2-Step and launch control = foot on throttle
Anti-lag = foot off throttle
;)
Hylle1984 yes
As simple as it can get
Why do Americans still struggle with the difference between the 2?? So frustrating!!! 😂😂🙈
yeah he's not even talking about real anti lag. Like you said, als = boost when you're of the gas
www.mx6.com/forums/fe-dohc/194674-proper-antilag-thoughts-comments-suggestions.html real anti lag sytem
5 minutes in we start talking about the content listed in the title.........why do vloggers do this?
Makes sense, I just always know any vlogger I watch skip about 5 - 7 minutes in and you get to the content. I thought it was intentional, as in just fucking with us not as in we have to cause youtube fucks us if we do not. Fantastic, you sir have a new subscriber.
Content filling
some vloggers like wasting peoples time and making shitty videos...
because they want you to watch the whole video for tha cash boiii
@@PureFunction why don't you put the filler in the second half of the video
Anti lag pops and bangs are when the throttle is closing or closed to keep the turbo spinning it’s used mainly in rally cars when the driver is off the throttle Breaking or gear changing for a corner u hear pops and bangs those pops and bangs keep the turbo spooled up on maximum boost and no turbo lag thurs the term “anti lag”
So when you hear a supra doing 2 step why do some just sound like it’s casually bouncing off the Rev limiter while others have flames and bangs that go along with the 2step?
I always knew there was a difference between the two but this really cleared up why and how they're different awesome video!

2 step is a rev limiter. It limits by delaying the spark during the combustion cycle. By delaying the spark, the piston slows down because the spark is what bangs the pistons down to bdc (bottom dead center) means the piston is all the way down in the cylinder. When the piston slows down, the crankshaft also slows down which weakens your rev to whatever limit you set it to. You have to understand, the earlier the spark, the faster the piston goes down. With 2 step, spark is delayed so the pistons don’t go down immediately.
Anti-lag is designed to remove turbo lag. It does that by doing what the 2 step does, delaying the spark. This is what most people confuse about. When the spark delays, the air/fuel mixture will not be combusted fully, so that means the remaining non combusted mixture of air/fuel are going to go out the exhaust manifold no matter what through the turbo. Those non combusted air/fuel, since it’s very hot, the pressure is high, the higher the pressure the faster they will travel through hitting the turbo consistently and remove lag even if your foot is off the throttle.
Also, 2 step and anti-lag make your exhaust backfires because of those non combusted mixture are not fully combusted, and when they go out the exhaust, will cause a BANG!
Thank you sir
Thank you sit
If we delay the spark so why anti lag wont control the rev. Im confused a bit
@@_____.7710 because anti-lag works when your foot is off the throttle, and it is not designed to control rev. Its purpose is to keep the turbo spinning when the throttle is closed, so now once you press the throttle again, the turbo already built boost for you, and you won’t have any turbo lag. 2 step on the other hand is for controlling the rev.

This video should be called "The difference between 2-step and Launch Control" Because that is effectively what he is describing, when refferencing "Anti-Lag".
Launch Control is used to build and control boost, and maintain desired RPMs before the car launchs. And also for a short period after the car launchs in some cases. (Not to be confused with "Traction Control")
It is different to Anti-Lag, which is designed to maintain turbo speed/boost once the driver is off the throttle. Like for rally and tarmac racing.
If you want proof of what im talking about, you can look in the Link ECU software. They have a section to tune "Launch Control", and a seperate section to tune "Anti-Lag".
PURE Function
No. My whole point is that people like yourself ignorantly call LC type system ALS. The mis-information on places like CZcams/forums and such is now so common that it is becoming to the point where people are starting to believe it.
Take this video for example. There was like 16k views last i saw. Thats probably mostly young kids coming up who dont know what is what, and take your incorrect understanding as gospel. So they then go on and perpetuate this poor understanding. Just like you have before them.
actually anti lag is not actually to eliminate lag from the turbo off the line, why would the turbo lag if you're in a stand still?, ALS is more advanced, and not just software, it actually has a bypass valve to keep air flowing through the turbo when you're off the throttle so it never spools down, that's why when rally cars turn ALS on they have to start going or the car will just sit in place throwing fire with throttle at 0%, its used to keep spool between gear change and on decel.
and like Adrian says the combustion happens in exhaust manifold with the ALS system.
Let's see if I got this right now.
Basically two step is a second rev limiter set for a stand still or close to it only, which you can do some shifty tuning to keep boost high which a lot call anti lag because it is technically stopping lag but it's let's just say a more advanced two step. Foot off the throttle and boost is lost.
Anti lag is what rally cross cars and some others use when they hit the button on the start line and get full boost even while idling. Using a bypass to keep air going through the turbo and at 100 percent boost.
Launch Control/LC is both traction control and 2 step and/or anti lag because launch control with no 2 step and/or anti lag would just be traction control. Anti lag or two step with no traction control would just be anti lag or two step.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Notmy Name - Yeah you got it mostly right. Couple of points to make.
ALS on rally cars doesnt nessisarily give you 100% boost at the flick of a switch, depending on how aggressive its set up, and also what parameters are used to arm it. It can be a bit more subtle than that. It feeds air through the engine, but not nessisarily enough for 100% boost. Just enough to drive the turbo so its already moving and ready for when you get back on the gas after a corner/braking event.
Also, the arming of it is usually a bit more complex than a simple switch. Its common for it to be auto active after a full press of the throttle and/or a set RPM threshold, then remain active for a set time after (3-5seconds). Then if those conditions arent met it will auto turn off. This is so its only used while racing. The driver will always be high RPMs and on / off / on / off the gas, so ALS will always be on, but if hes not racing, ie staging etc, then those parameters wont be met and ALS will be off.
Another point. You mentioned launch control has traction control in it. This isnt really true. These are 2 very different things. Although LC can be set up and refferenced to driven wheel speeds etc so that the cut can be used to ramp the power up during a launch without excessively braking traction. But really they are different strategies.
Another point i will make, and its not something you have said, but ive seen it in the comments alot is about ALS on rally cars being used to keep boost between gear shifts. This isnt true either. Most serious rally cars will be using a sequential box. When you shift a box like that, you dont put your foot on the clutch, and you dont even let off the throttle. You simply pull gear after gear. What actually happens is the ECU monitors a strain gauge sensor on the gear lever, and a rotary gear posistion switch on the sequential selector shaft. That way it knows as soon as you initiate a gear shift, and as soon as you have finished the gear shift and successful engaged the next gear. And what it does is simply give a cut for the exact amount of time needed to facilitate the gear shift. Even with the throttle full open and the clutch fully engaged. It happens so fast ALS doesnt even know it. And on DBW cars, it can even be setup with auto throttle blip on downshift so it basically does heal toe for you as you bang down the gears.
BEST VIDEO THANK YOU FOR A GETTING MORE OF A UNDERSTANDING 😁
Thanks man helped out alot! I kept catching myself looking at that beautiful supra
Want To See: Smokey Supra Burnout plz!
Glad you did this video. I was literally just thinking of this exact situation the other day. so many people dont know the difference.
Great breakdown.. been looking for an explanation like this fr a while now.
Just came acros this video randomly. Very knowledgeable. And your garage with your cars my dream garage. I recently purchased my 94 Supra Single Turbo RHD. So as a Supra owner keep it up man
This was a very clear simple explanation I always thought it was the same thing
two-stepping is back pressure creation through backfires, to spool the turbo, and build boost pressure for launch. anti-lag is back pressure creation through backfires, to spool the turbo, when off throttle to shift, and off throttle for braking. This is to reduce turbo spool speed losses, and have less turbo lag, (anti-lag) when you get back into the gas. Anti-lag was perfected in rally car racing, and a quick search here on the "Tube", will show you anti-lag at it's finest. Burble, the new kid on the block, is people playing with their mapping in a non-turbo car, to imitate anti-lag. All these are achieved by over-running your injectors, through the exhaust stroke.
Great video!!! I def will be able to understand 2 step and anti-lag even more Thank you
Awesome garage dude!!! And it looks like a really nice area you stay in.......love those kinds of areas! Awesome vid too!
Makes complete sense thanks man
Clear and concise explanation wicked vid thank you

Crazy garage man!! Love the supra!
This video actually helped me to understand it better.. Tq so much
OMG your first car was a celica? Thats my first car and it has gotten me into that whole S and JZ engine game. Im currently working to assemble a 5SGTE in my 5th gen Celica hatch. Awesome content keep it up!
Great info I would just add that two step is a lot healthier for your car because antilag will cause early onset turbo shaft play. Explosions in the exhaust and turbo sure do build boost but they also strain the turbo a lot so if you have antilag use it in moderation.
Maybe a reason to stick to two step on a street car.
Sounds like a pretty perfect introduction to the systems to me. I didnt even know two step was a thing, just head anti-lag before.
Next up, transbrake system. ready go ^.^
(great explanation, went from 0 knowledge to basics and I didnt grow to hate your voice. 10/10, subscribed)
And also 2-Step builds up boost which doesn't happen when you're just holding a certain RPM with your foot when launching.
I'mRinoX
This is because with 2-step limiter, you hold the throttle full open. This means the engine is consuming much more air volume. This inturn can begin to drive the turbine. And that coupled with an ignition cut that actually controls the RPMs (if the 2step is IGN cut, not fuel cut) can then also have the unburnt fuel/air ignite in the exhaust and drive the turbo that way. But it wont be near as effective as a retarded burn.
When you hold RPMs steady by modulating the throttle, the throttle is probably only gonna be around 20% open in order to reach the desired RPMs while free-revving. So way less air consumption which w ont be enough air volume to reach boost threshold of the turbo.
Correct.I use 2 step on my turbo ls engine set at 3000rpm will build 4psi of boost for a perfect launch on my car without blowing the tires off from launching at full boost. Most plug n plug 2 steps are just ignition cut modules and no fuel cut.But regardless..using 2 step or anti-lag for too long when set at high rpm is a sure way to burn pistons down showing off. Most racers would never sit on a 2 step or anti lag for long staging a car for fear of burning down the motor.2-4 seconds and let go.
Good stuff man
thanks bro this really cleared up the difference.
I salute you bro you got 2 of the beast of toyota supra and mr2!!!🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for the explanation. I have a 2018 Civic type R and I have been looking into 2-step or anti-lag but was concerned how it would effect the turbo my turbo. I have been doing research on which would be better for my set up.
Just found the channel I'm definitely gonna subscribe
For me antilag was easy to learn but 2 step kinda confusing but this vid helped me thx man :D
I recently learned a trick about getting oil out of fabrics. Rub corn starch into the stain and let it sit for a few days before trying to wash it out. Worked great on my jeans.
"What's going on guys" The walking entrance from the corner of the garage. hahaha love that shit
excellent explanation
This is my favorite custom garage. How much did it cost to build the garage?
I don't really like videos even from my favorite CZcamsrs but unlike other videos this actually taught me something cool
Very informative thanks m8
best explanation ever!
Thanks for your info bro its really usefull

thank god i found an explanation video that made sense to me
Definitely clarified the difference and point of anti-lag thanks
I want your garage.. Such a beauty (not the cars just the garage)
Edit: I don't get why some people are negative about me not wanting the supra.. I already have enough cars and I don't have a garage for them.. yea its a supra and ill get my own one day... but as of now I want to get a garage like his.. can't park a supra on the side of the road everyday.
Austin Durden The man's allowed to appreciate a clean garage. Not everyone wants a supra or an mr2. A twin garage is pretty rare in the uk.
maybe it was meant to be humble?! lmao
I want that Supra 😍
anyone can have a supra thats cool. I like the garage cause how you gonna fit a daily, race car, and show car in a one car garage
xToy_Soldier 808 I mean you can build one/ have one built but it’d probably cost a pretty penny
Thanks for the video i always wanted to know the difference and you explained it very good. +1 sub

hi Ryan you have mentioned at the end that this explanation is not perfect at any structure I tell you what mate this is the most user friendly explanation I have ever heard on the entire youtube. Thank you sir keep up the Good work btw bro what power you running on that Sexy looking Supra?
this taught me so much :O
Fire late on power stroke. So unburnt mix goes out exhaust stroke. But we still understand. Good explanation. 👍
Great video!
So what would you recommend for better flames/ pops ? Any aftermarket parts ? Or better fuel system ??
I love houses like that man. I definitely want to build a house back in the Midwest somewhere like Ohio much along how you’re set up.
hmm, correct me if im wrong, but @10:24 (and a previous time before that) you say when coming off the intake stroke is where the a/f mixture ignites late, probably just a mix up of words, but i do believe you mean the power stroke yes?
That "awesome noise" is the slow but eminent death of your turbo. That pop actually pushes the turbine back into the " bearing" or support and let's off allowing it to come foreword , when you hear that " popity pop pop pop--BANG! Bitybitybity-pop pop pop, its just hammering the turbo over and over , not to mention what it does to the exhaust ports , valves, seals, guides....ever see what pre det does to aluminum? You know that shit your cylinder head is made of?
Wow finally someone who admits when he has an opinion and doesn't represent it as a fact. Well done sir.
But doesn't an ALS produce explosion in the manifold infront of the exhaust turbine to keep the turbo spooling while getting off the gas? I thought what you explained was just a different for of 2-Step?
Correct, he basically just showed two videos of two step but in the second one the car was able to ignite the extra fuel. Anti-lag is extra fuel and adjusted ignition while off throttle to always have boost.
Alright, i just knew Anti-Lag from rallying where you redirect the air from the intercooler piping into the exhaust manifold when the throttlebody is closed. Kinda confused me but nice to know that there's another type of Anti-Lag. Thanks for explaining :)
In this first one you can see him switch it on at around 2:28, car drives like normal before that and after he switches it on all hell breaks loose whenever he let's of the throttle :)

PURE Function A simple ign cut 2-step also burns unused fuel/air by using the exhaust manifold/turbo heat to ignite the mixture, so by ur definition a simple ignition cut 2-step is considered anti lag not just 2-step.
U forgot to add what a transbrake and a bump box could do for building boost for the guys that run automatics because theres a 2 step or even a 3 step box tied into those systems and they will build boost unlike just bouncing of the rev limiter but good video homie u hit tell nail right on the head with your information very informative
4:53 actual start of the video about anti lag vs 2 step turbo
As i read the coments the video is saying diferences to launch control and two step
Basocally anti lag from its name you can guess what it is for its basically allowing unused boost to get into the turbo and giving it out or in simpler words it would allow the turbo to give instant boost just like any other supercharger , it would be a deal breaker to get instant boost from a turbocharger but it comes with bas stuff such as it would harm the turbo itself
Wow Honestly this guy just nailed it I love how he explained it because I used to think they both the same thing however now I get the whole point but believe it or not anti-lag just shots more fire 🔥 is old now they have better news stuff even 2 step is old as well
Thank you!
Thank you brah explained well
Great video
The spark plug fires during the COMPRESSION stroke, even if you ignite it late, it would be in the POWER stroke. @9:40 He talks about igniting the air/fuel later in the INTAKE stroke.... lol.... got that wrong!
Intake compression power exhaust is the steps of a combustion engine so if you spray fuel into the cylinder on the intake stroke like he said it's going to ignite on compression the way to make fuel enter the exhaust is to spray fuel in the cylinder either on your power stroke which is downward or during the exhaust stroke when the exhaust valve is open and the piston is on the way up
So what you're saying is rather than cut air/fuel to reduce engine power for whatever reason you let off the gas, it instead retards the timing to kill power. This way the air flow is maintained to keep the turbo up to speed. So the throttle must stay open xx% to supply the air needed.
I assume there's a timer so it will only do this for a few seconds before the throttle will close and timing returns to normal?
that supra looks so so so clean
Are these needed for someone trying to get into the car scene?
TIMESTAMP 5:00 into the video we finally get to the point!! That is all...
Ps. PureFunction great content! 👍
Curious as to why people put 2 step on an auto???
Converter does the job am I wrong?
You know the 1MZ-FE 3 litre V6 from the Camry fits in there pretty easily with little mods. And being an all aluminium engine, doesnt disturb that nice handling balance.
So what do 2jz and RBs usually run on then? For drag racing & roll racing ?
Is it possible to spit fire as well as stutututu? Or is it one or the other?
Perfect
Dude that MR2 looks clean af! I want a first gen MR2 so bad. It's hard to find one in good condition with low miles nowadays.
How much life does it take off your turbo, and can antilag be made to only operate with a switch etc.
So if my car came with a 4k launch control what is that considered any of what you explained in this video or is it another system
My new is, can you use both systems at the same time?
That logo though 👌
I have a 2 speed powerglide supra is it possible to run antilag through an auto to get the pop and flames like the manual's do and if not can you get the 2 step to pop and flame's?
hey man awesome video im definetly a new subscriber but where can i get an anti-lag system?
Can u install anti- lag on a toyota altezza 3de generation stock? And is it easy to install?
So is it possible to have both at the same time?
Do i need to install anti lag or just rev the engine w/o install anything?
Those rubber MR2 boot mats are a dealer only option so kind of rare and harder to find. Not something that was a factory part, only something the original owner of the car in Japan would have purchased from the dealer they ordered the car from.
Generally 2step only cuts ignition, but fuel is not affected. N2MB WOT Box kind of setup.
Would antilag work for a supercharged engine? Or would it not make sence because they work off of a pulley?
Out in pa too it almost looks like your by a place i know by spring grove
The oil happened to me a few times. Always keep spare oil in the car, then when you hit the corners the bottle tips over and whoopsie daisy.
My 2step results in exactly the same as your 'antilag'(which sounds to me like 2 step with retarding ignition not just ignition cut), i set it to 2500rpm and build about 20psi of boost, then launch. I also have it set to my handbrake, not 5mph. so if the handbrake is up, 2 step is activated. It means I can also use it as a rolling 'anti-lag'(2 step), by just pulling the handbrake up 1 click flooring it with clutch out and building boost at 2500rpm in any gear, or whatever i decide to set the rpm to. Great for roll racing.
What if u have stock engine and have 2 step and anti lag would the engine broke?
maybe it is the transmission oil seal or main engine seal. replaced mine in my gen 3..
Does Anti-Lag work with non turbo engine? Like atmosphere bmw e36 ?
So basically 2-Step is sort of a rev limiter for launch (1st gear), so it uses the maximum possible torque for launch without spinning?
