Civil War - Was A24's biggest gamble worth it?

  • A24, everyone's favorite studio, has released their biggest budget movie yet in Alex Garland's controversial Civil War.
No two ways about it, everyone is brining baggage to this one! No sooner had the first trailer dropped than people were questioning if releasing a movie like this was "responsible in an election year". Long before anyone could see it there was fevered speculation on "who side" it would be. Further still many were outraged by the lack of realism in a Texas California Alliance as these states "could never be politically aligned in the real world".
Well luckily it's a movie, a work of fiction, a piece of motion picture storytelling... you know the most popular of the performing arts.
Starring Kirsten Dunst as a world weary photo journalist braving travel to report on a divided nation, civil war is not for the faint hearted. Thanks to a skillfully crafted trailer most who haven't seen it are focused on President Nick Offerman (is he Trump, is he not?) and a trailer stealing, meme worthy scene with Dunsts real life husband Jesse Plemons asking "what kind" of American someone is.
Now that it is out, people are getting to form opinions AFTER seeing it (or in some cases just parroting the thoughts of their favorite critic). Which is a much better order of things!
Was the big budget, politically charged risk worth it for A24?

It seems people are describing the movie that they wanted it to be rather than the movie that they actually saw! ☆☆☆☆☆ ❤'d it! Great review! ❄ 🌎 ❄

I live in a town in southern New Mexico where Ari Astor is filming his new comedy Eddington. I am amazed at how well A24 seems to spend their money. A couple of years ago Disney/Buena Vista came to town to make a streaming only film, and they had a literal army of people out here. They seemed to spent loads of money compared to what A24 used. I think Disney has gotten so big, that their internal bureaucracy works against them. It's good to see A24 thriving, I just hope they don't get too big and unwieldly.

Thanks for taking the time to comment and sharing that first hand experience. I'm with you, I hope that A24 do that most difficult of things, stay successful with out giving in to bloat that has ruined many companies. Looking forward to hearing from you again, feel free to share any experiences you have with the folks that are filming in your town. - Patrick

This movie is a beautiful example of an empty signifier. The left likes it, the right likes it, even Russia likes it.

Some of the left and right seem to hate it too. However, judging by who they are, that might be because they profit from negativity no matter what the topic. So I'd say your point stands. Thanks for watching and taking thetimetocomment. - Patrick

It's something we didn't get to talk about, but I liked it too. The song choices were bold and offbeat, which I think suited the unsettling nature of the story.

There was a lot that this movie could have delved into as the reasons for a civil war. None of that was mentioned except that the current POTUS was on his 3rd term. This just became a very violent road trip by 4 journalists from NYC to DC with lots of random, violent situations thrown in. Even at the end, the WF and other rebel forces had all the tanks, attack helicopters and missiles while the defending Federal Forces had none? How is that possible that the US Army had no tanks or Apache copters left to defend the White House or didn't evacuate the President to a safer location?

    • @HearUsOut
      @HearUsOut  Před měsícem +2

For me, the movie could not have been what it was if an explanation of how things got where they did had been given. I wont argue against the idea that there are some plot holes. The President not being in a bunker is an example. However, absolute accuracy and fidelity to 'real life' is not the point of the movie for me. Thanks for checking out the video. We might not agree completely but still very much appreciate you commenting. Hope to hear from you on another video. - Patrick

@@HearUsOut or that the WF soldiers would just execute an SS agent who had her hands raised in surrender. Then go on to drag the President out and just shoot him too. Unbelievable!

Thanks for the vid. Plemons played a right wing character and the president pledged his allegiance ‘to god and flag ‘ also right wing tropes. So it’s not really ambiguous who is in charge.
But other characters were clearly left vague on purpose.

Thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to comment. On an individual level there are definitely assumptions that can be drawn, the decision to not focus on how we got here (and by extension who is right and wrong) is what made the movie work as a whole for me. It is a criticism I see from many, but had they explained the entire backstory I would have found this a much less engaging film. Glad to have you watching us, hope you like some of our other stuff too. -Patrick

The closest thing that was a scary movie based on a real war was 5 Days of War by Renny Harlin. Of course with a much lower budget and Val Kilmer.

The marketing paid off, and making the movie apolitical certainly helped with getting more people to watch. Personally I think that’s a cop out because while I’m not on either side, I at least want something to take away from a war movie that is obviously politically motivated. I don’t mind either message in movies as long as the message is relevant and expertly conveyed. But I still think the movie was good.

Thanks for watching and especially for taking the time to share your thoughts. I understand your feelings and although I've heard similar perspectives I think you articulate that point of view better than anyone else so far. I guess the reason I don't feel not picking a side was a cop out is that the message was still very strongly political, just not in line with an A or B agenda. Highlighting the outcome of allowing politics to run away from common sense creating tragic absurdity that could only be a result of ignoring humanity for political ideology was the point in some ways. Glad that we both enjoyed the movie even though we had slightly different reads on it. Cheers for sharing and I hope we hear from you again. -Patrick

@@HearUsOut Patrick, your response to this comment is thoughtful and generous. As for me, I don't watch movies for a political message. For that, I will watch a political speech.
I felt like this movie almost belongs in the horror genre.
