  • If you travel by plane quite a lot, dozens of questions can be accumulated in your brain. For example, what are the best shoes to wear at the airport security screening to not be asked to take them off? Or are those scanners you have to go through harmful to your health? Or how long the things seized during the pre-flight inspection can be stored at the airport for?
You’d definitely like to know how to cancel non-refundable tickets and get your money back or how to significantly reduce the costs for transfers, hotels, and food even if it’s your first trip and you don’t have any discount cards. So here's the list of advice you should heed before your next trip.
    TIMESTAMPS:

    SUMMARY:
    - You shouldn't be wary of airport scanners - they don't harm your health.
    - If you have some powder in your baggage, be it some baby formula, flour, or instant drinks, keep it in its original packaging.
    - At some airports, you can buy drinking water right after you pass the security check.
    - Check if the airport or airline sells 24-hour access to a VIP lounge zone. In most cases, you can have free snacks and drinks there.
    - While in the baggage claim area, you might have to pay for Wi-Fi; but in the arrival zone, it's almost always free.
    - If you’re in the middle of a bad cold, but you absolutely have to fly, take a painkiller before the plane takes off and lands.
    - You can’t keep power banks in your checked baggage.
    - When going on a trip, instead of taking the whole perfume bottle, take a tester.
    - If you have a brand-new unopened bottle of nail polish in your carry-on, it's ok. But if you've already used it, put it in your checked luggage.
    - . Seemingly innocent things like plants, seeds, and some types of food may be prohibited if you're flying to Australia, or other particular islands.
    - You're more likely to find unoccupied toilets in the baggage claim area, near customs, next to big cafes, and in waiting lounges.
    - While packing for a long flight, remember to put a couple of tennis balls in your carry-on. If you roll your feet on them during the flight, your legs and feet won't swell up.
    - Statistically, the safest seats are in the tail of the aircraft.
    - If you're traveling through several time zones, try to do more physical activity the day before.
    - If there are lots of empty seats on a plane, and you have the airline's bonus card, you can ask the flight attendants to move you to business class.
    - You can still pay for your onboard purchases with your bank card, even if there's no Internet on the plane. In this case, the money will be withdrawn as soon as you land.

Hey there, BrightSiders! Which of the airports you’ve ever been to is the COOLEST? And why?

  • @theboardshorts
    @theboardshorts Před 4 lety +1307

I now have more questions than answers, and I'm a Flight Attendant! So here are a few disclaimers for the video:
Three month prohibited item storage and delivery is only available in some Canadian and US airports.
Radiation - Your pilots will never fly you into a thunderstorm.
Powders - Flights to/from the UK, no powders, liquids, gels or pastes in carry-on baggage. Except for what you can fit in the little plastic bag.
There are no special clips provided to stop seats reclining. I believe you can buy them online.
Please don't rely on sleeping and showering in airline lounges. These are only at major international airports. Even then, you must be a member, or pay for use.
Don't use Dollars or Euros. Use a card, you'll be charged in your home currency, not the local one.
If you have a cold, take pain-killers AND decongestants/nasal spray/sinus relief. (As much as you can safely take.) You'll have slight ear pain during take off, but a LOT more during descent and landing. Take them one hour before landing, don't wait until you feel the pain.
Underground tunnels - Rare! But look for raised walkways to other terminals, a monorail or courtesy bus.
Tennis balls - In 15 years flying, I've never heard of this one. Try if you want! But swollen feet are not a problem for 90% of passengers.
Safest Seats - Don't even think about this. It would depend completely on the type of crash. But remember, you're 10,000 times more likely to be in a fatal car accident on your way to the airport, than your plane crashing.
Airline Bonus Card - If this is referring to a Frequent Flyer card, by all means try, but do it at check-in. Not on the plane. If you ask a flight attendant, they will probably have no idea what you're talking about. I don't!
I've never seen a sleep capsule, and I don't think I'd like to! Just get to your comfortable hotel instead.
    Happy flying!

We didn't allow anyone to bring in bottles of water. It had to be an empty container or filled with ice. One exception was that you can bring in bottled water if the seal hasn't been broken.

What better way is to mail myself for $75 in shipping than flying from Bangkok, to Japan, to USA for $30,000. Postal Service is the way to travel of the future.

Most airports have benches with "armrests" by now for the sole purpose to prevent exactly that. Have a look around, they are actively preventing any opportunity to lay down in most, if not all airports.
I guess they prefer people shopping rather than napping. So I'm with lynnx here: I wish

@@_annoyed4692 Exactly, that´s what I experience in the US all the time! But in swizerland, in "Zürich", they actually have sleeping quarters at the airport, where you can sleep during a long layover, for about 20 Dollars. You have to go down the staircase from arrival and check in with the lady at the desk, show her your connecting flight ticket and tell her when you want to have your wake up call, and the room you receive is completely darkened, absolutely quiet, no airplane to be heard down there, and the alarmclock on the nighttable will wake you at the very time you requested. Why doesn´t every airport in the world have that???! Anybody would gladly pay 20Dollars for that after a long flight without any sleep!

If you have to fly when you have a cold, take a really strong decongestant early enough for it to take effect before takeoff. This will hopefully reduce congestion enough for the eustachian tubes to do their job of equalizing the pressure as cabin pressure changes. If the pressure can't equalize, your ears can be damaged, and merely masking the pain with an analgesic does nothing to prevent that.

Be patient and dont lose your cool. I was flying home from NYC and we ( wife, toddler and I) were stuck in the last row. On our connecting flight there was an offer to upgrade to first class. I asked about it and the attendant said there was space for all of us. The attendant tried making the upgrade but the computer was giving him issues. I stayed calm and collected and he hooked us up with a free upgrade.

Pack your luggage in different sized cubes, that way if you are asked to open your luggage you can individually pass each section of your luggage through , and its easier to open the cube that has the not allowed item.
Also put all metal items coins and keys and even binder clips into a single pouch so it’s again easy for airlines to check them physically if necessary.
Carry transparent bags to cover your phone watch and individual items through the scanner so small items don’t get left behind in the tray.

If one of your travel companions is a veteran, be sure to check if your airport has a USO there. Sometimes they can bring a family member or a guest in with them, or at least get you a bottle of water when they come out. The USO might even be inside the gate, so that you can get a drink or snacks that you can bring on the plane with you. And please, remember to donate to the USO. Many of our servicemembers have to travel a lot, and always in the least luxurious manner, and the USO provides some comfort for them.

#3 The radiation you experience on a plane is actually 30 times higher than on ground. Not that it's something to really worry about. A 11 hour flight gives you roughly two weeks of radioactive exposure.
#6 You can bring an empty bottle through security in every part of the world, not just in US and Canada.
#9 At most duty free shops you can request an ICAO approved "Security Tamper Evident Bag" to have your items placed in, allowing you to take them through security.
#12 The Ah (Amp-hours) on the power banks doesn't matter. It's the Wh (Watt-hours) that does. The restriction is 100Wh and is for all devices with Lithium batteries in them, including power banks and laptops. If a power bank is at 20Ah (20,000mAh) you multiply that with the voltage (3.8V) giving you 76Wh. Nearly every laptop that exists, even the craziest gaming laptops, has a battery less than 100Wh for that reason. And if your Lithium batteries catches fire during flight it's easier to get to if it's in the overhead locker than in the cargo hold.

If traveling with someone that needs assistance (elderly) like wheel chair. You will of course get that type of help, but it is also likely that you will skip the whole line at all types of stops, (registration) (passport check) baggage check) and it will also likely be easier to get through. And you will have a low chance of missing flights, while if you do, the airport is responsible as it was their job to accompany the person there, and they will pay for the next flight to that destination.

Bonus card? I presume you mean an airlines membership/loyalty club card. Even with lots of empty seats, most UK airlines will not upgrade you unless you are willing to pay or use your miles for the upgrade. Love to try it though...if I ever get to travel on a non-busy flight! Also, I believe the airlines themselves say it's safer to sit in the middle of the aircraft. The "coolest" airport I know is "Zürich". They have sleeping accomodations below the airport where you can check in a room and sleep for as long as you can afford, (like 4-6 hours before your connecting flight) for as much as 20 Dollars in a completely dark room, with only the bed, a washbasin and a little nighttable WITH alarmclock on it. You have to show the lady at the check in of the sleeping quarters your ticket, and tell her at what time you want your "wake up call", and the alarmclock on the nighttable will wake you up at the time you requested! And it´s really absolutely quiet down there, you don´t hear any planes taking off or landing, it´s really amazing, and absolutely heaven sent when you come from a long flight from America and need to change airlines in Europe. Best airport in the world! And to get to the sleeping quarters you just go down the stairs ALL the way, right from the arrival, and you are there! Why don´t they have that at every airport??!!!

Get TSA pre check its good for five years and allows you to go through a metal detector instead of a body scanner and you don't have to remove your shoes, belt, light jackets, laptops, and 311 liquids. There is also a version for international flights coming into the US. Also look for additional security check points in bigger airports their lines tend to be shorter.

6:57 i had to run through that underground tunnel to get to my connecting flight to hamburg to go visit some friends. tip: if you have a connecting flight, give yourself at least an hour and 15 minutes in between flights, especially if you are on a long flight before or switching from international to domestic or vice versa. in a lot of airports that i have been in, the international flights and domestic flights are about a 10-15 minute walk from each other, and coming off of a long flight can both take longer to get off, and also may take a little bit longer than predicted to land.

I didn't see this one in the comments, and I think it is one of the most important for parents. Pacifiers for babies and gum (or very light snacks) for young children is crucial. Adults automatically begin working their jaw and swallowing as their ears begin to pop, but children don't know to do this and babies simply begin to WAIL as pressure builds in their ears.
My source is my wonderful mother, who had to take us on multiple flights.

Video: “You shouldn’t be worried about airport scanners, they don’t harm you!”
Me : actual, for special people like me they do, I have a pace maker which controls my heart rate, I’m not allowed to go near microwaves, vacuums, magnets and yes you guessed it, airport scanners. You see if I were to go through one of theses, first of all the scanner would start beeping as my pacemaker is made of metal, tho good luck finding it, it’s inside my body! Second of all even if I get through the scanner uses magnetic pulses that can harm my pacemaker and since it helps control my heart rate it’s technically harming my health too, because of this I have a special doctor card which I can show the workers there and they’ll do a pat down instead. I don’t need pat downs in the us anymore though because they don’t use scanners, they use a certain type of X-ray machine which u stand inside this giant circle, the door closes, the whole thing spins while you make the fortnite t pose XD no I’m serious that’s what u have to do, then it stops spinning and I’m on my way but it doesn’t harm me in any way.

Bring a headlight - useful if the overhead light is bad or you don't want to disturb your neighbour and especially when you need some light when looking for something in your bag. Also you can bring sewing and knitting equipment on board, if you like to pass time like that.

I have gold status with one major airline, so I get priority boarding. But I choose to sit in the back of the plane. Few people are back there that early, so I can get settled in before anyone else is there. I travel with tools so have to check my bag and wait for it at the destination, so I'm not losing any time.

It was so ridiculous! When I was eight years old, my family and I traveled to Florida and I decided to take some sand from the beach and put it in a bottle so I would always remember that trip. But on our way home, the scanner people had to SAMPLE my SAND! Even though we told them it was sand! Plus, it even LOOKED A LOT like NORMAL SAND! 😂
