After testing a lot of the bigger industry names like Traxxas and Losi, the Drive On community requested to see more cars in the budget category. The WLtoys 959 was recommended time and time again and today Alex and Austin take it out for a spin.

Super episode guys! I love these videos where you push the cars to the limit. Also, it's great seeing that Pilatus hanging up in FT HQ. Had some brilliant memories with that plane at FF Ohio '18. ;)
thank you so much guys! i was waiting for something like this from you and this looks like a great deal! thanks guys!
Great value! Thanks for the video! Keep em coming Alex & Austin!
Perfect little car to have some fun around the campground this summer. Thanks for the review. I appreciate your sub-$100 recommendations.
just found this channel after following and enjoying your FliteTest channel for a while from over here in England. I think you guys are smashing it with some great content and really look like you are all having lots of fun! I don't usually comment on videos but when I saw you with the A959 B I couldn't help myself, I have been having fun with this toy for over a year now with my 2 sons after buying an A959-A model and almost immediately setting about upgrading to as many of the aluminium parts as i could possibly get my hands on. we have now got three all in all I have a completely aluminium (and Brushless) model and my boys have a standard one each they are super hardcore cars!
Keep u the great channels you guys rock!
Hello guys,
I have had the WLToys A959 for roughly a year and I have run it very hard. Mine has held up very well. The only down side is it is very hard to keep under control on any surface. I’ve even installed s drift box to try to keep it straight but that didn’t help. But I still love it and it’s onen of my favorite cars. Also parts a readily available. I haven’t had to buy parts for it but I have a few other small scale r/c trucks and cars made by WLToys and they are all basically the same. I had to get a main gear for another truck and I had to be resourceful but I found it and I matched it up with all of my WLToys vehicles as well as a couple other similar ones any they are the same. Again mine has been very durable as well as fun and I highly recommend that everyone wanting a fun fast r/c for less than $100 buy one of these.
Nice vid guys. I was a Heli guy, and one of these lil chinese buggies is what got me into surface RC, it was being sold under a brand called HSP and others. That was 6 or 7yrs ago. I cant belive they have gotten that much better/faster and pretty much the same price point.
This little guy looks awesome! Lol. Just started repairing some of my old vintage RC cars from the late 80’s early 90’s when I was a kid. This little guy looks like so much fun. Might have to get myself one lol. Tying to get my buddy to buy his boys them for Christmas. More vids like this would be awesome.
i have this one and the truck version, i love em and the upgrades i have seen are aluminum chassis, bearing set, and metal gear set. i would also suggest adding some oil to the shocks the weee bit of oil it comes with is useless lol. my daughter and i have an absolute blast with them. Keep up the awesome videos both here and flight test.
Cool. I have one of these. At Flite Fest Florida, I was driving it FPV down the runway. Add oil to the shocks, helps a lot.
I saw a video of the Smaxx being totally submerged in water. Very durable and fast. Great looking truck under $100
Do a review of the three Tamiya Buggy Originals, which are the Grasshopper, Hornet, and Frog. They rock! Like so they can see this if you agree!
Wyatt Swasey heck ya I agree! I love running my grasshopper, I do tamiya buildoffs n buildoff 1 we did the grasshopper n we had like 20 builders n created some of the baddest grasshoppers which I show off in the last video of the build
@@STEVOD313 Sweet ill check it out
I have a Frog in my Garage that was given to me as a kid from my Uncle Wayne! It was my first hobby grade product and is a big part of why I'm in the rc hobby today. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@Drive_On Thanks for the reply! Nice to see you pay attention to your fans and are open to suggestions!
@drive on do a cheap rc car fpv challenge please
My dudes. You need exposure from Flite test :D I looooooove this channel! I know that this would be a big idea, but could you guys do a series making a budget car using preferably a Tamiya TT02? Love the channel!
We need another expedition. Maybe an adventure in the snow. Keep up the awesome vids.
Chunky wheels and a few metal swaps on this and it really is a great starter pack. It's fun for the masses duder
959B is the bigger 540 motor, vs the 959A 380 sized motor. So basically a 1/10 scale 540 motor in a 1/18 scale. Oh and also, the stock shocks are oil dampners, but when u get them theyre usually dry, and need shock oil like 1000 viscosity rated works well
I've been happy with the Dromida DB 4.18 ..I do plan to upgrade the battery to lipo and possibly the motor, but it's been fun so far for $70...;)
You dudes should do a nice proper in car fpv on one of the K969 drift cars. Everyone always mounts their cams on the roofs from what I've seen so far... I've started mounting one in car, and I'm currently modifying an RC dashboard/steering wheel on to the frame, so they'll turn with the wheels on the cam. You lose a little bit of field of view, but you gain the in car immersion!
the wltoys monster truck comes with most of the upgrade parts already, in this size, and the 1/28th
the p929 is the cheapest indoor drifter if you mod it with drift wheels and lock the back diff.
Wltoys k989 is $43 from hobbyking. Great little 1/28 rally car and I have taken it to a skate Park and it's still going strong. Plus all spare parts are available. I think it is worth a comparison to the team associated cars
You can get all metal upgrades for it too!
The 959b has full parts support , and also every part can be replaced and blinged up with all aluminium parts , so you can really go to town on the upgrades . And the 959a had a smaller 380 sized motor and this one 959b has a 540 sized motor , so you could put a tuned racing motor in it to , now there's a thought ......................
The difference between the 959 and the 959b is the motor. The 959 has a 390 in it and the 959b has a 540.
Put a 3s vxl system with radio in mine with foam tires and added oil to shocks and doing 80mph
Family Man thinks I wants to do that.
Family Man holy shit. Really?
It’s a great little car I have 2 of them but keep it out of the dirt especially sand ,it has all plastic gears and they strip easily when they get dirty and small rocks get jammed in the spur/pinion gear.
Put some oil in the shocks, order spare motor and diff assembly then chuck a 3s 1300 in there. These things r a blast! Cheers
I picked up two of these for my dad and I from Walmart online a few years ago for $49.99 each. You can also get parts for these at WL Toys website and some on Amazon.
Great beginner car, but for newbies to rc cars, hitting big ramps at that speed is a really quick way to break this thing. Then you'll be waiting for a simple replacement part for a month on the slow boat from China. Check out the forums to see the best replacement parts to order when you first buy the car. The best upgrades are getting bigger, better tires, which will make off road and jumping safer. If you are gonna go off ramps stock, I'd recommend ramping off asphalt or concrete onto grass like at a park or lawn, it'll make the unfortunate landings much more forgiving. Mostly this thing is great at going real fast on smooth surfaces. It's awesome at a skate park or a concrete drainage ditch, again as long as you don't attempt huge jumps. You'll survive plenty, but will eventually break an important part if you don't land perfectly, which is pretty much inevitable. Great value though, especially for a first RC car. The guys didn't talk about it, but the radio is reeeaally good. I've bought $300 RTRs that had worse radios than this one. It's a lot of fun to rip around fpv too! Highly recommended!
wltoys k989 Amazing little rc car. I have very simply made a couple of mods so it fits kyosho mini z bodies too.
i already have this rc car last year..this car is awesome..
when are you going to post a new video??????????????
Where did you go? Are you just busy with the new place?
Suggestions for sub $100 vehicles that are a tad slower for new guys and still a good value? Thanks.
Can you guys review budget nitro rc cars too? Plz.
So many upgrade and parts for this online. Which is crazy for 89$....mine now probably cost 150 with metal, shocks, and brushless upgrades.
yeah, all the wl toys cars have a massive upgrade support. even for the small 1/28th scale things there is everything avaiiable from aluminium parts to carbon shit.
looks great. brakes are pretty stiff. (let off throttle & it brakes instead of coasting) usually just a adjustment in throttle trim, but i've seen more & more like this recently (sometimes can be a binding issue in the drive train though, gear mesh too tight). definitely a deal breaker if you can't trim that out.
I know you guys love crawlers. I’d like to see you do a review on the hbx devastator!
Great show guys, have you thought about racing at a club? I think if it was on road or off road, you`d both really enjoy it and it`d make for some interesting content.
note: if you buy it elsewhere it is even cheaper. at walmart it is 68 bucks and on banggood it is 85 correctly but banggood has massive sales very often, unlike amazon.
Please do any litehawk product. Boat, drone car. it's all the perfect starter. Love your videos
Where'd you guys goooooo?
Please do a video on setting up decent range fpv for cars.
I hope you will be reviewing the Arrma Typhon V3 6S BLX buggy. And when are you going to get a Traxxas X-Maxx 8S...
a959 and b model both have plastic gears but the b has a bigger motor
Do a review of the redcat racing shreaderator
When you charge that 595B is the red light supposed to be solid red when it's charged or is it supposed to blink I have 2 and one stays red and the other one is blinking
could you guys do a review on the traxxas summit?
"so what are we not gonna do? We're not gonna break it that's what."
*Proceeds to almost run it into the curb, then proceeds to just toss out the rules and rek it*
the wl toy 12428 is AWESOME!!!
I got me 1 and when I first tried it for the first time I was blown away 😮😮very fast
Why did you stop uploading
Hi guys, can you do videos on the traxxas rustler 4×4 vxl or/and the arrma kraton
Awesome video! Are you going to have a rc car course at the new location?
Yes! Please put an off-road and/or on-road course at Edgewater! :D
are any of the upgrades needed?
These toy grade RCs are getting faster every year.
Do a video of you guys modding this little car to the max and see how well it drives
Does it really have a metal gear box. Got the a959 it's a beast for the money
Can you put a snow plow on one of your trucks?
These 1/18 scale rigs r way to hard to keep straight when u hit higher speeds, when it gets fast it gets squirrelly but for the money it’s a fun car for a kid or beginner
I picked one of these up from banggood and the esc quit on the first day. Customer service never responded.
They have replacements parts for the a959B on eBay.
Can you do a review of wltoys 144001? Thanks!
Awesomeness!
metal gears? In your dreams! It's all plastic even in the 959 b. The b version motor is faster than the a version.
I got metal gears for mine but it doesn’t come on the car
Where did you guys go
Hosim dual motor truck!! A959b is awesome
Hey! Have you thought about making a 3D printed tank!?
I think it would be awesome having a tank that runs off a small car battery, and has FPV with flood lights for long range exploring. Or any FPV tank in general. :P
These little things are absolutely amazing.
Put some MTruck tires on that thing.
The B model with the 540... MASSIVE overkill, but..
bang for buck is ALL there. the brushed 360 motor version is ok.
a BRUSHLESS 360 replacement is amazing.
only downside is the ESC and RX is one board.
That's easily fixable. There are TONS of upgrade parts for these.
Full aluminum chassis anyone? Just throw some MT tires on it first.
Why buy upgraded parts when you have a nice little workshop to manufacture and juice as much as you want parts?
Make a water proofing tutorial
Cut out the car shell, mount a whoop canopy on top... with room for mini-split HD fpv!
It's a great little car. Check ebay. I have been running WLTOYS vehicles for years. There is tons of all metal parts for this car. And ball diffs a basically the can can be turned into all metal. And then you can add a brushless system to it and a better servo and radio! Some guys have made this car go over 70 mph using brushless power and 3s lipos for hi speed runs!!!
I got one of these, the thing was so fast, after 6 runs it destroyed one of the wheel rims!
Make it brushless on 4S and send it to the sun!
Wltoys 12428 is great. Extremely durable for the price. They sell full metal upgrade kits for dirt cheap.
Yes!
I have one of the "a" version (no metal gears), they are cheap out there in US or china or whatever other place without abusive taxes (i think?), on my country one of this costs around R$459, not cheap at all, but still cheaper than an traxxas that can exceed R$3500, i'll never drive my 959 crazy like this... and our minimun wage is around R$960 month, this makes RC hobby really expensive even for the most trash rc cars (959 is good, dont get me wrong), sad becauze i really love the hobby. Whatever, live on the wonderful country, with "Samba" and "Feijoada" the magical shiny place where everything is beautifull, until you live here for a month.
Sorry for this. Nice video guys!
What happen!!! Did y'all abandon drive on!!??!!??
can you do a part two with all the upgrades done to it?
Why upgrade this one when you can literally build the whole car from upgrades!
Well I guess I know what my kid id getting for xmas.
do a review of the nikko rc turbo panther, you can get one for about 35$.
can it hydroplane?
There is tons of aluminum upgrade parts on eBay banggood wish all those type of sites
Hey it would be really cool if you did more with mixing body’s of cars for aerodynamic purposes and also try taking cars and making cool body’s like model car convert to electric
New servo and jaco tires go a long way
Why no new videos....
I was driving mine and bam 45 mph into a mail box DESTROYED THE MOTOR WAS ON FIRE
Show in on yt 😂
Must have been fun!
set up a plywood runway on top of the dirt mound with a near vertical jump at the end facing off the mound then jump it off as high as you can. grass is softer than pavement to land in so it ***shouldnt*** break
big fast + small money = big fun + full wallet = AWESOME
Check out the steering stability module that TheDIYGuy999 made to improve tracking with all the power in that tiny package.
Tim Creque ya that dude does some awesome upgrades I really like his channel, he supports my channel as well, he’s a good dude
I did request this too. I don’t know if I got noticed tho
Bangood has a lot of parts for the a959
Randie Hessler I’ve had bad luck with banggood, packages not showing up or comes with box totally trashed, I’ve had lil better luck with gearbest, but those two both have great prices it’s just a gamble cus sometimes the boxes have came with just minor dents, I did a video of the wpl c14 when it first came n a few others from these two companies
I had no problems with banggood.
Has this channel stopped producing videos?
No
Can you look into Axial rc cars. They have some really cool trucks. You should check out their 1/10 SMT10 Grave Digger monster truck. Just maybe do a review on a monster truck, maybe the ones by Traxxas. Good review...
Thats a great idea, I own the Axial 1/10 SMT10 and love it. They should review it, they would love it!
I own the SMT10 and its great, not too fast but plenty of power, the driving Alex and Austin do fit perfectly with that car, hopefully they see this, I would love to see them review it.
thanks, I think they would too!
Yep agree.
Try the wltoys across 4wd buggy
Kevin Talbot did a vid on this and two slower ones trying to destroy them like a week ago
I think the next when you are to try is the mini T 2.0
try the WL TOYS a-797 b......and found them cheaper at RCMOMENT for $50-$60
Do the review of the 959
Try the wltoys 12428 model n ones like that for under $100 feiyue f03-f06 is another, they r all copies of the twin hammers n people seem to like these models jjrc also has there version but all r same chassis
I wanna see the JLB Cheetah or DHK Zombie!
