I had a similar passport thing happen to me. For a time, I lived in a country with a questionable government, and in a city where locals called the police 'the mafia'. There were 'fines' (read bribes) for everything, especially at times leading up to major holidays.
One day, I was walking down the street doing my regular thing, breaking no laws, when a cop stopped me - I was obviously a foreigner and so presumably 'was rich'. The cop asked to see my ID, which I had to show him, so I gave him my passport. The cop told me, OK, now you must pay 'a fine' to get it back. I explained to the cop that the passport belongs to my government - it says that right on the passport, so I would let my consulate know and he could explain to my government why he was keeping the passport from me, the person my government authorized to carry it.
Yeah. The cop gave me my passport back.

A friend had a similar experience with a landlord. Moved in only to discover bedbugs! Landlord feigned ignorance and refused to take care of it. Friend talked to neighbors in his hallway and if course they were all dealing with bedbugs and had been for months. Friend organized tenants to submit complaints to License and Inspections. City quickly sent an inspector who insisted on a very expensive remediation process. Also, friend gave inspector the door code to come and go as she pleased. She inspected that 10 story building top to bottom and found tons of violations. Oh and my friend got out of the lease and moved. 😂😂

29 Palms is a USMC base right outside 29 Palms, California. The base population is probably 10x what the town population is. It's mostly used as a training and logistics base. There's a few permanent units there, since 80% of the base are live fire ranges so those units can train. It also serves a joint training base for other branches to train before deployment.

I almost had that happen to me with one person on a five-person group project taking credit for a couple of the slides that I made and presenting them as if they made them, but the project was on Google Slides which saves the history of who edited the document, and I emailed the teacher after the presentation letting them know that their only edit on the slideshow was putting their name on the slides that I made. Not sure what happened to them after, but I got a good grade and that was enough for me.
Notably, another person on the project *almost* didn't have their stuff done on time, but the day before they reached out to me and told me how lost they were and asked for help, and I was able to give them directions and clarity that helped them to finish their parts in the slideshow. It wasn't easy; I had to teach this person how to use *citations*. For a junior-level college class. I hope the help I gave that person helped them do better in their other classes and reaffirmed that it's good to ask for help.

While in high school, we had a group project in history. We had to write a paper on Ireland. My friend and I were glad we were put together and then we had to have another person. He was a looser. He said he would write it if we did all the research. We did and handed over a shoebox full of index cards in order and we also included an outline. We gave this to him 2 weeks before the paper was done. On the due date, he didn’t show up. He came back 3 days later with a 2 page paper, saying we hadn’t given him enough information and he had to do everything himself. Luckily, before handing over our info, we had showed it all to our teacher. We passed-he failed.

Yeah, the amount of money their tenant makes shouldn't matter to them, just that they get their rent (though, admittedly, it can matter when deciding to rent to someone, but that's only if they make too little to actually rent the place). My guess, the slumlord just wanted to rent the apartment to someone else for more money and so tossed OP into an apartment he couldn't rent out to anyone. Still, I don't think what they did was at all legal.

If the amount of money their tenant makes does matter to them that much, then the fact that they make good money should lead to a more expensive place, not a worse one. The logic there is completely unsound.
Just charge OP more and come up with an excuse for that. If the goal was to make more money, and OP supposedly makes a lot of money, then how is moving OP into a worse, cheaper place the solution? It genuinely makes ZERO sense.
Also, a landlord absolutely should be at least somewhat concerned with a tenant's income, given their relationship does actually depend entirely on whether the tenant can pay them.

@Richard_Nickerson Unfortunately, this was a scammer operating on scammer logic and preying on someone inexperienced. that first story reminds me of an apartment I once lived in. It was an old house split into 3 units (basement, middle floor, top floor). I lived on the top floor and my friend lived in the basement part. I had gotten evicted at one point because I had lost my job and fell behind on rent. So I moved in with my friend. The landlord lived an entirely different city. After I got booted out, I sent an email to a local building inspector mentioning mold, the dangerous stairs, and the fact that there were pigeons in the ceiling of the top unit. One day maintenance came to my friend's unit with a dehumidifier and tried to get him to sign a form saying it has always been there, he refused. Shortly after, they received a notice saying the building was condemned. After we moved out, we popped back down on the day to watch the building be imploded.

11:30 - In the Army you get promoted into leadership by earning promotion points. When I was in a few years back beofre the APFT overhaul, you got points in this way : High PT score (physical fitness), High range score (pew pew), Going to the board (rote memorization and how buddy buddy you are with the higher ups on the board), awards (in my unit, you were given awards not based on what you did but who you knew). Now the Airforce - last I heard - you have to take exams that relate to your MOS in order to prove that you have the technical expertise to go up in rank. The Army needs to add that because this "good ol boy" stuff leads to not-technically proficient people getting promoted.

    • @lancerevell5979

Back in the late 1970s in my first hitch in the Airforce promotions up to E4 Buck Seargent were automatic. Then the top brass figured they had too many young inexperienced NCO Seargents, not yet ready for leadership. They created the new Senior Airman rank, still E4 but not an NCO. Basically it just meant waiting another year before making Seargent and NCO status. Still no real training or courses.
Later in early 1980s in my second hitch - US Navy - we got our E4 NCO rank upon completing A School for our rating (job specialty). We then had to take courses to advance to E5, as well as be in the group that was allowed to advance. Sometimes there might not be enough new E5 slots for all who qualified.
Being an "OSVET" or Other Service Veteran when I joined the Navy, I'd had to drop a rank from E4 to E3 during training. So about another year delay in being able to advance again.

Apartment story: I live in a city that's considered higher class and one of the best school districts....if you have a house. But the apartments and mobile home parks are often neglected. The new Fire Marshall got the city inspectors on board to change things. Every single complex in the city got cited for inspection failures. The one I live in was the only one that responded to the press. My unit by far was not the worst. I had one major complaint and fortunately was able to get them to fix it after the 3rd property management group in under 2 years. I feel bad for them. The fallout isn't their fault. They had no real idea what they were walking into. The old company dumped everything on their desk on a Wednesday and left. I'm glad stuff is getting cleaned up, but I'm so scared for rent to go up. We can't afford it and a lot of residents cant. Our only saving grace is the last PM group after raising rent 15% and preparing to try and raise it another 25%, lost a crap ton of tenants. They're still trying to fill vacant units even after dropping the price. No one wants to pay mortgage prices for 800 sq ft, even if they can't get approved for a mortgage. They move to other newer apartment complexes. The landlords letting stuff like that go on are something else. Glad OP got her revenge and hopefully it made things better for the next tenants

Well, many times the stories we hear of "$600 hammers" doesn't take into account the time, fuel and other logistics costs involved in shipping these "cheap" items to where they need to go. At my Airforce base in my first hitch, we'd order aircraft parts and they'd be flown in that evening on a C-9 transport plane. I'd guess the costs got amortised across all items.
In my second hitch I switched to the Navy. I'd often order a part and wait weeks for it's arrival. If at sea, it became a game of the part chasing the ship around. I once ordered an electronic part for a radio. A couple weeks later I get notified it's waiting for me on the pier. It was a danged watertight door! Send it back and reorder. A couple weeks, get the notice.... got me a lower clear window for a Huey helicopter! Sadly not joking! Third try was the charm, finally got my part.
Another time, I ordered two things, a 1/2" diameter nylon washer and a simple toggle switch. The cost of that little washer was $150! The switch came attached to a big heavy bulkhead mounted metal box. Cost.... $12! And I had to paint the switch red as they sent me black, the wrong color! 😂
Navy Supply System, that's the real adventure! 😊
Once I needed a simple fuse, didn't have it in stock on board. Not wanting to wait, I went offbase and bought it, just a few cents. My Seniorchief found out I bought a part myself, and chewed me out!😮

They put the PRIVATE on trial for adultery & she was discharged for it. Nothing happened to the sargent. So they wasted money on the trial AND were incredibly misogynistic about it. The private confided in my brother that she was being mistreated by the sargent when she was rebuffing his advances, so while she wasn't forced, she didn't feel like she had much of a choice.

I can't even count how many times group projects almost ruined my grades growing up. Unfortunately my generation's teachers were taught sticking the worst students in class with the best was a great thing to do, because the peer pressure on the students who could care less about their grades would somehow make them do actual work. Of course it didn't because most of the time these students weren't stupid and in need of help, they were lazy and truly could care less if they flunked classes.
I once had a middle school project where we had to make are own board game. You were allowed to use an actual board game as a hard base for support, but had to cover up the real game board with the game your group created. My group members didn't listen to me when I explained this and insisted my Candy Land board without any alterations would be fine. Finally when we only had 1 day left to work on the project the teacher told my other group members I was right and we couldn't use Candy Land without covering the board with one we had made ourselves. So we were left with less than one class period to quickly design a board, draw it, color it, and get it taped down so it didn't ruin my board game underneath.
As a result it of course looked rushed and way worse than anyone else's in class. The entire project got C- because the board was a huge part of the grade. My mother ended up talking with the teacher about how I and one other girl in the group of 5 had not only done all the work but had advocated for a week that we needed to make our own board and weren't listened too. Thankfully the teacher had been paying attention and had heard the other group members refuse to make a board. She had also seen them practically do nothing while the other girl and I did everything. She agreed to change my grade and hers to a B- so that we would not lose the high A's we currently had in that class.
It turned out okay but should have never happened as we (the other girl and I) should never have been put in a group with 3 of the laziest (because no they weren't dumb, one girl was even very smart they just didn't want to work) students in the class simply because we had good grades. The fact that "Dick" was allowed to run free and ruin other people's grades reminds me of incidents like mine so much.
TLDR: Don't put bad students with good students for group projects it's not fair on anyone if the student is bad because they're lazy and uncaring, not because they truly need help. It's also not a student's responsibility to teach someone else with a worse grade than them if they aren't an actual tutor.

lol I know of a single incident where 2 idiots cost almost 50 million $$. An Air Force pave hawk had an emergency precautionary landing under fire in Afghanistan. 122 From the 82nd CAB sent out a DART to recover the helicopter. The 2 idiots were a QC SSG and an officer MTP. They gave the order to dump fuel. So someone has to go under the aircraft to dump fuel. Someone also told the remaining recovery crew to remove the blades from the helicopter. The blades have steel and titanium. They would have to use a saw. The fuel is called JP8. It’s a lot like diesel fuel. It reaches its flash point at higher temperatures. Lucky for them it’s a very hot Afghanistan summer day. The fuel catches. The guys under spot the fire first. They get out. The guys on top abandon the aircraft. All their gear is in or on the aircraft including weapons and ammunition. The aircraft frame is magnesium. There is nothing they can do at this point except to make sure they are not within arc of the 2 door gunner weapons. Miraculously, nobody was injured. Someone had to stay to ensure the aircraft was completely destroyed. They couldn’t leave anything recognizable. I can’t imagine being the one who has to explain that.

He wanted to make sure absolutely everything went perfectly getting this thing shipped to us, including all the paperwork. Took about a month for a huge truck (with a crane attached to it) to show up, supposedly with his new toy. He pointed out the pad that he had built to the delivery squad and went off post for a while. When he got back his brand new 80 ton anchor was sitting on its new display pad. So this shipment as far as the powers that be at the time were concerned could have been feasible. Still I gigantic F up for that StaffSgt. He should have been busted in rank for that ordeal for incompetence.

If I was the first OP, I would have never moved, but lets say I was naive enough to move. I would have trashed the apartment before i left. Take all the appliances, copper wires, rip up the floor board, take down the drywall. Insulation? Bye bye.
If he tries to sue me, he has to proof that I lived there. It would have probably cost more than 50k, because the construction guys he hired would have seen the "mould" (😂) and the other highly probable issues the place had.

29 Palms is a military base outside of the town of 29 Palms. So yes, there is a base there and yes, they were the ones who received it.
Source: I'm a veteran, and my BIL was stationed there.

The first post is pissing me off not because of OP but bc essentially the same thing happened to me and my dad when I was a teenager and the black mold was everywhere and She entered the property without notice on several occasions( on film) and had been stalking me on my walks home from school. No one would help us when we seeked legal help. No one cared that I was sleeping next to black mold. How did op get people to care 😩

29 Palms is one of the biggest Marine Corps bases in the country. It's used for a lot of training, so lots of open spaces to blow things up.

If you live in Socal, you know what/where 29 palms is. It's not that small, it's just a desert military base with a small town at the entrance. 😂

29 palms does have a Marine Corps base there, i had the distinct honor of riding shotgun in a 7 ton there wearing my flak and kevlar, and then sitting in that truck for the whole training exercise, and the drive back. Sometimes light duty is a blessing, but when all your boys are sitting in a nice airconditioned van and you're stuck in a big ass truck wearing your body armor for 2.5 hours, you wish you could be training too

Fourth story: I would have recorded the conversation and then sue the whole police station because no matter for what they are doing it, break into people's cars and take their stuff is illegal, no mattee what it is what you take or who takes it.

29 Palms is also where the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center is located. According to their site, it's "the worl'ds largest Marine Corps training base."

Story 2: Teacher needs 'proof' that Dick isn't contributing but Dick leaving OP's name off the presentation is good enough to nearly fail OP despite OP telling the teacher about the issue earlier? Not to mention that OP would have a copy of the project on their PC with an earlier date then the earliest Dick had.

29 Palms is huge and has a population of 27-30k. Everything is spread out there. This doesn't take into account the Marine Base which is practically a city unto itself. I know this because I've camped and rock climbed at the Joshua tree national park nearby.

Twenty Nine Palms is a Marine Corps Base and the base itself is NOT small, I think it’s either the biggest or second biggest (first possibly being Camp Pendleton) MCB in the world
