    In this tutorial I will show you how to model and texture a realistic looking brick wall by applying a 2D texture and involving UV Planar mapping and bump mapping.

    You ROCK Mike. I'm constantly using your tutorials to fill in the gaps of my animation instructors. You are 10 times better at explaining Maya pitfalls than any of them are. THANK YOU. Please don't stop making tuts. I'm subscribed to your channel and refer to your videos a lot.

    Hello Mike, nice video, as usual. lol
    I seem to be having a bit of a little problem texturing my walls for a living room space. I can texture everything just fine but the walls/floor/ceiling are not showing up. My small living room is inside a enlarged cube (with backface culling activated so I can see inside) I select the faces I want textured (in this case, the floor) Assign. new material>Lambert>Checkered box next to color>Folder>File.
    I pick my file and I go to Planar Mapping and select the proper settings to see if it works but I do not see my wooden floors. As I said before, I repeated the process on a separate polygon and the texture appeared just fine but refuses to appear on my walls and floor. Am I missing a step?

    for the bump map part how do we put in a normal map?

  • @smallnuts2
    @smallnuts2 Před 9 lety

    I have been getting confused with Maya's shaders and nodes. I am use to Blender so I I know what maps and nodes do but, Maya is different. I take it,if I am using a image texture all I have to do is apply a shader (blinn) for wood, cement ,normal map and a spec map? I am getting confused with 2-3d nodes. is that for procedural textures and using smart filters of Maya's substance materials?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  Před 9 lety

      Hi there,
      These nodes can be used on Maya standard materials as well as on 2D textures.
      And yes, they are used as procedural textures but also on the Maya substance materials.
      Yes, confusing, I know,
      Mike

    couldn't help but notice just using plain textures instead of normals or bump maps, is this best practice?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  Před 9 lety +1

      Adam Lambert Hi there,
      No that is not best practice. Bump maps are done but nowadays displacement more often, or sometimes neither

    • @TheDorianTube
      @TheDorianTube Před 8 lety

      +Mike Hermes I don't quite understand your reply. What I get is that bump mapping is an old tech that nowadays people don't use much and that you're doing it wrong in this video because, usually, you need specific files in order to bump properly and not plain textures?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  Před 8 lety +1

      +TheDorianTube Hi ! To start with, my reply was almost a year ago :-)
      People use Normal maps more often than Bump or Displacement maps nowadays but keep in mind that not everyone has the software to create normal maps. That's why you need to know every technique. And as for files needed for a bump map. High contrast is good. Sometimes that means black in white, somtimes just high contrast. Try to be a bit more free in how things are done. It's art remember ?

    • @TheDorianTube
      @TheDorianTube Před 8 lety

      Mike Hermes Uhm :S I asked for a clarification because my Eng sucks, wasn't a critique or anything : (. However you're right as usual uahahah, I tend to think that everyone does the same thing using the same tools etc etc. I need to grasp that in Maya you can actually choose multiple ways XD. Thank you as always for helping me/us in the comments Mike =3
