Travis Knight has said he made the decision to make the G1 style designs because he was a big fan of Transformers since his childhood. He read the comics, he watched the series, he had many figures. So when he accepted to make this film he wanted to do it in such a way that it was a good adaptation, that he would evoke the Transformers of his childhood, besides he as a specialist of the animation has a lot of knowledge of the theory of forms and visual narrative. He gave classes to the film designers explaining that to make a character more expressive it is not made more overdetailed and saturated, but it must be simplified, apply more color and fix the attention on the aspects that matter, like the eyes. So the G1 designs benefit these aspects because they are simpler, they make each character more distinguishable, that also helps when filming the action. And they are also more suitable designs for each character, express more personality.

It also helps with having only a set number of Transformers in a live action film. You can have more in the cartoon because well it's easy to pull off. Even in the comics it's easy to pull off.

I'm still thinking that the film was designed to be a reboot if it does well at the box office and if it flops then they can lump it in with the Bay films and start over in a couple years, it will be such an isolated story that it can go either way. Which is why they keep tip-toeing around the topic and not giving us a clear answer.

Not to mention it would just make more sense both financially and narrative wise that this would end up a reboot down the line. I view the Bumblebee movie, not as a complete reboot, but rather, an alternate time-line.
But, instead of a "normal-universe" discovers a cross-over to a chaotic one, I think we started with the 'Bayverse', as the chaotic time-line that was never-intended-to-be, ("Remember Chicago")
and the Bumblebee movie as the result of something changed in the time-line.
Time-travel HAS been used already in the G1 cartoon,The Arialbot, as Earth-jets, went back in time to save Orion Pax.
Maybe the answer is just that simple. Someone went back in time, before the war, and introduced "Color".(LOL)
And, an alternate time-line was used in the G1 (Marvel) comics.
(issue 67-70 Put Galvatron and Megatron in the same place and time to fight himself/each other..) anyway...
Bumblebee (in the 80s) may be shown scenes from a "possible future" (2010 Bayverse), and told:
"This future must be avoided At All Costs!!" therefore, … the events of this universe, eliminate the Bayverse time-line, instead.

I honestly just can't see this going any other way than a reboot. The 5th movie messed up the continuity so bad on it's own as well as was just a very dysfunctional movie overall, it just doesn't feel like this Bumblebee should be anywhere near that timeline. Especially since it's such a perfect fresh start. I know there has been a lot of speculation over if it's a reboot or not, since it does contain elements from the Bay films, as well as people working on the movie stating it's a prequel, but other sources saying if it does well they will either full on reboot it or just have a softcore reboot. It's most probable that the studio just wants this to be a seen as a prequel just in case it doesn't do well and confirm it as a new Universe if it does well. Either way at this point it would make more sense both financially, and continuity wise for this to be a reboot. I think if it had a bit more space in years from the release of the Last Knight, more audiences would be able to discern this as it's own thing rather than the same timeline, but at the same time Transformers fans really needed some sort of reassurance after the Last Knight atrocity.

Can't wait to see how the sequel's (if we get any) to this prequel gradually work their way up to the 2007 live action introduction. Only disagreement is Blitzwing. Liked his design, but like many others, I initially thought it was Starscream. Hope to see him come back as a tripolar triple changer with an additional tank alt mode. Good vid overall my dude.

The Bumblebee Movie is a Prequel to the 2007 Transformers Movie Directed by Michael Bay.
Which means Bumblebee can't get a reboot because it is in the same universe that was established by Michael Bay.
Here is a good example the Spider-Man movies were directed by Sam Raimi the last movie Spider-Man 3 was in 2007.
Marc Webb was the director for the rebooted Spider-Man movie called
The Amazing Spider-Man it is a reboot because The Amazing Spider-Man has nothing to do with the Sam Raimi directed Spider-Man movies it's a separate universe.

According to a visual dictionary type of book I read a few years ago, the protoforms are basically their skeletons, and the transformers would have to shed their armor (their vehicle mode kibble) in order to transform into their meteor mode. Megatron already had a vehicle mode that was capable of space travel, so he didn’t have to shed his exoskeleton. Shockwave and Soundwave could have trans-scanned a Cybertronian tank/satellite respectively before coming to Earth.

If I gotta be honest I think they're trying too hard to win people back with this move. I know they're trying to give us something different for the movie franchise lately but it feels like they're just trading in one form of stagnation with only a different brand which is rehashing G1 for the 50th time. The G1 nostalgia train has been going on for 12 years now and I'm worried Hasbro's going too far with it. Not to mention that there are ways of making generic looking robots and places that don't involve being black and grey all over. Just ask G1. Again it just feels like they're trading in one extreme for another as opposed to finding a middle ground.

They've almost completely changed the loose timeline established in the previous movies, more notably the times that Bee and the big bot arrived on Earth, and while there is a a brief cameo of sorts from a younger version of a certain S7 agent present in previous movies, the whole of S7 seem to be in amazement at these new visitors, which makes me think they didn't find the Allspark in the early 20th Century, and never recovered N.B.E.-01 in the 1930s.

I think the live-action continuity for this movie should be the start of a new live-action continuity in general. Sure, it can be part of the same mythos as the Michael bay films, but it can be a more diverse and better explored one. We see a similar thing with Transformers: War for Cybertron, Fall of Cybertron, Transformers: Prime, and Transformers: RID 2015. They are part of the 'Aligned Continuity' that is fleshed out in detail by the Aligned Continuity Covenant of Primus. All of them are connected loosely.
This would be a good way to soft reboot the live-action films, while still keeping some connection. This would allow for a reason to change the character designs, lore, and story altogether. :)
