I think another major problem with all this monetization is that the original D2 story along with 2 DLC's that we payed for were removed too. That's another gut punch.
Seriously? I haven’t really played d2 since the original game came out. That’s fucked up. Tbh I stopped playing destiny when I realized that initial game they launched was basically an expansion. For $60. Glad I jumped ship because I guess it’s just gone downhill. I even remember bungie blaming micro transactions on Activision. Man I miss Destiny 1.
Nothing of value was lost.
@@joebk44 i quit the same exact time, for the same exact reason. I played Destiny 2 from launch every night with my roommate for a month or so, but then its just running down the same chorelist every week and its not fun. Then they released an expansion for $40 and I realized they are drip feeding the game for expansions every 3 months and thats not a model I want to play.
Also, its a boring game after you get to the point where its just doing yhour weekly ingram checklist blah.
@@dakineprotoss Games as a service do always reach this point: Wow dailies, Apex weeklies, etc
I payed for d1 three times because of their bs. Along with a PlayStation store issue. After foresaken. I took a break, and when I came back have been completely lost, and have no clue where to start.
The actual price to experience all of the Destiny 2 content as a brand new player is astronomical. They really need to bundle things in some reasonable way to catch up
Patty! And yeah for a new light they just wouldn't know where to start
Patty is here too!
Well said. Paying full price (when theyre not on sale) for dlcs more than a year ago is ridicolous, its so hard to convince new lights to buy a dlc if theres one really good weapon specific to that dlc, looking at you divinity and shadowkeep
Not to mention that the older DLCs that they're still selling at FULL PRICE have 95% of their content stripped out and deleted..
Game can go on sale and dlc but never dungeon keys. You can only buy the keys with silver or a deluxe edition.
I’ve had at least 4 friends try destiny 2 in the last year and all of them quit within 48 hours. I think after around the 4th time I said “Yea but you have to do this, this and this before you can do that” they just lost interest. Really sucks to be in this state
Line was drawn 2 years ago. 2000-3000 hours in the game. When the content got removed that I already payed for, plus nothing new in pvp. Is became a job and not at all fun anymore.
Uninstalled, never went back to it. And seeing that nothing has changed, no plans to go back.
Barely anyone brings up the content vault. It's the worst case of anti-consumerism I've ever seen. It's bad when Fortnite does it with free content and it's about 1000x as bad when Destiny does it for PAID content.
I stopped a week after Lightfall because the bullshit from Bungie at this rate already buried you so deep you couldn't even see the sky. I was a diehard lover to Destiny and was a childhood gem, it broke my heart in so many ways once Bungie went down this road.

True, however I will say Destiny's core gameplay is great. Too bad everything else sucks. Never got into it because of the awful story, monetization, etc etc
I think the reason this video is popping off so much is because people see a lot of similarities with other live services. People are just fed up with getting an unfinished game with a battle pass at launch. Nothing is ever gonna last forever.
Sad but true. And let's not forget PAID Early Access games that get microtransactions implemented before the rest of the game is finished. an ARPG on steam comes to mind that i forgot the name of.
@alexdolezalu9066 have u noticed that the stores for these early access unfinished games generally work flawlessly but nothing else does 😂
I think its because Destiny is the leader in live service games, so almost every other gaming company is looking at what destiny does and taking notes so to speak. So anyone paying attention is looking at what bungie is doing even if they don't play the game.
@@Jabinc Nah, Fortnite is the leading live service game and the one that started the Battle Pass Madness, Collabs and Skin Packs
Yeah. Sadly, Destiny 2 is one of the earliest adopters of this model, and it's really been emblematic of the disappointment of the last ten years in gaming itself.
Destiny has actually managed to put out good content every other year, but it's undeniable the monetization model (and poor initial releases) truly is the black mark on Destiny 2 and this era of gaming in general.
Asmon reacting to Aztecross is something I NEVER knew would happen. That’s crazy.

The problem is that over time, instead of creating items just for micro transactions, bungie has been pulling cosmetic items that are typically in the paid version of the game and then locking it behind a pay wall. They adopted all the worst traits from Activision when they left.
they could keep the scummy shit they do as long as we got a forsaken every year. But we only got that because of acti and the additional support from vicarious and the other dev teams. We got more quality content and the monetization was less than it isnow. Never thought id actually miss activision being involved but this is a prime example of the grass isnt always greener.
Not even remotely true.
Jokes on you, bungie did that before activision 😂😂😂
Activision never had the rights to decide such actions in the first place with destiny as a whole.
Bungie was in control of everything basically. Stop excusing this bullshit
@@xSoulhunterDKx activision did have the rights to demand a return in investment though and all bungie was able to come up with is the "eververse"
because "making content is hard" and another forsaken was never going to happen again
@@knightofnightside Activision wasn’t in control of dlcs and prices directly and what is being monetized. Bungie did that.
The thing with cosmetics being behind a paywall in destiny 2 is that the cosmetics were typically one of the big things people loved to grind for and tended to be locked behind challenging content, so the move to having the majority of them being in the eververse shop is extremely disappointing and lowers the amount of things in game to grind for. The year of triumph or whatever update in destiny 1 added some of the best armor ornaments in the game and they were earnable by beating the 4 raids.
thats why i miss Destiny 1. Destiny 2 was a big let down for me as a HUGE destiny fan
I miss the days where seeing a player with a unique skin made you go "wow, what super difficult challenge did they pull off to unlock that?" instead of "wow, they must have a ton of money to burn to buy that".
I remember making rune chainmail and being satisfied with that, knowing each little ingredient and level that went into rune plate. And when you made the chainmail, it was like no we're going back to weapons or another metal type, you don't just leap one armor to the next. Now we're out of the realm of cosmetics though..
This is exactly why I quit destiny I remember when I would hours or days grinding for exotics, armor and cosmetics only to see that they could just be purchased with zero effort later there is actually no point in even playing anymore
When getting a title meant something... game died for me the moment it went f2p.
Like in souls games with the white spirits of other players
@@Daniel-wz3yv Yeah they fucked up super bad setting light levels to 1000 off rip and locking old content behind dlc's. The light level thing literally made me quit on the spot. I was level 600 or something i think after playing for a good while about 3 years ago and came back to the game a year later. All my characters were lvl 1000, but the actual gear I had was garbage to continue playing the game. Reset my characters to "try again" and that shit didn't last more than a week
Crazy to realize that Activision wasn't actually the problem.
Remember how happy we where when they split? O man how wrong we where, they are even scummier!
well they where the problem and then after they left bungie drop a banger like forsaken and then they slowly became what activision was
@@itsyouuu3152 Nope, you can thank Activision for that Banger too. Their studios also did the seasons and Opulence is universally loved. I tried to get into Destiny 2 a year or so ago. After I beat the tutorial "campaign" (really just a few missions that don't give you any info on anything going on at all) pretty much all there was to do without paying was repetitive grinding activities. The gunplay was decent, but got boring pretty quickly without a reason to keep playing.
Apparently there used to be another free campaign but it was deleted from the game. There wasn't even a story to latch onto to get me into the game, I was told I was a guardian but to this day I still don't know what I was supposed to be guarding.
Hold the fuck on. Are you telling me there's no main campaign anymore?? I played for a few hours some years back, I don't even remember when, but I at least had a story mode to slog through.

Its actually slightly worse than it seems. Due to 'sunsetting' theres a LOT of content that I have paid for that is no longer even in the game. I mean multiple expansions worth of content. So not only do they milk the playerbase, the content that was already in the game they took away to force players to buy new content. I miss the mini Argos raid :/
This shit is exactly what made me quit Destiny 2.

I caught up quick with what was going to happen with the game. As soon as I got 2 absolutely shit DLCs in the deluxe edition (which I didn't even pay for, a friend got me the game to play together, and I still want "my" money back) and they announced more, I was out. It was even more ridiculous to see people saying how they "fixed" the game with Forsaken - like I'm going to spend ADDITIONAL $40 just play a game like it was supposed to be at launch.
Nah man, I ain't sinking money into a game just to make it "good". Give me a good base experience and I'll consider dropping more for GOOD content. Unfortunately Bungie isn't doing the former and is inconsistent with the latter.
As someone who was a day 1 destiny 1 and 2 player I was so sad leaving destiny for good. It’s like a friend into gambling/drugs always asking for money.

@@Jacobb.. I remember wanting micro transaction cosmetics 😂 so excited for D1 taken gear. That was the beginning of the end.
fuck it im not. I still play destiny 1 every now and then, far more than I've ever played destiny 2, i immediately abandoned destiny 2 once the bullshit that curse of Osiris was, came out, i went back to it once forsaken came out, hoping that the game would FINALLY get completely new content, which it did for a short while but i lost interest again within the first couple years and even then later with the following dlcs, destiny 2 never made any kind of impact on me or drew my interest into the game consistently enough for the last 3-5 years now. I go back to the game solely when im bored out of my fucking mind (which is very rare for me since there are so many better single player and multiplayer out games anyway), but other than that i could care less for destiny 2. Players and content creators alike should've seen the writing on the fucking wall once the whole "free to play" aspect started with destiny 2, and now its finally making people realize how bone fucking dry destiny 2s pool of content actually is without microtransactions or purchased dlc content. Bungie has shit on the OG destiny community and the games eco system for the last several years now and i think its a good thing more people are dropping this sorry ass excuse of a continuation of destiny 1.🤷♂
I also stopped playing a couple seasons ago.

In terms of getting cosmetics from the actual game. This is how it works.
95% of all customization items come from the eververse store, but lots of Raid and Dungeon armor still looks fucking sick.
HOWEVER, the transmog system sucks. If you want to be able to use an armor piece you have as an ornament, you have to spend 1 Armor strap token. You get these from doing a bounty. So it cost 5 tokens/bounties to transform 1 armor set in a cosmetic one you can equip over your gear.
But here is the kicker, you can only do 10 bounties per season, and after that you'd have to pay for synthweave straps in the eververse store.
Also, exotic weapon skins do not drop in the game, eververse or pre-order dlc is the only way you can get new skins for exotc weapons and armor

It drives me nuts how expensive stuff is in some games. I booted up SWOTOR and a single weapon skin costs $20. Why would I spend that on a single skin? If I could spend that and buy 10+ shiny new toys I'd be much more willing to open my wallet. It's all just digital goods, why wouldn't you emphasize volume? I mean a whole expension in GW2 costs $30. As someone who just got into it a month or two ago I had to read the reddit FAQ on what each purchase gets me and Google extensively to see what I needed. That willingness to research alone already sets me apart from most players so I'm in a very small minority of potential new players who will actually stick around. Bungie needs to change it.
@@iinsomniaaaaabungie should first stop deleting content from the game. 😂 everything from Vanilla game to 2018 expansion are gone. You can still buy them on steam, but they add nothing. There is no game to play. 😂 Free to play content in Destiny 2 is just Destiny 1 content. 😂 And every expansion you have bought gets deleted when new expansion comes in. So you can't even replay the game, because content is not there anymore. 😂 they scam you.

@@MikkoSimilaI started on Forsaken, the 1st explanation, and they had ALREADY deleted huge portions of the campaign. It's crazy that the game is still alive at all, much less still making money.
Destiny 2 was one of my first XBox One games. I had a lot of fun with the first raids and liked using the currency to get the shaders from the store. It was MTX for cosmetics only back then. I don't remember buying a battle pass. Actually really sad to see the state of the game now. I loved guns like Sweet Business for questing and it's crazy to see them recycling old exotics as "new" content.
"seasonal events are not included in the seasonal pass"
"each shoe sold separate" (?)
If bungie wants to treat the game as free to play then campaigns should be free!
The worst part of destiny 2 was that they removed the campaign you actually bought.
And the raid you actually bought. And another raid you actually bought. And another raid you actually bought. And another raid you actually bought. And another raid you actually bought.
Literally. 5 raids have been removed (leviathan, eater of worlds, spire of stars, scourge of the past, and crown of sorrow.)
they removed content that people paid for and the frogs stayed in the pot, well most of them.
@@MusMasi Because most of the "frogs" had already done that content to death. Removing an old raid like Scourge of the Past sucks, it makes the game less of a value proposition for new players, and creates massive contextual holes that get plugged in the laziest ways imaginable.
Back in the day if you wanted the Whisper of the Worm sniper rifle you went on this awesome mission to find a hidden portal that only spawns in certain circumstances, then you have a timed jumping puzzle to complete that finished in a massive boss fight, which not only gave you the gun, but also unlocked the master mode of that mission which you could farm for the catalyst and achievements to get the best looking ship in the game.
Now, because they removed the planet that mission was on, and the mission itself, if you want to get the Whisper of the Worm sniper rifle? You go out and do the most monotonous content you could image, save up resources which as a new player you need for literally everything, and in huge quantities... and you buy it from a vendor.
Almost every exotic weapon in that kiosk used to have some kind of mission or event tied to it, and they were all removed, so that the content they were attached to could be dismantled, repackaged and sold back to us, saving costs and dev time whilst Bungie apparently plough all their resources into Marathon.
All of these things suck, but they really don't affect veteran players that much. For us it's the principal more than anything.
This is why I find it so hard to recommend Destiny to people, because whilst I would happily recommend the experience I had, that experience is unavailable to anyone playing the game today, and the experience that's on offer? The entire New Light experience? You'd have to be a masochist to put yourself through that.

12:00 this kind of mechanic can be convoluted but still good. For example, Dark souls weapon upgrades. In DS1, you have to have souls to upgrade a weapon, but you also need titanate shards. There are 4 levels of base titanate, but before you can go to each level, you have to give a blacksmith a coal. If you are going for base power/scaling, you need both the large and very large ember to give to Andre. If not, you have to find the specific ember you need and give it to the blacksmith who takes said ember. THEN there's the colored titanite... Anyway, the point is that convoluted systems aren't always bad, but usually gets bad ONLY through added content to a base game. A base game like Dark souls has convoluted systems, but is still easy for the player to navigate. D2 is impossible to navigate as a new player because content has been added specifically for max level characters for a long time. This also happens to a lot of MMORPGs.
I loved playing Destiny 4-6 years ago on my Xbox One s
Yes DLC's were a bit pricey, but I could still play stuff (also remember progression with power level) I recently logged alin and suddenly was at power level 1000+ (I was 304 when I last actively played)
I quit this game four years ago when I felt the microtransactions were getting out of control. Little did I know how good I had it back then.
It's crazy too because I feel like it's made this way to prey on people who don't just buy the Expansion + Annual Pass. If you get that bundle, you basically don't have to worry about buying anything until next year/the next expansion. But the minute you decide not to get that bundle, you have to start doing mental gymnastics and going on an Amazonian expedition to fill in the gaps of what you don't have. It's terrible.
You do need to worry, or at least be annoyed by, the event pass being waved in front of you every season.
This is well said
@@SkellyHertz just dont play the events, theyre garbage anyway
Yes and no, the dungeons are extra content we never used to get we get 2 a year more work = we need to get paid! what if they just increased the cost of the seasons but only those including a dungeon? People would lose their minds! Just as they have now with the relatively small price increase. I agree it’s confusing and badly done and The fragmentation of legacy content is bad but also bungie knows that they specifically said the next on boarding point would be after light and dark ends. What’s the solution we don’t want to pay for it? Then they will stop making it saying that the 30th anniversary would of been free in d1 is BS because there were massive content droughts in d1 they simply wouldn’t of made it!
Not only that but for the balkans the game is still full price, meaning those countries are paying 4x the amount for the same content as everybody else. Imagine you want to play a game but you have to buy 3 of your friends the same game, thats the price.
I was a D1 veteran all the way to the end (Rise of Iron), and played D2 from launch but by the end of Shadowkeep bungies monetization of this game had almost single handedly killed every last ounce of interest I had in the game. I came back off and on during beyond light but every single time I did it would last 1 maybe 2 weeks at most. It's almost depressing knowing just how much potential this game had only for it to be completely squandered away out of greed. And I don't say this lightly at all but this game very easily had more than enough potential to be one of the greatest games of all time.
Also in POE you dont need currency tab. Its just neat thing for people who love order.

The thing people often forget about cosmetic only mtx is that they take dev time that could’ve been used for really good content. And we see this issue with destiny 2 a lot. For years we haven’t had any new vendor armor sets but every 3 months we get 2 brand new dope ass armor sets for silver. Along with a few exotic weapon and armor ornaments. We get way more character customization options for silver then we can actually earn in game

You shouldn't. Like if anybody just buys out cosmetics, expansions and what so not just to get into it, that's the equivalent of throwing your money in the garbage bin. Like at that point, just donate it to a homeless person with a drug addiction. On the other hand if you spend roughly a couple of weeks or a month or so to see if you want to play the game, then you can decide to invest for your own consumption. It's business and only a product. By the time you're in your 60s, that money is digitally wasted, t'was good trip though.
Bet your going to have people pay $100 for gta6 lol
It's actually very easy to phrase: microtransactions are totally fine, like in PoE where you can buy a supporter pack, so basically a huge donation to the devs, but what most "game companies" do is completely unacceptable and borderline criminal. They create problems and sell you solutions for real money, basically bullying you into buying stuff that makes sense to be there in the first place. They abuse some players' gambling addiction and other horrible disorders for profit. They don't care about the enjoyment of the product. They create the shiniest possible candy wrapper, sell it for a huge load of money, but there's just feces inside.
This video hits so damn well, your a good man for both reacting and picking it apart nicely Asmond
One scummy thing about Destiny 2 I found that no one talks about is how the Devs can essentially delete expansions or dlc to make room for newer expansions because that’s why the og campaign is not there because they felt the game is too big.
Had no interest in Destiny 1 or 2 and heard they had issues and whatever, but 2 seemed to get better and I saw it on for a pretty good sale with expansions so I bought them against my better judgement. Not long after they gave the game and expansions out for free because they were planning on deleting them for the new expansions. I managed to go through the main story but I didn't get to touch any of the expansions I paid for before they were deleted and I never bothered playing the game again. Im glad I quit before I really got into the game. Still mad I got robbed of 60 dollars.
Yup additionally I go by the Opinion of Red War being the single BEST Destiny Campaign and it got removed

@@ThesavagesoulsI started playing at the first expansion (of 5 so far), and they had ALREADY deleted huge portions of the campaign because of the stupid way they forced the single player campaign to be part of the multiplayer world, which is constantly changing. Literally impossible to follow any part of the story because they're constantly deleting things.
Destiny 2’s monetization is less about micro transactions and more about dividing up content into seperate purchases to get more money out of a dedicated player vs buying them all together at one, slightly lower price but with 0 idea about the quality of the content.

The seasonal items (season 21) total will cost around 44k silver.
The communal archived items will cost around 260k silver.
The combined exotic cosmetics of each class (Hunter, Titan and Warlock) in the archived section is around 22k silver each, so 66k silver for all 3 classes.
So if someone wanted to buy everything currently on the Eververse store with silver, it is roughly over 360,000 silver.
And how much is that in actual money?
@@FelisImpurrator So if its around $10usd for 1,000 silver. so thats like $3,600 USD give or take.
@@omniadoc Man. That's nasty.
None of the stuff you can buy in the store has any effect on gameplay.
I know Cross makes the argument that loot is the endgame so it’s “pay to win,” since loot is “winning” but the cosmetics you get from the store are aesthetic only. It’s ludicrous to say that d2 is pay to win. Unless you mean paying for the game itself, which is… most games?
The real shit that you need, that you want, comes from playing the game. I don’t know why people are acting like micro transactions are brand new… every live service game has it, and a lot are much worse than this.
Inclusion of season pass was just an optics shift. Before season passes, before the game was “free to play,” you’d simply buy the season, buy the content. You’d still get all the same shit, it was just dispersed through vendors and challenges and stuff.
When the game went “free to play,” they introduced the season pass ladder. Same content, same price. But now instead of buying the season you’re buying the season pass. No difference in content. But the “season pass” has a much more negative imprint.
They should’ve never gone free to play, because it isn’t really, and just confused things even more.
The seasonal armor you get in Season of the Deep (by playing the game) is some of the best armor they’ve ever released in the game.
I’m not even rank 100 yet (used to get there in a week or two) after a month and a half of the Season. But I’ll still get the coolest armor by playing a few hours a week. Barely a grind.
@@AETHEREALMINDS I know its all cosmetic and it has no impact on game play and you dont need to spend a single dime in it. I haven't. But the point is that Bungie is putting a most of their effort or time on the store instead of elsewhere.

how crazy is it that Bungie left Activision/Blizzard only to adopt a similar, if not downright identical business model, and take it to the nth level... I honestly never thought Bungie would ever resort to these sort of methods. This was probably the most heartbreaking react to sit through only because, much like Blizzard, Bungie was one of those companies I literally grew up with as far back as the original Marathon. We're talkin' some ground zero action here! Unbelievable...
Money corrupts, Bungie seen all that money Activision was making off of them and Bungie said they wanted ALL of the money. IMHO they add sponsorships so games kind of like Nascar. When you play the game you get some armor with a with a sponsor logo, or your in a room and one of the tables has a pepsi on it, or whatever. Then every month sponsors put in for new placements and the textures change. I bemoaned this years ago and was met with the response "but the devs have to fund the game". Now look at where we're at, spend $30 for a dev-designed outfit to stand out from the crowd and people complain that there's nothing to grind for anymore cosmetically... yayyyy.
You aren’t alone. “It’s just cosmetic” was always a bad argument, because cosmetics are an important part of games. I would argue just as important as gameplay. I mean people would be pissed if something like playing a female character or a black character was locked behind a paywall, but strictly speaking that’s just cosmetic. Digital self-expression is important (note: I’m not saying playing as a pre-designed character is bad, or less than a customized character). Cosmetics, are important. If they weren’t, people wouldn’t spend so much on them.

Destinys whole problem is that you cant play the season content without buying the battlepass. It is a battlepass system that undermines the whole point of a battlepass system which is to downplay the importance of microtransactions. If you make it all a choice, players are more willing to make that choice. In fact, Destiny's monetization system actively makes people not want to spend money
