    excellent job so far, top colour choice too. Interesting how you had to make some minor fitting adjustments to the tender, i suppose in the end these things are largely a bespoke build for finish and your own standard of completion. Keep the updates coming!

    Hi Chris. I'm working on the differential and having a few problems. I note on video at 5:42 that you have taken the paint off the face of the shaft housing. I assume from this that you have minimal clearance to the back of the inner bevel gear. I have a 2mm gap here. I have ground out the tender strap to clear the gear and changed the top two strap bolts for countersunk socket caps as no body will see them. With the diff centre and the outer bevel gear on, the bevel gear projects beyond the end of the shaft by about 3mm which isn't right. It's all very puzzling. Next step is lots of measuring, There is something definitely wrong somewhere. I put the drive gear on to see how that was lining up and it was looking like the spacer needs to be about 6mm ish longer.
    It's been a while since you last posted. Hope all's well.
    Any ideas gratefully received.
    Jim

    Panic over Chris. After a few hours of measuring and head scratching I decided to go for it. I turned down the hub on the inner bevel gear and now have 0.5mm clearance with the 2nd shaft housing. I didn't realise that the shaft end washer had a shoulder on it. I increased the recess and now have 15 thou (back to imperial) of end play. I now need to make a final drive spacer 5mm longer to line up the spur and drive gears. Haven't checked the left hand side yet.

      @chriscrockerwhite  Před 7 lety

      Well done sorting it Jim, sorry for not responding sooner. I found that my whole setup was very tight meaning I needed to take the paint off, and I also turned a very small amount from the disc that goes on the end of the 2nd shaft. I have now greased up the surface from which the paint was stripped and everything runs smooth. I am back on it now and hopefully will have an update in a couple of weeks! Chris

      Just a quickie Chris. Now that the final drive spacers have been increased did you still use the right wheel spacer between the drive gear and wheel. This is almost the same thickness as the final drive spacer has been extended. If this is the case then the drive pin may need shortening. Just thinking ahead as I haven't got this far yet. I'm guessing that any other discrepancies will have to taken up in the end collars.

      Jimtheshovel standing next to the engine now and it has one between gear and r/h wheel. About 2mm thick.

      @jimoc2045 Před 7 lety

      Thanks for that. Mine is about 5mm thick. Funny that. Guess it'll all come out in the wash.
      Thanks again, I shall now leave you in peace.

    That's looking so nice. I'm surprised how much work you have had to put into this traction engine. But what I do not get is how many modifications have been required to get together all they way through. Now waiting for the day to see it fired up.

      Hi Keith yes lining done by myself, a very slow process! You may have noticed I have only done part of one of the front wheels so far, so a lot left to do, but the tender and front axle are finished. Thanks for watching :-)

    chris i cant afford to build the entire machine so i would like just to build the rear wheel then paint and line it out to a thing of beauty. how much would it cost me ? same scale as yours .. a frustrated old age pensioner .. regards laurence oh ! you did a fine job on yours ! !

    How did you do it the Lining on it thank you for your help

    • @chriscrockerwhite
      @chriscrockerwhite  Před 2 lety

      I used supplies from Craftmaster; the paints and brushes along with lining tape. The lining tape makes it pretty easy to get consistent width lines even if you're not great with a brush (like me!)

  • @andrewwebster3775
    @andrewwebster3775 Před 2 lety

    did you paint the wheels and the hornplate with a brush or did you spray them

    • @chriscrockerwhite
      @chriscrockerwhite  Před 2 lety

      Most things in the blue colour were sprayed but not all. All other colours were brushed. Wheels and the blue parts of horn plates were sprayed 👍
