I love that the reason we can understand every species is because of Universal Translators, and that this would be what they actually sound like without them.
You get a small bit of that when talking to Thane. If he calls femshep Siha she doesn't understand, and thinks her translator has messed up.
@@Terror_Official That too. I always imagined that the Turians would sound like birds, Asari would sound like fish, and the Salarians would sound like chittering insects. Glad to know at the very least the bird one was sort of correct.
I wonder how these translators work... Are you always with headphones on ? Or are they implanted or something
@@bioticgod itâs probably in the omni tools
I don't know why, but that's kinda what I had imagined the Asari sounding like. Almost like you are hearing a kind of echo in the voice because even though they are speaking and they are moving air the way humans talk, but you hear it directly in your mind and not through sound hence the kinda bouncy echo it has.
I wish we got a mission in the trilogy where as our translators are broken and we have to work together with our squadmates to try to figure out each other's languages and complete the mission.
That would've been hilarious. Maybe we should ask Bioware to include that in the next Mass Effect? đ
This needs to happen
Best part i feel is that if u also brought ur human squadmates they just speak different languages than u (james would be spanish and kaiden is like Quebec french, etc) would add some extra funny stuff
@@Memelord-md5hs And Miranda speaks the unintelligible language that is Australian.
that should've been mandatory in like one or two of the three games
So bascially:
Asari - Your average Sim from The Sims series
Turian - A choking cat
Salarian - Someone heavily drunken
Krogan - Nothing changed
Volus - Me using toilet paper tube to make me sound funny
The best comparison yet! đ
I figured the asari would still have English as their base since they are still a psychic species.
More like:
Turian - A Halo Jackal.
Volus - A deep Japanese anime voice.
both Mass Effect and The Sims are from EA, really Asari one sounds like simlish
The Turian voice has got to be the inspiration for the Vorcha. It sounds too similar.
This also makes me wonder what Shepard sounds like to Garrus
@@MrHulthen Maybe they also planned for Turians to turn on the galaxy at some point? There's quite a lot of dialogue options in ME1 that allows you to demonise them after all, and a lot of Turians in ME1 are either jerks or plain evil. It's hard to say really. It's interesting to think about though, seeing how their real voices sound like the Vorcha, a Terminus species.
Don't "aaah" me, you sound like a vorcha.
@@cristiancojocaru9821 fun fact the voice actor for male Shepherd also voices the vorcha.
Humans probably sound like Banjo Kazooie characters, all wub wub wa wubba wub or something to the alien races.
@@Zushi_Tsunami Not only the vorcha but also the hannar "because it is a big stupid jellyfish".
I honestly expected Turrians to sound more avian, and not like drunk Klingongs
đ€Ł
yeah I'd think it would be more screechy
Me too, especially since their voices sound like they're being produced by a syrinx. I would have thought that they'd sound like parrot mimicry.
For some reason Iâd imagined turian voices would of been electronic like lmao

Well the turians were not as bad as I thought it would be, I expected some unholy screeching like some dude got his balls caught in a zipper while stepping on a lego piece.
That would be a horrible way to go...
Your comment killed me XD
I'm done đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđâ
You know, I actually imagine they recorded these "native language" sounds to base their mouth movements on. They couldn't pull off very convincing English mouth movement with those alien faces and technology of the time so they made a rough gibberish sound to vaguely match in their animation as an excuse.
So basically, take the voices with a grain of salt.
This makes me want to romance Garrus even more, now.
Glad i could help đ€Ł

Volus is hilarious. It sounds like some guy speaking into a really thick pillow.
I think it fits perfectly, considering they come from a planet with much denser atmosphere and gravity. Forgot the name, but there is some heavy gas which acts the opposite of helium when inhaled and gives you such a deep voice.
I like how they did the lines for the biotic god, the true star of mass effect.
Well their suits do remind me of a stereotypical neckbeard when they speak, so now I'm just imagining a Volus is just holding a body pillow under the suit
@@frederiksdHexofluoride. It's a lot of fun
sounds like Simlish
I love the idea of universal translators. Just the idea that we hear them talking English and they hear us speaking their languages. I can just imagine Garrus talking to Shepard from his POV. Just imagining Shepard screeching like that makes me laugh.
for a series that ended its main run nearly 10 years ago its crazy how you can still find new things about it
And that same franchise is making a comeback soon. I mean, I guess they technically already did with the Legendary Edition.
Im hoping you can play a new race in the game like a newbie race starting spacefaring
Asari kinda sound like Simlish. "Blua dee ba doo" xD
Hahaha yes
Krogan sounds exactly like I thought it would tho đ
I like to think that they sound and act a little like ME's version of the Klingons from Star Trek, Salarian's would be the Vulcans of the series, Turians, the Romulans and the Asari would be let's say the Trill or something
@@ianmurphy9955 Salarians would the Romulans and the Turians more like The Cardassians. Asari are a mix of Bethazoids with Vulcans (with all the mind melding thing, not so much the supression of emotions).
Ahhhh thanks man! How could I forget Cardassia, yeah no you're right there
Whisper sweet nothings into my ears, Garrus.

A very important note: ME1 in the Codex says that most races learn languages ââof other races, which explains Tali's accent, for example. For the most part, translators are only used to communicate with the Elkors and Hanaras due to the fact that they communicate through the pheromones and subtle movements and bioluminescence that other races cannot understand.
Elcor actuallly communicate through pheromones and subtle movements to one another, hence why they declare their "mood" before saying what they wanna say, like "Cautiously, how do you know I like spicy chicken wings?" I've not seen anything to suggest they communicate through soundwaves of sort (although I may be mistaken on such)
Elcor sounds like farts.
so tali is the only alien squadmate who speaks fluent English, another reason for me to love her đ
Not entirely accurate. Some individuals learn SOME languages of their close friends or the cultures they are interested in. There are 6000 human languages and a similar number for each species. Hanar were taught language by the Protheans, so they are capable of learning and understanding languages, but not physically able to speak them without a synthesised voice provided by the translator (since they don't have mouths). Elcor translators are programmed to react to pheromones to inform the listener of their emotions.
In other words, most characters are speaking in their native tongue, which gets translated back and forth in conversation. Hanar communicate with eachother via bioluminescence. However to communicate with other species they learn a language, and anything they hear gets autotranslated into that language.
There is a theory that Mordin is actually speaking Shepard's language, as most of his battle dialogue refers to English-specific things, and his speech pattern is broken.
This would make little sense tough. It can only work if these races could naturally make the same sounds like other races. Like parrots with humans. In reality we would need machine translators, otherwise we couldn't learn to speak alien language any more than we could naturally talk to whales, same for them.
I see now. I'm guessing they originally wanted to do the same thing they did in star wars kotor 1. Having each npc alien have their own language and sound.
That would've been so cool! Maybe not exactly like the way they sound here though.
It wouldn't make sense from a story point of view as humans are new to the galaxy and don't understand the other races languages and vice versa.
@@TheGingiGamer it's been about 30 years. I think it's possible.
@@rustybushel6220 Maybe
The Asari even sound kinda like the Twi'lek.
could you imagine the first time humans encountered the Turians and heard them speak? they must have been like WTF! đł
Also, the Asari kind of sound like Twi'leks from KotOR
The first time humans encountered TUrians was the first contact war, so yeah
@@DAETRICH no it wasnât ⊠it was during the American Civil War of 1861 đ€Šđœââïž
I mean what would you expect an alien to sound like? they would sound weird
@@porsche911sbs yes, thank you Captain Copernicus, I know they would sound weird, what I meant was theyâd sound scary as hell.
I think they were more shock that they were massacred by them rather than hearing them speak
I remember reading up on a theory regarding Mordinâs strange way of speaking English. Every other alien race sounds perfect most likely because of the translators. But the theory states that Mordin isnât using a translator and so his way of speaking English is because he himself studied the language and is directly talking to Shepard.
Also considering that his song rhymes means it's probably in the English language as another language wouldn't rhyme properly
@@Mrnumber ah yes,
âI AM THE VERY MODEL OF A SCIENTIST SALARIAN

But for real, itâs a cool little thing to think of
I would love a mission in future mass effect where the translators break down or malfunction on some mission, and you have to hear them talking in their original voices while no one really understands each other, maybe have to sign through the mission.
that would be amazing
The Green Lantern cartoon did an episode like that when Hal, Kilowog, and Razor lost their rings! đđź
I'd love it if shepard starts talking French or something when that happens.
I'm thinking they went this route with the "auto translators" because recording all that unique dialogue in those voices and practically creating full on languages was an unnecessary waste of time, rightly so. Also I can imagine that being a significant strain on the voice actors.
Bioware did something like this with the Knights of the Old Republic games, but the lines were always the same few for the aliens who didn't speak english. When I played those 2 games way back when that got really annoying very fast and I started jumping through the dialogue once I got done reading it. I'm super glad they went the route they did with Mass Effect, but it's nice to see they actually did keep the idea of unique alien speech in mind.
It's my theory they did recorded those to base their facial animations on. Something to make consistent, if gibberish, mouth motion in conversations. Imagine being the poor animator trying to make Garrus look like he's speaking English convincingly.
Think itâs like humans are still the main race in Star Wars while humans are the backrole in Mass Effect
They would have to invest a lot more for what people will probably see as annoying
None of those except Krogan make sense.đ
Especially Turian, that sounds more like a Vorcha.
I thought they all made sense, although I'd think the Turians would sound even more alien, screechy/chirpy like a bird. Krogan I'd expect to be low growls like an alligator.
Grunt sounds like Jabba the Hutt đđ
Asari and salarians kinda made sense too, same for the Volus.
Garrus. Noooo.
Yes
Asari sound pretty good, and the Turians, well.. whilst I don't mind them sounding whatever the devs or writers wanted, 1 critical flaw is that the Turians (and Protheans) have a low vibration in there voice when speaking when speaking to the player. whilst the translations would change how their speech comes out, I doubt such soundwaves would be cut out let alone implemented as shown with the Turians. Only other question would be what Sci-Fi reasoning do they have for there lips being able to match to human spoken words if they are using translators
I like to headcanon that there's a sort of galactic common language, most likely based off of asari and salarian mouth movements. That would explain the turians trying to mimic it but with difficulty and they would likely still need translator help or a modified version of the language. Since humans have a similar anatomy to asari, they would probably be able to speak it fairly well, however only being part of the galactic community for ~30 years I wonder how many humans would be fluent. There's still a lot of things I'd have to work out for this headcanon to work but I feel it better allows for the speech variation we see between species in the game
Well, Javik isn't speaking prothean at all except for right before Shepard touches him. After that, he's talking in english at least with us, as he does point this out when Shepard asks.
Suspension of disbelief. I just pretend that they are mouthing their own language and Shepard just heard it in English.
I did expect the Turians to have that lower, double voice sound they do speaking with the translator.
@@kratkartan1486 Plus the Protheans are speaking english in the flashback as well. Not the first time non-human species are speaking english to each other without a human there.
I love Garrus even more now.
Since there is no voice sample for the Quarians, I can still pretend Tali sounds like the best girl she is meant to be.
Quarians are said to be very similar to humans, so their voices would probably sound pretty close to ours.
She sounds like Cookie Monster
â@@82dorrin Yeah, a quarian in one of the novels managed to speak perfect English unaided with the ease of any native speaker, so they'd probably sound near-identical to us.
AMEN!
@@baboongamingmgrr nice
Love it!
BioWare did put at least one of those voices into the game as ambient sounds. The Turian voice plays in the background of Flux - I always thought it was weird they had vorcha voices in there since they didn't get introduced until the second game. The more you know :)
Yeah they are audible in Flux :D
Next play through I'm going to have to pay more attention.
@@MrHulthen and in Coras den when talking to septimus
It's in Flux, in the stairs
You can actually hear some of the non human speech in game normally. Top spot that comes to mind is Flux in ME1, the background chatter is all non-translated
Also, I feel like all the male race voices are just Mark Meer having fun making whatever sounds he feels these races should make
Mark Meer having fun going wild and just making up alien voices is the most pure thing I have heard today.
I think more than that, it was to base face animation off of. Something other than human to justify random mouth flapping rather than actual English mouthing. Especially for the Turians. I can only Imagine trying to make that look convincing in 2008.
@carbongo I've always wondered why they didn't translate that though. Or maybe those are the names of the varren he releases?
they sound relatively normal, not sure what they'd sound like with human languages though
With turians in particular, their mouths wouldn't be able to form the same kind of speech that humans do. They probably _couldn't_ speak human languages any more than we could speak an alien language that required sub-vocalizations or multiple tongues.
Turians at least would probably talk like Vorcha. I doubt Hanar can even actually speak, and really every race with lips could actually probably speak english if not a bit accented, like the quarians. Knowing Tali, she probably actually took the time to learn english. I mean, she did download a lot of things that help her understand our cultures, with language being among them.
@@82dorrin yeah that's what I was thinking too, kinda wish they had an option to enable/disable the alien voices
@@kratkartan1486 yeah, Quarians are probably the closest race to humans in Mass Effect... Iâd think theyâd be able to speak English and other human languages.
Well... itâs debatable if Asari would be closest to humans... we dunno.
@@kratkartan1486
Hanars don't talk!
They use Empathy or Telepathy to communicate your mind! Brain or whatever crap?đ
The only ones where the voices made sense were the Krogan and Salarian, based on their style and biology it fit them the best.
However, not saying this because of any other reason, but the Turians language doesn't fit their character. The Turian should have - and I always been led to believe - a tone more similar to Krogan except softer and quieter. Granted while it is more in line with raptor vocals, it doesn't work.
Turian voices are just so wet for a species that is literally incapable of sealing their mouths
Feel like that sounds like the Vorcha and not the Turian
Most of the other languages fits how they sound, like they are actually saying the words in the same voice
The Asari voice also makes sense in the same way.
The Turian voice sounds like the Jackals from the Halo franchise, which is shocking because all Turian voices in English are âdeepâ and âsmoothâ sounding.
Asari kind of just sounds like Simlish.
Asari: I'm blue, da ba dee da ba daa...
Now that song is stuck in my headđ
This killed me đ€Łđ. Thank you!
Hearing Turians native speech explains a lot about the first contact war
Mordin kinda sounds like that Geonosian general from Attack of the Clones lol.
Bioware probably had samples from when they made KOTOR, so it could actually be Geonosian. I'm leaning more towards a fan did this, though.
yes!! i kept imagining different Star Wars Aliens for each one... I Especially felt like the Asari sounded like Twi'leks ...
I think it would have been a really powerful moment if when the Normandy was doing the Evac for your party in the last run of ME3 when they were wounded their universal translators were broken so the romance partner tries to make sure Shepard knows they love them through the language barrier.
Thanks for this. I was always wondering how they really sound. And no, nothing could ever spoil Garrus' ..ehm.. calibrations
The Krogan and Salarians sound exactly as I expected.
Haha yep
Someone has got to get Garrus's VA to speak Turian.
The Salarian voice and dialect was fascinating!
Sing songy in a way :D
@@MrHulthen Makes me wonder what Mordin actually sounds like singing his version of Modern Major General...
@@Terror_Official Chances are he learned English and sung it exactly as shown.
Worst thing is they must hear the real voice and the translation at the same time đ If English isn't your first tongue and you ever watched a cheap translated show, you know what I mean!
Huh, probably what the humans in the first contact war heard when they fought the turians. That must have been extra terrifying.
why do you think the turians were called birds? a number of birds make screeches like that.
@@toomanyaccounts and to me Turians resemble birds in a way. The humans called them âthe birdsâ in The First Contact War.
All of those sound rather funny to me xD now, the question I have is, how does Shepard sound like if listened through our alien friend's translators? Let's take Garrus for example, I wonder what he has been hearing this entire time while talking with Shepard xD

Turians honestly just sound like my German coworker when I weld his tools into his toolbox again
I'm calling BS on this. For all the people saying it reminds them of Kotor that's cause these are sound files from Star wars either raised or lowered. Garrus is using higher pitched Jawa. Salarian is using Rodian and so on.
Nope, it's literally ripped out of the ps3 versions audio :)
I always heard weird noises in flux and couldn't figure out what it was

This is my favourite Mass Effect or Mass Effect related video on the internet
Most of these need some vocal processing, but the Salarian conlang is *perfect*
I'm so intrigued by the other voices, but the krogans were exactly what I'd expected. Perfect.
The Turian in your video seems to be saying "Kurtos kolacs", I didn't know they liked Hungarian pastries lol

Garrus can whisper in my ear like that any day
I don't care what my boi Garrus sounds like for real. He's still my buddy, hubby and long lost Turian brother. Depending on if I romance him or not.
I still love Garrus even after hearing his true voice. I still find him attractive and will Always love him
Legit just sounds like sims talking to eachother
They all make so much sense, none are out of character at all
Knowledge can be a burden... we neeed to collectively forget these Voices. :-0
These make a lot more sense than aliens speaking English.
With turians in particular, their mouths are structured in a way that they likely _couldn't_ speak human languages even if they wanted to. Any more than humans could speak an alien language that required sub-harmonic vocalizations or multiple tongues.
that is true tho

I would love to hear the Drell and Prothean language. I know with Thane we get a few words in Drell, but I would love to hear it in conversation.
You actually get to hear the prothean language when recruiting Javik. When he wakes, he's speaking prothean (even though Shepard can understand him, the game makes it a point to let us hear it since the others can't) up until Shepard touches him.
