    I’m still waiting for my adapter however it seems canon is showing you the equivalent f stop, rather than the actual opening of the lens. So while it was reading 2.8 for both tests, the lens was actually stopped down further on the C70 in order to give the amount of light and DOF you would be expecting without the speed booster.
    Theoretically the DOF and focal length should be much much closer if you simply had the same lens at their most wide open, and then count stops down from there.

      Thanks Jesse! My brain was breaking trying to figure out how the speedbooster could *increase* DOF with an equivalent f stop, focal length and distance from subject, but this explanation makes so much sense. I don't think showing equivalent f-stop is good practice...seems pretty confusing.

      Exactly. For a real 1-to-1 here, you have to have the C70 at 1 stop lower at all times. That's what the speedbooster does to begin with.

  • @avdcam
    @avdcam Před 3 lety +7

    This is great Griffin! So I think what is happening with the speedbooster is effecting how the aperture values appear. One thing to note is the an F 0.9 setting on the C70 with the speedbooster is equivalent to the F 1.2 on the C500 Mark II. The numbers change because Canon (and Sony for that matter) felt that speedboosters should provide the equivalent aperture settings or put another way, show you that the speed boosters are converting the lens in use to a +1 stop version. So with the speedbooster combined with the 50mm F1.2 used on the C70 you get approximately a 50mm F0.85 Aperture lens (rounded to 0.9) on a crop sensor. I wish they would just adjust the aperture to read out the lenses in their full frame equivalent so you can match to other full frame cameras, but instead the apply the math accurately and read out the new calculated aperture factoring in the size of the sensor in use. So when you set the aperture to 0.9 on the 50mm on the C70 with the speedbooster you are setting the f1.2 50mm lens to the same wide open setting as you are when the 50mm is on the C500.

    Great video. Thank you for sharing. I think the issue with the depth of field appears to be because the lens was wide open on the c500 and stopped down on the c70 to compensate for the added light from compressing the image on the speed booster so even though the image was close to the same exposure, the smaller aperture of the c70 was giving you a wider depth of field. Since the sensors are not the same size there is no perfect “apples to apples” comparison but if you want to compare bokeh you would want to make sure both lenses are wide open and adjust exposure through ISO or ND.

  • @NoTicket
    @NoTicket Před 3 lety +2

    Hey Griffin, great video. Depth of field is kind of fascinating isn’t it? The reason your lens matches at f/2 on the C70 and f/2.8 on the C500 II is because that is when your lens is stopped down to the same physical aperture size.
    The speed booster is simply compressing the image circle projected by the lens on to the sensor. At f/2.8 on the C500, the lens is stopped down to f/2.8 internally. If you took this same lens configuration and put it on the speed booster it would become f/2 due to the reduction in focal length. But the image is still the same. This means if you have a 50mm f/2.8 it becomes a 35mm f/2 (both of these keep the same 17.7mm physical aperture) but you end up with the same framing between the two cameras because of the smaller sensor on the C70.
    When you stop down to the same aperture of f/2.8 on both cameras you end up with a 50mm f/2.8 setting with a 17.7mm aperture on the C500, and a 35mm f/2.8 setting with a 12.5mm aperture on the C70 with speed booster. Smaller physical apertures = higher depth of field.
    So what you observed is absolutely correct! You have to open the aperture one additional stop to match depth of field (and light collection) with the speed booster. If you stop them down to the same aperture you’re eliminating the advantage of the speed booster. You should always use 1 stop wider aperture and 1 stop lower ISO setting when possible to achieve full frame equivalent noise and depth of field.

      @@JervyHou I’m torn between moving over to Sony or getting the C70 (coming from BlackMagic so current lens kit isn’t a deciding factor)
      The reason I’m debating is because I’ve never been in love with Sony’s color science. Thoughts?
      I actually canceled my FX3 order because I’m still undecided.

    Speed booster is a focal reducer. Wider focal length means deeper DOF. And of course the c500 has a shallower DOF it’s a full frame sensor and the c70 is super35. Just because you use a focal reducer doesn’t change your sensor size.

    Hey Griffin, any chance you have info recording RAW on a C200 using a SSD drive? The Cfast cards are crazy expensive and I understand this could be a viable workaround. Great video by the way. THX!

    Of course you have to open the speed boosted lens another stop to match the full-frame DOF. I would like to see a test of the 4k through the speed booster. Thanks

    Was super excited to get my 0.71x canon booster. Arrived today and will be going back to RF lenses. I used the 24-105 Ef ii and the autofocus motor was being picked up by the rode mic I had on top.
    Any point in keeping the speed booster for manual lenses? Just the extra light and wider field of view with manual lenses I guess?

      @@GriffinConway I sold the C200. I upgraded to the C70. The C70 form factor is much easier to travel with and with the exposure tool like false color it makes nailing exposure a breeze. No more need to RAW. I can travel with C70 and DJI Ronin SC 2 and a few lens all in a backpack. Love it man. Keep the videos coming.

    The speedbooster adds 1 stop of light and the camera compensates te number of the f stop for it so when it says 2.0 the it is actually 2.8 only one stop brighter. So that is why the depth of field matches when you open up 1 more f stop. But to really compare you have to set the fstop 1 step brighter since it’s actually the same. The extra stop of light is one off the benefits of a speedbooster.

    Could you see how much in real life the autofocus area effects shooting? To my knowledge it shrinks down from 80% to 60% coverage.

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  Před 3 lety

      In the autofocus section you can see a little square on the screen. That shows you the area that can achieve focus. I think in the real world it wont affect shooting much
