- This video shows how to replace the return spring on my drill press, however, most should be similar. Also known as a quill spring.

Great! Thanks! Right to the point with no production BS or annoying background music we now inundated with ! Thanks again from Canada 🇨🇦!!
Thanks for the great feedback mate, glad you liked it.
Just what i needed - your comment about the spring firing over the other side of the garage was exactly what i was thinking too.
Also, thanks for the tip on tightening those lock nuts away from the case.
No worries mate, glad it was helpful 👍🏼
I have considered overhauling my old Toolmac drill to use as a mini-mill and have watched several "how to overhaul your drill quill" videos but none show the detail required to put the spring back on. This is the best video by far... Thank you.Aussie Aussie Aussie!
thanks very much Ray, glad it helped.
Thank you so very much!
The instructions made no sense in regards to this section of my drill press. The cover itself is so very tight and I don't like forcing things. But it looks like I may have to to get it to move as I need to adjust the tension.
Thank you again❣️
You're welcome. I so glad that it was helpful. All the best with it 👍🏼
Fixed my company's drill press in ten minutes thanks to your video. Much appreciated.
Awesome, so glad it helped you out mate
Thanks for the upload I’ve been fiddling with mine holding the chuck up in place and wind in the spring the wrong way for about an hour found your video simple to the point and save the day thank you
Awesome, very happy it was helpful for you. Cheers
This was exactly what I needed, thank you! I'm restoring an old press, and wasn't sure if I pulled the cover off what would happen 😂
Glad to hear it mate. I’m happy that this very old video of mine is still helping people 👍🏼
Thank you so very much, I was so distressed not knowing how to fix my drill press, followed your instructions and it is done, thank you!!!!
Awesome, so glad to hear that it helped you out
Thank you very much Mate from North Bay, Ontario Canada.
Perfect video, well produced and allowed me to fix my own drill press with a $5 Quill Spring delivered from China.
You made my day.
+Brian Baker Hey thanks Brian, you made my day knowing my video was helpful and appreciated.
Victor
Cheers dude! I wasn't sure how to re-tension the spring after doing a bearing change
No worries mate, so glad it was able to help you out

Thanks very much, glad it helped.
Thank you for an Excellent Video, I have an old Rockwell HDP 125 drill press 12 inch, and my spring snapped today, so like you I will order one from China, and get it back on the road again. Thanks Again, Good Job, you made it look easy. I love CZcams videos.
Thanks very much Phillip and glad it helped
Thanks from Texas mate. Good tip attaching a clamp to spring housing. I also wear a pair of safety glass around any parts or tools where tension is relieved or applied to springs.
glasses
Thanks mate, glad it was helpful, and yes great tip about the glasses.
thanks for showing how to put in the spring, my spring snapped a week ago, waiting for it to be mailed to me....
My pleasure Jack, happy to help out

Glad to help mate
Thanks a lot for the video and detailed explanation! It will be much easier to repair my drill press.
Great to hear the video will help you out mate. Good luck with it.
Video was so helpful. Changed it out!
Great to hear that Laura.
You can anneal the broken end with a torch and bend a new leaf section to replace the broken end, works just fine. ☺
Thanks for that tip/hack.
Was about to say the same thing - did this with the spring on my recoil (grass trimmer)
@@indidginus Anneal means to heat metal, making it easier to bend.
Very handy video mate.
I think mines on it's way out 👏👌👍🏽
Thanks
I was just working on this today on my own drill press and was a little befuddled as to how to go about it. Thanks for the helpful and short video!
Very glad to have been able to help out Pat.
Thanks, too many other vids hacking a repair that is as simple as it seems.
No problem, glad it was helpful
Looks like very good instrutions.
Thank you, I hope they help
Awesome video, concise and informative! Kudos mate!! 👍👍
Thank you. Glad it was helpful mate
Thanks for the good instructional video. I would add a few drops of oil on the spring before putting in place.
Thanks Barry and thanks for the tip.
Cheers m8, was just wondering how to get it in safely, nice tips :)
No worries mate. Glad I could help
I appreciate the post. You earned another subscriber.
Thanks very much Reggie, and welcome to the channel.
yes thank you. master craft 10" drill press and a snapped spring.. this helped
+Paul Smart So glad I could help Paul.
Thanks for this. I inherited an old Sprunger and I've been wondering what this part was for. On the Sprunger it looks like some sort of dial, I had no idea there was a return spring in there.
No worries mate, glad to help.
Great Video, Thanks, my mill quill spring has gone so I have an idea what I am doing now. It takes 3 to 4 weeks for ebay purchases to reach the uk too. I found that if I buy from Hong Kong it only takes a couple of weeks.
+Robert Scratchet Hey thanks Robert, hope it all goes well.
Thank you! And... I'm off to fix my drill press...
Great video!
Thanks. Glad it was helpful Lishai.
It should be mentioned that if the spring is hooked onto a slot on the perimeter of the shell, yes you can put it in backwards. That would be bad.
True. It would pay to take note of how the original is installed and just put the new one in the same way.
My spring came out of the housing when I was making a repair. No I’m trying to get it back into the housing which is proving to be an impossible task. I might just need to buy a new spring that is wrapped tight like yours.
That will definitely help. Good luck with it
Thanks! Great video- just what I needed to answer my question.
Glad it was helpful Nicholas.

No worries Marcus, glad it helps.
Thank you from Cornwall England
No worries Sidney, glad it helped.
Good job. Thanks for the great explanation 👍
Thanks Robert, glad you liked it.
Thanks. Just the information i needed.
No worries. Glad it helped.
I can't seem to find the exact size I need. Are any of the measurements crucial, or can it be 6mm wide instead of 7, for instance. It's a 40 year old machine. Thanks if you can help.
Hey Herb, i think the only limitation is the depth of the cover piece. if you're replacing a 7mm with a 6mm i don't see any issuer with that. you would have an issue if the new spring was wider and stopping the cover piece from seating properly. Hope that helps.
Very helpful, thank you.
No worries Mark, glad to hear it.
Yes great just need to get a spring then i can get my drill sorted
Thank you very much for your comment Ron. Apologies for the late reply but I'm trying to clear my "Comments I haven't responded to" list.
Nicely done, don't have this problem now but likely will at some point. Thank you :-)
Thanks very much Glenn.
Wow I just got the same drill press 2nd hand. And this was the only thing wrong with it
How good is that mate. Sounds like a great score then
Great tutorial!
Thanks Randy.
Great video, thanks for sharing.👍👍
No worries, glad you liked it Gil.

Thank you
Thanks you
No problem Antonio, my pleasure
Spettacolare , grazie!
Thank you Henri
A very helpful video thanks. :)
.
Hi, Do you have a link to where you purchased this quill spring? I have the exact same drill press with the exact same fault. Thanks Daniel
Sorry Daniel, i don't but there are many of these available on eBay. Just get the right size quill.
That worked well.
Unfortunately, the spring I was sent fits perfectly in the housing, except for the bent tab that locates in the housing, so it wont slid in.
Rats!
That means I'll have to buy another.
Damn, don't you just hate that. Good luck with the new one mate.
Yesterday, I was using the drill, with a speed bit, and the spring housing and nuts screwed on to act as a friction damper.
Wound the chuck up to the top position, went to remove the workpiece, and the chuck and bit suddenly descended onto my finger.
If I'd just kept my fingers still, I'd just have had a puncture, as it was, I instinctively removed my hand, and the puncture became a gash from knuckle to knuckle on my middle finger, nearly down to the bone.
Yes, its damn sore!
Hobbies are such great fun!
PS, Where in Oz are you located?
Ouch, sorry to hear that mate. I'm in Sydney.
The irony, is that I normally wear gloves to work with, but had taken them off to do some fine marking out, and then the gremlins struck!
My son was in Sydney a couple of years back, for 18 months, sort of working holiday.
He hoped to get sponsored, but the construction industry took a downturn, with all the CO2 crap, and that all fell apart.
He may end up in the South of France instead. :-)
Different language, which frightens him a bit.
His partner, is there with her mother, awaiting their firstborn, so it can be registered as French.
The nearest I got was Singapore. My mate and I were intending to ship ourselves and a couple of motor bikes to Queensland, bike down to Melbourne, and then ship back. [in the 60's] but the shipping company wanted more to ship us, than we intended to spend on the whole trip. So, that idea died. Even then I could see how China was developing, and how it would dominate the area eventually. Cheers.
I cut off that "bent tab" (thank you Dremel tool for having a tiny grinding wheel...the spring was partially in the holder when I cut it off. Then, I pounded the spring in all the way, put some oil in there, and it works fine.
Thank you!
No problem. Cheers mate
Anyone know where I could find a spring for a Chrisman drill press model number 34983
all i can suggest mate is eBay. It doesn't have to be a branded replacement, just measure the spring you have and buy one the same
Where are you from sir?
Sydney, Australia.
Thanks, but please tell everyone to fit it the right way around, notice when you take the old one out
As many design will only have a slot, so very easy to fit the wrong way
True Heiner, but a bit late for me to do that now. You would quickly realise it though
Loose the ring. Its gay!
Is the ring gay or is losing it gay? Do you have a problem with gay people? Homophobia is a weakness and an insecurity.
Excellent, now I know how, Thinks! Dave WRØX
Thank you Dave, my pleasure. Im glad this video is still helpful to viewers
Thank you! Very helpful.
Glad to be able to help Karin.
