  • So it is now over one year since my first movie rant and as a result, we thought we could have a celebration of sorts.
Me and Alex run through Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the copy we have is 2:31:51 and we have a countdown in the video itself. Join us, as we re-visit the incredible achievement that is this dumpster fire and share some thoughts about the whole thing.
Let me and Alex know if this was a possible waste of time or if you have suggestions on how to improve it. Or if you would like to see different movies covered in future.

    Hello there!
I thought this would be something fun to start as a potential series of videos, depending on what people feel about it. :) /
This is the first audio commentary we have ever done so it's clunky at best. There's a bit more than just the edited audio tracks and a screen shot and It's in hopes that you guys will enjoy it a little more as supplementary content. Let me know what you think about potentially dropping this or suggestions for what films you would like a commentary for.
There are some clips thrown into the video to make sure people who can't sync with the movie, know what we are talking about. But don't worry, you are not out of sync if you see those in weird places. As we say in the beginning, the film is 2 hours, 31 minutes and 51 seconds and it wont change if you start with us.
Have a happy new year folks and thanks for 2018 o/

Those characters have been long dead. Have you seen the prequels? They still make the last Jedi look like a masterpiece. Luke was butchered in tlj but Anakin was eviscerated over three films. To the credit of Rian Johnson, the last Jedi isn’t fundamentally broken- it sucks and has plot holes galore but it doesn’t completely collapse on itself. I’d give it a d+. the prequels are not even worthy of a grade.

    • @timy9197
      @timy9197 Před 5 lety +34

James Moseley you said these characters (referring to the characters in TLJ) are long dead and then reference the prequels. Did you proofread this before posting? And the prequels didn't contradict or brake something fundamentally important about Vader 's character or his role in the story. At worst, it over exposed him. Pre Vader Anakin was never going to be interesting. Over exposing the villain isn't nearly as bad framing all hero's from the originals in a negative light. You have terrible priorities.

I was expecting Rose and Finn to be devastated that: they failed their mission to retrieve the code-breaker, they left the resistance / their friends to die, and they were surrounded and could not escape and would probably be imprisoned for years. Then Finn proceeds to gloat about how they damaged the city and Rose says it was "worth it" because they released the animals. Sort of. Luke actually beat Rey pretty easily in their *duel.*
Luke casually avoided and countered her attacks, smacked her a few times, and then easily disarmed her by grabbing the staff straight out of her hands and throwing it away. It's just that then Rey reached out for the nearby blue lightsaber. When he saw that Rey was now bringing a lightsaber to a stick fight, Luke stumbled backwards and fell.
At that point on the ground Luke had three options...1) Pull out his own green lightsaber (though it wasn't clear he had it on him or anywhere nearby); 2) Use some sort of evasive maneuver like a Force shove; or 3) Simply give up the little fight.
Given that Luke didn't approach Rey with his own lightsaber already in hand, nor pull it out when she started attacking him, it seemed pretty clear he had no interest in truly hurting or killing her. Even at the point where he was on the ground, I think he still probably could have defeated her, but it would have meant attacking her with a level of deadly force he did not want to use. He wasn't willing to harm or kill Rey, and he kinda wanted to die anyway so he didn't care about defending himself.
Rey didn't beat Luke, TLJ Luke gave up and because he had defeated himself long before Rey ever stepped foot on the island.
I mean, still an absolutely terrible decision IMO for the direction/assassination of Luke's character.....but after re-watching the duel sequence, I found that I had also misremembered how that scene played out. Luke outduled Rey easily, and then basically just gave up the moment she grabbed the lightsaber.

You are bringing up some great points a lot of people don't notice. All this happens after a span of a day.
    1) How did Finn become this famous Resistance hero.
    2) How did Rey go from seeing a person *Kylo) who killed his own father. Tried to kill her and her only friend (Finn) to then going to "save" him over one vision. Mind you, she has no idea what the force is. She is obviously confused about all this power she just got and is looking for help. Also, Rey thought of Luke as some myth and legend, yet she knows all his personal history. Even the throne room scene which was probably a very personal event between Luke and Darth Vader. Why would any of that be common knowledge to anyone. From the novel Bloodlines, all we know is that Darth Vader is still known as the ruthless murderous evil enforcer to the Emperor and nothing else.

I had an issue with the 'Godspeed, Rebels,' line, but mostly just because it just sounded like Rian Johnson not giving a shit that he's supposed to be writing a Star Wars movie.
First and foremost, we actually heard the loudspeaker in the Rebel base before the first Death Star attack punctuate the orders with 'May the Force be with you.' That seemed like their equivalent of 'Godspeed' or somesuch.
And second, this is the first of two times in rapid succession where Rian Johnson seemed to just not give any fuck about how this isn't the Rebel Alliance. It's the Resistance. I think the distinction is stupid to begin with since TFA clearly wanted Rebels vs Empire and just rebranded both of them, but it seemed like just the latest expression of Rian's ongoing contempt for even the faintest semblance of continuity, even with what was established in the last goddamn film.

yknow, listening to this I just thought of how fucking easy it would be to fix Poes arc while retaining the rough plot beats.
Just make it so that the bridge shouldn't have been able to be destroyed because it had shields, but those shields suspiciously go down, meaning a traitor sabotaged them. You could even have Leia, because of her force sensitivity or whatever. Maybe feel a disturbance or something, and try to leave before it gets blown up, and survive but be caught in the blast. Maybe you could have it be that Poe was given orders to try to stop a shot from hitting the bridge but he refuses, saying hes got a good shot at destroying the dreadnaught and didn't want to risk the opportunity.
    That would accomplish
    1. justifying why they could just shoot the bridge
    2. Leia could display force sensitivity in a way that isn't flying through fucking space.
    3. given everyone a valid reason to believe there is a traitor on board
    4. Make it so Poe did something you could criticize him on.
or you could just actually make Purple Hair the villian instead of copping out on that for muh wimmin.

i saw a great video yesterday where someone was breaking down the military aspects of the scene and mentioning something i've never heard you comment on. According to the book, the bombers flew in from hyperspace from an area in the galaxy where they're hiding just specifically for this mission. that means it was planned in advance and they were waiting fueled , loaded , and ready to destroy first order ships.
That means Leia was the one who authorized this mission in the first place and after the bombers revealed their existence to the first order and had them at a disadvantage, she change her mind and said they should escape despite that leaving them open to being attacked from behind. So if you thought she was incompetent as portrayed by johnson , you didn't even give a glimpse of how incompetent he thought she was.

    • @chronicguardian9684

32:48 The moment when Rian informed the audience in no uncertain terms that his "vision" was gonna take precedence over IRL considerations... such as Carrie Fisher being dead. They had the perfect footage. They had the means of giving her an effective on-screen death. And he showed us that... and then he said "Nah. Fuck that!" and laughed his trademark laugh. That's how it felt when I saw the movie, and everything I've heard him say since only confirmed it... and proudly.

Actually, that is something I never thought of...
Luke gets upset when Yoda kerplodes the "sacred Jedi texts!" but... what _are_ the sacred Jedi texts? We can imagine that Palpatine and Vader burned or otherwise destroyed all knowledge and records kept by the Jedi after their usurpation; and maybe Yoda and Obi-Wan ran off with whatever they could carry - which wouldn't be much, given they were fleeing for their lives. Yoda slunk off immediately after losing to Palpatine, Obi-Wan fled from Mustafar immediately after defeating Anakin - if they saved any books it would have been a handful at most. Not to mention that the Jedi were never a religion in the first place, just a bunch of people with more gooblies in their blood than others. What's so sacred about what should realistically be a dozen or so rulebooks, rolodexes and receipts?

In A New Hope they only released a few ships from the Death Star because they were tracking them. They wanted the Falcon to lead them to the base.
In Jedi they unleashed all the TIES on them before the atttack on Death Star II. They even say the Star Destroyers don’t attack because the Emperor said not to. It all made sense.

I really admire Mark Hamill for having the balls to point out his problems early on ... i know it was tempting because of the money...i dont know if he really "needed" it...and i would have loved to see what would have happened if he went a step further and said he would not play THIS version of Luke.

He didn't go back for the money, he just wanted the crew back together. Never would have happened since Ford would refuse but he did join, so did Hamill. And then he learned about the takeover afterwards. And then they never had scenes together. Yeah, Mark got pretty royally screwed over.

We've had plenty of Jedi go full darkside after Order 66 and through the dark times or straight up give up and pretend they're not a force user in the comic books and novels. But Luke was the one who brought the Jedi Order back to it's former glory....well...the old canon at least.

MauLer, I came to realization on why the bombers were so bad. If they're being sold weapons from an outside source, then the worse they are, the more the Resistance (Rebels) will have to buy. Genius!
