No One Needs to Arrive 2 Hours Before Flight, Here's Why

  • You’re running through the airport, waiting in endless security lines, dealing with your baggage, rushing yet again to the gate - if only you’d arrived two hours early! Right? Not necessarily. And airports know that.
For example, along with lots of other secrets, they’re not telling you that some hubs have facial recognition scanners that can easily track you. Or that the cheapest days to fly are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Or that arriving at the airport 2 hours before your flight isn't really necessary. But why do airports recommend to do that?

    SUMMARY:
    - If the situation allows, use online taxi apps to order a car. If you can’t, then make sure to find out the rate in advance.
    - Bring an empty water bottle through the security check and find a water refill station - they’re usually near the restrooms.
    - The cheapest days to fly are Tuesdays and Thursdays. And if, for some reason, you want to buy the most expensive ticket, opt for a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
    - Bags that are loaded last usually appear first on the baggage carousel.
    - Some airports don't allow you to carry liquids over 3.4 oz through your layover destination, even if they're from duty-free and in sealed bags!
    - Even if your flight doesn't offer a hot meal or snacks, it might still be cheaper to eat on board than at the airport, especially if you have the airline's credit card.
    - The arrival time includes some wiggle room for potential small delays, taxiing from the runway, and so on.
    - After you pass all the security checks and passport control, you have "the golden hour" ahead. That's 60 minutes during which you're most likely to open your wallet.
    - A nice conversation with a security agent might not be what it seems. It's not that they don't find you fascinating - but getting all chatty could be a special technique that checks your behavior.
    - Most hubs hold an annual lost luggage sale. After paying an entry fee, you can bid on electronics, clothes, bags, and whatnot.
    - If you have an opportunity, don't exchange cash at the airport - you'll never get a good rate there.
    - A medical study found out the connection between living near an airport and an increased risk of heart problems.
    - Many airports have places for a quiet retreat, for example, yoga studios or even gyms with swimming pools. But they're typically hidden away - otherwise, they'll get packed with travelers.

Same here: This is more relaxing, and you can enjoy even the start of your holidays when you do that. May be different if you fly for business duties. And in my opinion the best thing is to start your journey from a big airport (you have a lot of shops, restaurants where you can relax) but arrive at a small airport, where it is fast to get out (of course, most times that combination is not possible).

It only takes one terrorist pulling something somewhere in the world in the hours before your flight, to cause excessive lines in security as a new rule comes into play. Showing up just before your flight is a gem from pre 9/11. No one gets to enjoy that anymore.

As an airline employee who sometimes depends on people missing their flights because they show up late this video is great. In reality most people should give themselves 90 min - 2 hours unless you have tsa precheck, know the airport and more. Tsa lines can be long. Especially if you plan on checking bags or traveling with kids you need 2 hours to account for variables.
Honestly the number of inaccuracies in this video makes me question all the bright side videos I have previously enjoyed and found interesting.

The most unpredictable part of air travel is the drive to the airport if it's in a big city, like NY or similar. That said, I would think it's best to have the car parked about 2 hours ahead of the flight, or a drop off at the terminal door 90 minutes ahead of the flight. What you are aiming for is a smooth transition to be at your gate a few minutes before boarding, which is roughly 30 minutes before the posted flight time. What they don't cover in this video is that international terminals tend to be more crowded, which is why it may take longer. Another thing they didn't cover is ALWAYS carry a photo ID when traveling and ALWAYS put all of your normal pocket items into your shoulder bag when going through security. You can't believe how much time that will save for you and everyone behind you.

And when traveling, if you need a taxi, ALWAYS put a reservation for one at least 5 days before the actual drive. Just do a general web search such as "Taxis in my zip code" and find out the rates ahead of time. Then you just call the cab company and reserve a car for that day.

  • @25scigirl

I want to be early and you should arrive 2 hours early because the lines to ticket counter and security gates get long. Your flight could also be early and they may board and/or leave early. It's when your plane is delayed and that is when you want to occupy yourself with things to do while you wait.
Good video though and I like to plan my travels and I always check my flight status.

  • @onlineo2263
    @onlineo2263 Před 4 lety +14

You don't need to reach your airport 2 hour early. The issue is that if you reach it late you miss your flight, now let's say its a holiday /vacation. Our last one was London Heathrow to LAX. We live 3-4 hour taxi away from Heathrow (taxi is roughly the same price as train or airport parking, and more convenient as no drive after a long flight and no hauling car seats and suitcases and tired toddlers from 1 train to a subway train etc.) . Our flights cost £2000 premium economy for a family of 4. If we get stuck in traffic or a queue at immigration and we miss the flights we loose the flight. We also loose the £6000 of accommodation we have prepaid and the car hire and our whole holiday. So our next option would be to rebook flights for sometime in the following 24 hours. Most planes were fully booked and we would be paying another £4000 extra for our flights. Not wanting this stress is why we arrived at the airport 2.5 hours early.

As someone that works at the airport, I can tell you one thing. It is always better for you to come early than late. Because of videos like this, people arrive 1 hour before the flight leaves, which can cause an airline to be late. Why?
Most airlines close their check-in counters 1 hr before the flight leaves for intl flights and 45 mins before domestic flights. On a daily basis, we refuse around 40 to 50 people on average because they arrive late or they don't have the proper travel documents.
Please arrive 4 hours before departure time as there might be traffic on the road, or a huge lineup at checkin counters, or at security. Just because you are late, it does not mean that you will be allowed to go in front of everyone in the lineup. We have forced people to stay in line before and you might be surprised on how their turn came up 1.5 hours after the plane has left.

Sure, arriving at the airport an hour before departure may seem smart, but I often have checked baggage and I have to get boarding passes at the kiosk, etc. Depending on how many people are on my flight and where the ultimate destination is, I would rather be two hours early to allow for time to get through security (sometimes the lines are quite long) and then relax.

I've experienced to be at the airport more than an hour before my flight in a busy airport and I was stressed. The immigration queue was long. You should pay attention to the minimum amount of time the airline requires if you're checking a bag. For most domestic flights, it's an hour before takeoff to get your checked bags on the flight.

    • @runningfromabear8354

I worked in aviation for 15 years. Sometimes there are major delays in security that cause 1-2 hour delays. For transcontinental flights, I arrive at the airport 3 hours early. I saw too many people miss their plane on the days when we had major hold ups in security. I mean, you guys can do whatever you want, but airport employees aren't showing up less than 2 hours before flights. If Bright Side and others like to gamble, go ahead. But don't scream at employees when you miss your flight because you stood in excessively long lines because the security rules changed that day because of a major security incident that morning.

@@runningfromabear8354 I agree. I would rather arrive three even four hours early than to be five minutes late. As far as I'm concerned, the moment I leave my house, my holiday has begun. I'm happy getting the tube (I live in London) to the airport and dining at the airport, then grabbing a coffee. Rather than stressing out and forgetting something or worse still, losing something.

  • @aislynnco

I would rather be early and spend some of my money while waiting for my flight, that run late and waste the money that I've spent to buy my flight ticket. The money that I've spent on buying some things and snacks is way more cheaper that my flight ticket. I would rather spent some money that miss my flight. @Bright Side

I arrive at the airport about 2 1/2 to 3 hours early even for a domestic flight within Australia to allow enough time to reach the gate, not to mention allowing for a gate change, get something to eat, go to the toilet, etc. On one occasion, my mum and I and quite a few other passengers nearly missed the flight because of a sudden gate change, only arriving at the airport 1 1/2 hour early.

Depends. If I'm staying on my continent, I arrive 2 hours before my flight. But for transcontinental flights I arrive 3 hours early. After decades of flying, when things have gone sideways on me, it's the transcontinental ones that have the least back up options. Especially warm season and holidays in the northern hemisphere. All of the flights can be fully booked, so you miss your flight and it can take a day or two find a different flight to rebook on at the last minute.

I always aim to arrive at airport two hours before departure, this is to allow leeway if journey to airport is delayed, never missed first flight yet; route I am on requires three flights each way. Any delays after check in for first flight causing missed flights to two and/three is airlines responsibilty; hotels and meals if necessary at their expensive.

My uncle and aunt always arrive late. My aunt would smile at the counter agent and apologize with a bogus story about flat tire on taxi or something and a lot of time the agent would help them to skip ahead in the security line. If that didn't work, the next trick was for her to talk with a male TSA agent with a little bit flirting about the situation and they would get ahead in the security line.
Given the fact that they continue to arrive late, I guess it's working out very well for them.
