Driving my Honda S2000 on a nice mountain road to experience the 9,000 RPM F20C in its full glory, VTEC and all. The engine is a 2.0L naturally aspirated I4 producing 240 HP and 153 lb-ft of torque. Driving the S2000 is a mechanically satisfying experience that's unique to this vehicle. Everything is very short in precise: the throttle, brakes, steering, and shifting. The 6-speed close ratio manual makes downshifting very simple, and upshifts are smooth and fast.
The lightweight, RWD-roadster is an incredibly fun formula, and the Honda S2000 nails it in it's own unique way.

NEW VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Your smile at 11:13 is why S2000 owners are S2000 owners.
What does that even mean? haha
Ray DM vtech kicks in
ItZ RuBb3R *vtec
Ray DM lmao I didn'tn't notice I did that
+Ray DM i think hes hittin on him
Video is almost at 6,000 likes... VTec is coming soon
Hahaha yess!
Engineering Explained how many miles does your s2k have. I'm getting one next year. don't think I want one with more than 50 to 60k miles
Kameron James they are pretty bullet proof, so high mileage doesn't mean much...
Gotta make sure the motor wasn't over revved by downshifting into the wrong gear
Bruno Danese true but I think I still want low mileage. then engine might be able to take it but the interior might look like crap. I want a weekend car that is in perfect shape.
Just did my part. Bring it on!
We appreciate how safe of a driver you are and considering cyclists. Thank you for being responsible.
exactly he is a sensible guy. he is having fun driving it but not a showoff.
I really like your reviews. You are talking about the things which magazines and other car reporters simply don't talk, but are interesting (at least to me). Also, your reviews sound and look a lot more honest, than reviews from usual car journalist. Great job, please continue to review cars, of course, alongside with engineering stuff :)
Igor Horvat thanks for the kind words! Glad you enjoy the reviews!
"winter is coming here" ... Drives open top wearing a t-shirt.
well, the geographical whith of the area that he's living is the same with the Crete's
I didnt mean it seriously. Just a funny remark
Lol actually i didn't notice he wear t shirt because he wears it all the time
Had a good chuckle out of that one too seeing that I now drive with the heater and heating seats on and he's there top off in t-shirt.
As long as you are not going about 100 kph (whatever this is in mph), the heating system of the S is capable to keep you warm in a 0°C environment. Thats the remarkable thing about the S: Everything is so perfectly engineered...
I absolutely LOVE my 2005 AP2 S2000. I agree with everything you said, in fact, I think you described the S200 experience better than any other video that I've seen.
I bet a modern Honda S2000 would be a beast. Now that Honda is getting their turbo game going.
Butt Beware Sadly Honda is now only about Civic and NSX. no more light weight cars :(
There are lots of rumours of a 1.5 turbo s2000 and 2.0 turbo type R, fingers crossed! Also there's the new s660, the definition of a light weight car! A mad little thing! And the s1000 export version has been confirmed.
Butt Beware it'd make sense, try to get a piece of the cake being taken by the MX-5 and the BRZ/GT86 cousins.
Actually the *new* emissions laws will be bringing back displacement.
Small displacement turbo engines are actually pretty dirty on boost but very clean when out of it. The new emissions tests will be taking this into account by spending more time closer to the vehicle's powerband.
#naturallyaspiratedmasterrace
I remember being in college and this car was new. I used to sit on the computer and just dream of driving this car.
When you said "winter is coming" all I could think about was Game of Thrones. LOL
"Shifting the gear is almost like flipping a light switch.... very very mechanically satisfied." I could not agree with you anymore than that.
Great video Jason, it's awesome to see you having a blast in it!
hey Matt
subaruwrxfan hey subaruwrxfan here
The s2000 may not be that fast, but it's not easy to find something that matches the driving enjoyment it gives you!
my DURAMAX does me
As a car enthusiast I agree that some of the newer cars feel more sporty and are much better than the older cars yet there is something to be said about the mechanical feel older cars have, and the human input needed to drive them fast and in control.
I'm not saying this is a $150 000 supercar, I'm just saying that its better than it
I'm very happy to see someone else who understands the simple joy in rowing a very mechanical-feeling manual shifter. And the way you described the throttle is like every CRX I've ever owned. Glad to see you're enjoying the car.
Ha, I can tell you're having fun with your S2000! I always like your videos (very informative and entertaining) and it's nice to see you having a good time with your S2000.
I drove one just one time, and it's an absolute blast. Classic simple roadster, finely honed mechanics, great driving position, fantastic chassis and revving the nuts off the engine is super satisfying.
I drive an '07 Civic Si, and while they're two totally different cars I can see a lot of the things that made the S2000 great in the Si at maybe 7 or 8 tenths. A high revving naturally aspirated four cylinder, a super slick transmission and really nice steering. That's why we loved Hondas
amen brother
Jackisaboss1208 I'd agree. I drove an 07 Si and loved it. I came from a 95 prelude (h22a) love the engines in all three of these cars (Civic, Prelude, and S2000).
Agreed, except you forgot to also say Vtec!
Absolutely correct. I had a 2000 Si just before my 2002 S2000. I miss them both. I suppose one makes you smile more than the other. But everybody's smiling!
Yess you make Sunday mornings great!!
Dude its already 4:30PM ;)
yes it's boring don't get it. Let me get them all so i can uhh stop others from getting this bad type of car... XD
Espro youd ont live in the same place... not the same timezone.
glenn maquiran i know, just some little trolling from old Germany :)
Excellent review of the S2000 driving dynamics. I totally agree with what Igor Horvat said; you talk about things that no one else talks about, and those things being stuff that actually matters! That's what makes your reviews so unique and interesting to watch. Keep 'em coming man.
I really enjoy the subtle humor, keep it up!
You didn't stopped smiling the entire video :D
Why would you smile if its a boring car?
skillzz because it has no torque
What everyone else says about it doesn't really bother me because I'm jolly happy with mine and that's what matters to me. It is true that it hasn't got that much torque in the lower rev range but that sweet transmission compensates for it. And too much torque would just end up spinning the car ...
I didn't stop smiling for a month after purchasing both of mine. I've had 2003 & 2002 model years, both in yellow. So, yeah - it's pretty fun. And I live in Florida. Hills and curves don't exist in these parts of the woods.

Great video and a great car, Jason! Other CZcamsr's should take note of some of the framing and camera views you included in the driving video. Thank you for sharing!
Jacob Frey thanks!
VW Max thank you so much.
Incredible amount of information and wonderfully presented. Thank you Jason for your awesome content on your channel.
I love your videos so much! Keep up the good work my man!
$50? pff I just bought new Hancook winter tires for $40 CDN ($30.44 USD). All 4 installed and balanced for $323 including sales tax and enviro fees :)
theslimeylimey sounds like a pricey install!
theslimeylimey is it harder to install winter tires? I've never had to put them on myself.
Welcome to Canada, when I got my new tires installed on my mustang in Calgary it was 160$ for install+balancing, quite similar to what theslimeylimey seemed to have paid. Great review btw
+sample text No. It should literally be the same as putting summer tires on.
Jeez car tires are cheap. I'm lucky if I can get a set of tires for $900 on my land cruiser, and that's cheap for a truck.
I was waiting for a white AE86 to blow past
Naa surely not. Takumi couldn't even pass the s2k in the anime, only until the old man got sick, surely our man here ain't that old. :P
really enjoying the editing job!
So awesome... The enjoyment I get from this video it's like I was sitting right there in the passenger sit. So perfetcly described, you included all kind of information I needed to know. Those uncontrolled smiles S2000 generates tell you everything :)
why isn't there a successor to this yet
Honda's brand image is so lame now
I'm not saying by any means that this is a new $400000 Honda NSX, I'm just saying that it's better than it.
They are thinking of making a new one.
+PvanP A new S2k would be goddamn amazing, but as of current dont joke about it being better than the new NSX lol.
Xaines OK joke police take me in
the most reserved "woooooo" ive ever heard
Loving the videos Jason!
I gotta say man, I'm so jealous/happy you got yourself the S2K. I've been watching your videos for a long time now and your content has always been awesome. I've learned so much from just watching your videos. You're awesome dude. I just got a new job that'll be paying me a lot more, and I want my first big purchase to be a S2K just like you! Keep up the good work, my friend.
Hope you're able to get your own s2k. I just got mine in January 2023 and here we are now in July 2023. It is now the new garage clean but I drive it every weekend and sometimes take it out during the week. It's not a daily driver that's what my Honda Ridgeline is for. My ap2 2006 is in mint condition, bone stock and I don't intend on making any changes to it.. have fun when you get yours
I can think of a good way to get rid of those rear tires.... Hrmm
You're definetely having a blast with this car, we can see it in your face :) Good to hear you worring about cyclists, we (cyclists) thank you for that !
loving the channel, keep it up
Haha the smile on your face while driving this...I've wanted an S2000 for roughly 8 years now, I'm hoping that I can make it happen soon.
I need to drive an S2000.
You say that you don't like old cars, but everything you say you like about this car, I have only experienced in old cars.
And despite new cars having more advanced technology you still those this over a 2015 Mx5.
I didn't choose this over an MX-5 haha, I chose to pay 1/3 the price of an MX-5.
Engineering Explained Fair enough, I kind of assumed you were making enough to buy a new Mx5, but that's a bit unfair of me
And in Aus used 2015 mx5s and s2ks are comparable in price
An S2000 and a MX-5 are not that comparable.
The S2000 was a more of a speciality product, aim to the most skilled drivers. The MX-5 is a amazing roadster with an amazing chassis and a ton of fun in it but it's a car for the masses. Pretty much anyone can drive a MX-5 fast and have fun in it. And pretty much anyone can have fun driving a S2000 but it's much harder to drive it fast.
They are similiar... They are both roadsters, both lightweight and both aim to provide a fun driving experience but the similiarities stop there. The MX-5 is a car for everyone. The S2000 is a car for a special type of costumer.
Congrats on the car!
Burnout to get rid of the old 50 dollar tires? how to do a burnout in an s2000 instructional?
The burnout would last 2 seconds before the tires caught fire and car goes up in smoke :)
how to properly put out a car fire tutorial.
Brian Hulse shots fired.
two burnouts. one with the current rears and one with the current fronts moved to the rear.
TKTmon now were thinking, good call.
cool to see you have fun with it!
Great video! The s2000 is without a doubt one of the great modern classic roadsters and that engine is one of Honda's triumphs. You got yourself a brilliant car.
drift it to kill the tires
your review of this car made me want to buy an s2000
Do it!
epicface206 This is my dream car 🤤
Recently got a 02 s2k and love it! Glad you enjoy yours aswell!!!!
It's great to see you having a blast in the car. Once you get proper tires it will also feel so much more confidence inspiring. I could see the effect those cheap ones are having from the POV shots, it looked like it was on grease!
Gotta say, you made the right choice! Better interior than a Rolls Royce and better than an NSX! Much wow! And because of the specific output, it's also better than every other supercar except the Ferrari, right?
He was making jokes silly.
He was making jokes, although I prefer the s2k interior a lot more than any Rolls.
Also better than the MX5!
King Naw m8, I drive a '79 Beetle. I guess this wasn't clear, but I was making a joke, not being sarcastic. I found what he said funny, so I continued the joke. Sorry if it offended you, or anyone else.
This guy gets it.
Do a review of a 1st gen Rx8 and compare these two cars, they're very similar
maybe because they both burn oil, but that's really it.
ahahahha pretty much lol
I have a 2nd gen RX-7 FC. I think that comparing the S2k and the FC is better as they share similar characteristics. Both are Convertible and have low-torque engines. they are similar size aswell. Although the FC is from the 80's it can still hold its own. There's no other feeling like when boost kicks in and you hit the redline at 9k rpm while your rear wheels kick out :D
both have early days electric power steering.
mclarenV12 "The new electric steering systems are completely numb and deader than the dead prostitute in EngineeringExplained's trunk. "
LMAO
Love the s2k vids!
You really make me miss mine (had a Spa Yellow 2001). Your review summed up precisely what makes the S2000 a truly special car.
Hopefully Honda finds their way again as the early 2000's are when they stopped building great cars.
1:19 trying to do a nice pan shot and there's a bug brake dancing on your hood! LOL
Josh Foster haha yep, always happens! My first s2k video has a fly going around for all of the intro.
Engineering Explained
I noticed that too haha! Cant wait to see more of this awesome car though, keep it up! :)
you think your Honda lacks torque, you don't even know...
pbfloyd13 nice pic
My 275k miles 7afe corolla is the one that lacks torque
what is torque? Toyota Corolla 2E
Wow! Mr. Money Bags here with a 7A-FE! I got the 4A-FE.
LOL
Really enjoyed the first person view of that beautiful road.
Probably the best video you've ever made.
"Not trying to say it's better... But its better"
Keep up the great content!
Found out this car is twitchy the hard way when I totalled my friend's
You should upgrade to AP2 wheels and slap some Bridgestone RE71Rs on them :D btw I would store the car during the winter.
Yup
advan a048
You are a great reviewer/explainer of things.
That's what I like about NA Engine, when you hit the sweet torque spot! with a nice exhaust and a good tune... Ouff... shivers! Especially the first time!
I would compare the shifting action to feel of a bolt action rifle. Very positive and mechanically satisfying feel.
Flat bottom steering wheel install?
Won't do much...
Fixed back racing bucket seats on hard mounts, will drop you completely on the floor
Aftermarket steering wheel, with spacers - will get the wheel closer and higher, just what you want (if you are a tall guy)
Greatly affects resale and safety. He probably won't be doing it since he cares a lot about those things.
honestly your dry sense of humor makes me crack up all the time! ur jokes r so understated that sometimed it takes a second to even realize it was a joke and then once i realize i just start laughing like crazy haha
another great video. its funny we had a integra at the same time now im in the market for a s2000 love the vids thinking ill go ap2 please make more s2000 vids!
I went and test drove this car in 2003 and I remember it being tight inside. I remember I asked the sale's person if the seat went back anymore. And he said something I'll never forget....."you're there".
Avarage height of a Japanese man is 170.7cm or 5 feet 7 inches
Damn, that's tiny
krazytoneride Yea, but being 172 cm tall I shouldn`t say anything about that being tiny or not xD But I am rocking an agressive density :)
The Esseboy yeah, at the time I was 6 foot 1 inch tall and about 227lbs. Knees were damn near on the dash.
marksuave25 Yea, but isn`t Jason like 6 foot plus too? Wonder if he has any problem? I don`t remember him complaining.
My car has $35 tires. Tigar Wintera. And these do the job just fine.
Mladen Milić Push a little too hard on the wet and you will understand how bad your tyres are. I have shitty tyres on my car...and it's not fun at all ^^
Cheap tyres are fine for daily commute in slow traffic. But if you want to have some fun in the twisties, get a decent set of softer, grippier compound.
Even the worst winter tire is better than any summer tire in snow or ice. It climp up hill. It stops.
I like to drive fast, on track. On public roads, I take it easy.
PS It is good for drifting during summer, because it melts. I put old and used ones on Ford Sierra, which has 90hp. Most fun I ever had at 40 km/h.
After watching this, I think it's time to go take a drive in my '00!
I can't wait to see some auto cross or track day videos!
Congrats again on the new car, looking forward to more of it.
"new cars are better than old cars" well youre dead to me
James Bukkaki same man, same.
Well I would say as far as the engineering goes they are, he is an engineer after all so that's what he appreciates. Some appreciate the style and soul only a classic car can have, I like a bit of both.
He has an engineering major, what would you expect him to say?
On paper ... maybe.
It was fun while it lasted Bukkaki, adios!
Garage the S2000 for the winter (except for clear days). Use the CrossTrek for winter months. I would just get yourself a good set of summer tires for the S2000. I don't see the point in getting winter tires for the Honda if you have an AWD Subaru. Michelin Pilot Super Sports for the S2000 and be done. Use the money you would spend on winter tires for maintenance, mods, etc.
My 2002 S2000 has never seen snow, I too have a Subaru for crappy weather. I put Bridgestone S02's on the S and though they may not have the longevity of the Michelins, they are unbelievable in handling. Honda designed the car and sent it out with SO 2s so who am I to second guess their vision?
Ralph1953 Exactly. I meant Michelins more rhetorically, but you make my point. S2k for when the weather permits, otherwise Subaru.
They don't make PSS for 16" wheels
ssaxmanful That makes a good case for upgrading wheels!
so nice to see someone who appreciates the true s2000 values and knows what he's talking about..love your EE vids and love your S2K vids even more ;o]]
What a cool car! Thank you for a fun ride!!!!!!!!!
I have I have $50 tires on my civic. Lol. Some people pay $200 just for one tire.
Vonday I have $70 tires on my get around/ winter cars... but $150 tires on my sports/ performance car.. Although the General Altimax RT43's ($70 tires) are great for cruising from place to place at a normal rate. I wouldn't try to push their limits.
And its worth it if you get great grippy tires, my friend has a EM1 Civic Si with very expensive tires and the thing grabs the earth as if it wanted to prove a point. lol
In upgraded 4x4s with extra-large tires, you may be looking at $3-400 per tire. A reasonable priced high quality tire for a small 4x4 SUV costed me $120 each. You can keep your $50 tires... I think for safety reasons my several-thousand-pound box ought to have a bit more money spent on each of its tires than I spend on my shoes. Otherwise forget ice and snow, even just rain and gravel are dangerous with bad tires.
Sure... Truck tires are gonna cost more. ???
I pay $20 per used tire at pick n pull for my Volvo
i wish this was cheaper
Unknown You get what you pay for 😉
Get a miata
Miata NA. Its gives amazing vintage sporty raw feel. Tons and tons of fun
In Australia 2002 model S2000 is $22000, thats pretty expensive
Jay Arriola is this the Honda?
I've been waiting for this :)
i always wanted an s2000, great vid 👌🖒🖒
You can get yourself killed easily with crappy tires like these.
I once drove like 2 miles with 50$ tires, but then suddenly I died. That was crazy.
Nonsense. Cheapo tires can cause massive understeer.
I used $50 spiked tires the whole winter last year and I'm still alive.
better off with studdable tyres, you only need to put a few in for black ice
not really what, cheap tyres don't have as much fiber on the side walls, having stubbable tyres stops you looking like a twat at mid day when the sun comes out, or the snow plough has cleared all the main roads
Why hasn't Honda produced a worthy successor to this yet?
I guess Mazdas MX5 is it.
Uhh, no.
No man. MX5 is completely different.
The bug freaking out on your hood at 1:19 made that shot spectacular.
I drive my S2000 not because it brings me from point A to B, but just because for driving, listening to F22C playing music under the hood, and operating one of the best gear box ever built in a windy country road. Kudo to Honda for making such a wonderful engineering masterpiece!
Bye bye fuel:(
'Bye bye Fuel'? Its not a Rx-8
The fuel economy sucks because of the gearing. Honda engineering had specific criterion when designing that side of it, and fuel economy was not as much on the docket. Reportedly, they wanted to hit max speed, max RPM, and max gear all at the same time. So 162mph, 9000rpm, 6th gear. That means a "cruise" rpm of 4500rpm at around 80 mph. It's just not going to be as efficient as a much larger engine loping at 1200rpm.
If you drive it like a normal human being, hitting 22mpg in town and 26mpg on the highway is within reason (I know someone who gets these numbers). If you drive it enthusiastically like I do, 18mpg is normal in town. Highway obviously won't be affected unless you are a speed demon and drive in triple digits. If you are racing it or driving like you stole it, that is very different, but the cost of track time, tickets, and consumables (like tires, clutch, brakes, rear diff lol) will far outweigh the cost of fuel...
Also, it's 240hp, not 220 for the AP-1 gen cars (at the crank).
Ah lol I see. Info for the win anyway :)
YES VTECH! I'VE BEEN WAITING
One of the best s2000 reviews out there, made me smile the whole time 😍
Really like your videos! I have an s2000 as well and you definitely have to bring it to autocross. That's where it shines. Also, instead of decreasing the rear spring rate to make it less twitchy, you probably want to get a stiffer front sway instead. That's what all the autocrossers do with this car =). There's a few to choose but I'd recommend the Karcepts one. Have fun!
You're pushing 1 million, man. x)
There is an AP1 Near me for sale! Your videos have given me great insight to the car, I may have to give it a home :) Please keep up the great work!
I love how it manages to bring a grin to your face every time you accelerate - that's when you know you've found the right car
Perfect road, day, and countryside for that car. Wow.
Completely agree about the ideal gear ratios.
at 0:39 i was like, wow that shifter is soo smooth! as you said later in the vid as well
noice! glad yr having fun
Beautiful Northwest landscape reminds me of Northeastern Poland!!
Just got a 2005 S2000 with 49k miles🔥 Im binge watching all your S2K videos now😂
I am no fan of Hondas but I love watching you drive them.
Youre the man dude
An engineering masterpiece!
I am always amazed at how many words you can fit into an 11 minute video.
Only youtuber that drives with both hands on the wheel! Props
I too have a 02 like yours. It's extremely notchy, the shifter!
I had the photo of prototype of this car in my cubicle. It was to be mine. This was in 1999. Just when I could afford it, it was discontinued. I'm like you when it comes to old cars, I don't buy em. Glad you like it though. It sounds amazing and is performance done correctly 👍
My Dad had a 2002 S2000 and MAN was it a blast! BTW: His tires were around $150 each front and over $200 each rear for what Honda recommended... Thanks for updating us on your ride!
Dam that vehicle looks so good. Now i want one.
My RX-8 revs to 9K too. I enjoyed your rotorary engine videos. The reason behind me buying it. 13b life
Great video! Never owned them, but I have driven both AP1 and AP2 s2000's, and even the Club Racer version in an autocross. That CR was a bear to drive, but wow was it fun, and the blue paintjob was beautiful! Would love to own any version, but with a Prelude Type SH in the stable (a fun Honda in its own right), my wife would definitely disapprove. :p
