  • The world's biggest festival of democracy is underway in India. Drama, spectacle, colour, jibes, and exuberant noise-India is witnessing everything. But what about its neighbours? How are they watching the Indian Election 2024? Who do they want in power: a strong independent government or a coalition one? How will the 2024 India General election shape neighbours' foreign policies? We will get all the answers.
Joining this podcast are two esteemed experts, Ajay Bisaria and Tilak Devasher. Bisaria is a Distinguished Fellow at ORF. He served as the Indian High Commissioner to Canada and India's envoy to Pakistan, Poland, and Lithuania. He also authored the book "Anger Management: The Troubled Diplomatic Relationship Between India and Pakistan," which is discussed in the show.
Tilak Devasher is the author of three widely acclaimed books on Pakistan. He retired as Special Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India in October 2014. He is currently a member of the National Security Advisory Board.
In this episode, experts discuss how China is extending its trade ties with Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Myanmar, which pose high-risk points for Indian territories. They further talk about dealing with the Taliban government, terrorism of insurgent groups in Myanmar, and relations with the Pakistan government. And how should India deal with the New Maldivian government, which ran an 'India Out' Campaign.

It is such a refreshing change from those times when a few strategic pundits would monopoloise the debates on foreign policy issues with so called iconic anchors like Karan Thapar. Most of those discussions were structured to give a so called " fair assessent ". Needless to mention criticizing Indian policy makers was par for the course. All of us know about those sanctimonious punditry of the strategic foregin policy experts.

Ajay Bisaria is an example of Old Establishment. For maintaining his access to the glitterati speaks all talking points of interests other than that of India. His views on critical Indian interests have likely damaged India. He speaks the language of pleasing foreign powers.

Question to Mr Tilak : why should kashmir statehood be the determining factor for Talks with Pakistan. They snapped the ties, so why should we give them something in terms of statehood to kashmir. That would send a very wrong message that we were forced to give statehood.
As a kashmiri, statehood should be restored after 30 years of 2019 maybe in 2047.
The years lost in militancy should be taken as time barometer for it being a UT.
Those farooqs and muftis should understand the value of being a responsible "state" like others in India.

    1. About Pakistan- it is simple. First, Pakistan has nothing to do with J&K after Art 370 was abrogated- whether it is a UT or a state. Secondly, we have nothing to do with their elected Govts, as the Army controls everything. So let us NOT get into Aman Ki Asha mode ever again. Until Pakistan Army and ISI stops all anti terror activities against India fully and completely, nothing can happen in our relations Thirdly, India will not trade with Pakistan as any trade with Pakistan means feeding their coffers for terrorist activities, open our borders for drug trade etc. 2. In fact, Modi 3.0 should actively support anti Pak forces in variety of ways like via Taliban, support for POK, Baloch and Sindh movements etc. 3. China is making moves in Shaksgam Valley and is unlikely to change its stance on border with India. This works well for India, as we are building up our defenses and infrastructure on the border. Plus we are close to US and we are getting required defense technologies from US. And yet China is our biggest trading partner!!!! 4. Excellent and refreshing discussions by Tilak and Ajay.
