Ditto to the comments on this post. I have only seen archived episodes of the Burns and Allen show and they were so very funny and clever. Gracie was a comic genius and anyone wanting to get into comedy today would do well to study her...deeply. She had much to give to comedy and was well deserving of any and all awards bestowed to her whether she received them when alive or posthumously. She was one of a kind and comedy is and was back then richer for her talent and "grace."

Gracie Allen was one of the most chic women in this history of television. She never looked anything less than fabulous. Her comedic genius did not rely on funny faces, goofy costumes or coarse dialogue. She was always a lovely lady, albiet eccentric and unfailingly warm-hearted. Who could not love her?

Her heart was fragile for a long time, she was very tired in her last years of performing. George helped me so much by something he said about Gracie, he said because of her health they got twin beds, after her death her empty bed was a heart breaking, his doctor told him to sleep in her bed. My husband died from a heart attack at 45 his empty chair at the table was difficult for myself and children, after I heard George tell Johnny Carson about sleeping In Gracie’s bed, I made my son sit in Dad’s chair so it wasn’t so painful for us. 😢

George and Gracie's show remains a treasured childhood memory. I think one reason for their success in TV is that they had had so many years of experience in vaudeville and radio perfecting their craft. That may be true for a lot of comedy shows in the 50s. The performers were not newbies and the personal chemistries were already proven..

When they started out, George delivered the punch lines and Gracie did the set-ups. He noticed that the audience so loved her that she could get a laugh even while delivering the straight set-up lines, and immediately had her switch positions with him: he would be logical and reasonable and set up the jokes, and she would deliver the punchlines. They were instantly successful and he said it was the smartest thing he ever did. He was completely devoted to her. I looked forward to watching their show probably more than any other series when I was little.

My family was too poor to own a tv back in the day, so I'm enjoying her for the first time now. She was certainly one of a kind. I love watching and laughing at her jokes and antics. I adored Gracie!! True story: I used Gracie's TV recipe for pot roast the first time my mother-in-law - a gourmet cook - came to visit. While I did use the recipe my butcher gave me, my fail-safe was adding Gracie's recipe that she shared with Blanche, her neighbor, (the always wonderful Bea Benedaret): You take a big roast and a small roast. You put them in the oven. When the small roast is burnt, the big roast is done! My mother-in-law loved my roast, and always asked for my recipe. I always forgot to send it to her. BTW, the dogs next door really loved the burnt small roast!

When I was young and I heard George speak about Gracie, it was clear the love he had for her
I didn't see the show or Gracie until years later, and I saw the chemistry between them. They truly worked seamlessly as a team together, and though much of the show displayed them playing off of each other, you still could see George's heartfelt love and admiration for his partner, Gracie. Actors, actresses, and comedians of today could take a clue from them.
What a treasure we lost in Gracie Allen, and then later in George Burns. Genuine humor and talent and no profanity. And lastly, for the women's libbers, it takes an extremely high intellect to play a ditzy person and make it appear Genuine. Gracie Allen showed true class, poise, and was nobody's subordinate. She had a career when George met her, and they formed a "team". They made each other bigger stars than they would have been on their own.
Rest on now, Gracie and George. You both are missed, and hopefully they will keep playing your shows, so future generations can see how two class acts did it, and maybe they will come to miss you too!

“George Burns tells a wonderful story about the one time in his life (so he says) he cheated on his beloved Gracie. He was so disgusted and ashamed of himself that he went out and bought her the most beautiful diamond necklace he could find. Gracie was pretty sure she knew what was wrong, but she accepted the necklace and said nothing. Several years passed. One night, she and George were out to dinner and an acquaintance complimented her on her lovely necklace. As George stood there, aghast, she replied, 'Thank you. I wish George would cheat on me again so I could get the matching earrings.”

He'd ask Gracie, " Hows your uncle?" and she'd go on for 20 minutes while he smoked his cigar. My favorite line of hers was in one of their movies when she told George she couldn't wait to see her nephew because he had 3 feet. George replied, " He has 3 feet?" and she answered, " Yes my sister said you won't believe it when you see Johnny, he's grown another foot".

Gracie had an amazing ability. She memorized every line in a script. Whoever set the joke up had to do it spot on every time because even one word incorrectly said could ruin the punchline. The other thing is that business on set, such as her crocheting, was really being done. Many a piece was completed while the cameras rolled.

The story George liked to tell was that when he first worked with Gracie, they did the conventional deal of having him be the zany one while she was the straight woman. The thing was that audiences were stone silent when George delivered his zany lines but were in hysterics when Gracie delivered her straight lines. Then it struck him that their act would bring the house down if GRACIE said the zany lines while George said the straight lines- and it WORKED!
It should be mentioned that they adopted two children and she was a devoted mother to them. Gracie had badly burned one of her arms as a small child and always wore long sleeves to hide the scars and avoided athletic activities that would have required her to expose her arm. However, unbeknown to George or their kids, she secretly took swimming lessons and one day did a beautiful swan dive then swam the length of their pool JUST to show the kids that if SHE could learn to swim, so could they! It worked but, despite her family's pleas, she would never again put a toe into the pool and left the swimming to George and the kids!

I was born in '56, way too young to see any of the George Burns and Gracie Allen show and was only 8 years old when she died, but my Grandparents were big fans of the Burns and Allen radio program and when my Mom bought her first tv, a black and white Philco, they were able to watch some of the programs till the tv show went off the air. I remember seeing George Burns do stand up and thought he was very funny, but my folks said he wasn't the same without Gracie. That said, they still loved his comedy. The last time I saw George Burns in anything was in Oh God/You Devil, even though he did make a couple more movies after that, which, sadly, I missed. When he died at the ripe old age of 100, I didn't mourn. He had a long and exciting life adventure even though he spent the last 32 years (almost as long as his marriage) without his beloved Gracie. I can only imagine the look on her face and what their exchange was when they were finally reunited in heaven. I'll bet it would have left heaven roaring with laughter.

Thank you so much for sharing your talent, while exhibiting Gracie's. I remember both actors, a little vaguely, and laughing at the actions they put the audience into. They were delightful and hysterically funny. Thanks again for the memories you brought out!!!

In his book, George says Gracie was dating someone else but when she was in the hospital, the boyfriend wasn’t there for her but George was so she realized he was a nice man who was in love with her. It had taken awhile for her to decide he was the one but George knew right away.
