    What an underrated beauty. There is a lot of slight emotional movement, it is beautifully done.

    Grande concerto romantico che mostra tutti i caratteri del grande Rubinstein.
    Memorabile esecuzione di Banowetz e dell'orchestra Ceca.

    All of Rubinstein's concerti are better than the current frequency of performances and recordings suggest, and this First Concerto is no exception. The strength of this one is shown most in its' finale, from the grave introductory bars introducing the piano's infectious tripping melody, to the impressive magisterial passage at 28:49, through the broad Rachmaninoff-like section at 34:08, to the powerful chords of the coda.

    • @comet8864
      @comet8864 Před 4 lety +2

      No.4 is easily the best. If Liszt, Schumann, Brahms, Saint Saens and Tchaikovsky and Grieg are in a separate league, Rubinstein's no.4 rivals anything else of the second half of the C19th. His competitors - all well worth repeated listening - are Telefsen, Reinecke, Scharwenka, Pierne, Moszkowski and Stenhammar. Others who dabbled a little in the genre most commendably are Henselt, Bache, Berwald, Thuille, Albeniz, Scriabin and Stanford. Rachmaninov didn't come from nowhere!

      Still remembered by the insiders,#4. Hope it will be heard by general audiences a lot again. Natasha Paremski gave it a nice push with BBC3 listeners, mainly, when she did it with the fine Bournemouth orchestra, Kees Bakkel at the helm I think.

    If the rules of thematic development,the building and repetition of ideas and melody are allowed to change from one era to another then this concerto is ok. Those same qualities make the concertos of Chopin, Beethoven and Brahms remain in my head in a way this one never could.

    It’s the same key as Chopin’s concerto. I listened to the first movement except what I heard did not take me along. I remained unmoved throughout. Just is not the piece for me. It’s very rare that I do not take to at least a couple aspects of a piano concerto. PWG

    What an erratic concerto! It should have come in a third shorter. Two thirds of it are great. Three, four and five don't have these problems.
