Dream Bike Build Restoration - Blacked-out 1x10 '94 GT Ricochet

  • I love how this bike turned out. I love the blacked out paint and the polished fork. In the disassembly of the bike I wanted to try and restore the Judy XC fork but it was too far gone (I spent a few days trying to restore it without success). That said, I am totally stoked on how well the Answer Manitou EFC fork turned out after rebuilding and polishing it. I was surprised how light of a fork it is and how well, after 24 years it is still working well. Also, it was fun to put a 1x10 drivetrain on this bike using a used XT shadow plus rear derailleur.

Great build. I have seen your other builds, but this one is special to me. My first mountain bike in college was a 1988 GT Tequesta. It is unfortunately a 1 inch head tube so upgrading is not very easy these days. I still have it and went through it top to bottom, repacking bearings and the like. In fact, watching your videos has gotten me back into working on bikes. I forgot just how much fun and therapeutic it can be. And when you are done, you have great finished product that will continue to offer good service for another 30 years if parts hold out. I like your premise and what you do for your local community. Thanks for the journey and I wish you well.

Mark Hosbach Yup, I came to the same conclusion. REALLY nice restoration otherwise.
Carbon saddles don't belong on old school MTBs, not to mention a hard ridden road bike. I'll take my heavy old leather saddles any day. It might weigh 4 .or 5 times as much, but it's 4 or 5 times more comfortable, allowing me to ride 4-5 times longer!
However, saddles are incredibly personal like all the touch points.

To all cursing the saddle - it's more comfy than you can even imagine! Just takes a little while to get used to it. Circa 110 grams is nothing even though in this case it doesn't really matter. And it looks sharp and sexy as hell - a real cherry on the cake! Great job overall!

It is so satisfying to see you take a bicycle that most would have thrown in the trash and make it better than new again!

Where did you get the GT decals? I have a ‘90s GT road bike frame, and would like to get some new decals for it.

I can’t help you but if you’re a bit into graphic design with a program with adobe illustrator and a foil cutter like in printshop you can get it done by yourself

@@D.O.T.U.K I think he's talking about the old tire that was on the bike prior to the rebuild. Tread pattern looks a lot like a Dart to me.

I believe the Ricochet was a steel frame until ‘94. It went to aluminum starting in ‘95. The ‘94 model was first year with threadless stem and last year with steel frame. I own two ‘94 models.
