i find it poetic that Martinet's last VA role was as Mario and Luigi's father in the Mario movie. Even more so were the last lines that he said, "These are my boys!" as their dad, and the classic "Wahoo!" as Jump Man. Truly the end of an era.

I'm told that he's still got upcoming credits in things? So he might not be retiring from voiceover completely. Probably just things that require falsetto.

I met Charles Martinet with my girlfriend in 2021 when the pandemic was still in full swing. He had a huge background display with warp pipes and the whole thing, Mario music blasting on a loop all day. I think it drove the other celebrities crazy but he was loving it. There was a girl dressed as Yoshi in front of us and he went on for a really long time about how much he loves her costume. When we got up to him he greeted us with all of his voices and scribbled all over the autograph with doodles and Wahoo!'s.
He signed my name with "Super" in front of it and started to sign "Super Princess" in front of hers, but stopped for a second and asked if it was too much and if she'd be okay with the princess added. She said "you can write absolutely anything you want". His eyes lit up and that's when the scribbling started. He came out from behind the Covid screen to take a bunch of pictures with everybody in every pose he could think of, and he thanked us like it was an honour to meet us instead of the other way around.
When he gave the interview stating he wanted to play Mario until he drops dead, I believed him because it doesn't seem like he's even able to turn the voices off, he lives every single one of those characters full-time.
We were just excited about the autograph but he went so far above and beyond for everybody and just from meeting him I'm still in disbelief that he's stepping down from it. I wish him the best and I'll miss him like crazy. If you meet him in person, you'll instantly be a little kid again. I want all the success in the world for his successor(s) but Charles will always be our Super Mario.

I met Charles at a convention back in 2018. I fully expected the line to be super long and wait ages to meet him; but to my surprise, there was no line at all. As I nervously walked right up to a man I never thought I'd get to meet, I noticed the line wasn't completely empty after all. A little boy in a wheelchair was at the front, and Charles was beaming down at him as they discussed their favorite Mario games and moments with so much enthusiasm. What always stuck with me is how Charles didn't sound rushed at all. He seemed overjoyed to speak to this kid for as long as he wanted because he could see how happy it made him. I felt bad for walking up so that I could meet Charles too 😅 He's the real deal, and I can't wait to see him again next month!

Charles Martinet pretty much formed Mario's entire character. Mario's jolly and happy-go lucky personality was entirely from Martinet's belief that Mario should always be uplifting and encouraging. My wife proposed to me with a beautiful piece of wall art that she made. It was an 8-bit depiction of the classic Super Mario Bros. game where Mario hits the question block and she made it so that a wedding ring was popping out instead of a coin. Then in the font it was asking me to marry her. I obviously said yes because who wouldn’t?!
Fast forward to last December at GalaxyCon in Columbus and we met Charles. We brought the now-framed proposal wall art and showed it to him. He was absolutely overjoyed! He was gushing all over it and asking us so many questions and congratulations galore! He then took it out of the frame and autographed ALLL over it! “You numba one!” “Yippee!” “Woo-hoo!!! Super Chris!” He then wanted to make a video with us in it showing how video games bring people together and wanted to post it on his Instagram story. He spent SO much time with us (despite a very long line of fans waiting) and made us feel like the only people in the room. It was like saying hi to an old friend. Genuinely one of the kindest individuals I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting! One of my all-time favorite memories I shall cherish for the rest of my life!

Charles retiring feels like something we all knew was going to happen but never wanted to admit. I’m glad I got to grow up with him as my Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi. I’m optimistic about the future and wish him the best.
Not mad about the new Kermit voice, it’s more so why the previous voice actor was fired that rubbed me the wrong way.

While I knew it was going to be inevitable, I just didn't think it would happen so soon.
I mean, as far as we know, Charles wasn't sick or anything, he still seems to have a lot of energy for his age... so unless there's something behind the scenes we don't know about, like Charles being more exhausted by the voice work than we would expect, then I don't know why he would stop.

I met Charles years ago at DC Awesome Con. Really cool dude, I remember standing in line and he didn't break character once. It was cool listening to him switch characters, he did a Mario voicemail for the guy in front of me and then did immediately switched to Luigi when I wanted an autographed picture of him!

I met Charles Martinet at E3 several years ago. I was working in Nintendo's booth because a game I had worked on was being featured there. Thanks to this fact I was exploring Nintendo's booth before the floor opened up for attendees, and I was standing in a short line with other workers to get a picture of myself in front of one of Nintendo's big character dioramas.
Right before it was my turn, Charles approached me and kindly asked if he could cut in front, since he was short on time and had something to attend shortly. I was happy to let him, since it only cost me about 15 seconds of time but allowed me to do a little favor for the guy who had voiced Mario for most of my life. He was quite grateful and friendly.
Over the course of the day there at Nintendo's booth he was in and out, meeting with workers and attendees, but always surrounded by people who were happy to meet him... and as much as I could see, friendly and kind to each one of them.
That day I also ran across him while I was headed to the bathrooms and he was leaving them. I only gave a smile and a nod, since I didn't want to interrupt his day. The bathrooms at E3 are pretty awful.

As requested, my Charles Martinet story:
I went to NYC when they re-opened Nintendo NYC as Nintendo World in Feb 2019 with my wife and brother-in-law. Martinet was there to autograph and meet fans, etc. but he also went through the line (which was wrapped all over Rockefeller Center) at one point and was high fiving his way through the line to encourage us to continue to brave the cold for the new store opening. So cool!!!
... Except I had gone to the bathroom. He high-fived my brother-in-law, but I missed him. Which was a bummer.
Fast forward 6-8 hours when we FINALLY made it into the store. Martinet was still there signing, but they had long cut the line off for that - I wasn't getting my childhood copy of Luigi's Mansion signed, so that broke my heart a bit too. But during my shopping, I was in the right place at the right time - Martinet was finally being escorted to the back of the store by Nintendo World staff (which I'm not certain he really wanted, but he had already stayed way past the times they'd advertised) and there was the strangest lull in commotion. I was maybe 10 ft from Martinet and his makeshift body guards. They looked terrified that I was about to tackle him for an autograph or something, his face was pretty neutral. I just smiled and waved, unsure of what else to do. After all, I didn't wanna be *that guy* and it had to have been a long day for him.
To my delight, he gave a big smile and "Wahoo!" and waved back without breaking stride and I like to think that he appreciated my lack of aggression in that moment. I'll never really know, but as everyone always says, he seemed like a really nice guy.

This is a big change because we're not just getting a different Mario VA, but also different voices for Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi. I’ve met him twice now and I must say, he is just a joy to be around. He always carries that Mario energy with him anywhere he goes. As for him having difficulty doing the voice nowadays? Nah, he does it constantly at cons and it sounds 100% on point still.
Athena cynical part of me worries that this was not his choice; he’s made it clear in the past that he wants to voice Mario until he “drops dead”. Seriously, there’s an IGN article about it if you look it up! I don’t even think it was that long ago. But who knows, maybe he has a health issue that worried Nintendo enough that they made a decision together to have him retire or something. I just hope he’s happy with these decisions!

I'm glad he's still apart of the brand. He very much loved Mario, so it's nice to see he can retire, but still remain apart of Mario's legacy. This kind of makes me think Charles simply wanted to retire due to how taxing voice acting can be. If it was a Nintendo call, he probably would have been out of the company entirely, but he received a new position within the Mario brand, which to me sounds like something they created because they WANTED Charles around as they know how beloved he is. Regardless, Thank you, Charles Martinet for bringing love and life to very special characters. You told us we were numba one, when no one else would.❤

I think the biggest thing when it comes to switching voice actors is when the character has an established voice - and every subsequent voice is essentially an impression of that first attempt. Like with Kermit, Mickey Mouse, and what Charles Martinet established with Mario, in that situation, it's just change, you'll have to get over it, makes sense. Each person is going to pulling different aspects of that original voice based on the qualities of their own voice but the base it trying to be the same. What I can't blame anyone on is when a new voice changes the entire direction or approach to the character, like with Sonic, or when we went from the Super Show version of Mario to the voice he has now. Each voice comes with a whole new character and edge that appealed to whoever became a fan of that particular version.
I think the one exception for me to the first scenario is Old Man Xehanort in Kingdom hearts. Everyone who came after Leonard Nimoy really is trying their best to do the voice but you just can't replicate Nimoy's Galvatron voice with years of smoking added on top, it just isn't going to happen. Now the old man is Doc Brown and it's definitely not in even the same range as Nimoy, but his was a voice made under specific circumstances so I don't blame the new voices for that. It helps that KH3 was the send off for the character but I can't help but hear that gravely delivery every time one of the not-Nimoy Xehanorts talk. Those lines really were meant for him.

In 2016, Charles stopped me at a comic con one time and asked for a photo of my cosplay. My outfit was of Hornet Man from Mega Man 9, but as my first/only cosplay, the helmet was tight and the foam reduced my hearing while there. He took the picture, smiled, and thanked me as he strolled away.
Shortly after he was gone, my friends told me he was recording video and was asking for me to dance around. Standing 3ish meters away I didn't hear a thing from him. I was quite embarrassed that I just stood there looking like a doofus in front of someone I looked up to but hey, now I have more of a story to tell.

The first video game I remember ever playing was Mario 64, when I was 3 years old. I didn't know much about the world back then, but it's because of Charles Martinet that I knew what joy (or at least happiness) sounded like: "Wahoo!" "Okeydokey!" "It's-a-me, Mario!" These words (among many others, of course) were what I had the privilege of listening to whenever I turned on my N64, and I think that this Mario is a big part in helping me become who I am today. You know, the more I think about Charles' final role being in the Mario Movie, the more I start to tear up.
First off, he voiced the Jumpman look-alike. Mario questioned whether his "fake Italian accent" was too much, but Jumpman assured him that it was perfect. I personally see this as Charles assuring *himself.* He knew that he was perfect for Mario's role earlier in the series, even though he was extremely nervous at his first audition for his role in Super Mario 64.
Also, Jumpman *is* Mario, so this can be seen as a "going full circle" moment.
Another part I'm crying over is Mario's dad.
He canonically said the last words Charles spoke in his voice acting career:
    "These are my boys".
That was more than his last line; that was a STATEMENT. Mario and Luigi weren't just his personas, they were his labor of love.
Watching that movie again after I heard this sad news, I just couldn't control myself.

Back in 2017 me and my friend went to a convention that he happened to be at and we stopped and said hi. It was a couple minutes before he was supposed to leave, but he still mustered the energy to do some voices and answer questions. Me and her had been friends since kindergarten and were raised on the Wii. She even had a mario themed birthday when she was younger. We had seen interviews with him, but it was still such a surprise to find out that Charles Martinet really is just as delightful in person. It was like we were talking to Mario himself. My friend passed away a couple years ago, and that same year Charles Martinet had come back into town for another convention. I know he gets told all the time how much joy and fun he spreads with his voice acting, but I really don't think he'll ever understand just how much it means to people. Every "Wah-ha" and "Yahoo" has been burned into my memory, reminding me of all the time I used to spend watching my friend play Mario Galaxy after school. Though they're big shoes to fill, I'm excited someone new gets the chance to. It really is more than just voice acting.

I do definitely recommend meeting him at a con if you can! I went to a con and I'm not sure if it was because it was early or they had a bigger guest or something, but there was nobody in his autograph line, so I snaked all the way through and went up, even though the price for the autograph was a bit more than I wanted to spend. He greeted me with a huge smile as if I was a family member he hadn't seen in ages, and I couldn't help but smile back. He asked me my name and which characters I liked, and the autograph handler was visibly trying to hurry him along. I picked out a poster for him to sign and he did so with all the animation and heart you'd expect from his videos, writing along the border and voicing the things he wrote, and adding a smiley face, and having a grand ol' time! I can't help but be brought back to that moment every time I look at that poster on my wall, and smile thinking about how much energy and light he has brought and continues to bring to the world.
