22 Free Things You Can Take from a Hotel Room

  • Hey, it’s the source of those 18 tiny shampoo bottles and bars of soap in that bottom drawer of your bathroom cabinet! Yep, I’m talking about hotels and all the stuff we like to take from them, even if we don’t use it! But be careful there, sticky fingers - you’re technically only allowed to take certain things!
By the way, if you ever want to take something from a hotel room but doubt you can, simply ask if you can purchase the item or check if your hotel has an online shop where you can buy all those cute pillows and soft blankets. Because, yeah, you can’t take the bedding and towels!

    SUMMARY:
    - That bar of soap is there for you and only you to use. The next person who stays in your room will obviously get a new one.
    - Feel free to take your Barbie-sized toothpaste and mouthwash to-go when you check out. Some hotels also provide travel-sized toothbrushes for guests.
    - Hey, if the hotel so kindly left you some shaving stuff, kindly accept the gift, even if you packed your own!
    - Shoeshine kits usually include black shoe polish, a shine cloth, and shoeshine brush.
    - A hairbrush or comb is yours. But any other hair tools you find in a hotel room, like a hair-dryer or straightener, shouldn't be taken.
    - While you’re stocking up on writing utensils, go ahead and throw the envelopes in your bag too. It’s one of those things you always forget to buy even though you need it more often than you realize.
    - You can grab any reading materials the hotel has left for you to entertain yourself.
    - If your hotel provides stuff to make warm beverages right in the room, then don't hesitate to take the tea bags, coffee pouches, and sugar packets if you want.
    - If you're staying in a country where drinking tap water isn't okay, then most local hotels will stock your room with free bottled water.
    - To avoid extra spending, you should assume that all food and drinks in your hotel room are not free.
    - Some hotels put price tags on the bathrobe hanger to make sure guests are aware that it’s not a free item you can take home.
    - Slippers are not reusable, so if you leave them in the room, they'll get thrown away. That's why it's no biggie if you get hold of one pair.
    - Obviously, umbrellas are pretty expensive compared to slippers, but in most cases, you can keep one.

  • @sebastiannielsen
    @sebastiannielsen Před 4 lety +26

Also note one thing, is that sometimes they check rooms daily, even for a longer stay. And that usually means that if the bathrobe has a price tag, and you loan it for a day or two, it might be put on the bill, even if you return it before checkout.
Another thing to watch out for: If you DO loan a item and it get set up on bill - DO NOT return it and loan it again. This may cause you to get double billed for the item, especially if there multiple personell checking your room. If you do return a already-billed item, they might put it on checklist (like it was never taken), and then if you take it again, they might go check the latest checklist which said item was unbilled, causing it to be billed again.
So keep in mind, everything that you aren't allowed to take, may not leave the room at all, unless its explicitly specified. Some items you are allowed to loan from the room during the stay, for example umbrellas and such, but forget taking the hairdryer with you to the bath or beach. Even if you return it, it might be already set up on your bill, and then the hotel will usually not refund you. They will write down if some item is missing when they do a daily room check, but they will not write up if the item has returned.
Another thing to watch out for when it comes to minibars: Some minibars have sensors that detect removal of bottles or other items. This means you will be billed for just reading on a bottle, even if you don't drink from it or break the seal. Usually the minibar door will have a warning label about this.
Note that some sensors can be simpler, and only detect removal of bottles (usually a optical sensor or similiar). This means, that if you DO take a bottle and drink from it, DO NOT return it to minibar to keep it cold. The subsuquent removal of the already opened bottle, will usually cause a second bottle to be billed on your account. (unless its a more advanced RFID system that can keep track of already billed bottles).
(This applies even if the minibar just contains one single bottle of each type, because sometimes the systems might not be advanced enough to detect that you have "taken" more bottles that existed from the beginning, because they haven't implemented a stock counter that stops billing once you have "taken" the number of bottles that existed from the beginning, and will usually continue billing you for each removal of a item, even if it already billed you for everything that existed in the minibar)
Usually the rules are written on a sticker or sign posted on the minibar, which means that the hotel WILL NOT correct a billing if you messed up and caused more bottles than you actually taken, to be billed from your account. Its just some extra cash in the pocket for the hotel that they earn from guest who break the minibar rules.

Apparently Embassy Suites encouraged you to take their branded mugs. Hubby shyly took one, not both, when there on business, as unsure of transatlantic hotel etiquette. The mugs are nicely tall and thin, useful storage. Each time he went there he brought one back (each time only taking one, not both) until we had a ridiculous number. I donated all except one, in "sets" of 6, and was surprised when the charity shop told me later that they'd been popular.

We both remarked on the horrible tasting water (it was bore water) & were happy with the free bottled water in the room. I reminded her the 2 free bottles was fine for or it was $9.50 a bottle for each extra one. We had a $15.00 / day allowance & remarked she owed the hotel money already. The next morning I passed her my 2 extra bottles from my room.

While watching this I kept thinking of the 1969 movie "If This Is Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium", about a tour bus that covers nine European countries in 18 days. One of the supporting characters is Harry Dix (played by Aubrey Morris) who brings tons of suitcases, all mostly empty... *and proceeds to take everything that isn't nailed down.* At the conclusion, a sign reading "The End" is shown... and the camera zooms out to show it's a picture... and Dix takes it off the wall and tries to hide it in his coat and sneak off... «grin»

Right?... I only ever see soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand lotion, tea bags, single serve coffee pouches, two coffee filters, non-dairy creamer, sugar and artificial sweeteners, 16oz. disposable drinking cups, plastic bags and pens with no paper.
The other things on this list, I've never seen. They don't even leave you a way to brew the coffee or tea. You have to call down to the desk and ask for them, and they bring the mugs at that point. Never slippers, bath robes or hair fixer upper things, no rubber duckies, no reading materials, no razors and/or shaving cream, not even a mini fridge.
