What's at the bottom of the ocean -- and how we're getting there | Victor Vescovo

  • Victor Vescovo is leading the first-ever manned expedition to the deepest point of each of the world's five oceans. In conversation with TED science curator David Biello, Vescovo discusses the technology that's powering the explorations -- a titanium submersible designed to withstand extraordinary conditions -- and shows footage of a never-before-seen creature taken during his journey to the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

There's ALL this amazing substance yet they chose to portray these incredible endeavors through the angle of some type of egomaniac, which I personally think is a shame. This is so fascinating - thank you for sharing your work, Victor! I'm looking forward to hearing more about these dives. One of the subjects I teach on in some of my science classes is the bottom of the ocean, but it's really hard to teach a subject that we know so little about. While I appreciate the work Elon is doing, this, to me, is so much more important and it's not comparable.

I wish there was a video out there were you could watch the whole journey from the surface to the bottom so you could get the feel of how deep it actually is, altought might not very exiting for most people, but the darkness down there really fuels your sense of imagination.

Yeah, I flubbed that a little. I meant to be clear and say "16,000 pounds per square inch." It is the equivalent to the weight of three Nimitz-class aircraft carriers sitting on top of the entire sub (if it was in a tub of water that the carriers were sitting on). It is a crazy amount of pressure. It was very difficult to engineer all the systems that could handle that pressure, and still work normally on the surface.

He should hire someone to run social media pages for him. They could post the new species whenever they dive and they'll probably get a decent following. That would help him spread his name and possibly even get funding for further projects... maybe?
Well if he hasn't ready, I just know he doesn't have a insta page.
