      @Dalton Beauregard pre covid you could always wait til you had a job with a budget to justify the spend, then go and buy it and have it in a week. Now, it's like pre-order for 2 months, then hope it arrives on month 3.

      Hey buddy, keep saving. Don't go into debt with gear unless you've immediate and ongoing work to pay it off within a year at most. And, if you're clients aren't going to pay for the level of production value the gear can help you provide, then don't buy it.

    Seriously considered the C70, but ended up going with the Sony FX3.

    • @FacesOfLA
      @FacesOfLA Před 2 lety

      Same lol no one talks about the FX3 as a documentary camera for the extreme run n gun. A lot of the negative feedback on the FX3 is very minimal.

    • @myvideoguy
      @myvideoguy Před 2 lety

      @@FacesOfLA I had an FX6 on order but cancelled it last minute as if working on a gimbal without the top handle at the time you'd have to go with a dual system sound solution as the in built mic is barely usable for scratch audio. So then ordered the C70 thinking I'm finally going to order a Canon for among many others, the advantage of it's so highly coveted dual pixel autofocus (again for any solo gimbal work). Unfortunately the autofocus isn't as awesome as I thought it'd be, but yeah still pretty great. THEN, then FX3 was announced and I was kicking myself as this (excl build in ND's) was in my mind and even better solution than the C70 once you factored in it's autofocus abilities, colour profiles, hotshoe XLR module, and ESP it's IBIS. I also love Sony's newer colour science - SO MUCH MORE LIFE inherently to the image than it's previous anaemic prosumer video looks from 10 years ago.
      I'm happy with my C70, all but the right handle ergo. If it have more of an FX6 relocatable right handgrip and was therefore a bit more box-like I think it's be brilliant. SDI outs, full size XLR (so no additional adapter leads) would be nice too haha. But for the price it's great an will be a workhorse little machine for a good number of years.

    I see this camera more as a C100 MKII replacement, but they still make that camera in 2021 for reasons I can't guess.

    I’m finally ordering a c70 this week! Was tempted by Komodo (for raw, image quality and global shutter/cadence) but have to face the fact that most of the my shoots are solo, fast and not time to setup…. What’s the best monitor you think? (7inch…. My aging eyes need bigger than 5 lol). Or should I get an evf? Thanks.

    • @myvideoguy
      @myvideoguy Před 2 lety

      Sucks when your eyes start failing, especially when you're shooting in hot climates, trying to manage wearing glasses and fogging while shooting in an ultra mobile / fast paced style, and having so many monitors with smaller footprints that are almost completely unusable with their inherent reflective screens and low nits.
      If I were you I'd go for a high bright 7 inch Small HD monitor. They are an amazing, robust monitor, well supported and made to very high standards. Just know that if you go this monitor you will most likely need to power it with a small V-mount rigged to your camera on rails.

    Love you channel and content. Videos are great and always appreciate your expertise. Just wanted to note that I purchased a C70 two weeks ago and I am disappointed with performance. Focus tracking is a nightmare and the handgrip strap keeps making me hit the function and other feature adjustment buttons. I'm a long time Canon user and just feel like they dropped the ball with the LCD and design of this camera. I guess I'm spoiled to the C300 MKIII.

    • @deroux
      @deroux Před 2 lety

      @@thisisbug Depends on the project and what I'm matching the footage with. I like the DZO film vespid 25 and 35 (16 on pre-order), Canon 35 1.4 and Sigma 18-35 1.8. The 18-35 is the workhorse and is used for a lot of my commercial client work as the lens gives a very sharp and neutral look. The 18-35 gets used the most. Cheers!

  • @hvxcolors
    @hvxcolors Před 2 lety +1

    There is IMO too much rigging involved in the use of this camera for many documentaries. I have already a c300 mk2 that takes me way too long to setup. I would like to see instead a kind of XF905 with this sensor, appropriate fixed lens, no rigging needed. Just frame and shoot on ssd or sd cards. In many documentaries time is an important factor as there is sometimes little prep time to change lenses, microphones, monitors. The DVX200 had a decent sensor taken from their GH line but is getting old now. I'm sure Canon can come up with something...

    • @myvideoguy
      @myvideoguy Před 2 lety

      100% with you on that. A big sensor fixed zoom lens camera at the top of the XF line would be brilliant. When you've shot for years pre 5D era there's nothing that matches that old style ergonomics for ease and speed of use. Having a good quality EVF, servo zoom, and built in XLRs and NDs can not be understated in how much rigging they can all save you.

    I’m struggling a bit with false colour in log 2 - if I use the internal lut to see how things are looking will the false colour read the exposure of underlying clog 2 picture or the lut?

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes! The false color works the same no matter what kind of LUT is applied. I put skin one stop over the peach, so 2 stops over middle grey.

    Why do you like the c70 over the Sony fx6 or fx9?

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  Před 2 lety +1

      The Fx6 will give you an almost identical image. I prefer Canon because that's what I'm familiar with and have the most experience with.

    • @baekmedier
      @baekmedier Před 2 lety

      Sound on the fx6 is an issue. But if you always shoot with the handle Then its the same specs as the c70, almost.
      But no 10-bit if not in the highest mode, where the c70 has 10-bit evne in long GOP codec.
      But in everything else than xf-avc on the c70 you dont Got Sound in 32-bit…
      it formes down to what glas you have investere in…

    • @RyanAnthonyDigitalMedia
      @RyanAnthonyDigitalMedia Před 2 lety

      @@baekmedier Yes, I’m familiar with the different specs between the cameras. I was asking his opinion cuz he said it’s the best documentary camera & I was wondering why he felt that way over the competition when the fx6 & fx9, to me, are superior simply because of the full-frame cuz they all have extremely similar specs otherwise.

    • @myvideoguy
      @myvideoguy Před 2 lety

      @@RyanAnthonyDigitalMedia sometimes too I think that knowing the camera that a lot of fellow shooters use in you market / region tend to use can not be overlooked when making your own purchase - as it can get you across the line with multicam gigs over another shooter (ie look consistency out of the box). IE in Australia for the last 10-15 years almost, the Sony F5 has been the go-to camera for ie the reality / actuality format, higher end commercials (if not Alexas) and have been prolific among many pro camo's. That's by no means the exhaustive list of course but there's definitely been a trend / tendency. The FS7 has also played a big part as has the C300mkii too, esp in broadcast doc content too. Locally I've found a lot of camo's in the corporate / industrials realm and up going for FX6's for all-round workhorses at that mid tier to lower budget gigs or simply for a smaller form factor B-cam (that's not 8-bit) to their FX9's with similar native colour science / looks. Also a good number of shooters investing in the C300mkiii and C500mkii for higher end commercial / corporate / doc work.
      The lower-end or prosumer end can definitely cut together well with likes of FX9's, C500mkii's and C300mkiii's now, so we're kinda spoilt for choice really. And thankfully don't need to invest massively to be able to achieve beautiful imagery with the tech at hand.
