5 Steps to Lower HbA1c Fast!

  • Often we get questions from members and viewers about how to lower their hemoglobin A1c. Their doctor may have told them to eat less carbs or lose weight, but the advice is general and not very helpful.
This video gives you 5 specific things you can do, and explains why to do them, to lower your A1c. Plus you’ll hear from actual people who were able to lower theirs and prevent the need for diabetes medications.
An optimal A1c is 5.5% or less. The prediabetic range for A1c is 5.7% to 6.4%. The diabetic range is 6.5% or above.
Often your doctor won’t really address your blood glucose levels until they are in the diabetic range. But so much can be done to lower them before you need medications.
And so much can be done once you’re on medications to reduce your amount of get rid of them altogether.
As a disclaimer, the advice I’m going to give needs to put through your own common sense test.
If I say something and you think, “Whoa I could never do that,” then ask yourself what you could do to get just a little bit better in this area.
Ultimately, you’ve got to find a lifestyle that is sustainable that keeps insulin and inflammation low to lower and maintain a healthy A1c.

Faster is limiting to 20 - 25 gross carbs per meal, drink plenty of water and have no more than one tablespoon of any kind of sweeteners in one day. So no diet sodas or artificially sweetened candy. Also, supplements with berberine or bitter lemon or fenugreek help. In 2018, my a1c went from 12 to 5.5 in less than six months.

I laugh when she says, "take berberine under the guidance of a health care professional." Yeah, right. Listening to my doctor is what got me stuck in the 4 injections of insulin per day. They dont want you to get better... they would have nobody to prescribe medication to and wouldn't be able to schedule all the office visits and blood work that goes along with sickly patients. Doctors take more pride in their bank account balance than the number of clients that they actually help.

I’m 66 and I’m a cyclist and doing over 100 miles a week since I retired last year. . Also do some floor exercises and stretching has really become important. My weight is pretty stable but I did have to give up intermittent fasting and introduce some more carbs because I was bonking on bike rides over 40 miles. I guess I will have to look into Berberine.

I'm on my feet for the majority of my day. Walking around the shop or yard looking for vehicles and climbing on them or underneath them. Plus the one hour at work for PT and I do lift weights once a week for about an hour. My job is quite physical at times depends on what I'm working on that day.
I also had a back injury last year and was unable to work out or maintain my physical activity. I was told I was diabetic this year and at no time was diet discussed and was immediately put on 1000mg of metformin that instantly gave me headaches and made me light headed. Then Jardiance that has done the same. I cannot work this way with a headache all day long.
I did change my diet after I was told this and dropped my A1c from 7.1 to 6.7 with no meds. I have yet to go back to my doctor to see where I'm at. Been busy with just life. Getting back to my normal routine I have never felt better. I also have never felt like shit with the medication I was given.

I'm 61 and have been battling high cholesterol for decades and now I'm pre-diabetic with my last A1c of 6.3 , fasting glucose of 123, HDL 52/LDL 145, resting heart rate of 50s-70s and BP always 117/72 or better. Whereas before I was laid off, had an operation to replace my ACL, got divorced, lost my best friend to cancer and stopped taking my medication regularly all my numbers were excellent with just 5mg Rosuvastatin a day. I'm 5'9.5", weigh 191, fairly muscular and have maintained a consistent 31 inch waist throughout my life. I don't "work out" but am very strong from physical labor and make a point to walk at night with my dog 3 or 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes if possible. I fast 6PM-6PM with 2 cups black coffee/splenda, Metamucil and apple cider vinegar in the mornings with average 115 glucose and maybe some nuts throughout the day until 6PM when I usually eat beef, avocados onions and tomatoes and salmon or fish other times. I rarely eat grains, bread, sugar, never drink alcohol or soda, I drink lots of water maybe 8 oz per hour. I ate some sugar after I got my continuous glucose monitor and it bounced glucose up to 150 for a few minutes and then declined to the low 80's over the next few hours. My glucose stays around 115 while sleeping but spikes to 123 or more when I get up to use the restroom and sometimes stays there until about noon when it drops to 107-110. I'm still taking the 5mg statin. I'm not diabetic but after seeing some of you report numbers in the 5s on your A1C I'm looking for suggestions on how I can get there. I'm being pushed to get on metformin before I hit 6.5 and I'm considering it to avoid the medical insurance changes after that milestone diagnosis my Dr says he'll have to report if I ever hit that number.
I don't lack discipline and can/will do whatever it takes to beat this trend.

But my insulin curve....was taking so many hours to come down, that's the best test you can do, dont just trust your A1C. Dont trust your regular doctor, go with a endocrinologist and make sure you get all the special test to see if your insulin is ok.

So can he eat normally all food types like ice cream , white flour , rice in moderation or not? Is he a non diabetic or if once you are tested prediabetic there’s no way going back?

I learned I was pre-diabetic with an A1c of 5.8 at the end of 2023. (I didn’t even know such a thing existed). Using Carb Manager app, I went on a keto diet which restricted my carbs to 15 g and currently to 13 g. daily; lost 20 pounds. This week April 2, had my A1c test (non fasting) redone after three months on Keto with no cheats. The last week in March, had my fasting blood glucose tested. It came in at 99 from 105 - healthy but “just”. I was expecting a reading in the 80s. But the real devastating result was my A1c INCREASED to 5.9! I was so confident that it would be around 5.5! Cannot see my nutritionist nor primary care physician until the end of April. Felt totally lost, on a runaway train to Type 2 but have regrouped and developed a new plan which will hopefully get me out of prediabetes state. Why would my fasting glucose decrease but my A1c increase? Could there be an error in the test? Do I need to wait three more months to retest my A1c? In the meantime, I went back through all my blood work from previous years and saw I had an A1c of 5.7 in 2020!! Like you said, no one told me about the test results and what it meant. Thank you for all your information.

Thank you for the information. What is the best time to check your morning glucose? I get up around 6:15 am, should I measure it at that time? I never eat breakfast, so should it be measured maybe two hours after I wake or just before I am ready for lunch at 11:00? I only eat two meals per day, but it's still confusing. The reason for this question is because we all have rising glucose levels just before we wake up, I think this is called the "Dawn Effect". My thought is that if you measure your glucose level within a few minutes after you wake, it will not be accurate. You can't be certain that your body is outside of the Dawn Effect window. Any thoughts?
