  • The Tragic Ending Of Gracie Allen, Saddest Day in George Burns' Life.
Remember George Burns and Gracie Allen? Gracie Allen is a dancer, a team of 2. Met and married George Burns and became a comedian to form an act, Burns and Allen. One of the funniest women ever. She is one of the giants of radio, television, stage performances.

Even though they'd end their routines with George going 'Say Goodnight, Gracie', Gracie NEVER actually replied 'Goodnight, Gracie' but instead simply uttered a surprisingly bashful 'Goodnight' to the audience.

I still remember hearing the news bulletin on the radio in August 1964 - what a sad day. I loved her and there really hasnt been anyone to take her place in all the time s8nce. A true original.

Even though her family put the birth year on her tombstone as '1902' oddly,George claimed not to have known exactly how old Gracie was. From her family's census records, etc., it appears she actually had been born around 1895- making her OLDER than George! Regardless of her actual age, George never lost his affection for her- and when he died in 1996 at the age of 100, he was buried next to her with the the inscription altered to 'Gracie Allen and George Burns- Together Again'!
BTW, even though she suffered migraines for many years severe enough to require hospitalization and being an a dead silent dark room, Gracie somehow would will herself to go straight from the hospital to the radio/television stage to perform then BACK to the hospital! She only missed ONE radio performance when she found herself unable to overcome the migraine but there was a last-minute substitute performer who did Gracie's zany comedic role flawlessly with Gracie's high-pitched inimitable accent with none of the listening audience being wiser. The performer's name- Jane Wyman [of all people]!

I like the reruns of her in charge she was really funny it's a shame with all her talents and knowledge I'd ever gave her an Emmy she deserved it and the show at least one of each it just shows you who was popular but to me they're always be a George and Gracie

So, according to this, she was born in 1895 and died in 1964 but died at "age 62?" Is basic math beyond people these days? LOL

@1:25 they make her 6 years younger than George.

That would have made her a year older than George who was born in 1896. 1902 sounds more realistic.

Gracie Allen's, birth records were lost during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and when she got replacement papers ( lucky for her) the year of birth was wrong. This bit of history came to light years after her death, it's in a couple of, George Burns, books. But, yes she was 69 years old when she died not 62. 😊

George said Gracie was the brains behind the act and that he never would have came to anything without her. Before he met and partnered with her, he was struggling. After they collaborated their career went in one direction and kept rising and only stopped when Gracie retired. They became very popular and headlined major vaudeville houses. George admitted that Gracie was always the main draw and he never would have came to anything without her. At first it strictly platonic, but they married one year later. "They were married on January 7, 1926, onstage at the Palace Theatre in Cleveland by a justice of the peace." (Wiki) In the thirties they had great success in films and later went into radio. 7:00 They became even more popular, when Allen announced that she was running for president of the United States and they put jokes in the skits about it. They turned later to TV. Their TV show ran for 9 years. They could have continued with it. The show was very popular, but they had to stop because of Gracie's health. George tried continuing without Gracie but the show was canceled after 6 months. Without Gracie it wouldn't work. Gracie was a devote Catholic. George did not convert, but he attended Catholic religious services with her and the children as a family.

The story George liked to tell (which I think was likely true) was that when they first started performing, they did the conventional deal of having George the man being the zany one while Gracie the woman being the straight person but he noticed that with HER high-pitched and unique delivery, the audience was laughing at HER straight lines. . .while giving crickets to his zany lines. Then he realized that if they flipped the convention and had him be the straight person with HER be the zany one, their routines would be an enormous hit- and they WERE!

The computer-generated narration is unnatural and annoying. In addition, Allen was encrypted in a mausoleum, not buried.

That's a lie. He admitted in his book that he cheated on her only once. (a serial cheated would never have the humility to admit it,). Gracie knew about it and forgave him. He loved her and continued to love her right up until his own death. If Gracie was here and she heard the bile coming out of your mouth she'd put you right on her list (if you knew anything about Gracie Allen or George Burns you'd know what that meant). She was protective of George and they adored each other. Have some respect!
