      @@Peterski Ah, thanks. One of my grandmothers came from a village in Poland that has Dąb in its name. Her brother gave it as Dembe in his naturalization application, which was an important clue to where it was. I obviously haven't learned any parts of speech very well. Theirs was a German village in Russian-ruled Poland, probably one of the Olęnder villages. An uncle of my grandmother served in the Russian cavalry and learned to write in Russian, and probably to speak it, too. Whether he was a willing/unwilling conscript or what, I have no idea. They all came to the U.S. before WWI, which was a good thing, seeing how Russia treats its soldiers. And there was some action near their village during the Polish-Soviet war that followed. Germans and Russians seem to have had trouble learning how to make themselves welcome in neighboring countries, but these connections give me an excuse to visit. On the last day of a week in Poland a few years ago I told my wife we should never come back, because it can't get any better than this and anything else would have to be a let-down. But I've been wanting to go back anyway.

My mother’s mother’s brother was one of those wacky but incredibly brave Polish officers that attacked German tanks on horseback! My mother remembered as a child being terrified as the Germans searched her family’s property looking for him. (He was hiding in the barn at some point). Mr. Dębski's mention of revanchism is a very important point. Beating Russia on the battlefield is not the end of the war, it's just the end of one chapter of it, and the beginning of a whole new struggle to secure stability and peace in the future. Revanchism in a society of a defeated country was ignored once in the past, and it became a fertile ground for the birth of another totalitarian, aggressive regime that ultimately brought yet another World War into existence. It was Germany after WWI, and the society that bought the propaganda of a new movement that NSDAP was. We need to not make the same mistake again and allow the revanchism to grow, fester and rot among Russians, or it will ricochet and hit us in the face just like it did before in the XXth century. I'm not saying that we should turn a blind eye to any crimes and violations and the perpetrators thereof. On the contrary. The democratic world should show consistence, integrity and do not let anyone get away with criminal behaviour. But the ordinary people should not be left in the lurch by the decision makers stemming from democratic countries, or else they will never put trust in democracy to begin with.

    I'm convinced that Scholz was pissed that Zelensky chose to fight back and forced Germany to get off the gas gravy train . That's why he was so slow with help, and his few meetings with Zelensky are so obviously not warm the way other leaders hug and smile, etc. The words coming out of Germany in February 2022 were "it's not our conflict".
    I saw a quote from Scholz along the lines that it would be "a great tragedy if Ukraine fell " but we can't do much about it. Everything that is said in this podcast is 100 percent right , we Poles saw it coming and we also saw how some countries were more than willing to sacrifice Ukrainians for their own interests, ignoring the fact that they were making deals with the devil. And when the refugees came, there was no cash coming from the EU for the longest time, we had to pay for it all ourselves.

  • @OstblockLatina
    @OstblockLatina Před rokem +1

    I must disagree with Dębski on "it's their own business if they want to be authoritarian". Because even if an authoritarianism would only keep itself to the territory of the country it has been formed in, it would still be hurting and oppressing its own citizens. And I'm not OK with it either. Just like I'm not OK with the mindset of people from free, democratic countries spending their holidays in places like UAE, which do all sort of terrible things to its own people, but keep different standards for paying foreigners. If one would go further down that line, it would be comparable to Germans of the 30's and 40's of the XXth century enjoying themselves in swimming pools in Summer resorts built next to concentration and work camps with the hands of people incarcerated their for their sheer ethnicity, orientation or political views.
    On the other hand I can see where he is coming from saying the above. Present Polish government is positioning itself on the side of Ukraine, which I find most commendable, but it's not doing it to promote freedom nor democracy, which it had gone to great lengths to suppress in Poland itself. It is supporting Ukraine, because it knows that if it hadn't, the Polish citizens would cart it out of the Sejm on Wiejska Str. and the President's Palace in wheelbarrows and dump it onto a pile of manure on the outskirts of Warsaw. The policy of Polish Government towards Ukraine is purely utilitarian and self-serving, and the main burden of humanitarian help is carried by the Polish NGOs an volunteers whose please for state support have mostly and broadly been ignored since the beginning of the refugee crisis after the beginning of Russia's full.scale invasion.

    As an American, one of the things about Poland and actually most of the post-Soviet Countries, that I like is that they welcome the US and NATO with open arms. France and Germany hold us more at arms length even though the US spends the most money to keep Europe safe, Poland actually seems to appreciate the defense we will be able to provide if, God forbid, article 5 ever needs to be used in a war situation. And I am glad Poland and the Baltics have been ringing the alarm about Russia forever. I am a Cold War baby and even after the collapse of the Soviet Union, I never trusted them. I have also studied Russian history in depth so I knew that it was only a matter of time. I also saw the Oil/Gas blackmail coming for years. When Germany was going ahead with Nordstream II, I thought 'what the hell are they thinking to give Russia that much power over their energy'! I hope they have learned their lesson finally! Unfortunately present native territories of various nations under the Kremlin government, oficially adressed as Russian Federation, are not 19th and earlier Poland. Poland under occupation and partitions of several of our neighbours was still a land with - apart from several ethnic and national minorities - a pretty unitary nation and culture with very strong identity, culture, language etc. Now, the ethnic non-Russian populations in RF had been to a great extent deculturized, and let's add the fact that partitioned and occupied Poland was not exposed to such treats as i.e. Islamic State, which is presently a serious threat to several territories of RF, should it fall apart. As much as I hate it, should Russian Federation fall apart and be divided into a number of new political and territorial entities, all the militant groups, terrorist organizations, (not to mention opportunistic thugs and new prospective dictators from among their own people) etc. in Asia and in th Middle East will rush to try to bite off chunks of its territory, resources and political power over whichever land and its inhabitants they could violently coerce into submission. And even if and where this won't be the case, the new political entities in place of former RF will face severe challenges on the way of securing itself enough economic independence to back their sovereignty, and most of them, if not all, are going to have to ally or maybe even become autonomous (if they're lucky) territories of their political neighbours. Some of which again have little to nothing in common with things like basic respect to the human rights and elementary dignity of people of different origins, and will probably use every opportunity to drain their new subjects' land of its resources and do all sort of nasty things to their people.
    And in the worst case scenario, those new political entities might just as well proceed to jump at each other's throats in order to establish which scrap of land should belong to whom, and we are going to have another Balkan War, except in Asia.

    Great content Paul with yet another great guest. Very informative, as always.
    The former Soviet Republics know first hand what it's like to live under Russian rule; the majority of their Peoples' don't want that again. There's a significant portion of the Russian population that doesn't support this war, but Russian isn't a Democracy.
    Russia still practices imperialism, and claims if anyone doesn't help is a Nazi or a traitor.
    Putin is a former KGB agent, who holds a grip on domestic power with violence, intimidation.
    Russia has had a successful misinformation/disinformation and it still operating. It's very active on Western social media and it's advanced.
    Assassinations, invasions - Georgia, Crimea etc.. now an attempted full invasion.
    The Kremlin couldn't even take part in the Olympics fairly, with state-sanctioned doping, involving steroids seeing them banned or sanctioned for a period of time. Interesting read.
    He said it best "Russia either wins this war, or they lose"
    There's a significant portion of Russians who don't support this war, but such different opinions aren't tolerated. He's right in saying that it's up to the Russian people, not others to decide their fate but we should those who are attacked.
    NATO its Allies have, and should continue to support Ukraine. Stop the war of imperialism and aggression.
