Watch the original video uninterrupted: âą Creep - Vintage Postmo...
I know, I know... how is it possible that I have not seen this performance yet!? If it helps, by the time this video posts I'm sure I'll have watched Haley Reinhart sing Creep a dozen more times. Here is my reaction to her and Postmodern Jukebox and their cover of Radiohead's Creep.
#radiohead #reaction #vocalcoach - Hudba
This is the first and only take they did.
This version was initially made for another singer but Haley loved it so much that she played around with it by herself. After a long day of recording during a day off during their tour Scott asked if she wanted to give it a try. She hesitated because her voice was pretty tired ar that point but he convinced her... And after that first take he said there was absolutely no need to do another. And no wonder because that... That's magic!
Thank you for that story!!
I've heard the one-take story is apocryphal: It was two. :-)
@@kkob People keep adding stuff to the story that wasn't there to begin with but I'm pretty sure I saw an interview with Scott Bradlee about it and he said it was the first take... but I can't seem to find that interview now so take it with a pinch of salt I guess =)
@@antivanti First, second? Not a huge difference. Either way, one of the best vocal performances in history and a miracle as either a first or second no-edits take, eh?
Anders is correct, Scott said Haley was tired from singing all week and recording that day but did it in one take. Haley has performed this song with PMJ live on stage so it's not like she went in without practice.

As I have stated before . This is arguably one of the greatest performance ever recorded.

It's almost as if someone took Betty Boop and combined her with Jessica Rabbit... This takes the whole style of music back to the roaring 20's. Haley and PMJ are MAGIC together.

Filmed in black and white was a perfect choice. Haley Reinhart's vocals add all the color I can manage. WOW! What a performance.
I had never heard her before I saw this for the first time. Having no other context, when I saw comments about how she didn't win American Idol, I figured the judges had all clearly lost their minds. I have exactly the same experience listening to this as I do when I listen to some of the greatest violinists, and pianists in the world. It's the equivalent of 'kid in a candy store' for music geeks. So many technical details to dissect and analyze.
There was an enormous voting bloc of young adolescent females that every year voted for only cute white guys. So because Haley was a female, she didn't win. Although she was by far the most talented contestant on American Idol that season. In fact, she is one of the best contestants to have ever appeared on American Idol.
@@theblackdog2399 - Definitely your favorite!!
@@theblackdog2399 Cute white guys? American Idol never picks the best singer, once upon a time. Adam Lambert lost, he looks like Elvis, can sing anything, and is Queen's Frontman.
@@theblackdog2399 It wasn't because she was female, it's because the show and judges sabotaged her at every turn. The fact that she managed to finish in third anyway was a sheer testimony to her talent. She was beaten out by two people including another female, Lauren Alaina.
she was really feeling it. She used her entire body to express the lyrics. You were a treat to watch too.
A masterclass in how to utilize every vocal technique known to man in under six minutes. She is amazing.
czcams.com/video/UFZoDV1iy6w/video.html
I've listened for thousand times and will never get bored. She creates tones according to the character she wants to be and I think there are endless options. This performance is proof of the very different performances she will make from now on. â€
The whole other thing here is that she captivates us completely with a single camera angle...no flashy cuts and camera moves or anything other than Haley's singing and exquisite movement. Incredible performance.
"I need to watch that a million times over". Yeah, I have, and it still gets me every single time. I wish her originals had that kind of soul. Not that I don't like her original music, but, there aren't many people in all of musical history who can pull off that 1930s jazz vocal language the way she can. This, and the other songs she did with PMJ were lightning in a bottle. They are the highest viewed videos out of all of their others for a reason. This collaboration was pure sonic magic. I only wish it had lasted longer.
My favorite version of this song. It might be one of the best female vocalizations Iâve heard. Thank you for covering it.
Well, I've listened to this countless times and still come to tears every single time. This is absolute mastery. She masters her instrument in a way that can only be equated with the very greatest. I can hardly wait for her to come back to Europe, to see her live.
Quite simply, a Masterclass on singing expression and technique, all rapped up in a Jessica Rabbit costume. Simply perfect.
I'm blown away by this performance everytime and I listened to it gazillion times. This is such a vocal masterclass, she did so many different things in one song that some singers don't do in their whole career đ
Check out her other PMJ performances..."Seven Nation Army"; "Habit"; "Don't Speak"; "All About The Bass"; "Black Hole Sun"; plus some of her own videos..."Don't Know How to Love You"; "Better"; and the list goes on. IMO, she's the most talented female artist on the Planet...Angelina Jordan and others are great, but her versatility really outshines them all !!
To be fair, Angelina Jordan is half her age. Having said that, my dream coop would be Angelina, Haley and Morgan James on ... well: any song.
She can blow, her chops are awesome. She can take it outside whenever she wants to. That arrangement, sweet and sensitive when they want it to be, and greasy as hell at the flip of a switch.
The dance of microexpressions across your face throughout this performance was every bit as entertaining as what you were watching!
She sings from her soul â€ïž
Just imagine, Scott Bradlee decided to redo 2 videos in his catalog. All About That Bass and Creep. He has a day off in his European tour, with a tired Haley Reinhart. So he rents a studio in Zurich. He Records All About That Bass with Haley as one of the leads, recods Style with Haley as one of the backup singers. An then, when she's good and tired, he convinces to do Creep.
Haley wasn't happy with the first take, but Scott was, and it was a wrap.
Creep and All About That Bass have become #1 & #2 videos for PMJ.
And it you're unsure still about Haley's growth since AI, listen to her rendition of Don't Speak.
I love watching people's faces as they react to this performance! I feel ya.
Just saw Haley perform at the Troubadour in L.A. a few weeks ago. She's better than ever. I call her the Swiss Army Knife of vocalists. There's literally nothing she can't sing and be fantastic at it.
Total performance, visually, vocally, the whole package. Here Haley demonstrates 14 of the 9 human vocal techniques. Her ability to switch between that grunge and pure clarity is astonishing. Loved that and the reaction!!
That was years ago, she was a young lady back then. She is now in the league of the torch bearers from the past, a talented woman moving forward as she wants and on her own terms. Her influence is already showing up in many aspiring artist today.
She shows that programs like American Idol, The Voice, and AGT have nothing to do with choosing the best talent. Astounding performance.
Haleyâs Tour just started sheâs wonderful.
Her cover of White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane is one of my favourite covers she has done. She really nailed the feel that Grace Slick puts into the song while also making it her own.
That, I have to hear!
Haley is the best unknown artist in the world, she has a new album out and its great , her PMJ Cover of don't speak is a sweat performance .enjoyed your reaction to this song thumbs up đ
Towards the end you say you couldn't have foreseen this from her American Idol days...go back and check out her House of the Rising Sun performance. Then you'll see this growth was inevitable.
You definitely wanna check out her Seven Nation Army next. Itâs equally amazing âșïž
I discovered Haley not to long ago here on youtube. Did not know she was on American Idol because I don't watch it. Her voice is amazing! I love her cover of Creep and she does two other covers which are equally amazing. "Seven Nation Army" and "Black Hole Sun".
Haley Reinhardt is no cartoon. She is very real, and I love her performances - especially, this one.
That was done in one take and she was actually sick.
đ€Ż
@@TheVocalyst - Bethany, this rumor is hard to quench, but even Scott Bradlee says that she wasn't sick at all, just tired from touring and recording two other videos on their day off in Zurich, Switzerland. It was shot in one take, however.
This performance is 6 years old. Check her current outstanding quality and maturity in the more recent videos, like Don't Speak and Can't find my way home
This is a purely amazing version, she manages to elevate this song 1000% to sheer perfection. I've listened to it at least 500 times by now and will continue to listen to it for the rest of my days I'm sure.
That performance blew me away! I will be very surprised if I ever hear a better version of that song. She is something special.
Haley reengineered this song by Radiohead and made it her own. So many mood, and wide range changes. A masterpiece.
I love watching vocal coaches watch her sing. The ranges she can reach drives them nuts. Lol
Everything is so easy for Haily, . just georgeous vocally, . .
I love this performance, in part because it feels like Haley is *playing*, trying out every single weird and glorious noise she's capable of making with her voice. It's just marvelous, because she's clearly having fun with the whole thing.
This has to be the best One Take Recording in the history of the world !!!
Just Pure Magic !!
Once upon a time, I was so indifferent to this song, and then this happened. Nothing else to say. btw, Scott is a genius.
This song/video was THE reason I got into PMJ back in the day. Soooo alluring and sensual.
"she didn't win American Idol" because most talent competition are popularity contests. After several years, a pattern started showing up to such an extent it birthed an acronym "WGWG" was created, that is "White Guy With Guitar". It was clear the largest voting block was young to middle aged country music loving women. Haley's season, they lowered the age to allow 15 year olds to compete. Idol promoted the bejesus out of two 15 year old country singers, a boy and a girl. Haley was cast ostensibly as 'cannon fodder', relegated to near elimination at least 3 times on the bottom 3, the two 15 year olds were never in danger of elimination.
At the point Haley survived elimination & started building a fan base from eliminated contestants, the show clearly instructed the judges to criticize only Haley's performances whether she got standing ovation from the crowd or not. Haley persevered to make it to 3rd place, unable to overcome to producer's picks for the Finale. Haley's ultimate thought about her Idol journey was she wanted to at least build a fan base to springboard her career as a professional singer. This really ended up informing her decision to be an independent artist, not relying on others, making her own decisions, having confidence in her abilities regardless of outside opinion, and she's still running strong 11 years later.
I have a "Haley's Journey" trilogy featuring all of Haley's Idol performances and the judge's reactions in a playlist that also includes a few of Haley's first live concerts. Do a search for "Haley's Journey", 3 1-1/2 hour videos. âđ»
@Haleys Tusk - Thank you for being the complete and true compiler of all things Haley Reinhart. I certainly appreciate the time and effort you put in chronicling Haley's journey for other fans to read, listen to, and admire.
She's a LEGIT singer! She knows all the tricks of the trade!
We all knew you would love this performance. It was like waiting for one of our favorite people to finally open up that. perfect Christmas present
Sheâs almost, but not quite, at Angelina Jordanâs level..thatâs a real compliment.
@@kevingood4644 I would reverse that order, but both are wonderful talents.
@@DWilliams-ce8nb To that I would say itâs not a competition..thereâs room enough for both in our hearts.
@@kevingood4644 Wait. Huh? You ranked 'em. I have a different opinion. lol
Dear Ms. Vocalyst, keep it up! I appreciate you. That is all.
I still got goosebumps.
She's done a lot of work for PMJ and solo. A couple of tours with PMJ also. I still think she should have won Idol the year she was on.
She's in total control of her instrument!
I am also amazed by Haley's voice. Your reaction was great to watch.
I have seen every performance of Haley online and in person many times. She is this and so much more live, i highly recommend if you ever have the chance.
She is also a 1950s style pin up model and she sings this like a pin up model posed back in the day.
I think this was my definition of captivating
...just crazy

"I need to watch this a million times..."
/me actually clocking in his 1 millionth watch.
I once quipped "she sings in cursive" which I stand by.
@Michael Law - Oh, boy, can I steal your description of how Haley "sings in cursive?" Perfect way to describe her style!!
Finally!!... now you are ready to check Don't Speak (No Doubt's cover) with Haley and PMJ. Success!!
even her breaths are beautiful
The evolution of Haley's vocals and artistic expression is I agree so fabulous to witness ! This woman is a captivating and mesmerizing performer ! A lounge singer right out of the 40's reminding me of a different era when singers were performing artists ! Such a powerful lamenting character she is able to exhibit so naturally and draws you into her world ! Haley has become a fabulous singer and she is in her element so comfortably in jazz ! Loved your wonderful reaction and great analysis of this beautiful singer ! Thanks Bethany for this ! This was a special moment ! đđđšđŠđšđŠâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž

I watched it a million times over. I love it.
Absolutely superb piano by Scott Bradlee on the opening. Delicate yet crystal clear slice of sound.
Fantastic reaction! Haley just owned this version and her superb vocal ability overwhelms. I'd also suggest checking out PMJ with Haley doing Seven Nation Army and then Don't Speak. Absolutely amazing. Enjoy!
I second this suggestion. Here's the link for PMJ and Haley performing SNA: czcams.com/video/sB6HY8r983c/video.html
bout time, i knew you would have a hard time stopping this one lol
Haley has been a favorite female singer for me for a very long time. She has amazing breath control and her tone is exquisite. She brings out emotions I didn't even know was possible and she plays us with her body language. She is really truly gifted artist that knows how to pull off every thing she puts into the performance!!!! âŁâŁâŁ
Please keep going with PMJ and Haley's journey with Puddles Pity Party and Haley Reinhart singing, "MAD WORLD"!!!

It is always enlightening to watch these vocal coach reactions to Haley performing Creep. Since I am only an appreciator and not a technician of music, I really appreciate being told why I like it...
Mel torme is in awe of Haley. RIP Mel the King of scat
Itâs hard to describe something so wonderful..
It brings tears to my eyes every time. If I could only listen to 5 songs, for the rest of my life, this would be one of them. Haley was perfect. Great reaction, thanks!
Need to watch her cover of Seven Nation Army by white stripes. A must watch!!!!!
Haley was one of my favorites from her season on American Idol. She is wonerfully unique in the modern landscape of music.
my most favourite from postmodern jukebox channel
When someone ask me what is an orgasm, an orgasm is listening to this version of the song and getting goosebumps. Its incredible what an amazing artist.
Wanna hear harmonies that'll give you goose bumps? Listen to Haley Reinhart and Morgan James impromptu acoustic home recording of the Beatles song "Dear Prudence". It's heartbreakingly beautiful. Both are vocal powerhouses, and when they get together it's just pure magic.
Don't forget Morgan's husband, Doug Wamble, providing the subtle, yet beautiful acoustic guitar accompaniment, too!
PMJ (Post Modern Jukebox) enrolled so many talents for different style covers. You could have a closer look to Haley or Morgan James, Robyn Adele Anderson, Casey Abrams, Sarah Niemietz, Olivia Kuper Harris, HannahGill, Ariana Savalis, Von Smith and many many more ;)
When it comes to PMJ, there is Haley Reinhart and only Haley Reinhart. As Haley Reinhart put PMJ on the map and no one else ever did.
@@theblackdog2399 That is SO not true. Yes, this song in particular gave them a HUGE jump in popularity, but they've been ON their game, artistically, for a long time before HR. Scott Bradlee is a fine-but-not-mind-blowing pianist, but an absolute freaking genius at two things: arranging, and choosing the people to perform his arrangements. A deep dive into the back catalog will be rewarding.
@@RolandTumble23 Not only is Haley Reinhart the best performer to have ever performed with PMJ, dimwit, but prior to the arrival of Haley Reinhart, all PMJ ever played was tiny venues and cheap dives.
Then after Haley arrived on the scene and quickly recorded several music videos that all went viral, suddenly PMJ was filling coliseums and arenas.
As it was Haley Reinhart and no one else that put PMJ on the map and turned Scott Bradlee into a freaking millionaire. In fact, the entire reason why and how Scott Bradlee became a millionaire is because of Haley Reinhart turned PMJ viral.
The years Haley performed with PMJ were PMJ's glory years and ever since she quit them, they have been slowly going back down. As the product they put on the stage today, isn't remotely close to the product they put on the stage when Haley was performing with them.
Had Haley Reinhart never showed up to record and perform for PMJ, PMJ to this day would still be playing only tiny venues and cheap dives and Scott Bradlee would still be barely eking out a living.
Not only that wingnut, but the irrefutable proof is in the CZcams views. As Haley's music videos have almost as many CZcams views as the rest of the shitty PMJ performers that have performed with PMJ combined.
Just because your taste in music sucks to high heaven loon, don't assume everyone else has piss poor taste in music like you do.
Now prove me wrong moonbat. Indeed, cite another PMJ performer that remotely has as many CZcams views as Haley Reinhart. Go ahead, wingnut, make my day.
@@theblackdog2399 Wow. You are un-freakin'-believable. I don't think I've EVER had anyone go SO hard on the ad hominem personal attacks over a difference of taste. That's incredibly rude, and further is absolutely uncalled-for.
Plus, you're _demonstrating_ your own dimwittedness, in continuing to confuse popularity with artistic merit when I _specifically_ separated them in my first reply.. Believe it or not they are NOT the same thing.
Don't get me wrong--I'm not knocking HR in any way, shape or form. She is incredibly talented, and _MAY_ indeed be the best singer to ever work with PMJ (though there are other candidates).
*BUT*
1. That has next-to-nothing to do with how manty views the YT videos get, or the size of the venues in which they play live. You are almost certainly correct about the YT view count. So what? That's popularity, not artistic merit. I won't even try to "prove you wrong" on those terms, because it's meaningless in relation to what I had to say.
2. It doesn't invalidate the merit of other performers. Each performance, by each performer, stands or falls on its own. Praising Morgan James, or Puddles the Sad Clown, or ANY other performer, takes nothing away from the value of HR's performances, nor vice-versa.
Failure to recognize these two points puts the validity of your opinion in a great deal of doubt.
I would, frankly, prefer that you simply go away--but that's probably too much to ask. If you DO choose to reply, be sure to begin it with an apology for the needless personal attacks. If you don't , you can expect to be blocked at the very least (no matter what else you say), and I may well look into reporting you for abusiveness. I strongly suspect that this, too, is too much to ask.
@@RolandTumble23 - Appropriately well said response to black dog, thank you.
Top 4 favorite female singers for me are Dolly Parton, Stevie Knicks, Amy Lee and Haley Reinhart 1000%.

You might like Sharon den Adel who I sometimes call the Metal Dolly Parton.
And Emma Heesters who has thicker vocal cords like Haley or Stevie.

I saw Haley live a few nights ago. She was just as incredible live . She is amazing both in sound and the performance.
Haley brought her toolbox and a whole gang box of extras just to make sure that she highlighted all of her skills in one song. I have listened to this rendition more than a hundred times and still find little style choices she made that make this unique. Hailey is a national treasure and is living proof that the talent shows don't know squat.
Love seeing Casey on that base in the background!!!

loved ur reaction to this one ;)
She is AMAZING !!
A perfect performance. I could drown in that voice
"I need to watch this a million times over."
I have.
Master Class performance. Just jaw droppingly perfect.
That scat kills me every time and I love it
I remember her season on American Idol. She didn't even win first place. The whole top ten was insane, but she's probably done more with her opportunity than most of the other performers. BTW, if you get the chance, check out her duet with Jeff Goldblum (yes, that Jeff Goldblum) doing "My Baby Just Cares."
So many textures, and so sassy! I dig this rendition !
This is one of those songs that I wish that I could hear again for the first time. Watching your reaction to her reminds me how I felt the first time I heard it. So many versions of this song out there, but this is one of my favorites.
Absolutely WONDERFUL and perfect version.
She has a phenomenal voice - absolutely love her. I hope she keeps releasing new stuff.
Doesnât get any better, just love that rendition from Haley. Great reactionđ„đ„đ
A masterwork. Ella meets Janis. Perfect interpretation of an outstanding arrangement.
@NYC Lion - What a perfect compliment: "Ella meets Janis" Excellent way to describe Haley's vocals.
Heard this years ago... still great now. The band backing is perfect !
on "feather", she softned the tone, and she used vibrato to further soften the hard r. Haley's vocals range from nasty as hell, to sweet as a toddler. The vocal cries just add more gravy to it.
great breakdown vocalyst. this female vintage interpretation and character embodiment of this classic is absolutely stunning.. just because she is a beautiful woman versus the presubscribed concept of stalker dude of the original by radiohead does not mean she can not be rejected by someone or society as a whole for being her true self and the imperfections that come with that. maybe she is obsessive, jealous or just does not fit the expected submissive girlfriend, wife, etc narrative of that time. all this creates an internal tug of war and debate within herself of what do i need to change for someone (or society) to accept or love her (i.e. be special) vs her loving herself for being authentic (i.e. remain a weirdo). although the specific circumstances are unique for each individual, we have all been there at some point and why so many people can relate to this song.
however, the true masterpiece of the extraordinary performance is really just how well haley reinhart creatively taps all those mixed and conflicting emotions of the lyrics though her expansive and incredible vocals of soft breathiness, cries, belts, growls and scats strategically combined with her movements and facial expressions that creates this crazy push and pull effect that brings all those emotions out of us in both painful and satisfactory ways. her performance is an emotional roller coaster ride with postmodern jukebox providing the theme park underneath her. it's almost like she goes through the 12-steps of rejection and self acceptance in 4 minutes and 55 seconds. it is amazing and will go down as one of the best performances of our time.
Couldn't have said it better. Cheers!
@@ole9421 i actually had the chance to see her perform in person a year ago today and briefly met her before the show with a meet and greet. she is much more petite and soft spoken in person than you would expect considering how big a presence she puts on stage but super genuine and authentic. here is a clip of her finale from my show here: (czcams.com/video/ZUMnEwfm0V4/video.html ) enjoy! đ
