My history lies with restoring old cars and campervans. When I was recently diagnosed with epilepsy from the presence of an AVM which had caused a brain hemorrhage, I was devasted not only to lose my hobby but my independence. Your videos have been like a lightening-bolt of inspiration, and couldn't have come at a better time fir me. I'm been binge-watching and mulling over all of the opportunities that have always been there, but that I have never considered. This feels like the first thing I've looked forward to trying, in a LONG time. Thank you for the inspiration!

Just want to say thank you for your contribution in my life. Your videos gave me inspiration to rebuild bicycles during this time. I used to ride a lot when I was younger but had a big crash that gave me fears. The pandemic changed that and your videos taught me how to fire up that passion again. I now have three bikes and looking to rebuild a fourth!

I recently bought a 1999 Gary Fisher bike. I paid $100.00 for this sight unseen and I thought it was going to be a simple grease the chain and ride solution. It is not and this video, in addition to researching Gary Fishers history as well as the Marin County bicycle museum offerings for visiting and volunteering are directing my focus more narrowly than in a long time. I feel a little apprehensive about a total reset on this bike as I know nothing about fixing a bike, but this was the most soothing video I have watched in such a long time. I love all the sounds and your voice as well as your encouragement to slow down and go back to old ways. I have no idea where to buy tools, where I am going to work on this but this video gives me strength and hope. Thank you. I will keep watching.

This is by far one of your best. That paint job is 4-dimensional chess and everything from the blue rivets on the 1x to the pedals to the textured seat ... just a great watch. Thank you.

I honestly think, even if you made a 24hr video, I'd watch it all without a break. I'm currently resto-modding a 1995 Marin Pine Mountain (my first serious bike when I was younger) and just deciding on what Spray.Bike paint to go for whilst I'm sanding off the original paint and minor surface rust. Probably brass gold to make the mirror polished original metal parts pop, like the White Industries crankset. So inspiring, you made me start this project, thank you :)

    Gorgeous one, well played, Sir.
I rescued a very well "loved" 97' Big Sur Acid Yellow small frame Genesis geo, from a bike co-op maybe 8 months ago. It quickly became my favorite Mini Mullet, 26x27.5 (2.8) with a Niner fork. It rides so good that I figured I would take it bike packing. Last month it shined on the Black Canyon Trail, AZ and an early season Kokopelli solo trip, really loaded down, cold weather, no food or water caches along the way, heavy. I fully otb cartwheeled it out on Mars one day being reckless, as you do.
While in the air, before finishing my flip and hitting the ground, I was thinking it was game over for the bike. As I walked back up to it, I was trying to compute exactly how far I'd be hiking out, 34 miles? After thorough nervous examination, no worries. I've broken burlier bikes with less impact than that, it's bomb-proof. Those beautiful welds have gone through two "destructive testing facilities" very admirably. "Man's best friend", as it famously says right on it. And for me at least, so far it's a frame you can trust implicitly.
I've a number of great old and newish bikes and this little thing just rips in heinous terrain on par with or better than the rest, titanium included. These are brilliant frames, no doubt. I found it rides so well that I went and grabbed another frame, an immaculate (98/99'?) XS Big Sur frame hanging in the same co-op. This one was built it up for my friends' son who had outgrown his kids bike, a tiny 42lb. anchor with 3 bad gears and no effective braking. It's a beautiful 26er he can ride now and shred Colorado for a long time, upgrade the front end when the time comes. Gary really hit the nail on the head with these bikes. Even for his legendary designs, these came together perfectly in a special way. It's really good to see the absolute love of these "old" bikes shine through the decades. Thank you, we love yer werk. They are indeed, priceless.
    Cheers, gone Fishin'.

Your introduction brought a tear to my eye, the pandemic was awful however it was a time for me to slow down. I stopped riding mountain bikes 6 years ago, the lockdowns helped me dust off my 2013 GT Karakoram I ordered a whole heap of parts online and began working on my bike. I made excuses all these years not to ride like being a Dad, Husband, student , work & many more reasons. I’m now riding 3 times a week before work I’m enjoying every single moment now.

I actually ride one as well. It's a 1991 seeker mega. A dad bike in the truest sense of the word. Its pretty beat to shit from all the trail riding he did BITD but it's still chugging along both in and out of storage. The pandemic also necessitated fixing it to be rideable again. For now I'm just trying to make it nicer to ride bit by bit, I don't really have the money to strip it down and repaint it. Besides, the rust-coated frame lulls me into thinking it helps deter most bike thiefs lmao

Painting question from my 12yr old.
He’s painted the bike (1967 Schwinn Breeze) with Spray.bike and now wants to put Schwinn stickers on the paint. His question; “do I clear coat first then add the stickers or clear coat over the sticker too”?
This is his project and is learning a ton. He bought the bike for $40, tore it down, prepped and painted and almost ready to reassemble (all himself).
Thank you for your videos - they are fantastic!

    • @oldshovel
      @oldshovel  Před 3 lety +3

Awesome awesome awesomeness. With regards to the stickers it can depend on the stickers if they are are made to g work with a clear coat over them. Some will bleed a bit from the clear coat. The safest and easiest to fix is to do the clear coat then place the stickers over the clear. Thanks for sharing about you 12yr old’s project.

It was converted to a single speed, and had many parts, such as the derailleur, pedals, shifter, and for some reason the chain, taken off of it, so I had to go get $175 worth of parts to get it back up and running. I’m currently loving it. It performs amazingly and for $175 has been a great second bike for me.

I really enjoy you videos. You’ve inspired me to get an old Mtb and rebuilt it like you do it in your videos. It is so much fun. Thanks for the great videos and keep on making them rebuild videos!
