Damn, I wished I found this video sooner. The cigarette door on mine wont close anymore and II thought I had to replace the whole center console. Now I can finally replace it, thank you so much.

I have a 00 540i and my cigarette door has stayed open for well over a year. I can't figure out how to fix it and if I need to buy a new one or not. How did you solve it?

Great DIY, thanks a lot! very helpful. Although I didn´t replace the old tray with a new one; I repainted the old with a kind of "effect vinyl" spray paint (I suppose it´s similar to "Plastidip"). The finish and touch is very similar to the original tray, I´ll see the long term durability.

Hi. I recently bought an e39 520i and i have a problem with the cigarette lighter. The little plastic ring around the socket lights up, so there should be electricity going to the socket, but whatever i plug in, it doesnt work. So electricity goes to the socket, but the socket doesnt work. Fuse is not burnt, have checked and replaced it twice now. (Mine is the same flip up style like yours). Any advice?

The orange light is powered separately from the actual socket. Check the inside of the socket for any corrosion or foreign objects. You can also remove the center console trim to ensure that the the actual socket wire (huge white plastic plug) is plugged into the car's electrical harness (directly below the pop up socket under the center console trim by the gear shifter). I would definitely recommend triple checking that fuse, but it sounds like you have done that already. Make sure there aren't any other blown fuses that could cause that not to work. Good luck!

Is it possible to remove the actual cigarette lighter from its housing? I'm about to put a Dynavin unit in my car and I would like to wire usb & aux thru there.

Anything is possible. You could figure out a way to get USB and aux through that if you're creative enough.

What did you end up using as your rubber mat? Were you able to find any custom fit ones?

killalldude We used just a generic material and cut it to size.

Helped a lot, thanks, actually I didn't do any replacements, I simply had to fix the fucking cigarette lighter opening mechanism cuz it was stuck and I have to admit it took me like 2 hours the whole thing :D
