently. don't need updates for an OS you only use for a few games, so screw long term support. by the time i should care about 10 i think i'll be done with windows at all.

You know, I have been using Windows ever since version 2! Yep, that's right version 2, before Windows 3.1x made Windows popular (Damn that makes me sound old lol)! I have seen each and every version of Windows get released since then. When Windows 95 came along people complained it was too different to 3.1x. Windows ME was the only truly buggy version of Windows that can be blamed on Microsoft. Ever since then we have had people criticizing every version released after Windows 98SE claiming bugs. And yes, that includes Windows 7. When Windows 7 was released hardware manufacturers were very slow to release drivers for it and there were more driver issues than with Windows 8 and 10 combined! So many people said avoid it and stick to XP (because they also did not like Vista) just like today saying avoid Windows 10 and stick to 7! Oh so easy how they forget the many issues Windows 7 had in it's first years lol
No OS is perfect, Windows, OSX, Linux, Android, iOS, the list goes on. All with issues of one type or another. So how about stopping the hating and focus on gaming? :)

Not to be that guy, but isn't it technically your fault for not creating a backup image on another drive/disk? The Windows 10 Anniversary Update is the equivalent of a service pack/major upgrade, and as such it may not always install correctly due to hardware incompatibility or driver/software incompatibility.
Yeah you make a good point. When owning a copy of Windows 10 it is ESSENTIAL to also buy the highest quality professional backup software you can find. I personally use Acronis True Image bc itâs insane to trust these mandatory updates I have no control over.

Windows 7 is becoming very dated for gaming, Get good performance gains these days going to 10, no point having a 1080gtx if i was going to be bottlenecked by 7. But thats just my opinion.

Please try out Linux! I'd suggest Ubuntu, as I, a 13 year old child, has no troubles using it.
Joshsuper3 to be honest Here, Ubuntu is fine, but still Not for the usual gamer. dont get me wrong, i use Arch Linux on many Machines at Home Here, but there is No Way around when it comes to gaming, to use Windows. yes i know there is wine, which Most of the time Drops the fps pretty much insanely, dx11 Support isnt there (17% done if winehq is up to Date)
more devs need to follow linux instead of windows.... windows is so bad honestly from experience, linux just works all the time every time and allows you to do pretty much everything you want... and its free :O
When it comes to Linux Distros I'm more of a Mint XFCE guy, as it's lightweight, and runs better on older hardware, and yes there are a decent # of games for Linux in STEAM, but Windows is still where it's at for PC gaming right now, but for everyday task a lot of times I don't fire up my main triple 24in 1080p monitor dualboot Windows/Mint desktop, I'll just grab one of my Chromebooks, or fire up my Chromebit that's in my guest room attached to a 23in ACER monitor.

you could use a Linux USB stick to find a way to back up some games onto an external hard drive and then reinstall windows from scratch via USB
I have to admit I really enjoyed Microsoft screwing over a Microsoft guy. And seeing you not having some secret trick to fix it and going through a full install....priceless.

You should have gotten some of your buddies to help out and copy some of their game folders to a USB. You'd have been able to avoid having to download a shit tonne of shit from the net had you done that.

Steamapps> common> Insert game name here
Move copy of game folder to USB
Install copy of game folder to your laptops Steam/common folder> Have steam detect files> Play
(You can do the same thing with Origin, Battlent, GoG, & Uplay, too)

Same problem just happened to me RIP windows 10 and my 130+ GB of data...
you could have got a window install cd(or created one) and used it to recover the files. This only works if the computer can not boot but your personal files are still on the hard drive

I spent hours and hours troubleshooting that same blue screen that Jerry got. I lost my data in the process so now I am working to get everything installed again.

man that really sux....... make an emergency package to take with you for any gathering, put it in a small first aid box. Flash drive with windows 10 installer, second flash drive with useful programs, etc. You may not need it, but someone else may find themselves in your situation and then you become the hero!!
As you may have deduced from the mail I sent to you, Microsoft ruined my weekend, too. So I can truly say I can feel you on that one. It took me until yesterday (Sunday) afternoon to get everything up and running again. Had to basically circumvent Windows update and manually dig up and install updates one by one because the f***in updater would look for updates forever. Eventually after a number of updates I didn't bother to count it eventually was working again, but yeah... my weekend has also pretty much gone bust over that one.
Alright.. I've had enough. Windows activation failed because my original key no longer is recognized as authentic. And Microshit has the balls to tell me THIS after I re-installed everything I require?! This is it. I'm getting Linux. Can't play some games, but that is a sacrifice I will need to make in order to be rid of that shitty company.
