I love your angle on this hard to acquire skill. I've only been able to do the 3 notes on 2 string very slowly and already felt what you explained about the required focus to keep going, that I would need to succeed. WOW,...... great advice for just about anything in life..... but crutial for learning instruments as well. I am just starting to learn guitar after being a drummer for over 20 years. Your term, its alien to the body to learn such small movements is exactly what I am having such a difficult time with since I worked on mastering 4 limbs and a mind with gross motor skills... ... thanks for posting these ideas and lessons. It seems that after watching this video a lot of clicks when off in my mind about over analysing and over thinking the guitar. Everything you said makes sense for sure. Thank you!
Over the years I have examined my own muscle memory at play. I have also noted the day or two lag time from when I hammered myself on a rapid run, not satisfied with my fluidity, and then picking up the guitar again to find I could easily play the progression. The best thing about challenging oneself to play fast, precisely, is that everything you play that is slower becomes easier, I also like to play lead on my acoustic for a bit then pick up the electric, and it feels effortless, the brain is amazing.
I've noticed the two-day lag also. I used to think I was imagining it, but a while back, I saw a neurologist talking about a repetitive action stimulating the body to grow thicker myelin sheaths around the nerves which improves the electrical signal along them. The body takes a little while to do that, but that's what makes the difference that I'd noticed. What's great about that is that it takes away a bit of the nebulousness of 'if you practice you'll get better. Just like you can't stop forty press-ups a day building your muscles, you can't stop repetitive exercises on the guitar from building these neuro-connections that improve your motor skills.
I also find that in my playing as well. Resting for a day or two seems to improve my abilities on a particular picking exercise and the whole thing becomes easier to play with less effort.
If your arm is healthy then you can play every day. I've been suffering from tendinitis for years so that's why I need to rest my arm, hands and fingers. However, when my arm is well rested I actually play better!
Waters best way is overdoing and rest, overdoing and rest onandon...Resting doesnt mean doing nothing...you can focus on other issues in between...it has to do with how muscles grow. You can do some Research on that. Research on how athletes train...not running 100 meters at high-speed from 8 am to 8 pm.
Guitar instructor, "Rote" shall be thy name! lol - I've noticed that many, if not most, of your lessons are based on this rudimentary learning principal... I agree with your method by the way. What you are essentially trying to convey is the necessity to program ones "muscle memory". I discovered the importance of this when I was learning finger picking. Something like Travis picking seems so simple, but trying to get your fingers to do it at speed while you're also singing and trying to remember the changes is pretty much impossible without committing it all to muscle memory. And Rote is the way to do it. Breaking it dow into smaller and smaller chunks and doing it over and over until it's second nature.
Sir...can u please upload a step by step tutorial as to how to move up when making step by step progress..like what to do after mastering the two strings till we achieve perfection...covering all the problems that we face and how to overcome them...
This guy is so super cool, love those exotic gypsy runs he does, they sound so full and rich, he is good enough that he doesn't have to bother learning anymore, he can take what he's already achieved to entertain himself and others from here on out. He's helpfully descriptive and so has it together with being a super teacher and communicator. I wish I could plug myself into him and get some of his energy infused into this 64 year old body.

Ok I’m just doing this , I’m on day 3 of my 30 day chart , practicing a paul Gilbert / MAB style alt picking lick over 2 strings. At the end of 30 days I think I will make another chart and continue . I gained 1 bpm today so 101 bpm 16th notes I did play 102 bpm but it was not as solid , so I will aim to get 102 tomorrow or the next day. I will usually practice a lot 15bpm to 20 bpm lower trying to get that feeling of just gliding effortlessly over the strings. Then go real fast for a bit as fast as possible, then back to slow. Then do something completely different , and then come back to the faster speed .usually at the end of the session you see an improvement .
Claus' passion for his subject is as inspirational as every good teacher's. His exercises are relatively simple but he teaches the "why" that my inner nerd needs as well as the "how". His lessons have helped me organize and incorporate lot's of bits and pieces I learned over the years but didn't know how to use. I can even practice his ideas while watching tv because of the emphasis on feel!! I like girls, just pretty excited by studying at The House Of Claus.

Claus. Is it possible to pay attention to detail like this in practice to alternate picking and still play in a band? What I'm getting at is that there are demands that need to be met to play songs and solos...a lot of times having to play things beyond comfort level, resulting in bad technique in places. Will this hinder my growth in alternate picking? Or do I have to quit the band and lock myself in a room slowly building up for two years?
Claus, do you ever use economy (directional) picking? I learned alternate picking first, and now I'm trying to use directional picking on 3 note per string modal stuff, but just wanted to hear your thoughts, as it has quite a different feel and takes a bit to get used to...
Axe Your Doctor I used to economy pick automatically. Now I switched to alternate picking. It might be harder to master, but at super fast things, I think the brain has a much better time dealing with motions that are in order rather than "random" economy picked notes. And alternate picking also gives you a much crisper sound to every note, economy picked ones may sound a little lighter most of the time, depending on your technique.

I spent two years immersed in economy picking... it had such promise in the beginning as far as speed... now I've completely abandon it... It just never sounded as good as alternate picking. I've been back on alt-picking for about a year now... and I sound much better than I ever did with economy. My timing and consistancy are 100 times better. I think the big lure of economy picking was how easy it is to do the 3 note per string ascending/decending. But that can be done with alt-picking and it sounds so much better... you just have to learn to hurdle over the awkward string changes (if your starting from the low E and going up, its usually the movement to the A, G, and high E) strings. Also, learn to curve your pick movement a bit.
It is not about taking "one" road to things. For 3 note per string things economy/directional picking can't be beat. If you already mastered string crossing with down and upstrokes with alternate picking, you can use it in combination with economy picking and not be bound by the direction your pick is traveling. You can even skip strings during sweeps in any direction wich is a rare thing, even among high level shred guys. So practice both. The trick to economy picking well is to let the pick rest on the next string in the direction you go "before" it is being played (Rest strokes)
