In some of the more "obscure" Legends lore, Kessel is actually a calcified fragment of Typhojem the Left-Handed God's skull. And as for the spice mineral on the planet, that is said among the darkest cults across the starts to be made of Typhojem's very own ancient blood. Another world made of the bodily remnants of this evil god is Korriban. That would explain why the Sith race became such a terribly violent people that seek dominion over all beings they deem "lesser" than their own...

5:21 the Steps might be a reference to Mauthausen Concentration camp in Austria, where among their other cruelties the Nazis forced Slave Laborers to carry granite blocks up a massive stairway, the "Stairway of Death."
7:40 the Slave inspectors are another Holocaust reference, the "Selection" made most infamous by Dr. Josef Mengele, where newly-arrived prisoners would be selected to either be sent to the work camp as a laborer or sent immediately to be executed. usually the latter were the elderly, infirm, very young children or pregnant women. horrifying stuff.
and for the manchildren among us, don't come at me with this "keep politics out of it" rubbish, the Empire took it's aesthetic straight from Nazi Germany. This isn't some "reading between the lines" stuff, Commentary from Lucas himself says he took inspiration from WWII.

The continuing existence of the spice mines before the Clone Wars should be considered *_a blight upon the Jedi order_* and a sign that they were already stagnant, ancient and hidebound, frightened of any change to the point of indolence.
*[this is going to be long]*
Liberating the Kessel slaves and stopping the spice operations should've been a priority mission for the Order, not the occasional indulgence of a Jedi and their padawan.
The Jedi were uniquely qualified to bring down the entire operation: From a secrecy perspective they had no internal leaks or moles - any other government force had the risk of compromised individuals in their ranks.
From a legal perspective they had the authority to do so under their mandate, and wouldn't need to run the operation through official channels or justify it - who would've had someone in the chain who'd have tipped off the bad guys.
And as for the corruption of the Republic,
_that should've been a beacon for them to go investigate._ If the Jedi take down the entire operation and manage to capture strategic personnel (no one resist Jedi Mind tricks for too long) and files they could blow the entire lid off a lot of corruption in the Republic - it might have helped to reform and save it.
The misery it would prevent, just to slaves and to the victims of the drug trade would be a shining light upon the Force.
And the shake up of the Republic, with a lot of corrupt individuals and criminal elements being outed would have prevented the scenerio that Palpatine was able to exploit. They would almost transform the Republic into the New Republic in its governance and integrity, as well as giving the Jedi even more leeway to enforce honest governance.
As for the operation, they had the ability to do so with surgical strikes and infiltration, far superior to any other organisation. They could actually take down the criminal elements without blowing up the slaves *(and the evidence of official corruption and collusion)* that a straight out military assault risked.
And their operatives were the most deceptively formidable in the Galaxy.
A simple method would be to arrange for a number of Jedi to be sold as ordinary slaves to each individual mine, prepositioning them to stage simultaneous uprisings from inside - a Jedi could take the control room and deactivate the defenses, and kill most of the guards with their powers. A smuggled lightsaber inside a droid (also sold into slavery) would enable them to decimate the entire mine security - those would not be elite fighting forces.
They just needed a way to disable their tags, either Force telekinesis or a hidden disguised tool of some sort.
Meanwhile the Palace is also attacked by Jedi who are pretending to be slave traders or drug buyers there to discuss further business. They are inside the secure areas and the defences, so the firepower of the defense ships and emplacements is irrelevant when you're next to the actual commanders (although some judicious planting of explosives on the defence fleet and turrets/power generators beforehand wouldn't go astray).
The Palace Jedi can either attack first without warning when everything is calm and relaxed, thereby also preventing any coordinated response to the mine attacks. Or they can wait for the confusion of the reports of the uprisings to launch their attack.
Light Jedi snubfighters in hiding can take care of any ships that actually get off the ground or come in from orbit, and maybe the ships the Jedi "slavers" came in are modified and far tougher than they appear to be, and/or they had Jedi fighters hidden inside them.
It would take a combined operation of a significant number of the Order, with a lot of scouting and planning. But it could be done, the effect would change the Galaxy, and it would invigorate the Jedi Order and give it a new resolve to fix the issues that plague the Republic and the Galaxy at large.
But Yoda would be far too conservative to undertake such a dramatic action. If the Order never fell and the Empire never rose, then the next Grandmaster may do so, or it could've been done before Yoda ever became Grandmaster, and so old and obtuse.
As for after the Empire rose, it seems like a great target for the Rebels, and while they don't have the advantages of Jedi, they could still pull it off.
Instead they launch a sneak attack using their attack fleet, which is actually well suited for that with a preponderance of hyperspace capable snubfighters and light combat troop carriers, perfect for raiding.
The X-Wings and Y-Wings take out the defenses and the U-Wings and so forth drop in ground forces to storm the mines, with the control rooms being taken out by strafing runs and torpedoes/bombs in the first run.
The Palace and the Government facilities are just plain blasted by the Rebel fleet.
Rebel ships are well suited to getting through the Kessel run, and some of their number would know of shortcuts and off the main road routes to avoid Imperial ships on station - a diversionary attack in a nearby system could draw any away, and just ion bombing a ISD near all those hazards might take it out.
For the Rebels the mission has a lot of merits, besides the feel good factor.
    It would inconvenience the Empire.
It's a good hearts and minds operation.
They could potentially free a bunch of captured Rebels who were slaves (the Spice mines being a common punishment).
They could recruit a lot of enthusiastic former slaves, without worrying that imperial spies were amongst their number.
A biggy - they could liberate a lot of Wookies, thereby turning the Empires "two birds, one stone" plan against them. A large Wookie continent would be very useful, and the message would help with recruiting other downtrodden oppressed species.
Oh and they could also combine the operation with a big heist, netting themselves a *lot* of useful Coaxium, both as a fuel for really turbocharging their ships, and as a very powerful explosive for clandestine operations.
Kessel relied to much on bribing the right people and a treacherous moat, and not enough on having a battlefleet and standing army.

Jedi Search trip to Kessel is a mixed bag, but the caves are awesome and it has one of the best quotes: "Both Han and Chewbacca had been strapped into stun-cuffs, a restraining fixture across the wrists that sent paralyzing jolts of electricity directly into the nervous system, proportional in strength to the amount of struggle a prisoner exerted. Han controlled himself well enough and received only an unpleasant tingle along his forearms. As usual, Chewbacca could not keep his temper in check and managed to stun himself into a stupor."

    • @samuelbedsole5089
      @samuelbedsole5089 Pƙed 4 lety

I never really understood that. Logistically it make sense to use a droid labor force as droids require less resources than biological workers as well as requiring less or no rest.
Best i can figure is that owning slaves is more of a status of power. While anyone can buy and own a droid, breaking a living being to your will is something else. And to have a lot of these slaves to boot only goes on to prove the point. The more slaves a person owns, the more powerful and dangerous they are, which in the Star Wars galaxy is extremely useful.
