- Victor Vescovo is leading the first-ever manned expedition to the deepest point of each of the world's five oceans. In conversation with TED science curator David Biello, Vescovo discusses the technology that's powering the explorations -- a titanium submersible designed to withstand extraordinary conditions -- and shows footage of a never-before-seen creature taken during his journey to the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

It's sad that everyone knows Elon Musk but nobody has heard about Victor Vescovo ,this 7 minutes does not do justice to the achievement here and deserves more coverage
Elon Musk has a very charming persona, This guy is a much better scientist but sadly public speaking may not be one of his strong points
surprisingly no top comments talking about Victor looking like the Lanister from Game of Thrones
Well that is very nice of you to say, thank you, sir.
Its true never heard of this guy
Its sad that everyone knows Elon Musk? Thats quite ignorant and just silly of you ask me.........maybe you should read a little more about what Elon has done in his life.
Honestly the man is a legend, he was an officer in the air force or navy(forgot), became a self made millionaire, climbed 5 of the highest peaks of the world including k2 and everest, and now by his own hand and check dived down to the 5th deepest points on the earth. He deserves a longer interview, a better host and better questions
Agree. I think he deserves a life documentary (not just the excellent Expedition Deep Ocean). Such an interesting story and amazing for science/exploration
When he was asked “so Victor, what have you been up to?”, he should have instead replied with “well, the real question is what have I been down to”.
hAHHAH!! This is my favorite comment.
Hope they don't polute n destroy another part of this beautiful mother earth!! Sucks!
he said he was up on mountains as well)
Shane Richardson He could also ask guest Paris Hilton who she has been down on.
or.. '..what have I been high on!'.
I just want to see hours and hours of the undersea footage! Can't wait!
Discovery Channel tells me they will show the series at the end of this year. Hope so. I can't wait for people to see it.

These questions really dull down the whole talk. This sounds like an advertisement. Could have been really cool though and all respect to the engineers and people involved in this.
Exactly! Has the same kind of bland tone & narrative-navigation that you typically only see in cheap late night infomercials. Sounds like something completely orchestrated by a publishing company... There's ALL this amazing substance yet they chose to portray these incredible endeavors through the angle of some type of egomaniac, which I personally think is a shame. Its weird because its like the "but wait there's more" format but instead of for the product, its for a person.
That's because it IS an advertisement. He literally said the entire goal of their project is to put this submarine into the hands of scientists around the globe.
@@jackhammer8061 that's why private explorers actually suck at contributing to humankind's greater-known-knowledge. If this were funded by any state university or lab, it would be published as a proper documentary. The best privateers are the ones like this, who can tell you they are a privateer going into a pitch but make you almost forget during their pitch. The incredibly awkward interaction here served as a perfect distraction from, and segue into the sales-pitch.
TED is not wikipedia - TED is a for profit company selling ad space on youtube
@@saucybackport tedx talks are a modern soap box format for anyone to step up and give their two cents to whoever will listen. The part where TED profits is when they find a good video from one of the independant tedx archives, and throw it up on this channel for the free ad revenue. TEDx is definitely not adspace. Its an inverted writers guild fueled by orators without a guild to protect the profits of their speeches.
Every time they dive, even for a couple hours they find 3 or 4 new species o.O this is just mind-blowing. Amazing job by those people. I can't wait to see the results of this research she exploration.
@Zfast4you We? 99.9% of all species who ever lived have gone extinct without our help.
What ever floats your boat mate....
Zfast4you damn. So many tears. It’ll be okay.
@Will Pack so either we achieve everything on this planet or it counts for nothing. Great logic bro.
@Will Pack that's some idealistic bullshit that "sounds nice" but doesn't apply to the real world. My point was that even though we can't learn everything it doesn't mean that learning some is useless. It's not all or nothing. There is value in between too.
This dude looks like a Hollywood caricature of a dude who leads expeditions to the bottom of the ocean.
Well, I wish I didn't look like a caricature, but at least I look like a guy that goes to the bottom of the oceans? Not sure I know how to change what I look like.
i thought, more of a villain...but he sounds like a lovely guy
Victor Vescovo you did an absolutely amazing job, and the topic I think is incredibly interesting but very few people know that much about our amazing oceans
He looks a little like Sean Connery from The Hunt for Red October, which is awesome!
@@victorvescovo5773 victor, did you use anybody from the russian sub program, ie alfa class in your titanium work? the sum of knowledge of titanium submersibles must have proliferated after the fall of the soviet union, a lot of ground breaking tech was created around that class of sub.. or was this a progression of the "trieste" program, or..an amalgam? cool that you can do thousands of cycles on that hull and be safe, designing the hatch and portals must have been an nightmare..
Victor is tremendously accomplished. It's great to see a founder of a Private Equity firm using proceeds to fund these projects versus spending it on lavish homes, boats and things just for themselves. Shows that you can have a typical white collar career/background but your interests and pursuits can be just as impactful/interesting.
Victor, your intelligence, drive and passion have brought you incredible success. Your research is so important and so anticipated by us all. We can’t wait to see what you find in the depths. Thank you!
You are extremely kind. Thank you!
I like the dude and what he has to say, but the rehearsed interview style is absolutely cringe
It is better than him keeping to himself and not sharing such an amazing adventure. Many really intelligent individuals lack people skills, and the ability to connect well with a general audience. He was obviously a bit nervous. The footage was "courtesy of the Discovery Channel." So he probably has some kind of public appearances and promotions contract associated with that.
@@UpcycleElectronics I don't mind less good public speaking (although of course it is better if it is there) and I've seen plenty of those talks that I still liked. However, in this style of completely rehearsed interview style it is quite annoying and just makes it worse. He already uses a slide show, just put the questions on there and let him read them himself.
Yeah, sorry. I did my best under a very short time to prepare and under the constraints of the format they provided. I tried my best to make it interesting.

That is so funny you say that. Actually, on our dives we take down Styrofoam cups that we draw designs on and the water crushes them to about half their size. I totally agree . . which is one of the big reasons we started off on this adventure. We really had no idea what we might find.
@@victorvescovo5773 there might be unknown species down there that can help the human race cure diseases with their genetics. My uncle just died from ALS and doctors weren't much help to him. Who knows, maybe you'll find a new species, like that awesome jelly you found, that can significantly help us. I feel like all the genetics answers we need to solve our most "incurable" diseases are in the species that are all around us. We just need to make sure we don't kill off those species before we can solve these problems. Good luck to you Victor, keep up the good work!

I wonder if they will ever release the raw footage of the outside camera dives. The ocean terrifies me, but I love learning about it and I never thought it would be possible to see the bottom of the Mariana Trench. The Discovery channel didn't sate my thirst for seeing video of the ocean's bottom. It was still nice to see what little I was able. Honestly I think this man is one of my new heroes...

I hope Victor Vescovo will discover really something new and incredible that we never seen before. Ocean is so mysterious in the bottom.
Really didn’t know the Atlantic Bottom has never been explored! Pretty cool 😎 ♥️
Most of the ocean is still a mystery due to our technology and that's why less people visited the Mariana Trench than the Moon.
Definitely cool! This video is a little misleading though. The DSV Alvin has been diving to the bottom of the ocean before this dude was born. He should have been clearer that he has been to a deeper part than previously explored. Still most of the ocean is unexplored, which is craziness!

This is so fascinating - thank you for sharing your work, Victor! I'm looking forward to hearing more about these dives. One of the subjects I teach on in some of my science classes is the bottom of the ocean, but it's really hard to teach a subject that we know so little about. While I appreciate the work Elon is doing, this, to me, is so much more important and it's not comparable.

Neil Sangte I’m pretty sure he Said 60,000
“Pressure per square inch” If I’m not mistaken
RandomRoulette :’(
Yeah, I flubbed that a little. I meant to be clear and say "16,000 pounds per square inch." It is the equivalent to the weight of three Nimitz-class aircraft carriers sitting on top of the entire sub (if it was in a tub of water that the carriers were sitting on). It is a crazy amount of pressure. It was very difficult to engineer all the systems that could handle that pressure, and still work normally on the surface.
@@victorvescovo5773 I really appreciate you taking the time to clear this up.

When is the documentary being released? I've been waiting to see this deep sea footage.
He should hire someone to run social media pages for him. They could post the new species whenever they dive and they'll probably get a decent following. That would help him spread his name and possibly even get funding for further projects... maybe?
