This 1-MINUTE DOOR FIX Can Solve RATTLING DOORS!! (#1 Door Strike Plate Trick)
Rattling, banging, loose doors are a major headache. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show you the absolute EASIEST repair for doors. It only takes one minute!
Strike plates are the little pieces of metal hardware that sit on your door jamb and give the door handle latch something to fall securely into.
BUT, strike plates often have empty space around the latch, which allow the door to bang or rattle when acted upon by pressure changes in the air in the house.
Many people don't realize, but most door strike plates are ADJUSTABLE. They have a tang, or tongue, perpendicular to the body of the strike plate, which can be bent with a pair of pliers, or possibly an adjustable wrench.
By bending this tongue forwards, the latch will have less room to move around inside the strike plate, thus keeping your door secure. Now your rattling, banging, loose door problems are solved!
Thanks for watching!
The Honest Carpenter - Jak na to + styl
A 3:50 long video that fixed a 6 year old issues, thank you!
THANK YOU! I've been annoyed forever with door rattle, yet never thought of this! Today, I'm going to fix the 6 doors in my house, and I can't wait!
YES!
As a trim carpenter, this has always been one of my biggest pet peeves. Some are made with a slot in that tongue which makes it even easier, as you don't even have to remove it. All you need is a flat head screw driver. I have found that typically in new construction, they are so far off that I have to mortise it back further. It is annoying to have to do that, but I can't have a rattling door. Good video.
Thanks, Lee! I love hearing from other carpenters. You’re right-the tab only has so much effective travel, and sometimes you have to go with a remount. I’ve even seen a lot of pre-hung doors like that, which is just crazy!
You could always do what the workers did in the manufactured home when the doors were out of adjustment. Believe it or not they took small strips of carpet and stapled it to either the door jam or the edge of the door to keep it from rattling.
Did the same thing when the doors were hung wrong and the hinge side of the door may have a 1/4” gap between door and jam. But the hinge side got a 3/8”-1/2” gap where you can see sunlight shinning through the crack when the door shut. They stapled stripes of carpet on a jam to keep the sun from shining through.
I got a bigger surprise when I pulled up the carpet on the floors to put down hardwood flooring. The jerks stapled down the straps off of the boxes from packing boxes to the underlayment before laying down the carpet so they didn’t have to throw their garbage away. Throughout the whole manufactured home I found that nylon box strapping stapled to the underlayment with long 2 1/2” staples no less! Never know it was there though, long as you never replace your carpet!
Won’t even go into the major electrical issues I found, other then saying I found a bare ground wire that was hot and it wasn’t from a short either!
@@ghostridergale Yeah, people who don't know what they're doing do things that show how they don't know what they're doing.
@@TheHonestCarpenter Absolutely! Yeah it's the production assembly line mentality! End result is poor quality!
Came back to make this very comment. Didn't even know about the striker tab this morning ... when I went to adjust an exterior door just now, I noticed the slot. I thought, hmm ... I wonder if I can simply use a flathead screwdriver to pull it out. Yep! No need to remove the striker.
I think it should be noted, don't get too aggressive with that angle or some doors won't close properly or may even pop open if the latch doesn't seat all the way
Last night my daughter's door rattled all night. I Google how to fix a shaking door. This video pop up and was a God send! I grabbed my power screw driver and pliers. Fix it in 5 minutes!
Some of the old style bottle cap openers can hook on to that tongue and provide enough prying leverage to eliminate the need to remove the strike plate. Also- this fix is not permanent as that tab will eventually "bend back" with repeated use of the door, so you will likely need to revisit the issue occasionally. I kept bending the tab on my front door strike plate; but because it's a heavy door-within a month or so the tab would "loosen up" again. Eventually I drove a screw in to the door jam so that when the strike plate is reinstalled-the head of the screw supports the tab so it can't bend back in towards the door casing.
A simple fix that I’ve never thought of. Ethan James keeps blessing the world with practical solutions to perplexing problems, over and over, year after year. Honesty is confirming.
YES! Thanks, Ethan! I had 2 doors that needed this fix!
Great tip, Ethan. Sometimes the smallest adjustment makes a big difference. 👍
Very true, Ben! Thanks for watching 😄
That’s not what she said! 😂
You sir are the Obi-Wan of carpenters! Thank you!👍🏼😎
Great tip! Also use in conjunction with felt pads on the door jamb, especially when the jamb & door go out of alignment and no longer strike along the entire edge. This makes the door sound & feel more of a "thunk" or "thud" instead of a "smack." More expensive feel, IMO.
I've thought about putting some felt pads on my master bedroom door because my wife and I are on opposite shifts. I'm often in bed while she's going to work and she seems to NOT GIVE A SHIT about trying to be quiet! 🤬🤬🤬😂😂😂 the only reason I haven't is that I am afraid closing the door might not be 100%, like it'll bounce open or not latch, etc.
@@szlash280z Sounds as though felt pads are the tip of an unspoken iceberg...If I may be so bold.
YOU JUST SAVED ME 150$ ! Holy poo. Thank you. heart ❤️ 🎉🎉🎉
That is so incredibly helpful! I had no idea what that tongue was for but now I know. Thanks so much for sharing this information.
You’re welcome, John!
Most videos would be 15 minutes long to explain this tip. Love it!
The things one learns from watching the honest carpenter! Thank you
👍😄
Yet another tip I wouldn't have thought of in a million years.
Holy cow! I did not know this and it’s so simple and effective. You “KISS”ed the hell out of this one. Thanks for sharing.
Great advice! Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Love honest humans. Thanks.
Great tip...I've used it many times. The bigger challenge is when you purchase a pre-hung door, and the factory routings won't allow the door to catch...the opposite problem.
Absolute lifesaver. Thank you!
Fabulous info to keep cold out. Sometimes the weatherstripping is not pushed in enough.
I love all the little tips that I wasn't aware of. Thanks!
Simple. Brilliant. Thank you.
Awesome! I had no idea this was a thing! I can fix my daughter's bedroom door now! 🙌🏻
Thanks for sharing!
Great tip. Easy and simple solutions are always better. I had no idea the little metal tab could be used for adjustments. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent tip. Never gave a thought to that piece of metal providing an adjustment point. Thanks tremendously 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great information Ethan! Thanks for the tip!
Thank You
I’ve been working on buildings for nearly 50yrs and never realized that, it was obvious when you pointed it out
Again thank you
OMG that strike plate advice is genius. I have a few doors i will be looking at tomorrow!
NICE! This is incredible knowledge. Thank you for sharing!
That is genius. The minute I saw the photo I thought - no wonder that feature is included and sure enough that's what you pointed it. Sometimes the most obvious things are not realized until someone points them out!
Great easy fix, thanks for sharing.
Wow, that was a great tip. I love knowing how things are designed to work. 👍
Thanks again Ethan, this was perfect timing... didn't know the tongue was adjustable!!
Yes sir, it helped!
Blessings
That’s a great tip . Most folks ( including myself ) think way too complicated when fixing stuff like that .
Wow that’s an amazing simple trick. I was always removing the plate and notched it back to fit better…Thank you James
Awesome quick DIY! Thank you :)
Just did this after watching this video. Thanks for the tip!
Ethan, you dropped this 👑
So simple, yet so effective
Love it. And for any that worry paper towel. Grab a rubber band equal or larger with of pliers. Same result.
Never knew that. Love learning something so simple.
Thanks. You just confirmed my intention to adjust a new door in this very manner as being the way to do it.
Wow thank you! I just bought an old house with a lot of rickety doors. Can’t wait to try this out!
This is the most useful channel for homeowners. The end.
Thank you, Axion!
very helpful, thanks for sharing
I wish I could like this 10x. Great tip.
I just built my first fire of the season to warm the house and noticed quite a draft coming from the entry door but your simple fix worked like a charm and could not have been easier. Thank you.
It's a great day when I learn something new. Thank you.
Nice job again -very well explained! Cheers.
Brilliant such an easy fix....Thankyou no sleepless nights now...awsome
Very good and simple, thank you!
I'm gonna try this. All new interior doors have this problem. Thank you.
I have used that fix before. I kind of stumbled upon it a while ago, and as demonstrated, it works great.
I always leave a bit of gap (rattle) in my doors.
The movement from summer to winter with change the thickness of the door! And also painting the door and the door stop will tighten that gap up.
People forget about that.
Such a simple fix, must be why I never thought of it. Thanks for the video.
Stellar! Thank you. We learned something new today. Hurray! Love your Channel ❤
Great tip as usual 👍🏻. So many things like this have adjustment capacity but people just don't know about it and end up wasting time and money rectifying problems that don't really exist.
Actually, the hole in that tab allows for adjustments with a narrow flathead screwdriver, so you don't have to remove it from the jam at all.
hey thanks for the tip i will sure give it a try have a great day keep the video rolling
Really useful. Thanks!!
Another great video! I’m definitely going to apply this tip. 👍🏻
What a great tip. Thank you.
So cool idea! Thanks Awesome Carpenter!
Something I never noticed! Brilliant.
Brilliant! Ty for teaching me something new.
I always learn great stuff watching your videos!
Excellent. Thank you.
THANKS ETHAN 😊😅 I’ve done both ways in the past💚💚💚
Yaayyy! I had all my doors changed last year and the main lounge door constantly rattles, especially when another door is opened or closed elsewhere in the house. I've put bits of paper and everything in there to try and pack it out. Came across your video on Facebook, didn't even know that little part existed and when I looked, fantastic, mine had the flat head screwdriver hole so I didn't need to remove the plate. First adjustment made, no more rattle. THANK YOU 😊
Very good and well needed to let people know about as a lot of people do not know this and tend to think there is a big problem. I use this feature myself. I tend to look at where the problem is and see if it can be fixed there before looking wider around the problem but only gained knowledge from personal home experience along with watching videos like yours. CZcams is a great knowledge platform only you need to be sure you can see what you are looking at and that it will work for you as some are just scams
Awesome, I have a few, strike plates, to look into.
Excellent, THANK YOU!!!
My door started rattling last week, so I was going to go up and buy a new striker plate. I looked at the old one and wondered if I could bend that tab to fix the rattle, now I know. Thank you
what a great tip!! Didn't know you could do this!
Awesome. Todays project. Thanks
Thanks for the heads up👍🏽
Good tip I did not know about. I have placed sealing strips on the jamb or moved the plate before. I will try this tip next time.
Thank you so much for this!!! My door won't rattle and keep me up at night anymore!
Always good content.
Very helpful.
Very cool man. I've been working on houses and building, fixing and so on my whole life. My dad's a 45 year master carpenter. All that to say, I didn't know about that trick/fix, and it's a very cool and useful one! Thank you for the awesome videos. And always teaching me something new. I was under the impression I knew everything! So this is really surprising! Lol not really.
Thank you!
Thanks. Good thinking!
Been doing this for years. Nice to see this trick get some attention.
Thanks! I really should have covered it before now-I’ve been intending to show it since I started the channel 😅
Amazingly simple-thank you!
You’re welcome! 😁
EXCELLENT ! Thank you.
Thank you.
Wow. Make my life better. Thank you.
Those little clear sticky bumpers you get for cabinets, small furniture felts or a soft compression weather stripping installed on a couple points on the door stop can take care of that problem too, no tools required. I wish they made an adjustable door catch with a mechanism similar to a cabinet door adjuster where a certain screw adjustment would move the striker back and forth. I often have to adjust main entrance doors almost seasonally where I live because of ridiculous humidity changes.
Thanks Ethan! I used this within 10 mins of watching the video and fixed one annoying door.
Yes! Thank you!!!
What a gem. Cheers!
Great idea, thanks!
Thanks. I will give it a shot...
Awesome tip!
Great tip
Thanks! Very helpful!
Great video, learned something new! Thanks
I’m glad I subscribed to you man. It’s the perfect example of a ‘1 minute fix the way it should be done’. I’ve put sticky stripes of foam thing and this is just _proper_.
Thanks! I have several.
