- How does Adam Savage keep his head on straight when an entire production is depending on him? What was Adam's most artistically challenging film, and what does he think has been the most important technical innovation in filmmaking in recent years? In this live stream excerpt Adam answers these questions from Tested members @josieMayday, @Mooncake and @ianrigby7395, whom we thank for their support! My axiom is: "Always care, but never worry." With the corollary: "Expect the worst, that way you only have pleasant surprises."
Plan for the worst, hope for the best, be mindful of where and how things can go wrong, and work to mitigate.
I feel like this is a better way of putting it. I really sounds like Adam is suggesting anxiety is the only way to success when what I think he is describing is worry as a non-emotional state. Being mindful and prepared is not the same thing as being anxious.
In a previous video Adam stated Jamie is unflappable because he lives in the moment, with the implication he thinks in terms of solutions instead of problems. Of course that wouldn't work if he wasn't also extremely detail oriented.
"Expect the worst, hope for the best." Right? I'm not sure why so many people try to fight me on that, as though "expecting the worst" could be a bad thing...?
And when you look up the joke where "your turn in the barrel" comes from, get ready for how it dovetails with your perspective.
Adam is that guy that speaks about nothing related to you job or life but give you great advice & knowledge thatbe applied to literally anything.
They say that if you are not the lead dog the view never changes, but the truth is that when you are the lead dog all you can see is all of the things that should have been done differently.
this is why good leadership is important, you can choose to say “i see this flaw, we must fix it to improve” or you can say “reality must be wrong for i am flawless, ignored!” and destroy your potential and your teams potential! we need an org like DWB but leaders without egos haha
"Worrying is the water that you swim in,"
Whoooo, brother, ain't that the truth. Anticipation and communication... it *will* go wrong and you *will* have to think on the fly, and that's okay. :)
I just googled "Your turn in the barrel" and I am _not_ surprised that you wouldn't explain it!
He should have added "and Google it 😅
Some aspire to greatness, others find it thrust upon them. I'd rather be able to assemble a great crew than I'd want to be the strongest man in that crew. Great advice, Adam. Always welcome.
Managing this type of "worry" is one key to succeeding in aviation. It can be tough, as there are many stereotypical "no big deal" personalities in the mix, and, admittedly, the worry can be overdone, but prep, preflight, and a steady re-evaluation of the situation can save the day.
One of the things that I found when you’re In a leadership position. Give ownership to everyone having a central message that everyone owns what is going on. The product will reflect who we are and how we made it happen.
My moment in the Barrel
Years ago, here in Canada I worked as a tow truck operator. On one bright and sunny Saturday afternoon this person had somehow managed to hit a snow bank in such a way as to completely flip the car upside down in the middle of the icy road without any visible damage to the car. When I arrived on scene there was an enormous audience consisting of fireman, police officers, paramedics and hundreds of onlookers as it was a gorgeous day to be outside. I was given my charge to flip and remove the car with great skepticism that it could be done quickly because the road was so icy, and the car was expected to just slide around on its roof like a hockey puck. I however was well prepared for this task using a custom cut piece of hardwood I had made, my J-hooks and winch. I quickly went to work setting of the leveraged pull and brought the car gently over on the first try. I was quickly rewarded by loud applause by all initiated by the Fire Chief of the city!
from a fellow operator, well done. also as a fellow operator I know excatly how you did it 😉
I saw someone tell a story about the film "Poltergeist" and the kitchen scene where all the chairs get stacked on the table in the moment a character has their back turned, and it was done the same way with a gang furiously moving the chairs just out of frame.
and it took 17 times to get that shot correct. What a day
I just hope I have a similar outlook and way of moving through life as Adam as I age. What an inspiration
I love all Adam Savage's Tested videos.
Congratulations to @JosieMayday for wrapping on your first film as Set/Props Designer/Fabricator.
👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎
Work like yours and Adams' is part of the reason credit lists are as long on TV and cinema productions.
😃😃😃😃
Your anvil fell?? Check for a coyote. ;)
LED volumes are enabling so much incredible stuff to be made, it's been wild what I've been able to accomplish with the relatively tiny one my employer has. And it's only going to get more amazing as this tools and pipeline get refined!
The most incredible thing about film 🎥 is the evolution of movie making from movie making in the early 20th century to the digital artistic movies we have today.
Love the title of this vid! I like the phrase, "Worrying is borrowing trouble from the future."
"Potentially dangerous objects" - Can't wait for the announcement of the project!
So delighted to have found you here, and the vast tracks of content! You, sir, will be my daily companion for the foreseeable future.
" I will not explain that". 🙌
I've heard the joke but didn't realize it was a major reference point in Hollywood. Kinda shocking, but maybe it shouldn't be a surprise?
ADAM -- You might wish to also explain the proverbial 'Bottle Shows' in episodic TV ... and how it makes the cast and crew internally and externally scramble for the sake of the 'budgie.'
Thanks for keeping at it, amigo.
A friend of some friends of the old ILM days on Kerner,
D.A.
I used to be a location sound mixer and video assist operator. I never slept when I had a job. I constantly worried about the million things that could go wrong. We had back-ups for everything. Multiple alarm clocks, multiples of every machine, connectors, cables, microphones, adaptors... it never ends. And I was still constantly stressed. I'll never forget shooting a parade a Magic Kingdom where the entire production came to a halt because of me and a machine not working. It was literally the worst day of my professional life.
This was me last year, running my first crew as a Production Manager. Seven people looked to you for leadership, and the director asked for things at the last second. Those were my worries. Luckily, pre-production planning and communication are what really helped to keep things aligned. That and holding part of the budget back ultimately saved the day. But boy, did I sweat the details beforehand.
Best tech innovation. Non-linear editing.
interesting that you put worrying in a sort of positive light. it'sengrained in my personality and I do everything I can to get rid of it. but job context is not the same as personal struggle I guess.
I just have been told, that I'll be between jobs in 2 months. I'm looking forward to and am grateful for the motivation- & psy.al support your wise words of this format of yours already do&will provide in this new upcoming transformation time of mine. thx very much Mr. Savage - plz *KEEPonROCKING*
The moment you feel like you don't need to worry anymore, is when your reminded why you needed to be worried.
Sounds like my life in academia.
Thank you so much!!!!!
As long as you were discussing X-Files, did Vince Gilligan ever tell you why Mulder always dropped his gun? Monster jumps on Mulder, Mulder drops his gun, regular as clockwork. It got to the point where I started wondering why Mulder even bothered carrying it in the first place.
And THAT is exactly why I retired from effects work (mostly serving the ad industry).
After 25 years, it nearly killed me.
So now I work for myself making art.
did you change the title like 3 times?
Worry vs concern. I'm concerned all the time.
I'm not really "worried"...
that is I'm not worried that something will "utterly fail', but rather I know (from experience) that no matter what, there is a way to handle problems that arise.
love this. thank uuuu
"I will not explain that" 😂
The changing sets while in an elevator also happened on the newer Star Trek films. We see Spock enter the Turbolift on pne deck, see the movement by the lights and walks onto the bridge.
That was not a set changing action; it was a blue screen effect. He was always on the bridge. The initial shot is a blue screened shot of a different area of the ship.
Been there, done that, worry-wise. I had to build a Flux Capacitor for a "Back To The Future" themed school fundraiser auction. As the deadline approached I found things I should have thought about, or ordered, earlier. Thank God for Amazon. Also, spending too much early time (Arduino coding to control the lights) instead of on the physical build. It all turned out OK (sold for $425!) but - whew - I kept saying "If I only had more time!".
That abject terror is something I feel deep in my bones, we developers have a saying (although it applied to fields other than programming); “testing can show the presence of bugs, but not their absence”
We as makers can do all the testing in the world but we never know if our work is mistaken free until we release it into the world
When certain aspects of a production become easier or faster as a result of technological progress, more pressure is placed upon the rest of the production to keep up.
I've got a somewhat lengthy question regarding one of the episodes that I don't want to type out during a live stream, so I'll post it here:
Well first of course I'm a huge fan of Mythbusters and had watched it pretty much from the start before you guys got your own dedicated show. My favorite segment was the golf ball pits car. I love it when the seemingly ridiculous turns out to be a strong demonstration of physics at work. Anyway, on to the question:
The only episode that I had to take some issue with scientifically was when you guys tried to set up ways to fool a K9 tracking unit. Right away I realized this might be a conflict of interest because why would the police openly participate in a show that would potentially expose weaknesses and exploits that could in fact work? For example, the fish being dumped on the trail actually did work, and the only reason the cop doubled back is because they knew when the end of the course run was. In real life, it's not a known course, and they would have to be psychic to know which direction to turn next once the dog got distracted. Secondly, the attempt to fool the K9 unit by crossing a body of water was also not very scientific. I have heard of real life examples where the K9 units lost the scent of the suspect after they fled across a river and swam UNDERNEATH the surface of the water. In one case, the suspect even managed to dodge a thermal camera on a helicopter doing this in the woods near a creek. In your show, at no point was a completely submerged swim attempted (fully across and down river at an angle) to fool the unit. Again, there would be little reason for the police to even do the show unless they knew they were safe from any weak points being openly exposed on the show.
I totally get that I might be guilty of tinfoil hat stuff here, but as a scientist, I felt that episode was just bogus. Huge fan otherwise!
Where can I watch the full videos? These clips appear in my feed but I can't find anywhere to watch the full videos. (I don't care about watching them live, but I'd like to see the full videos.)
The best teams I have ever led are those where everyone on the team worries about the project as much as I do. That's rare!
I love all those videos
Constantly worrying about missing something is the first indication that your ego haven't gone to your head.
While tiring, it should be seen as a positive thing to still go through.
Great video sir
Now everyone is going to be guessing what he's building is. Clue one: He's build it dozens of times on Mythbusters.
The first thing that comes to mind is some kind of explosive device.
Promise 95% and deliver 110% and you will thrive.
So much relies upon muscle memory, with the most important being your brain and its ability to process plans and translate thought into reality. Such reality encompasses a flexible ratio of 75% theory : 25% practical - both elements contributing heavily toward your ever expanding toolkit/skillset.
I looked up "in the barrel"... now I know why he didn't want to explain it. lol
7:00 If you had the room, you could have the two sets kitty corner and put the elevator on a "Copperfield" turntable.
I call it being “professionally paranoid”. I’m a touring musician running an Ableton live rig with 5 MIDI controllers. My job is to worry - the “paranoid” part - about everything working correctly on stage every night, but not worry so much that I can’t perform - the “professional” part.
Being in the barrel, first time I heard that and a very interesting insight.....
Don't Google it...😬🤣
@@warofwrath haha just did....
Coincidentally, I recently heard the barrel joke for the first time, so I understood that reference! I shan't explain it
Great advice Under promise over deliver just not too much or they will think your sand bagging to get praise
It's been my experience as a project's "Chief Worrier" that while occupying that "office", I was also the group's biggest pain in their backsides. But, that's the way it goes.
8:34 Dude just ripped one 😅
I believe the X-Files episode he's talking about is Season 6, Episode 3, "Triangle." For anyone looking to give it a (re)watch.
There's a video on CZcams of the elevator scene Adam references (at least, I think it's the one he's talking about, around 24 minutes into the episode) called "{X-Files} Scully kisses Skinner." From the elevator doors closing to opening again is _8 seconds_ by my watch.
Ah good, the worries are over. It’s finished! ….Oh no! I hope they like it!
I just realized the fullscreen title is different from the video title. And the upload says "8 hours ago" but the uploader comment says "1 day ago". What the hell?
If you've performed a certain task repeatedly in the past and filmed your methodical process, you should be able to check each step of the current iteration and work out if you have missed any element.
It sounds like you're describing combat. "All plans go out the window when the first shot is fired." Scary.
Under promising, the overestimation time of Scotties miracles.
"In the barrel"? There are only two I can think of, the one you shoot fish in and you're the fish and the other is the one you go over Niagara Falls in. Am I right?
From what little research i did...
It comes from a joke from old time military. Pretty much a barrel with a "gratification" hole aboard a ship that's out to sea.
Meaning when it's your turn in that barrel... others are waiting to use it on the outside...
I'm trying my hardest to make this pg so sorry if it sounds dumb...
The X-Files episode mentioned is the Triangle, Season 6 Episode 3.
"Commerce and Creativity" sounds like a lost Jane Austen novel.
Hoping for a Bobby Fingers collab
Memories of standing on one side of the street painting huge letters on a store front window while the film crew is filming 5 feet behind me, knowing that if I take one step to many backwards I will ruin the shot …
“It’s your turn on the barrel.” Sounds like a military jargon… or is it?! Would love to know. 😅
Googled it and now I know. LMAO 😂
Anyone able to identify the X-Files episode that's praised so highly by Adam? Thanks in advance!
I looked up in the barrel, and now I understand why Adam didn't explain the origins of this phrase lol
Years ago a supervisor of mine explained in the barrel in 2 ways 1 was they put Nelson in a barrel of Brandy on the way back it got drunk hence brandy is could Nelsons Blood I will not give the other one
👍👍
7:19 lol
The idea that people are giving less money to successful shows is nearly criminal.
Being "in the barrel" is my default state of being at work. I am a field service engineer. I don't get called in until it's an emergency, and hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars are at stake. And i have to sit there and try to fix whatever is broken, usually with bad to no information up front, and minimal support from anyone.
And sometimes the answer is "i cannot help you." And it sucks to have to say that, but it's true often enough to become a callus. And every time, it sucks, but you can't lie about this stuff, you can either fix it or you can't. And it's not about you, usually, it's about proper information up front, and parts availability.
Long story short, if you can't take the stress, find another job. It sucks, but stress is part of certain jobs, and if you can't deal with it in a healthy fashion, you need to find a job where that stress doesn't exist. All jobs have stress, but the severity is wildly variable. Find what you can tolerate, and do that.
Thank you Urban Dictionary. 😬
my bet is that he's making an explosive for slowmo guys
Weirdly, I don't think I need the barrel thing explained.
I'd love to ask Vince Gilligan about X-Files. That one isn't the best episode imo though.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Your turn in the barrel. I haven't heard that in a long time.
ok but letting worry entirely run your thought process is just an anxiety disorder
moderation in all things
In the barrel has become a very unfortunate phrase on sets with guns.
That old “Turn in the Barrel” phrase should probably be phased out nowadays. 😬
Could always be like the new Dune, a budget and you have to make Two complete films that do well and then later you can make the third in the Series if they do well. lol
Duct tape and insect repellant. Those will save you from all sorts of unknown unknowns.
I wonder if all Presidents should/did spend time in that Barrel ?
Worrying is like the wanting. It’s the wanting…
Thought it was James gunn
"Subsequent seasons"
Yeah, anyone hear about the budget issues with the 3rd season of Foundation?
Pity about Apple, the Trillion dollar company having issues with that once in a lifetime production........
I know Favreau might have brought along some changes in production technology, which have led to people being able to broaden the scope of possibility but he's also overseen a period of unsustainability in the industry.
It's been a race to the bottom for the last 10 years and those of us in the industry have seen a demoralising unbalance play out.
Budgets get higher, yet VFX houses get paid less, with more staff. The sums don't add up and now it feels like the wheels are falling off for thousands of technically skilled people.
Why do people always prepend/append qualifiers like "late-stage" or "crony" to 'capitalism'?
Your high praise for Disney is quite hilarious. They are on a different planet from the audience that made them fortunes. Financially imploding on consistent film failure.
I miss the show X-Files
shocked all companies expect to pay less for double results:(
Think twice cut once... ;-)
Wan 01
Yes, if you know the joke you'll know why Adam will not explain the barrel.
That's just showing off. No one would have cared if they cut to closeup before the door re-opened.
Meh. If you can get away with the cost. Why not.
Am I the only one who can't bear any of the nose slice stories? I never have any idea what point you've made with the story because I have to go past the story and pick up at a later point in the video.
