  • Our second Kay Starr comparison video. Lyrics below
Oh we ain't got a barrel of mon-ey
    Maybe we're ragged and fun-ny
    But we'll travel along
    Singing a song
    Side by side
    Don't know what's a'coming tomor-row
    Maybe it's trouble and sor-row
    But we'll travel the road
    Sharing our load
    Side by side
    Through all kinds of weather
What if the sky should fall
Just as long as we're together
It really doesn't matter at all
Now they've all had their quarrels and part-ed
We'll be the same as we start-ed
    Just traveling along
    Singing a song
    Side by side
See that sun in the morning
    Peakin' over the hill
I'll betcha' sure it always has
    Ans it always will
Well how I feel about someone
    somebody crazy for me
We're so in love with each other
And that;s the way it's gotta be
(For Kay - repeat the first four stanzas)
Composed by Harry Woods. He wrote numerous 1920s standards, including "When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along)", "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover", and "Try a Little Tenderness". Woods composed his songs on piano, despite the fact that he was born without fingers on his left hand.
Notes: The song dates to 1927 and was recorded by many, but Starr's version in 1953 was the biggest hit and the most imitated. It reached #3 on the US Billboard chart as well as the top ten in the UK. Brenda recorded it on January 26, 1959. She was only 14 and, in fact, just barely that, her birthday being about 6 weeks before the recording date. She demonstrated an ability to reel off fresh takes of classic songs for her first album entitled "Grandma, What Great Songs You Sang!" which was released August 3, 1959. This ability was used frequently in the years to come to fill up albums with older songs that Brenda liked.

"Little Miss Dynamite" is one of the most underrated, unappreciated vocal MEGA-talents in music, a child prodigy who mastered songs in EVERY genre, infusing each with an unforgettable vivacity or pathos, becoming a show business legend of incalculable greatness. God bless Brenda Lee.

I agree and that's the reason for the channel - the underrated-ness of Brenda Lee. Recently read some early reactions (1956-57) to her singing and the reviewers were quite flummoxed. Who to compare her to? How to categorize her style? They made some lame comparisons and could not really explain her style.

R.I.P. Kay Starr has died in Beverly Hills at age 94. Billie Holiday called her “the only white woman who could sing the blues”. This was rather amusing because Billie didn't know that Katherine Starks was mostly of native american blood. Her father being Iroquois and her mother mixed Irish & Native.

OMG Happy tears are rolling down my cheeks as I write this. Thank you so much Mostly Brenda. I came upon your channel while searching Bonapartes Retreat and going directly to Kay Stars version. What a great feeling to see and hear Kay Star again. I absolutely love CZcams. It provides a means of reliving my life through music and video. It could be called the Nostalgia Channel. Music has been a huge and important part of my life (I'm 83 years old) and your channel is a perfect example of what makes my life still meaningful.I love Brenda Lee (My daughter, born in 1963, is named Brenda) Thanks Again!!!

Magic Mirror, there upon my wall, I beseech thee, what maid may be the fairest of them all?
Why little Miss Brenda Mae holds that title as she travels along.

Well, I jammed as lot of them in there, figuring that that the viewer could always pause the video if they wanted. Also felt like saying more about some of the photos, but decided to keep it short and let people ask if needed.

The song has become part of the culture. It was heard in Rocky and Bullwinkle. The Jeffersons and even in a Seinfeld episode among others. Songwriter Harry Woods composed it in 1927. He was born with a malformed left hand, but still wrote and played on a piano.
